• iMac boot from linux partition on external drive

  I have the following "setup:" iMac (no internal drive/dead) --------- (Firewire) ------- [[MAC OS X]] | | | | (USB) | | | | [[MISC STORAGE PARTITION] [MISC STORAGE PARTITION] [EXT2 UBUNTU PARTITION]] I routinely use the firewire drive to boot MAC OS X. However, I would like to boot from the linux partition of the USB drive. This linux partition had linux installed on it from a live cd, and during that process, I told the installer to install GRUB on the usb drive (which happened to be /dev/sdd). My question is, how do I get this disk to show up during the iMac option-boot? Currently, only the firewire MAC OS X option shows up. I have read about rEFIT, but that appears to install it to the Mac OS X disk (would that still work?)... Also mentioned was installing rEFIT to the internal EFI system partition, but I don't know if that is wise.

• Entity system in Lua, communication with C++ and level editor. Need advice.

  Hi!, I know this is a really difficult subject. I have been reading a lot this days about Entity systems, etc... And now I'm ready to ask some questions (if you don't mind answering them) because I'm really messed. First of all, I have a 2D basic editor written in Qt, and I'm in the process of adding entitiy edition. I want the editor to be able to receive RTTI information from entities to change properties, create some logic being able to link published events to published actions (Ex:A level activate event throws a door open action), etc... Because all of this I guess my entity system should be written in scripting, in my case Lua. In the other hand I want to use a component based design for my entities, and here starts my questions: 1) Should I define my componentes en C++? If I do this en C++ won't I loose all the RTTI information I want for my editor?. In the other hand, I use box2d for physics, if I define all my components in script won't it be a lot of work to expose third party libs to lua? 2) Where should I place the messa system for my game engine? Lua? C++?. I'm tempted to just have C++ object to behave as servers, offering services to lua business logic. Things like physics system, rendering system, input system, World class, etc... And for all the other things, lua. Creation/Composition of entities based on components, game logic, etc... Could anyone give any insight on how to accomplish this? And what aproach is better?. • Accessing Secure Web Services from ADF Mobile

  Most of the enterprise Web services you'll access are going to be secured - meaning they'll require you to pass a user/password in order to get to their data.  If you never created a secured Web service, it's simple in JDeveloper! For the below video I just right clicked on a Java class that I exposed as a Web service, and chose  "Web Service Properties" and then checked the "oracle/wss_username_token_service_policy" box from the list of options (that's the option supported by ADF Mobile right now): In the demo below we are going to use a "remote" login server that does the authentication of the user/pass.The easiest way to "create" a remote login server is to create a "regular" web ADF application, secure it, and deploy it on a server. The secured ADF application can just require ADF Authentication with a simple HTTP Basic Authentication - basically the next two images in the Application->Secure->Configure ADF Security menu wizard. ok - so now you have a secured ADF application - deploy it on a server and get the URL for that application.  From this point on you'll see the process in the video which deals with the configuration of your ADF Mobile app. First you'll need to enable security for your ADF mobile application, so it will prompt users to provide a user/pass combination. You'll also need to configure security on specific features. And you can have them use remote login pointing to your regular secured ADF application. Next define your Web service data control. Right click on the web service data control to "define Web Service Security". You'll also need to define the adfCredentialStoreKey property for the Web Service data control in the connections.xml file. This should be it. • tunneling x11vnc through ssh on a non standard port to ubuntu computer tightvnc

  I have been stuck with setting up my virtual desktop on my ubuntu laptop. I am running ubuntu to ubuntu with x11vnc I start the process on my laptop as follows: " ssh -L5904:localhost:5900 -p Port remoteuser@remoteip." That command works, then I start x11vnc server, "x11vnc -noncache -once -shared -rfbauth ~/.vnc/passwd." This command works and starts connection. Then I open another window on my laptop and type, export VNC_VIA_CMD='/usr/bin/ssh -2 -c aes128-cbc -x -p Port -l User -f -: %L:%H:%R %G sleep 20' (not sure if works). then I type, vncviewer -endcodings Tight -depth 8 -quality 1 -via IPofremotemachine -u remoteuser localhost:01. The first time it work but from now on it just gives me the vncviewer -help screen everytime. I type in the password for my remote machine and then shows -help screen for vncviewer. • People != Resources

  Ken Tabor’s blog post “They Are not Resources – We Are People” struck a chord with me.  I distinctly remember hearing the term “resources” within the context of “people” for the first time back in the late 90’s.  I was in a meeting at Compaq and a manager had been faced with some new scope for an IT project he was managing.  His response was that he needed more “resources” in order to get the job done.  As I knew the timeline for the project was fixed and the process for acquiring additional funding would almost certainly extend beyond his expected delivery date, I wondered what he meant.  After the meeting, I asked him what he meant… his response was that he needed some more “bodies” to get the job done.  For a minute, my mind whirred… why is it so difficult to simply say “people?”  This particular manager was neither a bad person nor a bad manager… quite the contrary.  I respected him quite a bit and still do.  Over time, I began to notice that he was what could be termed an “early adopter” of many “Business speak” terms – such as “sooner rather than later,” “thrown a curve,” “boil the ocean” etcetera.  Over time, I’ve discovered that much of this lexicon can actually be useful, though cliché and overused.  For example, “Boil the ocean” does serve a useful purpose in distilling a lot of verbiage and meaning into three simple words that paint a clear mental picture.  The term “resources” would serve a similar purpose if it were applied to the concept of time, funding, or people.  The problem is that this never happened.  “Resources”, “bodies”, “ICs” (individual contributors)… this is what “people” have become in the IT business world.  Why?  We’re talking about simple word choices here.  Why have human beings been deliberately dehumanized and abstracted in this manner? What useful purpose does it serve other than to demean and denigrate?

• Why does my fan run so hard on my Dell XPS 15z?

  I recently bought a Dell XPS 15z. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium, but I really wanted to try out Ubuntu on it. I ran the Windows installer and was surprised how smooth the process was. Within 10 minutes, I had a dual boot setup with Ubuntu 11.10. It boots into Ubuntu just fine and everything seems to work. I've read a lot about problems with touchpad and wireless, but honestly, I've had none of those issues. The only thing that's really bothering me is the fan constantly runs fast. Under Windows, it rarely ever came on and when it did, it wasnt spinning that fast. What could be going on under Ubuntu that would cause this? I want to get that under control because I want to use Ubuntu as my primary OS and screw Windows. Any help would be much appreciated! Note: I've read that others have set acpi=false, but I have not made any changes to the default installation. Should I make that change?

• Unable to debug an encodded javascript?

  I’m having some problems debugging an encoded javacscript. This script I’m referring to given in this link over here. The encoding here is simple and it works by shifting the unicodes values to whatever Codekey was use during encoding. The code that does the decoding is given here in plain English below:- <script language="javascript"> function dF(s){ var s1=unescape(s.substr(0,s.length-1)); var t=''; for(i=0;i<s1.length;i++)t+=String.fromCharCode(s1.charCodeAt(i)-s.substr(s.length-1,1)); document.write(unescape(t)); } </script> I’m interested in knowing or understanding the values (e.g s1,t). Like for example when the value of i=0 what values would the following attributes / method would hold s1.charCodeAt(i) and s.substr(s.length-1,1) The reason I’m doing this is to understand as to how a CodeKey function really works. I don’t see anything in the code above which tells it to decode on the basis of codekey value. The only thing I can point in the encoding text is the last character which is set to 1 , 2 ,3 or 4 depending upon the codekey selected during encoding process. One can verify using the link I have given above. However, to debug, I’m using firebug addon with the script running as localhost on my wamp server. I’m able to put a breakpoint on the js using firebug but I’m unable to retrieve any of the user defined parameters or functions I mentioned above. I want to know under this context what would be best way to debug this encoded js.

• Oracle Logical Standby redo generation

  Oracle 10.2.0.4 database with a logical standby on Win2K3. Recently a rather large delete operation was carried out on the production instance. I'm experiencing difficulty with the logical standby, in that it gets a couple of hundred (58M size) archive logs into the operation and the apply process fails with an out-of-memory error. Unfortunately, every time it fails it has to restart the apply from the beginning of the transaction. This is taking a couple of days each time. Anyway, in trying to resolve this problem, I've noticed that each archive log from the production system generates 5 or 6 log switches on the standby. I don't understand why this should be. Anyone have any ideas? A related question that I've not found the answer for: does anyone know if the logical standby must be running in archivelog mode? I really don't have a need to keep the logs.

• Problem identifying which page/page/function locks whole IIS server

  Hello, I have problem identifying which page/page/function locks whole IIS server. Out of the blue whole w3wp.exe jumps to CPU 90-98% usage. I have created 3 different application pools to see which w3wp.exe service locks the processor but I am unable to find out this information. I can only see that 2 of 3 services have 0-5% usage and one is jumping around 90-98% after some while. I think some process/function/redirect/sql is doing this but I would like to eliminate it. So far I am not even able to find the source of the problem. On my local development machine with VS2010 everything works like charm and I am unable to replicate problem. The server is windows 2k3 web server, sql server 2k5 and .net 4.0 Thank you for your help, links or any information on this issue. Fero

• Can't reinstall Office 2010

  I had Office 2010 Professional Plus installed on my Windows 7 (32 bit machine), then I decided to remove it and install the 2013 version. I went to Programs and Features and removed the software as always, everything went successfully and it asked me to reboot the machine in order to complete the un-installation process, and when I clicked reboot a message suddenly appears telling me that an error occurred during un-installation and the system restarts instantly before I get a chance to see the error message. After that I tried to re-install Office 2010 but after the installer seems to have finished, it tells me that the installation failed without an explanations ? I have taken a look at the event viewer and there is some error saying the office protection platform service failed to start, could this have anything to do with the problem? What could be the cause, how can I fix this ?

• Is there an OpenID demo server out there?

  Hi everyone. I'm doing some experiements with adding OpenID to something I'm working on, and I'd like to test out a few providers. Is there a server out there that will go through the OpenID login process (same way that the StackOverflow group does) and tell me all the information the provider shows. I imagine it would work like... I go to example.com and type in https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id example.com bounces me to google. I log in. Google asks me to confirm if I allow example.com access to everything. Google bounces me back to example.com example.com tells me my OpenID, email address, anything else it's got. Does such a thing please already exist?

• Why does subshell not inherit exported variable (PS1)?

  After some debugging I finally narrowed down the problem as to why my X session xterm prompt does not appear according to my PS1 setting. If I run sh -c env, it doesn't even show PS1 in the list. Why? export PS1='test' sh -c env # No PS1 in the list, default prompt appearance (shell name + version) Substituting sh with bash yields same result, alas the behavior appears to be the same for both shells/modes. As far as I understood from man bash, the environment resulting from command run by shell with -c should include the exported variables. And it does - exporting FOOBAR results in FOOBAR listed in env run by subshell. It appears that the story is different if the variable is PS1 however. What is going on? I want my prompt propagated throughout the process tree and system. For matters sake, it is set in /etc/profile.d/user.sh (a file I created myself) with the following: PS1='\u@\H \w \$ ' export PS1 I am running Arch Linux (updated yesterday.)

• HTML5 Canvas Converting between cartesian and isometric coordinates

  I'm having issues wrapping my head around the Cartesian to Isometric coordinate conversion in HTML5 canvas. As I understand it, the process is two fold: (1) Scale down the y-axis by 0.5, i.e. ctx.scale(1,0.5); or ctx.setTransform(1,0,0,0.5,0,0); This supposedly produces the following matrix: [x; y] x [1, 0; 0, 0.5] (2) Rotate the context by 45 degrees, i.e. ctx.rotate(Math.PI/4); This should produce the following matrix: [x; y] x [cos(45), -sin(45); sin(45), cos(45)] This (somehow) results in the final matrix of ctx.setTransform(2,-1,1,0.5,0,0); which I cannot seem to understand... How is this matrix derived? I cannot seem to produce this matrix by multiplying the scaling and rotation matrices produced earlier... Also, if I write out the equation for the final transformation matrix, I get: newX = 2x + y newY = -x + y/2 But this doesn't seem to be correct. For example, the following code draws an isometric tile at cartesian coordinates (500, 100). ctx.setTransform(2,-1,1,0.5,0,0); ctx.fillRect(500, 100, width*2, height); When I check the result on the screen, the actual coordinates are (285, 215) which do not satisfy the equations I produced earlier... So what is going on here? I would be very grateful if you could: (1) Help me understand how the final isometric transformation matrix is derived; (2) Help me produce the correct equation for finding the on-screen coordinates of an isometric projection. • Black login screen Ubuntu 12.04 if WGA cable pluged in on reboot

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.1, 64 bits, installed on a Z77 Pro4 (ASrock motherboard), crucial M4 SSD drive (sata 3), and intel i5 3570k (ivy bridge). I have this annoying problem : When I startup the computer, I get a CLI login prompt : At this moment, if I press enter, i get the usual CLI login prompt. If not, here is what I get : From now, if I login using CLI, i identify the lightdm processus, kill and start it : #ps -A | grep lightdm #sudo kill -9 1273 #sudo lightdm and miracle, these commands bring back the gui login screen. BUT It's very annoying as I have to repeat these steps at every boot, and the people using this desktop are not familiar with linux at all! So I tried to figure out the cause and here is what I found : If, when I shutdown the computer, the WGA cable is not pluged in, then Ubuntu will boot on GUI login screen without a glitch! But If the WGA cable is pluged in when shuting down, I will get CLI login prompt... Note 1: I installed linux kernel 3.4, but it hasn't solve the problem. Note 2: Is it linked to the new HD 4000 integrated graphic processor ? Note 3: If i boot on an USB stick (Ubuntu 12.04), NO problems ! Note 4: If booting on the SSD, when clicking "shutdown" button, the shutdown process never ends up (logout screen keep displaying and fans are still rolling). But if booting on USB stick, the shutdown action runs properly.

  Over the years, I've had many times when some file gets removed and there's no obvious culprit.  With dtrace, it is somewhat easy to figure out:  #! /usr/sbin/dtrace -wqs syscall::unlinkat:entry /cleanpath(copyinstr(arg1)) == "/dev/null"/ {         stop();         printf("%s[%d] stopped before removing /dev/null\n", execname, pid);         system("ptree %d; pstack %d", pid, pid); } That script will stop the process trying to remove /dev/null before it does it.  You can allow it to continue by restarting (unstopping?) the command with prun(1) or killing it with kill -9.  If you want the command to continue automatically after getting the ptree and pstack output, you can add "; prun %d" and another pid argument to the system() call.

• One vs. many domain user accounts in a server farm

  We are in a migration process of a group of related computers (Intranet servers, SQL, application servers of one application) to a new domain. In the past we used one domain user account for every computer (web1, web2, appserver1, appserver2, sql1, sqlbackup ...) to access central Windows resources like network shares. Every computer also has a local user account with the same name. I am not sure if this is necessary, or if it would be easier to configure and maintain to use one domain user account. Are there key advantages / disadvantages of having one single user account vs. dedicated accounts per computer for this group of background servers? If I am not wrong, one advantage besides easier administration of the user account could be that moving installed applications and services around between the computers does not require a check of the access rights anymore. (Except where IP addresses or ports are used)

• Sharing Windows Folders on a Network... other PCs see but can't access

  I'm soooo tired of network setup issues. All I want to do is share a folder and all it's sub-folders so other PCs on my network can view and change this remote location. Why is it that setting a dir to "shared" doesn't actually make it usable in any way? The other PC can see the fodler but is unable to actually open it and look inside. It seems every time I want to do this I go through some semi-random process of right clicking the folder and enabling sharing, then looking in the folder properties to add permissions and other sharing... and then I end up with some folders working but others will randomly block permission on certain files or sub-dirs. I have 5 PCs in my local testing network and I cannot believe it should be this complicated... where is the simple "make this folder work on the network" option?! I have a mixture of XP, Vista & W7 machines, but this seems common to all of them.

• Is it possible to upgrade using the Windows Server 2012 evaluation?

  I've got a Windows Server 2008 Standard installation here that I'm trying to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Server, using the evaluation version. (The scenario is essentially that I need to test the upgrade, and specifically the upgrade process, before we spend the money on going ahead with the actual upgrade.) When I try to upgrade, it fails with the message: "Windows Server 2008 Standard cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI). You can choose to install a new... (etc., etc.)" Is this (non-upgradability) a known limitation of the evaluation version? (Unfortunately, I haven't found a clear answer on this point.) And if not, any thoughts on where else I might look for the problem and solutions to it?

• Stuck GhostScript processes, how to debug?

  Having a problem with Ghostscript processes that don't end. This does not happen often, probably once every 3 weeks we see this issue with 1-3 processes. Running CentOS 6.4 on a VPS from Rackspace. We use PrinceXML to generate PDFs which uses GhostScript to handle fonts. I'm a developer not a server admin so I have a basic knowledge of *nix but no clue on how to fix this. Installed strace and ran it on each process with the following command: strace -p 20619 -s 80 -o gs.txt Left it for 5m, gs.txt is empty? Thanks in advance!

• Life Is Full Of Changes (Part 1)

  Today will be my last day with Sogeti.  I’ve been with Sogeti USA for just over 4 years.  In that time I’ve gotten to work on some great projects, develop relationships with some brilliant and passionate people, participate in the .Net developer and SharePoint communities, and grow my skills in a number of areas I’m passionate about.     As with all good things they must come to an end though.  I’ve accepted a position with another company and will provide more details once the transition has completed.  This decision was a difficult one to make but it provides a great career opportunity on many levels.  As much as my new schedule allows I plan to continue participating in local user groups, speaking at conferences, and blogging.     Speaking of which, you may have noticed my reduced blogging activity in the past few months.  In addition to a career change I’m also in the process of moving to a new residence (only a few miles from my current residence, so I’ll still be in Columbus.)  Searching for a new place, filling out paperwork, and all of the other work associated with this move has taken away a good chunk of the time I used to devote to blogging.  Once everything gets settled out with the move and job change I’ll re-evaluate how much time I can devote to blogging.     A big thanks to Sogeti and everyone who has been so supportive over my time with them.  It’s hard to move on, but I am excited for the prospects that the future will bring.         -Frog Out

• Chrome Crash Investigation

  Chrome is crashing very very frequently(every 2-3 min). It becomes irresponsive. How can I start investigate why this is crashing so much? It feels to me that certain components of some web pages are triggering the crash. I also checked "C:\Users\irfan\AppData\Local\Google\CrashReports", but this folder is empty. Some sort of process tacking tool, and keep an eye out for which request is being made just before the crash, or something like that. Any software suggestion? Im using Windows 7. Please don't suggest, reinstall chrome. I want to know why this is happening.

• Couldn't start mysql service in linux

  Iam trying to install one version of mysql in a LINUX machine. The system contain already another version of mysql installation. I prefer manual installation. Copy the exctracted tarball into a location and create symbolic link to that. I wish to install my mysql version without affecting already installed mysql version in the system. I created mysqld as service. But It couldn't start. When Iam trying to start this mysqld process, it shows an error like: Starting MySQL............................................................ ......................................... ERROR! The server quit without updating PID file (/var/lib/mysql/Test.pid). Please help me, is any wrong with my installation??? • How can I use encryption with Gmail?

  I'm currently reading Cory Doctorow's novel Little Brother which includes a part about encrypted messaging, and even wrapping messages first in my private key and then your public key. I'd like to play around with that but from what I've googled so far it seems to be a rather convoluted process, requiring installing several program components, and creating an encrypted message requires doing some manual file manipulation. I'm surprised that I can't find something like a Firefox plugin that integrates encryption into Gmail. I've seen that there is a Thunderbird PGP plugin, but I don't use T-bird. I also saw a blog post that Google apparently toyed with PGP support in 2009, but nothing has appeared in the meantime. Question: To use encryption with Gmail, is there a simpler method than creating a file locally, then encrypting that file, and finally attaching it to a regular Gmail message?

• ESX - Initialization for vmfs2 failed with -1

  I recently purchases a bunch of R710's from Dell. I installed VMWare ESX on them. The installation process finishes without a problem; however once ESX boots the following error displays at the botton with red letters: 00:00:02:21.493 cpu11:4119) mod:2971: Initialization for vmfs2 failed with -1 I installed on two different servers and the same error appears. The curious thing is that if I install ESXi 3.5 or 4 there is not problem. What does this problem mean, and how can I resolve it?
