• Logout trouble with alternative shells (Win7 Home Premium x64)

  I've tried bb4win and Litestep, and every time I need to log out for some reason (shutdown and all included), the system hangs and the spinning icon next to the "Logging out" text stops spinning. Changing the shell in registry for both local machine and current user causes this behavior. Any ideas on what might cause this? Alternatvely, what steps can I take to figure out what is going wrong? In Linux, you are able to open things in a framebuffer and examine the output, but with Windows it is not so clear to me how to see what is happening under the hood, especially with this Home Premuim version. Update: Since logging out normally to switch the shell back to Explorer doesn't work normally, I have to end Litestep first. However, when I do so, an Explorer navigation window pops up (not the taskbar). This also occurs with bb4win.

• SQL Server Management Studio Connect to Server List Editing

  I'm using SQLServer Management Studio (2005) and I have a fairly lengthy list of servers in there, and I'd like to get rid of some of them that are no longer in use, without having to set them all up again. I know that the C:\Users\*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell\mru.dat can be deleted and this will remove ALL the entries, but is there anyway to just delete some of them? (Coding info) I looked at the file and it is a serialised blob from the Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionDlg.dll (Class Personalization) in the Appplication directory, but all the methods are private. So I can't just create an instance of this and then call Remove on the entries. • Is Dell's server software bundle necessary? (Poweredge 2950 in my case)

  Hi all, Dell includes a fair amount of software with its servers, but I'm having a hard time determining from the documentation what each of them does, and whether or not I should install it. Dell's support site (unless I'm doing it wrong) seems fairly opaque to me and its offerings fairly unstandardized in terms of their usage, so if possible I'd like to stray away from them. Specifically, I'm curious if any of the features offered are duplicated in something like Microsoft System Center. For additional background information, I'm working with a Poweredge 2950 that was just rebuilt with an expanded raid-6, but initially I just installed Server 2008 R2 directly instead of using the Build and Update utility. There's nothing of use on it at the moment so I'm totally open to wiping it again.

• What's a good entity hierarchy for a 2D game?

  I'm in the process of building a new 2D game out of some code I wrote a while ago. The object hierarchy for entities is like this: Scene (e.g. MainMenu): Contains multiple entities and delegates update()/draw() to each Entity: Base class for all things in a scene (e.g. MenuItem or Alien) Sprite: Base class for all entities that just draw a texture, i.e. don't have their own drawing logic Does it make sense to split up entities and sprites up like that? I think in a 2D game, the terms entity and sprite are somewhat synonymous, right? But I do believe that I need some base class for entities that just draw a texture, as opposed to drawing themselves, to avoid duplication. Most entities are like that. One weird case is my Text class: It derives from Sprite, which accepts either the path of an image or an already loaded texture in its constructor. Text loads a texture in its constructor and passes that to Sprite. Can you outline a design that makes more sense? Or point me to a good object-oriented reference code base for a 2D game? I could only find 3D engine code bases of decent code quality, e.g. Doom 3 and HPL1Engine.

• Ubuntu doesn't boot due to GRUB-Problems

  Users out there, I came here with the spark of a hope, that you could help me. I want to get rid of my old WinXP, because the Game-Support for it seems to slowly expire now... So I took a second drive, just an old empty one I had at hands (ATA-Maxtor 90648D3), plugged of the other drive with WinXP, so that it couldn't be harmed, and started the installationof Ubuntu 12.04. Everything went as it was supposed to, until the end. Normal shutdown after successful installation process. But when I tried to boot my new Ubuntu from the HDD, it said: error: out of disk. grub rescue> So, what to do now? I already tried a lot of things in the terminal, e.g. the update-grub as mentioned on http://opensource-sidh.blogspot.de/2011/06/recover-grub-live-ubuntu-cd-pendrive.html. Everything worked, he didn't complain about a missing data or anything, but at the end of the day he still wasn't able to boot! Next step was to change the etc/default/grub-file, so that it could load the ATA-drivers first, so that there is now problem with my drive. But even this didn't seem to have any effect, I'm still stuck with Ubuntu in the Live-CD-Mode... If there was anybody to help me out there, I would be very glad. Thanks for any support, Dave P.S.: I even tried to fix it with boot-repair, a small tool for Ubuntu, and it created a file with data that could probably help you to help me. • Squid/Kerberos authentication with only Linux

  Hi, I would like to know if it possible to let a Windows Xp machine authenticate to Squid (Linux) using Kerberos without the need of an Active Directory domain. I only want to create a Kerberos ticket on the client side, which should give the client access to squid (using I.E.). I only found tutorials about configuring A.D./Squid, not an environment with only Linux servers. Thanks Update: The kerberos setup is correctly done, the proxy and client can get tickets. As for the browser (FF/IE), I get: ERROR Cache Access Denied While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.google.com/ The following error was encountered: * Cache Access Denied. In kerberos, I get: squid_kerb_auth: Got 'YR ElRNTVMTUABBAABAB4IIogAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAFASgDAAAADw==' from squid (length: 59). squid_kerb_auth: parseNegTokenInit failed with rc=101 squid_kerb_auth: received type 1 NTLM token This message is strange, as I didn't configure NTLM. It looks like the browser uses the wrong authentication methode.

• FTP transfer timeouts while uploading small files

  I have this problem that when I need to transfer some files (mostly small files < 100KB) the connections time out. Well actually it uploads one file and it fails on the next until my client reconnects to the server and the same thing happens over and over again. I googled the problem and some said that switching from passive mode to active mode could solve the it but it didn't work for me. Even continuously pinging the server to keep the connection alive was to no avail. P.S. I have root access to the server. Update: I'm running ProFTPD on a CentOS vps. I tried a few clients (FireFTP, FileZilla) all having the same problem.

• Having trouble with projection matrix, need help

  I'm having trouble with what appears to be the projection matrix. Given a wide enough of a screen, when a cube is on the left and right most edge, the left or right wall will appear stretched to the point that the front face is 1/10 the width of the side. So I do update the screen ratio along with the projection matrix and view port on screen resize, am I safe to assume all the trouble is from the matrix class? Also the cube follows the mouse, but it's only vertically aligned and ahead of the mouse when going left or right from the center of the screen. • How reduce size of PPT 2010 Notes Pages PDFs?

  I have a PPT presentation of about 400 slides that I periodically update and publish as PDF. The view I publish is the Notes Pages. This worked fine for several years, during which time I was using PPT 2002. I recently upgraded to PPT 2010, and now I find that the PDFs I create are about 25 times bigger than they used to be, and the text in the slides part of the Notes Pages is no longer selectable in Acrobat. According to Why does Powerpoint 2010 print notes pages to PDF as raster images? , the problem is that PPT 2010 is rendering the slides' content as images, which is not what earlier versions of PPT did. The solution offered in that discussion involves Office Automation and VBA, neither of which I know anything about, and it's not clear whether that approach solves the problem of the text in the slides not being selectable in the PDF. Isn't there a simple way to get PPT 2010 to print Notes Pages to PDF the way it did in PPT 2002?

  How can I reset local CRL (in OS local cash) in Windows OS (XP, Windows 7) manual? We need to reset local CRL because otherwise the OS will use local CRL until "next update" period. As described in "Manually publish the CRL": Clients that have a cached copy of the previously-published CRL or delta CRL will continue using it until its validity period has expired, even though a new CRL has been published. Manually publishing a CRL does not affect cached copies of CRLs that are still valid; it only makes a new CRL available for systems that do not have a valid CRL.

• SVN: Error validating server certificate for svn hook linux

  Hi, I managed to setup a SVN (over SSL) server and TortoiseSVN client on Win. I made a Post-Commit Hook for test project. The Post-Commit will update the web dir so the App in PHP can be executed with the newest version. It all works when done over shell. The only problem is, when i commit the changes over the client in Win the change is commited but HOOK throws error post-commit hook failed (exit code 1) with output: Error validating server certificate for 'https://SERVER_IP:443': - The certificate is not issued by a trusted authority. Use the fingerprint to validate the certificate manually! - The certificate hostname does not match.   For example, cell A1 contains the text "Hello World" which is in bold. In cell A2, I use the formula =A1. Therefore cell A2 now also contains "Hello World", but it is not in bold. How can I modify the formula to also copy the formatting (in this case, bold) of A1? A more complex example is strikethrough properties, i.e. A1 contains "Orange/Red". How do I show the same content in cell A2 dynamically, so that any changes made in A1 will update A2 as well?

However, when I do www.domain2.com it shows the page for domain1.com! How to properly configure nginx? Does this have something to do whether www is a CNAME or an A record? • Cannot get Backup Exec to backup Exchange.

  I have a media server, Windows Server 2008 SP2 running Backup Exec 2010 R2. The SQL and other Windows agents work but I cannot backup the Exchange 2010 server running Windows Server2008 R2. I have the correct license for the Exchange agent - installed on the media server, and I installed Exchange Management tools on the media server. The 'Microsoft Exchange Database Availability Group' option is greyed out and if I select the server under a new backup job I can expand the 'Microsoft Information Store' option and see the mail database name but showing 0Kb. When I try to back it up it gives an error displaying: The job failed with the following error: Backup Exec attempted to back up an Exchange database according to the job settings. The database was not found, however. Update the selection list and run the job again.

• Laptop HDMI out to monitor DVI in

  I have a laptop that i'm trying to fix, and it has HDMI out. I have a cable i bought for my HTPC which does DVI out to HDMI in, which worked fine. Was hoping to be able to use this same cable for HDMI out to DVI in, is it possible? UPDATE: Point of clarification, The laptop's display doesn't work (it was dropped) and I'm trying to figure out what's working and what isn't. in addition to HDMI out, it has VGA out, but that seems to have a short in it, and doesn't display properly (sometimes it works, sometimes, it shows stuff in 256 colors in 800x640). I can tell the LCD screen works (comes on) so i think it's whatever is carrying the data to it that doesn't work. I know more often than know, the display is what breaks... The cable i'm using is a standard HDMI to DVI cable, there are no audio connections or anything. Thanks!

  This Linux Swap Space Mini-HOWTO describes how to share swap space between Windows and Linux. Do these instructions still apply to Ubuntu in 2011? How should I modify the steps for Ubuntu? Is there a better approach to sharing swap space? Based on the HOWTO, it seems best to create a dedicated NTFS swap partition: Dedicated so the swap file will be contiguous and remain unfragmented. NTFS so both Windows and Ubuntu can read/write to it. (Or is FAT32 better for this purpose?) Then, configure Ubuntu to prepare the swap space for use by Linux on start up; by Windows on shut down. I want to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7 on my X301 laptop. However, my laptop only has a 64 GB SDD, so I would like to conserve as much disk space as possible. update: There is an alternate method using a special driver for Windows that let you use a Linux swap partition for temporary storage like a RAM-disk, but it doesn't seem to be as good...

• Workaround for an Xcode/iOS SDK Issue...

  Hi, everyone: When you are doing ADF Mobile development, and you need to deploy the application to an iOS device, you would need to compile/deploy the app with iOS App Certificates and Provisioning Profile. This means you would need to "Deploy to Package" or "Deploy to iTunes" during deployment, and configure JDeveloper with the proper certificates/profiles. In some instances (exact combination is still not clear), deploy and signing the application to generate the ipa file may fail with similar error message at the end of the deployment log: [01:04:45 PM] Deployment failed due to one or more errors returned by '/usr/bin/xcrun'. The workaround is discussed in this article from StackOverflow. This article refers to the old location of Xcode, so you would need to adjust the paths accordingly. The path for Xcode 4.3 and above would be like: /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents//Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/PackageApplication to this script file.   The latest update of Windows Live Messenger is an msp added to the package. I want to patch a msp into an msi. Reference download http://wl.dlservice.microsoft.com/download/8/3/D/83D75746-DF04-45E9-8374-BD31B9419128/en/wlsetup-all.exe I extract all msi and msps from this. (To get the msp and msi's I did the following Use resource hacker to open up wlsetup-all.exe In the left hand tree browse to PACKAGE Right click PACKAGE, save PACKAGE resources Save to a new temp folder Eg. D:\temp\package.rc This will output a whole lot of .bin files These are just cab files so we need to do a mass rename “ren *.bin *.cab” Once done select all cab files and extract to a new sub folder \extracted In \extracted you will see all the msi, msp and 7z files you need) I try to apply the msp directly with no result msiexec /p messenger.msp /a messenger.msi I also try doing a admin install with nothing being extracted.

  I have a hybrid disk. After trying to copy some files from another disk to this one, I lost my OSX and Ubuntu boot capability. How do I get the MBR repaired to match the GPT table (up to the 4 part limit of course)? The question is simply - Do I blindly say Yes to gptsync's suggestion? It looks sort of ok but not exactly so...Advice please on interpreting the above output to get my disk usable would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
