  • Ruby/RoR: calling original method via super()?

    - by fearless_fool
In a RoR app, I want to specialize ActiveRecord's update_attributes() method in one of my models, extracting some of the attributes for special handling and passing the rest of them to the original update_attributes() method. The details: class Premise < ActiveRecord::Base ... def update_attributes(attrs) attrs.each_pair do |key, val| unless has_attribute?(key) do_special_processing(key, val) attrs.delete(key) end end # use original update_attributes() to process non-special pairs super.update_attributes(attrs) end ... end The call to super.update_attributes(attr) raises an error: undefined method `update_attributes' for true:TrueClass ... which makes me suspect I really don't understand the super keyword in Ruby. What am I missing? Specifically, how do I call the original update_attributes() method?

  • After update hook not being called for DataMapper model with dm 1.0.2

    - by Macario
Hi, I've the following model and I want to execute a method on save and update, problem is that the hook is not being executed on update. class User include DataMapper::Resource include BCrypt property :id, Serial property :email, String, :index => true property :crypted_password, String, :accessor => :private ... attr_accessor :password, :password_confirmation before :save, :encrypt_password! # also tried the following with no success: # before :update, :encrypt_password! # and tried this but hell was never raised # before :update do # raise 'hell' # end def encrypt_password! self.crypted_password = Password.create password end end This spec fails: it 'should call encrypt_password! on update' do subject.save.should be_true subject.should_receive(:encrypt_password!) subject.update(:password => 'other-password', :password_confirmation => 'other-password').should be_true end And this passes: it 'should call encrypt_password! on create' do subject.should_receive(:encrypt_password!) subject.save.should be_true end I've also tried with after :update in addition to after :save with no success. Am I missing something?

  • rails rollback updates when task fails

    - by ash34
Hi, I have the following "generate_report" method being called from a rake task, which gets a hash as an input, that contains the reported hours spent by each user on a task and outputs the data as a .csv report. desc "Task reporting" task :report, [:inp_dt] => [:environment] do |t, args| h = select_data(args.inp_dt) /* not shown here */ generate_report(h) end def generate_report(h) out_dir = File.dirname(__FILE__) + '/../../output' myfile = "#{out_dir}" + "/monthly_#{Date.today.strftime("%m%d%Y")}.csv" writer = CSV.open(myfile, 'w') h.each do |h,v| v.each do |key, val| writer << val end end writer.close end where h = {:BILL=>{:PROJA=>["CYR", "00876", "2", 24], :PROJB=>["EPR", "00876", "2", 16]}, :JANE=>{:PROJA=>["TRB", "049576", "2", 16]}} I would like to set/update a 'processed' flag for each reported transaction and only commit the update when the file is written correctly or rollback the updates when the task fails. How can I accomplish this. thanks, ash

  • Ruby (and Rails) nested module syntax

    - by brad
I'm wondering what the difference is between the following two modules # First Example module Parent module Child end end and # Second Example module Parent::Child end Using the 2nd method, it appears as though the Parent module must be previously defined, otherwise I get an 'uninitialized constant' error Given this, what is the preferred way of defining modules such as this and then adding nested children with regards to syntax and file structure (ie. folders etc). Reference to a Rails way would be greatly appreciated. Are these two examples for all intents and purposes equivalent?

  • Looping on a closed range

    - by AProgrammer
How would you fix this code? template <typename T> void closed_range(T begin, T end) { for (T i = begin; i <= end; ++i) { // do something } } T is constrained to be an integer type, can be the wider of such types and can be signed or unsigned begin can be numeric_limits<T>::min() end can be numeric_limits<T>::max() (in which case ++i will overflow in the above code) I've several ways, but none I really like.

  • RESTfully request sub-parts of a representation be of a certain content-type

    - by Grayside
    I am requesting (via Accept: application/json) that an API I'm designing respond as JSON. However, I want the values within that JSON to be specified to conform to text/plain or text/html depending on the capabilities of the client. What is the RESTful best practice for a "sub-type"? How would this work if I formally switched to HAL as the top-level container? Accept: application/json+text/plain { "value": "Hello World" } Accept: application/json+text/html { "value": "<h2>Hello World</h2>" }

  • Rails 3 Join Question for Votes Table

    - by Dex
I have a table posts and a polymorphic table votes. The votes table looks like this: create_table :votes do |t| t.references :user # user_id t.vote # the vote value t.references :votable # votable_type and votable_id end I want to list all posts that the user has not yet voted on. Right now I'm basically taking all the posts they've already voted on and subtracting that from the entire set of posts. It works but it's not very convenient as I currently have it. def self.where_not_voted_on_by(user) sql = "SELECT P.* FROM posts P LEFT OUTER JOIN (" sql << where_voted_on_by(user).to_sql sql << ") ALREADY_VOTED_FOR ON P.id = ALREADY_VOTED_FOR.id WHERE (user_id is null)" puts sql resultset = connection.select_all(sql) results = [] resultset.each do |r| results << Post.new(r) end results end def self.where_voted_on_by(user) joins(:votes.outer).where("user_id = #{user.id}").select("posts.*, votes.user_id") end

  • How can we block the user from unchecking a DataGridView checkbox?

    - by hawbsl
We have a DataGridViewCheckBox column bound to a boolean property in our class. The property setter has some logic which says that under certain conditions a True flag cannot be changed, ie, it stays checked forever. This is on a per record basis. So the entire column can't be readonly, only certain rows. Pseudo code: Public Property Foo() As Boolean Get Return _Foo End Get Set(ByVal value As Boolean) If _Foo And Bar And value = False Then //do nothing, in this scenario once you're true, you stay true Else _Foo = value End If End Set End Property Databinding is handling all of this fine, except that the checkbox is visibly cleared when it's clicked. Then, of course, when the binding / setter is fired (as you move off that cell) it is restored to its checked status per the underlying logic. Ultimately it doesn't matter too much but it's a clumsy bit of UI. How can we intercept the user's click and keep it checked?

  • Are pointers primitive types in C++?

    - by Space_C0wb0y
I was wondering about the last constructor for std::string mentioned here. It says: template<class InputIterator> string (InputIterator begin, InputIterator end); If InputIterator is an integral type, behaves as the sixth constructor version (the one right above this) by typecasting begin and end to call it: string(static_cast<size_t>(begin),static_cast<char>(end)); In any other case, the parameters are taken as iterators, and the content is initialized with the values of the elements that go from the element referred by iterator begin to the element right before the one referred by iterator end. So what does that mean if InputIterator is a char * ?

  • Controlling the alpha of a UIImageView with Slider ..Can' t get it

    - by user1824839

I succeed to do a quite nice app for the moment , than, but i m stuck on this : HOW COULD I CONTROL THE ALPHA OF A UIIMAGEVIEW , WITH A SLIDER EMBEDED IN ANOTHER VIEW ??? ; Basically i' like to do like the alpha slider of this : http://www.edumobile.org/iphone/how-to-make-an-app-2/controlling-a-uiviews-properties-for-ipad/ , but for a UIImageView. I promised i searched for hours , and didnt find how to do it ... Could someone have some minutes to give me ideas ?? Sorry for my poor english too. Thanks if you can. L. The resume of the link i posted, only focussing on the alpha property would be : ( considering a UIView ( View ) embeded in a ViewController ( ViewController ): enter code here ----View.h----- @interface View : UIView @property ( nonatomic, assign ) CGFloat alpha; @end enter code here ----View.m---- @implementation View @synthesize alpha; ?} @end enter code here ------ViewController.h----- import "View.h" @interface ViewController : UIViewController @property (nonatomic, strong) IBOutlet View *view; ?- (IBAction)alphaChanged:(UISlider *)sender; @end enter code here -------ViewController.m------ @interface ViewController () @end @implementation ViewController @synthesize view; (View *)view {?     if (!view) {?        view = [[View alloc] init];?    }?    return view;?} enter code here (IBAction)redChanged:(UISlider *)sender? {?    self.circle.alpha = sender.value;?    [self.circle setNeedsDisplay];?} (void)viewDidLoad ?{?    [super viewDidLoad];?         ?    self.circle.alpha = (CGFloat)1;?} (void)didReceiveMemoryWarning? {?  [super didReceiveMemoryWarning];?    @end enter code here

  • Send XML String as Response

    - by Sri Kumar
Hello All, I am getting my Request from a third party application(different domain) to my ASP application. I am handling the request and doing the business part in my application and as a acknowledgement I need to send XML string as Response to the same Page which POSTED the request to my Application. I was successful in retrieving the input from Request using the following code NameValueCollection postPageCollection = Request.Form; foreach (string name in postPageCollection.AllKeys) { ... = postPageCollection[name]); } But i am not sure how to send back the response along with XML String to the site(different domain)? EDIT: How to get the URL from where the POST happened.

  • hosting a high traffic facebook app (game)

    - by z3cko
we are currently developing a high traffic facebook application. all the traffic will be within one month, where there are 500.000 to 1.000.000 expected users. after that month, the game is over and we have a winner - so the app will be archived. we are currently planning to develop the application with ruby on rails and searching for hosting options that can deal with the traffic. the problem is not so much the users, but the peak values: we will have around 500.000 requests coming daily within a short timeframe (lets say within 3 minutes in the worst case) we are expecting 500.000 to 1.000.000 users of the application, with peaks at 1:00pm (timezone GMT+1), where most (up to 80% of the users) will send most of the requests. the requests are from 11th of june to 11.july - after that, the app/game is closed/over. we are currently developing an aggressive caching mechanism - currently we are thinking about 2 or 3 small apps/webservices, that will handle the load. the load is distributed as follows: a) main application, cached data (11 screens, 200k each) b) voting: every day until 1:00pm (timezone GMT+1) - every user votes with about 10k data sent, high concurrent peak values! questions: is there any specific application setup that is recommendable? are there any hosting partners that can be recommended? thanks!

  • python multiprocessing member variable not set

    - by Jake
In the following script, I get the "stop message received" output but the process never ends. Why is that? Is there another way to end a process besides terminate or os.kill that is along these lines? from multiprocessing import Process from time import sleep class Test(Process): def __init__(self): Process.__init__(self) self.stop = False def run(self): while self.stop == False: print "running" sleep(1.0) def end(self): print "stop message received" self.stop = True if __name__ == "__main__": test = Test() test.start() sleep(1.0) test.end() test.join()

  • Is it "right" to translate error messages?

    - by Iraklis
This is somehow subjective depending on the target translation language, but bear with me for a sec. I have recently been involved in a translation project. The goal was to translate the strings of an MVC framework to the Greek language. 70% of the language strings of the framework where translated, however 30% where intentionally left out. The decision was that we will not translate error messages aimed towards the developer of the application. The reasoning behind this (in short) was: are aimed towards designers/programmers. Programmers ( and even designers :) ) should have a basic understanding of English, at least enough so they can search on it on Google if they do not know what it means. (racist?) are aimed towards the developer and in a perfect world should not be displayed to the end user of the application as they concern the inner workings of the web application itself. i.e "You must set the database name in your database config file." and perhaps most importantly, they make the life of the developer harder when he tries to get more information/help regarding the error. For example the above error yields 8 results in Google (in quotes), whereas its Greek translation yields exactly 0. I know that this depends on the popularity of the target translation language and the application itself. For example I'm guessing that there are is vast amount of documentation regarding German SAP error messages (i know, i know, SAP IS German, but you get the point), as opposed to Greek Error Messages documentation regarding random application X which has about 500 installations worldwide. So to summarize: When you develop language translation packs for your applications do you translate error messages? Do you only do for predominant languages like English/Spanish/German/French? Or do you live them intact? I'm not looking for the "right" or "correct" answer, I'm looking for a "best-practices" answer, or if this problem is defined in any "official" standard/policy that you have had experience with.

  • Unpacking varargin to individual variables

    - by Richie Cotton
I'm writing a wrapper to a function that takes varargin as its inputs. I want to preserve the function signature in the wrapper, but nesting varargin causes all the variable to be lumped together. function inner(varargin) %#ok<VANUS> % An existing function disp(nargin) end function outer(varargin) % My wrapper inner(varargin); end outer('foo', 1:3, {}) % Uh-oh, this is 1 I need a way to unpack varargin in the outer function, so that I have a list of individual variables. There is a really nasty way to do this by constructing a string of the names of the variables to pass the inner, and calling eval. function outer2(varargin) %#ok<VANUS> % My wrapper, second attempt inputstr = ''; for i = 1:nargin inputstr = [inputstr 'varargin{' num2str(i) '}']; %#ok<AGROW> if i < nargin inputstr = [inputstr ', ']; %#ok<AGROW> end end eval(['inner(' inputstr ')']); end outer2('foo', 1:3, {}) % 3, as it should be Can anyone think of a less hideous way of doing things, please?

  • Best Practice for creating Web Services

    - by Holograham
To preface I am new to web development. I am looking at creating a core set of RESTful web services around a valuable document library of sorts (initial CRUD abilities). In doing so I am theoretically creating a perfectly re-usable and scalable back-end to be used by unanticipated applications in the future. My question centers around the best practice for doing this. My initial requirement has me also creating a unique front end. Would I make the front end and back end completely separate projects to enhance the re-usability. It would increase overhead. Looking at using GWT, Restlet, and JEE technology stack if this influences the setup at all.

  • Filtering Questions (posts) by tag_name in TagController#index passing /tags?tag_name=something

    - by bgadoci
    I am trying to get my TagsController#index action to display only the Questions that contain certain tags when passing the search parameter tag_name. I am not getting an error just can't get the filter to work correctly such that upon receiving the /tags?tag_name=something url, only those questions are displayed . Here is the setup: class Tag < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :question def self.search(str) return [] if str.blank? cond_text = str.split.map{|w| "tag_name LIKE ? "}.join(" OR ") cond_values = str.split.map{|w| "%#{w}%"} all(:order => "created_at DESC", :conditions => (str ? [cond_text, *cond_values] : [])) end end and class Question < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :tags, :dependent => :destroy end tag link that would send the URL to the TagsController looks like this: <%= link_to(tag_name, tags_path(:tag_name => tag_name)) %> and outputs: /tags?tag_name=something In my /views/tags/index.html.erb view I am calling the questions by rendering a partial /views/questions/_question.html.erb. <%= render :partial => @questions %> When I send the URL with the search parameter nothing happens. Here is my TagsController#index action: def index @tags = Tag.search(params[:search]).paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 5 @tagsearch = Tag.search(params[:search]) @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 100) @questions = Question.all( :order => 'created_at DESC', :limit => 50) respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @tags } end end How can I properly filter questions displayed in the /views/tags/index.html.erb file for the parameter tag.tag_name?
