  • Using before_create in Rails to normalize a many to many table

    I am working on a pretty standard tagging implementation for a table of recipes. There is a many to many relationship between recipes and tags so the tags table will be normalized. Here are my models: class Recipe < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :tag_joins, :as => :parent has_many :tags, :through => :tag_joins end class TagJoin < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :parent, :polymorphic => true belongs_to :tag, :counter_cache => :usage_count end class Tag < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :tag_joins, :as => :parent has_many :recipes, :through => :tag_joins, :source => :parent , :source_type => 'Recipe' before_create :normalizeTable def normalizeTable t = Tag.find_by_name(self.name) if (t) j = TagJoin.new j.parent_type = self.tag_joins.parent_type j.parent_id = self.tag_joins.parent_id j.tag_id = t.id return false end end end The last bit, the before_create callback, is what I'm trying to get working. My goal is if there is an attempt to create a new tag with the same name as one already in the table, only a single row in the join table is produced, using the existing row in tags. Currently the code dies with: undefined method `parent_type' for #<Class:0x102f5ce38> Any suggestions?

  • calling database driver in java app [basically a swing app]

    I have made a java application that allows a user to choose from certain standards and then allows him to customize those standards according to his needs. Now, the customization [via a swing application] that has been made needs to be persistent. For this we use a database [mysql/access] and hook it to the application so that with each customization made, a table [if non-existent] is created [thus making it runtime and we can not pre-determine the table names or the keys of table etc] and an appropriate entry in the table is made. I have written the driver for this connection. How do I call it in the java application and what approach should I take? I would much appreciate that if somebody can refer me some example that not only shows a sample connection being made via driver but its appropriate calls to the database as well so that i can use it as a guide.

    Hi, I have an interface for logging the exceptions, i.e. IExceptionLogger. This interface has 3 implementations: DBExceptionLogger, XMLExceptionLogger, CSVExceptionLogger. I have an application that will make a use of DBExceptionLogger. The application references only IExceptionLogger. How do I create an instance of DBExceptionLogger within the application. I can't reference the DBExceptionLogger directly since it will break the purpose of having IExceptionLogger interface. Thanks

  • Extra NotifyIcon shown in system tray

    I'm having an issue with an app where my NotifyIcon displays an extra icon. The steps to reproduce it are easy, but the problem is that the extra icon shows up after any of the actual codebehind we've added fires. Put simply, clicking a button triggers execution of method FooBar() which runs all the way through fine but its primary duty is to fire a backgroundworker to log into another of our apps. It only appears if this particular button is clicked. Strangely enough, we have a WndProc method override and if I step through until the extra NotifyIcon appears, it always appears during this method so something else beyond the codebehind must be triggering the behavior.     Hi guys I have to adapt an existing model to a new relation. I have this: A Project has many Employees. the Employees of a Project are organized in some kind of hierarchy (nothing fancy, I resolved this adding a parent_id for each employee to build the 'tree') class Employee < AR:Base belongs_to :project belongs_to :parent, :class_name => 'Employee' has_many :childs, :class_name => 'Employee', :foreign_column => 'parent_id' end class Project < AR:Base has_many :employees, end That worked like a charm, now the new requirement is: The Employees can belong to many Projects at the same time, and the hierarchy will be different according to the project. So I though I will need a new table to build the HABTM, and a new class to access the parent_id to build the tree. Something like class ProjectEmployee < AR:Base belongs_to :project belongs_to :employee belongs_to :parent, :class_name => 'Employee' # <--- ?????? end class Project < AR:Base has_many :project_employee has_many :employees, :through => :project_employee end class Employee < AR:Base has_many :project_employee has_many :projects, :through => :project_employee end How can I access the parent and the childs of an employee for a given project? I need to add and remove childs as wish from the employees of a project. Thank you!

    I'm fairly new to Rails and Rack, but this guy had a seemingly straightforward write-up about using Rack to implement dynamic session domain middleware. The code looks good to and I've implemented it here on my local machine, but I'm still not able to transcend top level domains on a single login.     The application I am using is implementing some session timeout prompt using jquery. There is a timer that counts and if there is no user activity after predefined X minutes it shows user prompt (Your session will end soon... Continue or Logout). It uses the approach found here - http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/227382/Alert-Session-Time-out-in-ASP-Net. However, this doesn't work if user opens new tab: 1) User logs in, timer starts counting user inactivity's. 2) User clicks some link that opens in new window (for example, in our case it is a long report running). Second tab is active, there is some response (crossbacks / postbacks that doesn't end session). 3) Second browser tab is active, there is some activity that doesn't end session. 4) However, first browser tab is inactive and counter is "thinking" that session should be closed, it displays appropriate message and then logout user. This is not what we want. So the given approach is just some session timeout fix, but if user is active in another tab, then application will logout user anyway. That is not the desired thing. We have a Report Page. It functions so that it opens report in a new tab/window. And it could be run quite long. Report section take care of some callbacks, so session wont end in this tab. However, it would end in the second tab.

EDIT: The Error is: undefined method `base_class' for String:Class with params being: "speaker"=>{"speakable"=>"1063885469", "session_id"=>"1007692731"} The value passed to speakable is the id of the Speaker/Company. Yes, this is the value I specified the collection_select to return, but how can I manage to supply both values (speakable_id and speakable_type) ?

  • accessing specific icons from a Multi-Icon (.ico) file

    Dear community. I would like to know if the following is possible. I have an .ico file, containing several sizes and color depths. However, it also contains some custom made sizes, that are going to be used inside my application. The application accesses the icon trough a resource DLL. (The intention is that the DLL is provided by a third party developer) Is there any way to pinpoint exactly which of the icons in the .ico file to use in my application? Like I want this size to appear here on my GUI etc. For instance, I am making a button in my application, and I would like my custom made 15*32 icon from my .ico file to be displayed on the button. I know this is possible by adding the bitmaps one at a time to the resource DLL, giving each of them a unique name. But it would be easier, if I am able to identify the different contents of the icon file instead. Is it possible in some way to look at the icon file as an array of icons or something like that? Any help is much appreciated. It seems quite hard to find information about this subject on the web. Oh, and I am writing my application in C#, using MFC DLL (from Visual C++ to create my resource DLL)

    Just curious if I am overlooking something simple here. I have deployed the remote_form_for in the show.html.erb code before to render comments on a post (project in this case) without a problem. I have moved this code to the index view and seems to degrade to the normal form_for action (page refresh). I am not getting any javascript errors so not sure what is wrong here.   • How can I access the iPhone favorite numbers using Objective C?

    Hi! I am writing an application using Objective C and I want to access the iPhone favorites numbers (the ones that can be found in the "Phone" application). I've searched among the properties specific to each contact from the Address Book and I even had a look at the Address Book database, but I couldn't identify which property or field from the database indicates which are the favorite numbers. Since "Phone" is an application installed by Apple on the iPhone I was expecting to find such a property in the database. However, I think that it might be possible that this application stores the favorite numbers independently of the Address Book database. Has anyone encountered this problem before and if yes, could you please clarify this matter for me? Thanks a lot! Cipri

  • Why this search can not generate correct result?

    Hi, All: Below is to find same customer and if he is in list, the number add one. If he is not in the list, just add him in the list. I use Search function to do this, but failed and generated incorrect records. It can not find the customer or the right number of customers. But if I use For..loop to iterate the list, it does well and can find the customer and add new customer in that for..loop search procedure. (I did not paste for ..loop search procedrue here). Another problem is that there is no difference between setting list.sorted true and false. It seems Search function is not correct. This search function is from an example of delphi textbook.
