• Why does my call to Activator.CreateInstance intermittently fail?

  I'm using the following code to access the Windows Explorer Shell's band site service: Guid GUID_TrayBandSiteService = new Guid(0xF60AD0A0, 0xE5E1, 0x45cb, 0xB5, 0x1A, 0xE1, 0x5B, 0x9F, 0x8B, 0x29, 0x34); Type shellTrayBandSiteService = Type.GetTypeFromCLSID(GUID_TrayBandSiteService, true); site = Activator.CreateInstance(shellTrayBandSiteService) as IBandSite; Mostly, it works great. A very small percentage of the time (less than 1%), the call to Activator.CreateInstance throws the following exception: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040154): Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {F60AD0A0-E5E1-45CB-B51A-E15B9F8B2934} failed due to the following error: 80040154. at System.RuntimeTypeHandle.CreateInstance(RuntimeType type, Boolean publicOnly, Boolean noCheck, Boolean& canBeCached, RuntimeMethodHandle& ctor, Boolean& bNeedSecurityCheck) at System.RuntimeType.CreateInstanceSlow(Boolean publicOnly, Boolean fillCache) at System.RuntimeType.CreateInstanceImpl(Boolean publicOnly, Boolean skipVisibilityChecks, Boolean fillCache) at System.Activator.CreateInstance(Type type, Boolean nonPublic) I've looked up the error code, and it appears to indicate that the service isn't registered. That's nonsense in my case, since I'm trying to access a service provided by the operating system (explorer.exe, to be specific). I'm stumped. What might cause Activator.CreateInstance fail, but only rarely?

• UILabel reset after Autorotate

  Hi, I have a UILabel in a view that is set by calling a method against my view controller. The app is a TABBar app and the VC is in the MORE section. When I rotate the phone the label disappears (don't mind that) when I rotate back the label is showing all .......... (the value it is set to in the XIB) I added a line to set the label in the shouldAutoRotateToOrientation method lblProductTxt.titleLabel.text = self.productText; when autorotating what viewcontroller methods are being called. ?? the shouldAutoRotateToOrientation method doesn't get called when the VC is in the More section but when I move it it does get called but has no affect on the labeltext

  The code in this event is repeated exactly in two other event handlers. How do I put the repeated code into a method and call that method from the event handlers so I only have to maintain it in one place? Will it create any problem if i remove the method (explicit implementation of interface) that i have marked "redundant" above? PS: I understand that explicit implementation of interface is very important, and it can be used when we need to give access to a method at interface level only, and to use two interface with same signature of method.

• .NET assembly loading problem

  I'm maintaining the build process for our application which consist of an ASP.Net application, two different Win32 services and other sysadmin related applications. I want to end up with the following configuration to be used both when debugging & deploying. libraires/ -- Contains shared assemblies used by all other apps. web/ -- ASP.Net site service1/ -- Win32 service 1 (seen under the service control manager) service2/ -- Win32 service 2 adminstuff/ -- Sysadmin / support stuff used for troubleshooting The problem is assembly probing privatePath in the app.config does not support relative directories outside the application root. Ie: can't use ../libraries. Very frustating... If I strong name our assemblies, I could use codeBase config element which seems to support absolute path but you need to specify each assembly individually. I also tried hooking into AppDomain.AssemblyResolve event, but I'm getting FileNotFoundException from the .Net Fusion before I can even register the event handler in Main(). I don't like the idea of registering the assemblies in the GAC. Too much hassle when deploying / upgrading application. Is there another to do this without having the specify the path of each requiered assembly ?

  Is it possible (and if so, safe) to create/use a block which takes a double pointer as an argument? For instance: - (void)methodWithBlock:(void (^)(NSError **error))block; Additional context, research, and questions: I'm using ARC. When I declare the method above and attempt to call it, XCode autocompletes my method invocation as follows: [self methodWithBlock:^(NSError *__autoreleasing *error) {}]; What does __autoreleasing mean here and why is it being added? I presume it has something to do with ARC. If this is possible and safe, can the pointer still be dereferenced in the block as it would be anywhere else? In general, what are the important differences between doing what I'm describing, and simply passing a double pointer as a method parameter (e.g. - (void)methodWithDoublePointer:(NSError **)error;)? What special considerations, if any, should be taken into account (again assuming this is possible at all)?

  Hello. I have a CFC as singletone object in Application scope. One of the methods is used for massive data processing and periodically causes the "Java heap space" errors. EDIT All variables inside the method are VAR-scoped, so they should not be kept in the object scope when invokation ended. It can be a bit dumb question for Java people, but I'd like to know how Java garbage collector cleans up the CFC methods memory: only when whole request ends, or maybe right after each method/function invokation? Second option is interesting because it can allow me to split my large method into the few, as one of the possible optimizations.

• Avoiding anemic domain model - a real example

  I am trying to understand Anemic Domain Models and why they are supposedly an anti-pattern. Here is a real world example. I have an Employee class, which has a ton of properties - name, gender, username, etc public class Employee { public string Name { get; set; } public string Gender { get; set; } public string Username { get; set; } // Etc.. mostly getters and setters } Next we have a system that involves rotating incoming phone calls and website enquiries (known as 'leads') evenly amongst sales staff. This system is quite complex as it involves round-robining enquiries, checking for holidays, employee preferences etc. So this system is currently seperated out into a service: EmployeeLeadRotationService. public class EmployeeLeadRotationService : IEmployeeLeadRotationService { private IEmployeeRepository _employeeRepository; // ...plus lots of other injected repositories and services public void SelectEmployee(ILead lead) { // Etc. lots of complex logic } } Then on the backside of our website enquiry form we have code like this: public void SubmitForm() { var lead = CreateLeadFromFormInput(); var selectedEmployee = Kernel.Get<IEmployeeLeadRotationService>() .SelectEmployee(lead); Response.Write(employee.Name + " will handle your enquiry. Thanks."); } I don't really encounter many problems with this approach, but supposedly this is something that I should run screaming from because it is an Anemic Domain Model. But for me its not clear where the logic in the lead rotation service should go. Should it go in the lead? Should it go in the employee? What about all the injected repositories etc that the rotation service requires - how would they be injected into the employee, given that most of the time when dealing with an employee we don't need any of these repositories?

• Model Binding an IList of selected items only

  I have an action method setup: public ActionResult Delete(IList<Product> products) And a table of products in my view. I have got Model Binding working so that on submit I can populate the products list. But I would like to populate it with only the products that are selected via a checkbox. I think I could do it by changing the action method to this: public ActionResult Delete(IList<Product> products, IList<int> toDelete) And passing the list of check boxes to the toDelete but I would really like to avoid changing the method signature if possible. Is there a way to pass only the selected items? Or am I going to have to write a custom ModelBinder?

  I know its not possible to define a constructor in a interface. But im wondering why, because i think i could be very useful. So you could be sure that some fields in a class are defined for every implementaiton of this interface. For example consider the following message class: public class MyMessage { public MyMessage(String receiver) { this.receiver = receiver; } private String receiver; public void send() { //some implementation for sending the mssage to the receiver } } If a define a Interface for this class so that i can have more classes which implement the message interface, i can only define the send method and not the constructor. So how can i assure that every implementation of this class really has an receiver setted? If i use a method like setReceiver(String receiver) i can't be sure that this method is really called. In the constructor i could assure it.

  Im trying to select all the li tags of the document and check if it hasClassName('yes') so if it has, it will remove it. But im having a TypeError: Object [object HTMLLIElement], has no method 'hasClassName' error. This is the DOM method: document.observe("dom:loaded", function() { $(document.body).select('input').each(function(element) { element.observe('click', function() { init(); }); init(); }); }); The previous code will take the init fuction and check the if there are checked inputs and add them the 'yes' class name, but if I un-check those inputs, the class remains. • Why would it be a bad idea to have database connection open between client requests?

  1) Book I’m reading argues that connections shouldn’t be opened between client requests, since they are a finite resource. I realize that max pool size can quickly be reached and thus any further attempts to open a connection will be queued until connection becomes available and for that reason it would be imperative that we release connection as soon as possible. But assuming all request will open connection to the same DB, then I’m not sure how having a connection open between two client requests would be any less efficient than having each request first acquiring a connection from connection pool and later returning that object to connection pool? 2) Book also recommends that when database code is encapsulated in a dedicated data access class, then method M opening a database connection should also close that connection. a) I assume one reason why M should also close it, is because if method M opening the connection doesn’t also close it, but instead this connection object is used inside several methods, then it’s more likely that a programmer will forget to close it. b) Are there any other reasons why a method opening the connection should also close it? thanx

  I know this is somewhat of a dead horse, but I'm not finding a satisfactory answer. First let me say, I am NOT dealing with a web app, otherwise managing NH Session is quite simple. I have a bunch of enterprise components. Those components have their own service layer that will act on multiple repositories. For example: Claim Component Claim Processing Service Claim Repository Billing Component Billing Service Billing REpository Policy Component PolicyLockService Policy Repository Now I may have a console, or windows application that needs to coordinate an operation that involves each of the services. I want to write the services to be injected with (DI) their required repositories. The Repositories should have an ISession, or similar, injected into them so that I can have this operation performed under one ISession/ITransaction. I'm aware of the Unit Of Work pattern and the many samples out there, but none of them showed DI. I'm also leery of [ThreadStatic] because this stuff can also be used from WCF and I have found enough posts describing how to do that. I've read about Business Conversations, but need something simple that each windows/console app can easily bootstrap since we have alot of these apps and some pretty inexperienced developers. So how can I configure StructureMap to inject the same ISession into each of the dependent repositories from an application? • Ruby on Rails form_remote_tag missing template

  I'm using form_remote_tag(:url => {:controller => "home", :action => "search"}, :update => "mydiv"). When I click submit on the form "mydiv" is populated with the error "Template is missing. Missing template home/search.erb in view path app/views". I've tried multiple render options in def search, but they all result in the same error. It looks like the search method is trying to use it's default render even though I'm specifying what I want. I've tried: render 'index' render :text => 'Return this from my method!' Is my url incorrect? Is it not submitting back to my home controller's search method?

  I am trying to create a ListMenu using data from an SQLite database to define the name of each MenuItem. So in a class called menu.java I have defined the array String classes [] = {}; which should hold each menu item name. In a DBAdapter class I created a function so the user can insert info to a table (This all works fine btw). public long insertContact(String name, String code, String location, String comments, int days, int start, int end, String type) { ContentValues initialValues = new ContentValues(); initialValues.put(KEY_NAME, name); initialValues.put(KEY_CODE, code); initialValues.put(KEY_LOCATION, location); initialValues.put(KEY_COMMENTS, comments); initialValues.put(KEY_DAYS, days); initialValues.put(KEY_START, start); initialValues.put(KEY_END, end); initialValues.put(KEY_TYPE, type); return db.insert(DATABASE_TABLE, null, initialValues); } It would be the Strings inserted into KEY_NAME that I need to populate that String array with. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks so much for the help guys. If I implement that function by Sam/Mango the program crashes, am I using it incorrectly or is the error due to the unknown size of the array? In that method I have the code above that resizes my image and at the end of the method I have a return newImage; The instruments show me a leak at line UIGraphicsBeginImageContext(targetSize); //instruments show here a leak 128bytes What am I doing wrong? Where exactly is the leak?

• Using pam_python in a script running with mod_python

I decided to write the backend of the site using Python and mod_python on Apache. To authenticate the users, I thought I could use python_pam to query the PAM service.
