• Broken tables in RichTextBox control (word wrap)

  We are having problems with the Windows.Forms.RichTextBox control in Visual Studio 2008. We are trying to display text supplied as an RTF file by a 3rd party in a windows forms application (.NET 3.5). In this RTF text file there are tables, which contain text that spans multiple lines. The RTF file displays correctly when opened with either WordPad or Word 2003. However, when we load the RTF file into the RichTextBox control, or copy & paste the whole text (including the table) into the control, the table does not display correctly - the cells are only single line, without wrapping. I have found this exact problem asked on another forum without an answer (in fact that's where the link to the images come from) so I'm hoping stack overflow does better ;-) My preferred solution would be to use code or a 3rd party control that can correctly render the RTF. However, I suspect the problem is that the RichTextBox control only supports a subset of the full RTF spec, so another option would be to modify the RTF directly to remove the unsupported control codes or otherwise fix the RTF file itself (in which case any information as to what control codes need to be removed or modified would be a huge help).

• Consume webservice from a .NET DLL - app.config problem

  Hi, I'm building a DLL, let's call it mydll.dll, and in it I sometimes need to call methods from webservice, myservice. mydll.dll is built using C# and .NET 3.5. To consume myservice from mydll I've Added A Service in Visual Studio 2008, which is more or less the same as using svcutil.exe. Doing so creates a class I can create, and adds endpoint and bindings configurations to mydll app.config. The problem here is that mydll app.config is never loaded. Instead, what's loaded is the app.config or web.config of the program I use mydll in. I expect mydll to evolve, which is why I've decoupled it's funcionality from the rest of my system to begin with. During that evolution it will likely add more webservice to which it'll call, ruling out manual copy-paste ways to overcome this problem. I've looked at several possible approaches to attacking this issue: Manually copy endpoints and bindings from mydell app.config to target EXE or web .config file. Couples the modules, not flexible Include endpoints and bindings from mydll app.config in target .config, using configSource (see here). Also add coupling between modules Programmatically load mydll app.config, read endpoints and bindings, and instantiate Binding and EndpointAddress. Use a different tool to create local frontend for myservice I'm not sure which way to go. Option 3 sounds promising, but as it turns out it's a lot of work and will probably introduce several bugs, so it doubtfully pays off. I'm also not familiar with any tool other than the canonical svcutil.exe. Please either give pros and cons for the above alternative, provide tips for implementing any of them, or suggest other approaches. Thanks, Asaf

• Why does this class declaration not work on Visual Studio

  So I'm trying to get some code that is written for gcc to compile on Visual Studio 2008. I have tried adding 'typename' everywhere I can think of, but at this point in time I'm thinking it's just a bug in the Dinkumware STL. Can anyone explain what's happening, and/or offer a solution? • Why is TransactionScope operation is not valid?

  I have a routine which uses a recursive loop to insert items into a SQL Server 2005 database The first call which initiates the loop is enclosed within a transaction using TransactionScope. When I first call ProcessItem the myItem data gets inserted into the database as expected. However when ProcessItem is called from either ProcessItemLinks or ProcessItemComments I get the following error. “The operation is not valid for the state of the transaction” I am running this in debug with VS 2008 on Windows 7 and have the MSDTC running to enable distributed transactions. The code below isn’t my production code but is set out exactly the same. The AddItemToDatabase is a method on a class I cannot modify and uses a standard ExecuteNonQuery() which creates a connection then closes and disposes once completed. I have looked at other posting on here and the internet and still cannot resolve this issue. • Primary Key Identity Value Increments On Unique Key Constraint Violation

  I have a SqlServer 2008 table which has a Primary Key (IsIdentity=Yes) and three other fields that make up a Unique Key constraint. In addition I have a store procedure that inserts a record into the table and I call the sproc via C# using a SqlConnection object. The C# sproc call works fine, however I have noticed interesting results when the C# sproc call violates the Unique Key constraint.... When the sproc call violates the Unique Key constraint, a SqlException is thrown - which is no surprise and cool. However, I notice that the next record that is successfully added to the table has a PK value that is not exactly one more than the previous record - For example: Say the table has five records where the PK values are 1,2,3,4, and 5. The sproc attempts to insert a sixth record, but the Unique Key constraint is violated and, so, the sixth record is not inserted. Then the sproc attempts to insert another record and this time it is successful. - This new record is given a PK value of 7 instead of 6. Is this normal behavior? If so, can you give me a reason why this is so? (If a record fails to insert, why is the PK index incremented?) If this is not normal behavior, can you give me any hints as to why I am seeing these symptoms?

  Is there a widely-used algorithm that has time complexity worse than that of another known algorithm but it is a better choice in all practical situations (worse complexity but better otherwise)? An acceptable answer might be in a form: There are algorithms A and B that have O(N**2) and O(N) time complexity correspondingly, but B has such a big constant that it has no advantages over A for inputs less then a number of atoms in the Universe. Examples highlights from the answers: Simplex algorithm -- worst-case is exponential time -- vs. known polynomial-time algorithms for convex optimization problems. A naive median of medians algorithm -- worst-case O(N**2) vs. known O(N) algorithm. Backtracking regex engines -- worst-case exponential vs. O(N) Thompson NFA -based engines. All these examples exploit worst-case vs. average scenarios. Are there examples that do not rely on the difference between the worst case vs. average case scenario? Related: The Rise of ``Worse is Better''. (For the purpose of this question the "Worse is Better" phrase is used in a narrower (namely -- algorithmic time-complexity) sense than in the article) Python's Design Philosophy: The ABC group strived for perfection. For example, they used tree-based data structure algorithms that were proven to be optimal for asymptotically large collections (but were not so great for small collections). This example would be the answer if there were no computers capable of storing these large collections (in other words large is not large enough in this case). Coppersmith–Winograd algorithm for square matrix multiplication is a good example (it is the fastest (2008) but it is inferior to worse algorithms). Any others? • "Executing SQL directly; no cursor" error when using SCOPE_IDENTITY

  There wasn't much on google about this error, so I'm askin here. I'm switching a PHP web application from using MySQL to SQL Server 2008 (using ODBC, not php_mssql). Running queries or anything else isn't a problem, but when I try to do scope_identity (or any similar functions), I get the error "Executing SQL directly; no cursor". I'm doing this immediately after an insert, so it should still be in scope. Running the same insert statement then query for the insert ID works fine in SQL Server Management Studio. Here's my code right now (everything else in the database wrapper class works fine for other queries, so I'll assume it isn't relevant right now): function insert_id(){ $x = $this->query_first("SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY('session_log') as insert_id"); echo "($x)"; return $x; } query_first being a function that returns the first result from the first field of a query (basically the equivalent of execute_scalar() on .net). • WCF RIA Silverlight deployment issues

  It seems the world is awash with people having problems deploying RIA WCF services, and now I'm one too. I've already tried a bunch of things, but to no avail. I need WCF RIA to support a Silverlight 3 application I've built. The short story is, using the new WCF RIA services (Nov 09?) I open VS 2008, create new project (silverlight application), enabling ".NET RIA services". Add new item to web project - Linq2SQL dbml file (from SQL 2005 DB prepared earlier) and compile. I add a new item to the web project - domain service (link the tables I need) and compiled. Using the domain context I "Load" data with a standard RIA get query in the MainPage and add a TextBlock to display returned data. Build & run (cassini) - success. Using VS to publish to IIS on local PC - success. Using VS to publish to test server (IIS6) - browse to location and the Silverlight app loads but Fiddler tells me I've got a 404 on all the the WCF .svc requests. Use Fiddler to "launch IE" on the service request and it's true - 404. I have already run aspnet_regiis, ServiceModelReg and added mime types for .xap, .xaml, .xbap and .svc. I have included the System.Web.Ria and System.Web.DomainServices DLL with copy local true. I need help with either a) a solution b) an approach to find a solution

• Izpack: Creating custom panels

  Hi, I am trying to create a custom panel for an IzPack installer. This means that I have to extend IzPanel. However, it appears that if I do this, the extended panel needs to be in the com.izforge.izpack.panels package. Then I found this post, which stipulates that: As such, you must include installer.jar from the lib folder of IzPack in the build path of your custom panel project. Your custom panel /must/ extend com.izforge.izpack.installer.IzPanel. Furthermore, it /must/ reside in the com.izforge.izpack.panels package. On top of it all, your build jar's name /must/ be the same as the unqualified name of your custom panel class. I take issue with the 1st and 4th points. They imply that I have to create an additional JAR file for each custom IzPanel that I create. Also, I would have to modify the IzPack installation by adding these JARs to one of its subdirectories. Is this article outdated (2008) and can it be safely ignored, or is this still true? If not how can I avoid this and simply have the extended IzPanel on the classpath instead? Thank you!

• Nested instances in C#

  I'm trying to translate some C++ code for a neural net into C#. I first took the C++ code, from a 1993 book, and ran it. Then translated it using the STL and it ran again. Now I'm trying to get it into C# with Visual Web Developer 2008 Express. The original code used "friend" classes and I'm just trying to do the same making everything "public". The following code compiles but only gives null references when run: public class ineuron { public Double weight, activation; public ineuron(Double set_wt) { weight = set_wt; } ... public class netwrk { public oneuron onrn; public ineuron in1, in2, in3, in4; public netwrk( Double inp_1, Double inp_2, Double inp_3, Double inp_4 ) { ineuron in1 = new ineuron(inp_1); ineuron in2 = new ineuron(inp_2); ... and later, in some code called by a button push: netwrk ntw = new netwrk(i_n1, i_n2, i_n3, i_n4); Unfortunately, trying to use: ntw.in1.activation etc. leads to null reference runtime errors.   Hi, I am trying my hardest to find the simplest way to create a basic "model first" entity framework example. However I am struggling with the actually generation of the database, particularly the running of the SQL against the database. Tools Visual Studio 2010 SQL Server 2008 Express Process Create a new class project Add a new Server-Database item (mdf) named "Database1.mdf" to the project Add an empty ADO.net Entity Model Create a simple entity (Person: Id, Name) Generate the Script selecting the Database1 connection created for me by visual studio Right click the script editor and select the "Execute SQL..." option Log in to SQLEXPRESS This is where is falls over saying it cant find a database name "Database1". The "problem" is that the SQL server has not had Database1 attached to it. I am 100% positive that Visual Studio use to attach a database to SQLExpress when it created a new database (Step 2). This appears to not be the case any more (even the beta of VS2010 did it). Can someone confirm this? or tell me how to get this to happen? Is there a way that I can modify the TSQL script to use an un-attached database. ie a file. I know I can use SQL Management Studio or sqlcmd to attach the database, but I would ideally like to avoid the solutions as I would like to see the cleanest method of just using visual studio. Ideal Solutions (in order of most prefered) Get visual studio to attach the newly created database Modify the generated SQL to point to file Thanks in advance.

• C++ Formatting like visual studio c# formatting

  I like the way Visual studio (2008) format C# code; unfortunately it seems it doesn't behave in the same way when writing C++ code. For example, when I write a code in this way: class Test { public: int x; Test() {this->x=20;} ~Test(){} }; in C# (ok this is C++ but you can understand what I mean), this part: Test() {this->x=20;} Will become Test() { this->x=20; } This is obviusly a stupid example, but there are a lot of things where putting brackets in correct position, indenting code and other things with my own hands becomes boring. I can obviusly change editor if you suggest me a good one for C++ code, I would like to find something with these features: Intellisense (like vs, at least similiar) Custom class coloring (in c# they are cyan, why are they black in c++?) Wordwrap (possibly) Documentation when you mouse over a method/variable Auto formatting (when you close a bracket like "}" in c# you'll get everything well formatted) obviusly I can find other features, but this is what is in my mind at the moment. • Questions regarding ordering of catch statements in catch block - compiler specific or language stan

  I am currently using Visual Studio Express C++ 2008, and have some questions about catch block ordering. Unfortunately, I could not find the answer on the internet so I am posing these questions to the experts. I notice that unless catch (...) is placed at the end of a catch block, the compilation will fail with error C2311. For example, the following would compile: catch (MyException) { } catch (...) { } while the following would not: catch (...) { } catch (MyException) { } a. Could I ask if this is defined in the C++ language standard, or if this is just the Microsoft compiler being strict? b. Do C# and Java have the same rules as well? c. As an aside, I have also tried making a base class and a derived class, and putting the catch statement for the base class before the catch statement for the derived class. This compiled without problems. Are there no language standards guarding against such practice please?

• conditionals for C++ using MSBuild/vsbuild?

  I have a C++ project in Visual Studio 2008 and I'd like to be able to compile several versions from the command line, defining conditional variables (aka #define). If it were just a single file to compile I'd use something like cl /D, but this is complex enough that I would like to be able to use VS's other features like the build order etc. I've seen a similar question asked in stackoverflow and the answer was to use /p:DefineConstants="var1;var2". This doesn't seem to work with C++ though. The other problem with that answer is that it replaces the conditional variables, instead of adding to them. The vcproj files for C++ look quite different. If msbuild (or vsbuild) had a way to change Configurations/Tool[name="VCCLCompilerTool"] we'd be golden. But I haven't found such an option. The vcproj files are under source control so I'd rather not have a script mess with them. I've considered doubling the number of configurations (one with the #define, one without). That'd be annoying, and I'm especially unhappy with having to modify these configurations in tandem every time I need to modify anything there. A previous similar question found no solution. I'm hoping that has changed since? How would you go about building those variants (with and without define) from the command line? Thanks!

  Hi, I am trying to define a multicolumn listview in xaml (visual studio 2008) and then add items to it in c#. I have seen many posts on this subject, and tried the various methods, but I am getting errors. my xaml code is below, VS does not flag any errors on it. <ListView Height="234.522" Name="chartListView" Width="266.337"> <ListView.View> <GridView> <GridViewColumn Header="Name" Width="70"/> <GridViewColumn Header="ID" /> </GridView> </ListView.View> </ListView> to try and add data to the columns, I created a button and put the code in the button click : private void button3_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { chartListView.Items.Add("item1").SubItems.Add("item2"); } the error that is showing is on Subitems is: 'int' does not contain a definition for 'SubItems' and no extension method 'SubItems' accepting a first argument of type 'int' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) D:\devel\VS\pchart\pchart\pchart\Window1.xaml.cs Also, I tried looking at some other posts on listview controls such as http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1260812/listview-inserting-items i tried the code there : ListViewItem item = new ListViewItem(); item.Text=anInspector.getInspectorName().ToString(); and got almost the same error on item.Text as i did with SubItems. is there something earlier in my code, or project definition that i am missing? • multi thread apps crashes in release mode

  Hello, I'm using Visual Studio 2008 (programming in c). I've a weird problem I worte a program that has 2 threads that runs simultaneously, a recording thread (using audio card to record into memory) and a translation thread (using a speech engine to recognize the words). when I run my program in debug mode (aka setting a breakpoint in the code) it runs great, however when I run in debug mode or release mode (outside the visual studio enviroment) it crashes and give me the following exception: "Unhandled exception at 0x7c911129 in LowLevel.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x014c7245."   I got a web deyploment project for a web application project in vs 2008. While building the web deployment project, I want to replace properties in the web.config. My settings are autogenrated by the deisgner. <applicationSettings> <NAMESPACE.Properties.Settings> <setting name="Testenvironment" serializeAs="String"> <value>True</value> </setting> </NAMESPACE.Properties.Settings> </applicationSettings> In the config file which contains the settings for the specific server looks like the following: <?xml version="1.0"?> <applicationSettings> <NAMESPACE.Properties.Settings> <setting name="Testenvironment" serializeAs="String"> <value>False</value> </setting> </NAMESPACE.Properties.Settings> </applicationSettings> Sadly, this does not work. I get an error "The format of a configSource file must be an element containing the name of the section" that highlights the second line (2nd example code). How must the Tag be named in order to make evertything work? Edit: Deleting the "applicationSetting"-Tags does not work either.

• Using MSADO15.DLL and C++ with MinGW/GCC on Windows Vista

  INTRODUCTION Hi, I am very new to C++, is my 1st statement. I have started initially with VC++ 2008 Express, I've notice that GCC becomes kind of standard so I am trying to make the right steps event from the beginning. I have written a piece of code that connects to MSSQL Server via ADO, on VC++ it's working like a charm by importing MSADO15.dll: #import "msado15.dll" no_namespace rename("EOF", "EndOfFile") Because I am going to move from VC++ I was looking for an alternative (eventually multi-platform) IDE, so I stick (for this time) with Code::Block (I'm using last nightly buil, SVN 6181). As compiler I choose to use GCC 3.4.5 (ported via MinGW 5.1.6), under Vista. I was trying to compile a simple "hello world" application with GCC that use/import the same msado15.dll (#import "c:\Program Files\Common Files\System\ADO\msado15.dll" no_namespace rename("EOF", "EndOfFile")) and I was surprised to see a lot of compile-time errors. I was expected that the #import compiler's directive will generate a library from "msado15.dll" so it can link to it later (link-edit time or whatever).   Hi all I've followed this tutorial to try to add a template to Visual Studio: http://www.switchonthecode.com/tutorials/visual-studio-how-to-create-item-templates The template I have created is designed to add one predefined .aspx and one predefined .aspx.cs file to the project. • SQL Compact error: Unable to load DLL 'sqlceme35.dll'. The specified module could not be found

  Hi - I'm developing a Winforms application using Visual Studio 2008 C# that uses a SQL compact 3.5 database on the client. The client will most likely be 32 bit XP or Vista machines. I'm using a standard Windows Installer project that creates an msi file and setup.exe to install the app on a client machine. I'm new to SQL compact so I haven't had to distribute a client database like this before now. When I run the setup.exe (on new Windows XP 32 bit with SP2 and IE 7) it installs fine but when I run the app I get the error below: Unable to load DLL 'sqlceme35.dll'. The specified module could not be found I spent a few hours searching this error already but all I can find are issues relating to installing on 64 bit Windows, none relating to normal 32 bit that I'm using. The install app copies the all the dependant files that it found into the specified install directory, including the System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll file (assembly version 3.5.1.0). The database file is in a directory called 'data' off the application directory, and the connection string for it is <add name="Tickets.ieOutlet.Properties.Settings.TicketsLocalConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=|DataDirectory|\data\TicketsLocal.sdf" providerName="Microsoft.SqlServerCe.Client.3.5" /> Some questions I have: should the app be able to find the dll if it's in the same directory i.e. local to the app, or do I need to install it in the GAC? (If so cam I use the Windows Installer to install a dll in the GAC?) is there anything else I need to distribute with the app in order to use a Sql Compact database? there are other dlls also such as MS interop for exporting data to Excel on the client. Do these need to be installed in the GAC or will locating them in the application directory suffice? TIA, Ciaran.

• Is there something like a "long running offline transaction" for NHibernate or any other ORM?

  In essence this is a followup of this question. I'm beginning to feel that I should give up the whole idea, but I'll give it one more shot. What I want is pretty much like a DB transaction. It should track my changes to the DB and then in the end allow me to either commit or rollback them. If I insert an object, I should get it back in my next (appropriate) SELECT query. If I delete it, future SELECT queries should not return it. Etc. But there is one catch - this transaction would be very long running. It would start when the user opened a form (I'm talking about Windows Forms here), and the commit/rollback would be when the user closed it(with OK/Cancel). So it could take anywhere between seconds and days. This requirement rules out a standard DB transaction because that would lock the tables/rows it touched, and other users wouldn't be able to use the system. Also the transaction should not commit ANY changes to the DB until it was really committed. So if one user makes some changes, others don't see them until OK button is hit. This prevents errors in case the computer crashes or is disconnected from the network. I'm quite OK if the solution puts constraints on my model (I'm using MSSQL 2008, btw). I can design the DB/code any way I like. I'm also fine with the idea that a commit could fail because someone already modified one of the objects my transaction touched. Is there anything like this? I looked at NHibernate.Burrow, but I'm not sure that that's the thing I want. Added: It's the very beginning of the project so I'm not tied to NHibernate. I started out with it but I can still change easily.
