• mysql C connector unresolved symbols on Win2k8 but not on XP?

  I have a visual C++ 2008 express project which compiles fine on Windows XP with mysql C connector 6.0.2. When I copy the project over to a Windows Server 2008 x64 machine, it gets a bunch of linker errors like "unresolved external symbol _mysql_server_end@0" "unresolved external symbol _mysql_close@4" "unresolved external _mysql_real_connect@32". Is the mysql C connector 6.0.2 known to not work with Win Server 2008? (Note, the C connector is installed into the same place on both machines, and since I just copied over the project wholesale, it still has the correct libmysql.lib include. The interesting thing is that the errors I get on XP if I remove the libmysql.lib are not the same errors I'm getting on Win2k8, so that's what makes me think it might be an incompatibility...or maybe it's just because win2k8 is x64 and XP is x86?) • Visualize compiler warnings

  I'm looking for a way to visualize compiler warnings and remarks, by annotating or otherwise showing which lines cause a report. This is much like a modern IDE like NetBeans or Eclipse already does, but I'd like to take output from several compilers (and other static code analysis tools) at once, and create one single annotation in order to get a better overview. The rationale is that we've seen some problems go completely undetected by, say, Visual Studio 2005, but accurately detected with a proprietary ARM compiler, and vice versa. Cross-referencing warnings could potentially locate problems better, but doing so completely manually is infeasible. Have you heard of such a tool? Could an open-source IDE like Eclipse be extended to use several compilers at once, or has it already been done?

  We're debating whether our future Windows UI development should be WinForms or WPF. How have some of you made this decision? Most of our applications are LOB applications, and I'm not sure I see a clear and overwhelming benefit to WPF for these types of applications. However, my knowledge of WPF is limited. I'm also a little concerned that WPF will be in vogue for another couple years and then Microsoft will get tired of it and push something else on us. I guess one argument against this is the fact that Visual Studio 2010 is a WPF application. Thanks.

If you ever working with .NET, you would know that there is Assert class that will automatically wake up and attach debugger if necessary and then have debugger (Visual Studio) pausing at the Assert command, given the Assert command failed. Given I'm running a java program and having debugger connected, then how can I have debugger to break on certain condition without manually setup a break point? • Why is a report, in SSRS, when viewed in preview mode looks different when viewed in print layout mo

  I have a report that was originally built in report builder and then imported into Visual Studio to add some other formating to it. The report has a header and a body section. In the body section there is a column that shows commission and the commission is subtotaled for each sales person. There is a page break for each sales person as well. When I preview the report, the subtotal appears as it should for each sales person, but when I either look at it in print layout mode or send it to the printer, the subtotal appears in the body section of the next page, which is the next sales person. Why is it behaving like this and how can I fix this? Thanks.

• Why is SVN better than VSS? [closed]

  I've heard soooo many people complain about VSS, and noooo people complaining about SVN. We use SVN on my work project. It's slow, regularly freezes up my IDE, and has wonky behavior like looking for a database server every time I right-click the Solution node in my Solution Explorer. When I used VSS, everything worked beautifully, except for access restrictions which I of course blame on the people who control access. VSS is built by Microsoft and thus has great integration with Visual Studio. SVN is written by pretty much anybody with some free time (right?) and thus kinda works most of the time... And I honestly get the impression they had a dozen different directions in the design instead of one. So why do I keep hearing that SVN is better than VSS?

• Firewall will not play ball

  I'm running SQL Server 2008 Express on a windows 2012... or at least I'm trying to :) My problem is that I have opened the ports I thought I needed but still I cant manage to connect to the database from Visual Studio. As proof I have a screenshot of my firewall settings: Everything works fine if I turn the firewall off, but who wants that while connected to the internet? So I wonder what the heck is wrong? • How to attach a sample grabber to the playcap sdk sample

  I want to get access to a webcam's frame image data so I can composite it with some other data. The playcap sample in the windows sdk directshow folder can show you a window streaming the webcam, but doesn't demonstrate access to the bytes. Someone mentioned that I could use a samplegrabber filter attached to a null rendered to gain access to the frame data. Unfortunately I haven't the first clue how to do this. How can I modify the playcap sample to attach a sample grabber and access the frame bytes? visual studio 2008 c++

• Stopping Windows Mobile 6.5 tab reordering

  I have a C++ Visual Studio 2008 Windows Mobile 6.5 application that uses a tab control. I've noticed that depending on how careful you are with the stylus, when using the tab control you can accidentally re-order the tabs. It's difficult to do deliberately, but it's very easy to do when you're not trying. I assume this is a new "feature" of Windows Mobile 6.5 as it doesn't happen in Windows Mobile 6.1 with the same code. Is there a window style or something I can set that will lock the tab order such that people don't accidentally re-arrange them? Also, is there an MSDN page that describes this behavior and how it is supposed to work? I've looked, but have come up empty. Thanks, PaulH

• .NET interop COM DLL behaves differently in VB6 debugger

  I have a .NET v2.0 Dll that exposes a few classes to COM. The assembly is called BLogic.DLL I'm calling these classes from a legacy visual basic 6.0 application. I can generate and EXE file and if I have Blogic.dll in the same folder as the EXE, the program runs without a hitch. However If I try and launch the same program within the VB6 debugger I get a: Automation Error The system cannot find the file specified I assume when I'm running in the debugger, the PLogic.dll file can't be found. I tried putting it in the System32 folder, and the same folder as the VB6.EXE file, but I still get the same error. Other facts that may help: PLogic.dll is NOT a strongly-named assembly. It depends on a 3rd party reference that isn't strongly signed so VS doesn't let me strongly sign it. However the 3rd party functionality isn't being called by the VB6 code, and it is not ComVisible.

  Now that C++ development has become second nature to me, do I have to start from scratch with C#? Since the beginning of Visual Studio, there has been easy way to describe the shape of a Dialog (now called a Form) in the resource file and then use a wizard to create the corresponding C++ code. I kind of remember that in MFC it was pretty much a no-brainer to create a custom dialog with all the components you want and then all the associated code. If I have a C# app that has many forms that I want to bring to the screen based on the user's menu selections, how do I create a class associated with a windows form?

• ASP.Net Web Site Project - Errors Not Caught at Compile time

  For the first time in my career, I'm working on an ASP.Net (v3.5) project that has been set up as a Visual Studio 2008/10 Web Site Project. I'm not keen on this way of working this way for various reasons but for the moment and until such time as the company sees the virtue in working in an environment with namespaces, designer and project files etc., I have to continue with the existing codebase. I've run into some odd issues since I began this but perhaps the oddest one of all is that althought VS lets me build the code, it doesn't reliably pick up compilation errors so these are not noticed until runtime. I know the website model allows dynamic/hot compilation when a request is made for a specific but I can't see why it wouldn't do this when I manually (F5) build/rebuild the project. Its immensely annoying as you can imagine and I can't find a workaround. Could any StackOverflow person help with suome suggestions to make things better?

The case is, now my friend lost the access to program (something that the developers say "locked to machine" so when moved to another pc, he lost the access to program and data.   I use the tab key to indent my python code in Vim, but whenever I copy and paste a block Vim replaces every tab with 4 spaces, which raises an IndentationError I tried setting :set paste as suggested in related questions but it makes no difference Other sites suggest pasting 'tabless' code and using the visual editor to re-indent, but this is asking for trouble when it comes to large blocks Are there any settings I can apply to vim to maintain tabs on copy/paste? • Automatically generate buddy classes from model in C#

  I use Linq to Sql (although this is equally applicable in Entity Framework) for my models, and I'm finding myself creating buddy classes for my models all the time. I find this time consuming and repetitive. Is there an easy way to automatically generate these buddy classes based on the models? Perhaps a visual studio macro?   Let's suppose you're an IT student with a basic knowledge of C++ and C#. Let's suppose that you want to design apps that: need to deliver some performance like archivers, cryptographic algorithms, codecs make use of some system calls have a gui and you want to learn an Api that will enable you to write apps like those described earlier and: is mainstream is future proof entitles you to find a decent job is easy enough - I mean easy like VCL, not easy like winapi So, making these assumptions, what Api will you choose? MFC, WPF, other? I really like VCL and QT, but they're not mainstream and I think few employers will want you to write apps in QT or Visual C++ Builder... Thanks for answers.

• Switching to Linux for Windows development, bad idea?

  I was contemplating switching to Linux for C++ development, coming from a Windows environment. Is this a bad idea? My workplace uses Windows and Visual Studio for our projects (some C# and java too, but right now I'm only developing in C++). If they decide to put me on a C# project, would development still possible (mono?)? What are the difficulties in this sort of transition? Would I have a problem working on their projects and vice versa? I read somewhere that there'd be problems with precompiled headers and such (we do use them), and encodings (tabs/spaces, line endings, etc).. If it's not too hard to do this switch, how do I get started? IDE? vim+make? Thanks. By the way, we make MOSTLY windows software.. EDIT: Thanks guys, I guess that makes sense..

  I have created a feature, a publishing site, in Visual Studio to MOSS - this feature contains a masterpage, some page-templates, some site columns (grouped to match each page-template) and som custom list templates etc. I have also created a site collection, some sites and pages based on my feature. Now I have upgraded the code in my feature - I wanted a ListInstance to be created based on my custom list template. When I have upgraded my SharePoint (using WSPBuilder), the ListInstance and default data are visible if I create a new site collection, but existing site collection does not get the ListInstance and data. Is there anything I can do to update existing site collections to contain the ListInstance when upgrading?

• Custom date time picker for Windows Forms that is locked to GMT time

  Using Visual Studio 2008, c#, .net 2.0. I have a Windows Forms client application that contains a scheduling UI section, currently this is housed only in the London office with the standard datetime picker control, the selected time is saved in a UK database (GMT) and a London based server aapplication processes the schedules. There is a requirement to roll the client out to various global locations, Hong Kong, New York etc and allow them to setup schedules that run according to GMT time on the London server. I'll have a label on screen saying "note schedules are GMT" what I need is a good way to present a datetime picker that always shows and is in sync with the database server's GMT time regardless of where the client app is running globally. Suggestions on how to acheive this? thanks.

  I have a Visual Studio 2008 solution that's currently consisting of three projects: A DataFactory project for Business Logic/Data Access. A Web project consisting of the actual user interface, pages, controls, etc. A Web.Core project consisting of utility classes, etc. The application requires consuming a web service. Normally I'd add the service reference to the Web project, but I'm not sure if this is best practice or not. The following options are open to me: Add the reference to the Web project. Add the reference to the Web.Core project, and create a wrapper method that Web will call to consume the web service. Add a new project called Web.Services, and copy step 2. This project is expected to increase in size so I'm open to any suggestions.

• getting detailed information about structured exceptions

  My Visual C++ application is compiled with /EHA option, letting me catch structured exceptions (division by zero, access violation, etc). I then translate those exceptions to my own exception class using _set_se_translator(). My goal is to improve our logging of those types of exceptions. I can get the type of exception from the EXCEPTION_RECORD structure, and the exception address. I would like to be able to gather more information, like the source file/location where the exception is thrown, the call stack, etc. Is that possible? I do create an exception minidump on structured exceptions - is there a tool to automatically get the call stack from that?

  dears, when try to publish my mroject I get this error: Error 3 Task failed because "AL.exe" was not found, or the correct Microsoft Windows SDK is not installed. The task is looking for "AL.exe" in the "bin" subdirectory beneath the location specified in the InstallationFolder value of the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A. You may be able to solve the problem by doing one of the following: 1) Install the Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5. 2) Install Visual Studio 2008. 3) Manually set the above registry key to the correct location. 4) Pass the correct location into the "ToolPath" parameter of the task.

I've linked the sub-report to dataset and dataset has one table call image and it contain column system.byte[]. main report link to another dataset . main report has parameters and sub report has only image field. but when run main report display data but sub report don't display. no error message. sub report dataset not pass data to report. anyone have any idea what might be causing the sub-reports to not work??
