• How to reduce noise in Skype?

  According to Alsamixer I do have a HDA Intel soundcard with Nvidia MCP77/78 HDMI chip (Realtek sound card on MSI notebook). When I use Skype under Ubuntu 12.04 for video calls, the other side hears background noise such as in Windows when you have your microphone boosted. In fact they can hear everything, even the fans turning on. There is nothing tweaked on Ubuntu's fresh installation. Also tried this site: https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/alsa-daily/+packages , but there are no *.deb files that I can test if any fix the problem. The question is if there is a way to add/tweak something to enable on software level the noise cancellation like the Windows sound drivers have that option. I use my build in mic.

• Unable to Install Guard

  I've seen Guard and it's usefulness in web development and would like to install it. Naturally, I expected to be able to use sudo gem install guard to do so (yes, it is a Ruby Gem). However the installation errors out. Here is what I'm getting: Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing guard: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. /usr/bin/ruby1.9.1 extconf.rb /usr/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require': cannot load such file -- mkmf (LoadError) from /usr/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require' from extconf.rb:4:in `<main>' Gem files will remain installed in /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/ffi-1.9.3 for inspection.   We are planning to build a Web Based School/College ERP. The main problem we face is Hardware support. Since it is Web Based, it is not possible to implement Biometrics. But most of our clients do ask for Biometrics. I hope we need to use a desktop application to do that. Can you please give some suggestions for this? Another thing is, here we don't have stable internet connection. We frequently face disconnection. This is another problem for Web Based CRM. In HTML5 there is a feature called Offline storage. Is it possible to use this feature for such dynamic ERP? For example, let's say we need to enter marks for the students. Net got disconnected. Is it possible to use HTML5 offline feature to save the marks offline and upload them when we got connection back?

I have set content directory: Content.RootDirectory = "Assets"; Also the file btnPlay.png has properties set: Build Action: Content and Copy to Output directory: Copy if newer.   I am using alestic.com ec2 Ubuntu instances now for some time and never had a problem with. Today I created a new Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise EBS boot on US-east-1, seems to be a bad build. While doing a sudo apt-get update it breaks and says: W: Failed to fetch bzip2:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_main_source_Sources Hash Sum mismatch This is on a fresh instance. So I recon something went wrong when creating it. What can be done to fix it?

• How would I go about implementing a globe-like "ballish" map?

  I am new to 3D development and I have this idea of having the game world like our globe is - a ball. So, there would be no corners in the map and the game is top-down RTS game. I would like the camera to go on and on and never stop even though you are moving the camera to the same direction all the time. I am not sure if this is even possible, but I would really like to build a globe-like map without borders. Can this be done, and how exactly? I am using XNA, C#, and DirectX. Any tutorials or links or help is greatly appreciated!

  I have installed Vmware Player 6.0.3 build-1895310. The problem I have is that when I run a Windows 7 Vm, it says that 3D support was disabled. (I can't read the exact report atm because it has a chance of crashing my machine.) I have the 3D support box enabled. Here is my graphics card: Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset x86/MMX/SSE2. Can anyone tell me to install drivers or something? I can't find mine anywhere!

(i will use a video hosting platform with api like fliqz.com) I must manage a big user system.. where users can create their own "sub-users"... the site must manage paid subscriptions and payments through paypal.. and other payment gateways... So the question is.. i have to use a pre-built CMS and extend it.. or just a good framework? I've been thinking about joomla, drupal and expressionengine... It's not neccesary to use a open source cms... I've looking at drupal.. but is not as easy to understand and extend... Can anyone help me to make a good decision?

• Mouse wheel on Dell Vostro V13

  I have a Dell Vostro V13, which Canonical claim is "Certified" for Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/make/Dell/laptops). So it surprises me that the synaptics trackpad isn't recognised as such and defaults to psmouse emulation. This means no multitouch, no gestures, and more importantly, no mousewheel scrolling. Because it's not loading the synaptic driver, running gpointing-device-settings doesn't help. I've found this bug : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/380126 which suggests a fix has been committed, but I can't see a way of getting this loaded on my Maverick build. I've tried backports and proposed repos in synaptic, but no joy. Any ideas?

  Which languages have compilers able to emit plain standard C/C++ code? For a start: Haxe // uses Boehm GC Haskell (JHC) Haskell (old GHC) // -fvia-c, removed recently (emitted code is super ugly) Clay ATS Cython RPython (Shed Skin) // experimental RPython (PyPy) Python (Nuitka) // although author claims there are no speedups Common Lisp (ECL) COBOL (OpenCobol) Scheme (Chicken) APL // So far I've not found working implementation available for free download Ur/Web // GCC-specific output, and intended to be used only for web developments (included for completeness only) I'd like to build comprehensive up-to-date list but found only these ones so far. I've tested only Haxe and it works pretty well and quite fast. What about other ones? What is your expirience? How much ugly is generated code? Update. Any language chains (e.g. X - Scheme - C) will be perfectly OK as answer if its use is practical enough and suited for production use.

  I'm currently trying to make a case for adopting dependency management for builds (ala Maven, Ivy, NuGet) and creating an internal repository for shared modules, of which we have over a dozen enterprise wide. What are the primary selling points of this build technique? The ones I have so far: Eases the process of distributing and importing shared modules, especially version upgrades. Requires the dependencies of shared modules to be precisely documented. Removes shared modules from source control, speeding and simplifying checkouts/check ins (when you have applications with 20+ libraries this is a real factor). Allows more control or awareness of what third party libs are used in your organization. Are there any selling points that I'm missing? Are there any studies or articles giving improvement metrics?

I am using Joomla but can switch to any CMS, or try to build an extension myself. The problem is I dont know where to look for example code, or what to look for. To me it doesnt seem like too difficult a process. Also, the code must be out there, with a little tweaking I can probably use someone elses, but I dont even know what to search for.

• How should I expand Jenkins to help me release? [closed]

  Pushing new Sparkle releases of our internal apps is a pain. I have to make the build, make the release notes file, sign the .zip with the private key, and add a new entry to the appcast file tying everything together. I'd love it if Jenkins could help: use the commit messages for the release notes, and automatically do the rest of it. Should I be looking at writing a new Jenkins plugin, or using shell scripting, or is there something already that will do what I want? (A quick Google didn't find anything.)

• IoC containers and service locator pattern

  I am trying to get an understanding of Inversion of Control and the dos and donts of this. Of all the articles I read, there is one by Mark Seemann (which is widely linked to in SO) which strongly asks folks not to use the service locator pattern. Then somewhere along the way, I came across this article by Ken where he helps us build our own IoC. I noticed that is is nothing but an implementation of service locator pattern. Questions: Is my observation correct that this implementation is the service locator pattern? If the answer to 1. is yes, then Do all IoC containers (like Autofac) use the service locator pattern? If the answer to 1. is no, then why is this differen? Is there any other pattern (other than DI) for inversion of control?
