• Artificial Intelligence implemented in x86 Assembly? [closed]

  Okay, so I decided that for my upcoming operating system, I do basically everything in x86 Assembly, using only 16-bit mode. I will need to write the software to host on it once I have something up and going, and I'll definitely post the source and VM-executable file. But as for now I'm stuck with the idea of implementing the AI code for some of the games I'm making to host on it. AI in Assembly is tedious, and sometimes almost impossible seeming, especially complex AI(I'm talking SNES Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island AI here, by the way, not pong AI). I was thinking that it'd be such a hassle that I'd have to bring a higher-level language to work some of this out here, like maybe C++ or C#, but I'd have to go through more work linking it into a fine binary that my OS will host, and that adds unnecessary work to the table I wanted to avoid(I don't want a complex system, I want everything as bare-bones as possible, avoiding libraries, APIs, and linkable formats for now, to make everything more directly accessible to the kernel's API).

• Best way to address this Magento issue

  I am in need of some advice/pointers on how best to attack a problem I am faced with in Magento 1.4.0.1. Here is the scenario: Consider a product catalog of multiple thousands of products in which there are many and various retail markup percentages. There is a need to sell some of those products to other retailers, and I need a way to easily categorise them into percentrage markup groups, so that the other traders can easily purchase items from us without needing to call and confirm pricing. All products prices are added to the magento database including VAT - so the actual retail value is the starting point. I think this needs to be done by adding an attribute on the products that determines the maximum discount level that can be applied to any given product. Obviously, this would entail a massive amount of work to update every product. Is there a way to achieve what we need that I don't yet know about (within Magento)? Can single attribute values be mass-populated somehow, without affecting other attributes such as name/description/etc?

• Where can you find your first customers as a freelancer?

  I want to start doing freelance work, but no matter how I look at it, it seems like the best way to get customers and to have work most of the time, you have to already be in the freelancing game. Most freelancers I've talked to have had the same customers over the years or got new customers because their satisfied clients referred them. What I'd like to know from the successful people here that work as freelancers is how do you start doing business when you haven't yet set foot in freelancing? I want to start small, creating websites that won't require me to hire other people other than maybe a designer I already know. (I'd like to create desktop applications as well, but I think I should keep that for later when I'm more experienced) . I thought about localized Google ads or visiting companies and meeting the people in charge there, but I wouldn't know which kind of businesses to look for or if it's even a good way to approach this. • Building a distributed system on Amazon Web Services

  Would simply using AWS to build an application make this application a distributed system? For example if someone uses RDS for the database server, EC2 for the application itself and S3 for hosting user uploaded media, does that make it a distributed system? If not, then what should it be called and what is this application lacking for it to be distributed? Update Here is my take on the application to clarify my approach to building the system: The application I'm building is a social game for Facebook. I developed the application locally on a LAMP stack using Symfony2. For production I used an a single EC2 Micro instance for hosting the app itself, RDS for hosting my database, S3 for the user uploaded files and CloudFront for hosting static content. • Recover files from NTFS drive with bad sectors

  A few nights ago I have created a backup of my data on an external 500 GB NTFS USB hard drive. I have then formatted my computer, reinstalled Ubuntu and started transferring back the data from the external HDD. Unfortunately some files have became corrupted and Ubuntu is unable to copy them over. The same issue happens if I login using Windows 7. Disk Utility detects with SMART that there are "a few bad sectors". Some of files are perfectly intact, but other files cannot be accessed (nor read, copied...) although they are displayed within nautilus and show the correct file size. Is there anything I can do to recover this data? I have thought of using TestDisk but this utility seems more useful for repairing lost partitions or deleted files. I have also thought of using ddrescue so I could at least have a low level copy of the disk but I am not sure what use to make of it in order to recover the data!!!

Written a lot of code in VB.NET / cobol / simple php e.t.c surely does not help much into the OOP world... • Video capture Performance

  I have noticed high CPU utilization in a number of applications (except mplayer) which read from the embedded webcam on my laptop. Bizarrely CPU utilization varies proportionately to the level of illumination present. I know that that high CPU usage has nothing to do with rendering the video, as I have written a simple app using the OpenCV library to simply grab frames from the webcam, and cpu usage is still high. I think that mplayer might be using my GPU (and the other apps aren't), but since its not an issue with rendering, I dont think this explains anything. Cheese Low light --- ~12% CPU Bright Light ---- ~63% CPU Camorama Low light --- ~7% CPU Bright Light ---- ~30% CPU Opencv C++ library, (display in a single highgui window) Low light --- ~13% CPU Bright Light ---- ~40% CPU (same test on windows 7, 4-9%) Mplayer No problem, 1-2% regardless of light levels Note: If all I want't to do is capture a feed from my webcam I would use mplayer and forget about it, but I'm developing an application which uses the OpenCV to capture a video feed among other things, performance is important.

• CD/DVD drive not mounted when inserted with Disc of any kind

  I just noticed that if a insert a CD or a DVD of any kind, the Drive will start spinning but it will not show the mounted disc. Before it used to ask me what to do with the media inserted. Now it doesn't even do that. I ran in the terminal this code: eject -n and it displays this: " eject: device is `/dev/sr0'" what can I do to get the functionality back on my drive. also ran this command: sudo mount -o ro,unhide,uid=1000 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom but in return i get this: " mount: mount point /mnt/cdrom does not exist" Running Ubuntu 11.10 HERE IS THE HISTORY UNTIL NOW thanks Waltinator: I ran the 'dmesg' but don't know what I'm looking for. Im a newbie on this. The same thing with the 'ls -rlt /var/log' command. • Google analytics goal funnel visualization issues

  This is the goal funnel for checkout. Does anyone have any idea where the "/" is coming from? The cart page is at site: game on glove dot com (I don't want this stackoverflow page being indexed in google particularly well). Go to the site, click on the order button, make your selection, and click the button to enter the cart (it resolves to /Cart and /Shop-Cart). I believe I used the regular expression matching to match "cart". So why the "/" (I don't know what is causing the home page to reload when users are on the Cart page within a Colorbox lightbox where the only way back to home or "/" is to hit the exit button in the top right of the lightbox)? Here's my one guess for the former question but it doesn't seem likely: See the "check out with paypal" button? If you hovered over it, it does default to the home page which is what might be the "/"... but it really redirects the user to the paypal.com page so it shouldn't also load the home page.

  I created a registration db/web application in C# for some workshops. The organization requesting is hosted on a DotNetNuke server. What changes do I need to make to the web.config so it can run under the site. Currently when I try to go to a page it get an error: Server Error in '/' Application. Configuration Error Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately. Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.
