• TCP dies on a Linux laptop

  Once in several days I have the following problem. My laptop (Debian GNU/Linux testing) suddenly becomes unable to work with TCP connections to the internet. The following things continue to work fine: UDP (DNS), ICMP (ping) — I get instant response TCP connections to other machines in the local network (e.g. I can ssh to a neighbour laptop) everything is ok for other machines in my LAN But when I try TCP connections from my laptop, they time out (no response to SYN packets). The only thing that helps is reboot. Clearly something is wrong with my system (everything else works fine), but I have no idea what exactly. I don't know how to reproduce this, but as I said, it happens every several days. My setup is a wireless router that is connected to the ISP via PPPoE. Any advice?

• Catch headset pause/play keypresses in Windows

  I have a new Ultrabook which has single audio jack for input and output instead for separate 3.5 mm jacks we used to have on older machines. The jack is probably similar to American Audio Jack specification or like the one found on Macbook Pro. I have tried to use it with the Apple, HTC, Nokia earphones which ship with most of the smartphones. Microphone on the headset works the way it should. Thing is that the headsets also come with remote controls to control volume and playback. I am sure that those key presses are sent to the Windows. I was hoping to catch those events and bind those to actual media keys so that I can control music playback. I guess this happens on Macs. I want to do the similar thing on the Windows. I'm just not sure where I can catch the events. Driver level? Application level?

• RocketRaid gives me stuttering computer

  I have a SANS DIGITAL TowerRAID TR8M-BP (with the RocketRaid 622 raid device) with 5 x SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s harddrives in a raid 5. It connects via 2-esata cables. My drivers are up to date. When I'm writing data to the drives my computer stutters (meaning freezes for a 1/2 second every 2 seconds or so). My screen freezes, my music goes into a loop, its really annoying. I get the same thing in windows 7 as I do in linux. The only difference is it seems to happen less in linux, but occassionally linux will crash (I've never had linux crash for any other reason, so I'm assuming they have poor linux drivers and kernal mod). Any tips for how to deal with this? Thanks

• How to make Firefox file associations consistent with Ubuntu file associations?

The gist of what I want to accomplish is to have Firefox understand the file associations I download without me having to manually map all of them myself. Gnome knows the file extensions, so I would have expected that Firefox could just use the already-known file mappings there to open the right stuff (as I presume Chrome does). But it doesn't. At least not for me, using Firefox 4, and not by default. When I click on a downloaded file right now, Firefox always has to ask me what application should be used to open the file. A handful of Google results tell me that I can reassociate my file extensions by deleting ~/.mozilla/firefox/[profile name]/mimeTypes.rdf, but while deleting that file does in fact result in a new mimeTypes file being generated, the new mimeTypes is just as barren as the old one had been. Based on the amount of unanswered Qs on the Googlesphere, I know this is a very common problem for Ubuntu users, but it seems to be one for which nobody has chimed in with a good solution. Maybe Superuser can finally be the panacea for us all?

• htaccess hacked - i've deleted code and file - what next?

  My website was hacked recently. I think i've found the code that was added to the htaccess file, deleted it and then added script to prevent the htaccess file being accessed again. I've also deleted the php file that the hacked code refers to (common.php). What do i need to do next? I'm not a programmer or website developer but i really wanted to see if i could fix the problem myself as i've spent quite a few hours trying and don't give up easily. • How to switch easily between a 5.1 headset and 2.1 speakers ?

  I have a 5.1 headset that I mostly use for gaming and watching movies. It is connected using 3 jacks to the rear panel of my motherboard (plus one for the microphone). I also have some small 2.1 speakers that I sometimes use to listen to music or to share a video/movie with someone. For now, what I do is crawl under my desk, and switch the cables. As my motherboard has 7.1 capabilities, I am wondering if there could be a way of having all 4 jack cables always plugged in, and switching on which device to output the sound programmatically. Has anybody had a similar problem, and how did you solve it ?

• How can I make my Super keys (Windows Key) behave more like Ctrl/Alt/Shift in Linux

  After using the Ctrl + "arrow keys" for 13 years to switch virtual desktops in X windows, I've been convinced recently to change to using the Super keys instead (the windows key and the context menu key, which I've remapped). This all works fine for the most part. However, something is still picking up the key events that these keys are sending as if they are a normal alphanumeric like key. For example, I first noticed this in Google Docs spreadsheet that if I press the windows key alone over top of a cell, that it starts editing that cell. It doesn't insert anything, it just sends a key event that Firefox sees and starts editing the cell. This caused problems on a collaborative document I was working on as the way Google docs works, it led to me accidentally erasing the data in a few fields before I realised what was going on. I like using the super keys, but I want them to behave more like a Ctrl or Alt key does in that its a modifier key and doesn't send anything until a second key is pressed. My setup is the following: Ubuntu 10.10 XFCE 4 Microsoft Natural Ergo 4000 keyboard (with the logo scratched out) The following is my .Xmodmap file: remove Lock = Caps_Lock keycode 66 = Escape ! • Remove Pictures Entry from Start Menu

  I want to remove the Pictures item from the topmost section of the Windows-7 Start Menu, but there is no option to do so in the Tasbar and Start Menu Properties dialog. Expected: Actual: There are options to remove the other items (recorded tv, music, videos, etc.), and the option is present in the registry (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartMenu\StartPanel\MyPics\Hide\CheckedValue=dword:0), but it just doesn’t reflect in the Start Menu (Pictures is still shown while the others are removed). Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Could it be a bug? (It's strange that only this one Start Menu item is broken.)

• It's the ethernet 10/100 in LAN transfer faster than USB 1.0?

  I have an old laptop (PIII 800MHz, with 256 RAM) that I wish to use as my home server: it'll have to serve just two people, so I think that I'll be more than ok as for the RAM and the CPU. The issue is about data, because the internal hard disk is a 12GB, that is...ridicolous! I have more than 60GB of mixed storage and counting (images, videos and music) in an external usb hd. I could put the hd in my desktop pc just to serve the big files through ethernet or let it inside its usb box attached to the laptop. The question is: which of these solutions will be the fastest? USB 1.0 attached to the server (laptop) or internal hard disk serving files via 10/100 ethernet to the laptop on demand?

• iPhone Docked Playing Through PC, Buzzing.

  Hi. I have an iPhone that I fit into an Apple dock. There is an audio cable from dock into the line in on my sound card. My headphones are plugged into the line out. I get this really quite buzz that is fairly constant, but changes as the iphone "does stuff". It's not so bad when the music is playing. But when it stops I get the buzz, so I can't really use my headphones as "noise cancellation." It doesn't help to change my volume sliders on the PC. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Extract photo stills from .vob files

  My parents had all the family slides scanned by a photo lab. The lab returned the digital photos on two DVDs as movies; there's some stock music over a slideshow with fades between each photo. The discs contain only a handful of files, including some very large VOB files. I'd like to extract these photos and import them into iPhoto. I saw this answer about capturing stills, and that might work if I can figure out the right offset from the beginning and the right capture rate. But this approach seems very error-prone for this purpose. Is there a better way? I wish the individual photo files were stored in a directory on the discs, but they're not there.

  Hello, I have window 2003 100mbps server, i have tried using php script such as php indexer, zina pancake.org and others. The php script use to serve download such as images and music songs. I personally have 20mbps internet speed. When i use the php script (download pass thru PHP headers) , it will download at constant speed of 30-40KBps. I have tried different webserver such as apache 1.3, apache 2.2, abyss webserver & lighttpd for windows. The speed while relying on php is same constant 30-40KBps however when i tried direct link/straight from apache, the speed is 1MB/s. Is there any settings in Window 2003 Registry or PHP should i change to make the download speed is more faster when going thru PHP?

• Windows 7 Intermittent Connection Issues (Continuously "identifying")

  I have an issue solely with my desktop windows 7 machine on my network (the network has multiple different devices, on the same and different operating systems) and the issue is that irregularly, although sometimes frequently, I briefly get disconnected from the internet (briefly is for around 5-10 seconds). However, I never loose the bars on the wifi thing, eg I don't get the yellow triangle, but it goes to the identifying stage and then reconnects. The reason I noticed the problem was when I was streaming music it would stop and I would refresh the page and it would start working again ( turned out it was because it took that amount of time to get connected again). So my question is, what would cause the intermittent issues and start the "identifying" process again. I don't think its my router, because no one else is having problems, so the other option is that its a problem specifically with my machine. I'm connecting to a Netgear DG834GT router, and I'm using a Edimax Wireless-N150 USB Adapter. Anyone have any ideas?

• In Windows 8.1, how can I configure File History to backup *some* of my SkyDrive folders?

  I want File History to back up all of the folders in my SkyDrive except for the media folders (Music, Pictures, Videos, Podcasts). My media folders are "available online only", the rest of "available offline". Right now File History does not back up any of the content in my SkyDrive, and I can't seem to find a way to configure which folders it backs up. I found some sources that say if my SkyDrive is available offline, it will be added to File History. But I don't want to make my entire SkyDrive available offline, just the non-media folders.

• OS X Application icons missing after filesystem tampering

  A while back I installed some Google software, I forget what it was, but it was something that attached itself to Google Chrome and was un-uninstallable short of uninstalling all of Chrome. It was a total pain in the a$$. Anyways, I was trying to put up a fight before going nuclear and just wiping Chrome, and during that fight, something went wrong (i.e., I didn't know what I was doing). I remember messing around with the Applications folder somehow. I don't remember what exactly I did, but it perhaps involved some interchanging between the /Applications and /User/Username/Applications folders? Definitely some tampering in those areas, I'm sure at least about that. Anyways, I've since updated and restarted my computer. Now, while all my apps work fine, many of them have blank icons - not on the Dock, those icons are fine, but in Spotlight search results, etc. Currently, my /Applications folder contains only OS X-cooked-in applications. My ~/Applications folder contains cooked in apps AND post-OS/third-party apps. There hasn't been any functionality deficit so far, but I don't like working on a machine where something isn't how it should be. I know my information was vague, but does anyone know what went wrong / how to fix it? OS X Mavericks 10.9.3

• MP4 video - edit audio track

  I have recorded some nice sport videos with mz GoPro HD action camera. I would like to edit the audio track. I dont want to get rid of the whole audio track - just erase small parts (e.g. compression artifacts or me saying some swearwords). When the original audio track is cleansed, Id add another music layer in FCE afterwards. I'd really like to edit the audio like in a WaveLab etc. Any ideas?

• Noisily rendered text in Firefox

  It came to me in a week or so that certain pages (Facebook, StrackOverflow, some news sites) have text rendering errors in Firefox. As a workaround if I refresh the page, or simply select and deselect the buggy text, the unpleasant effect disappears. I don't have this effect in Internet Explorer or in any of my desktop applications. Windows 7 Pro 64bit (fresh) Firefox 19.0.2 (fresh) Ati Radeon HD 4600 Series (fresh drivers) Thanks for the help in advance! Update 1/2 I have only three addons: Forecastfox, Hungarian spell checking dictionary and Quick locale switcher. The latter two are installed after the effect appeared. I disabled the first individually and did not helped. But if I start my firefox with disabled addons I cannot reproduce the error. As far as I know this mode does not mean disabled plugins, which I do have (Adobe Acrobat, Citrix ICA Client, Google Earth plugin, Google update, Java Deployment Toolkit 6, MS Office 2010, MS Windows Media Player Firefox, Shockwave Flash, Silverlight, VLC Web). Update 2/2 If I disable all plugins and extensions I still have the problem. If I start Firefox with disabled addons then I cannot reproduce the problem.

  I'm trying to set up an OpenVPN VPN, which will carry some (but not all) traffic from the clients to the internet via the OpenVPN server. My OpenVPN server has a public IP on eth0, and is using tap0 to create a local network, 192.168.2.x. I have a client which connects from local IP 192.168.1.101 and gets VPN IP 192.168.2.3. On the server, I ran: iptables -A INPUT -i tap+ -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i tap+ -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.2.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE On the client, the default remains to route via 192.168.1.1. • How to "paint" the data layer of a CD using a CD drive?

  I am looking for software to "paint" geometric shapes, dots or lines on the data layer of a writable CD (or DVD) using a standard drive. These do not have to be visible to the naked eye; I'd try to abuse the small dot size on the CD for some scientific measurements. I am aware of the "LightScribe" feature of some drives and that is not what I am looking for. Most of the software available is of course limited to write music or data, on does not offer the low-level "place a dot at this radius, this angle"-functionality. Is there something out there for me?

• Why is my Windows XP not allowing me to turn on sounds?

  This started to happen few weeks ago: Every time I start up Windows, the global sound volume is set to muted. I was able to just click the muted button to un-muted and that was fine, until now: Now I cant even click that unmute button! Every time I click the unmute button, I hear a split of a second the music I play, then it stops immediately. It is maybe 10 milliseconds until it mutes it again. In theory I could write a program to click that button continuously, but is there another solution to fix this? Or is this a broken hardware problem and Windows knows it and therefore doesn't allow me to enable sounds or my computer would break apart? Any ideas what could be causing this? A weird virus that's purpose is to piss me off? That weird this whole issue is, really, doesn't make any sense at all.

• Strange zsh autocomplete behaviour.

  Every time I use tab autocompletion with zsh instead of completing the current string, it gives me a new string + options to complete. It's hard to explane, so here is an example. This is what would happen if I type 'ls Nue' and hit tab. [me@mbp:/Volumes/hdd/music]: ls Neu ls Neu Neuraxis/ Neurosis/ Neutral\ Milk\ Hotel/ If I delete the second `ls Nue', I am unable to delete the white space and the first. If I hit return, it is as if I have just entered a blank line. Does anyone know what is going on.

• Windows 7 Desktop as Bluetooth Mixer

  I would like to stream all the audio from my Droid X2 to my desktop running Windows 7 via bluetooth. When I pair the two devices I can make this work but the audio plays through the internal speakers. I am actually wanting to listen to everything through a pair of bluetooth headphones. The end result would be that I could listen to music from my phone but easily pause it to listen to audio from the desktop instead. So far I have not had any luck. I thought about connecting the line out to the line in so I could monitor the line in from my headphones. My current setup is wiring the phone to the line in and then monitoring the line in through the headphones. I'm just wanting to eliminate the wire and go wireless the whole way. Is there something in Windows that prevents it from taking an inbound audio stream and sending it out another device?

• No outbound internet connection after restarting CentOS 6.3

This would be a decent platform for running the DB only, perhaps, but the same server in an "A-A mode" clustering (very simple) also runs Tomcat and there are several Java servlets running on this. Sadly there is no caching platform etc. We only use an external CDN for some html caching. I am personally more familiar with web environments on the LAMPP platform (apache, php, mysql, postgresql). PROBLEM: Because the server has both Tomcat JSP/Java and Oracle 10g running on the same server, with no caching, I have some issues of the server going down. Often, sadly. QUESTION: What are my options in terms of improving performance of all these different apps? Connection Pooling? Example, in Postgresql world we have PgBouncer, which really helps things. Does Oracle have something similar? Or is there a famous Java-based external pooler that people use in production environments? (I'm not familiar with Java) Any "SQL cache" as in the MySQL and Postgresql world? Any other kind of application cache, as "APC" or "eAccelarator" in the PHP world? The "OSCache" stuff from the Java world (JSP thingie I found on Google: http://onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2005/01/05/jspcache.html?page=2) ... What else? Sorry if this is a noob question. I have googled and googled, but problem is I don't know what to google for, other than the broad general concepts above. So if not full answers, I would even appreciate basic pointers and I am happy to JFGI myself. Thanks!
