• How to get gigabit network speeds on Windows XP?

  We've just installed gigabit switches at work, and things on the Linux side are going well. Our linux boxes, which use a Intel Corporation 82566DM-2 Gigabit nic (according to lspci), consistently get over 900 mbits/sec: iperf -c ipserver ------------------------------------------------------------ Client connecting to ipserver, TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 16.0 KByte (default) ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3] local 192.168.40.9 port 39823 connected with 192.168.1.115 port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 1.08 GBytes 929 Mbits/sec We have a bunch of Windows XP 64-bit machines that use Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx cards. I spent around a day trying to get equivalent speeds on them, but couldn't get above 200 Mbits/sec. I noticed the Windows iperf tests said that the TCP window size was 8 Kb by default (as opposed to 16 Kb on Linux, so I modified my test to reflect that. Still no love. I went to Broadcom's site, downloaded the latest drivers for the card and installed. Still no love. However, finally, I tried a 64 Kb window size with the new drivers, and finally an improvement! $ iperf -c ipserver -w64k ------------------------------------------------------------ Client connecting to ipserver, TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 64.0 KByte ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3] local 192.168.40.214 port 1848 connected with 192.168.1.115 port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 933 MBytes 782 Mbits/sec Much better, but still not really taking advantage of the full capabilities of the network. If the Linux box can reach 950 Mbits/sec consistently, this box should be able to as well. Also, if you're wondering about the medium, this is over the same cable...I'm switching back and forth. • Why can't I specify the executable that opens file with extension on windows?

  I am on windows server 2003, but I guess it is the same on windows xp. This is a superuser question, because it is definitly desktop, so do not move or close it. Question: I copied some movable applications (usually people create them for usb sticks) to locations like c:\bin\app1\app1.exe app1.exe can open files of type *.ap1 When I rightclick file.ap1 and choose "open with ..." the "Open with" dialog appears. But it is not working how I expect in this situation. I can choose c:\bin\app1\app1.exe with the "Browse" button, but: app1.exe will not appear in the dialog where I just choosed it in the programs list, like I am used to it after clicking OK on it in the browse dialog. app1.exe will not open it when I click ok in the "Open with" dialog, the application that was assigned until then will still open it What could be the reason? Edit: Additional Information: my account is member of the administrators group I just changed the permissions of the folder c:\bin\app1\ and made sure that the group "Administrators" has all rights. I also inherited this manually to all subfodlers and subfiles.

• C#: Windows Forms: Getting keystrokes in a panel/picturebox?

  I'm making a level editor for a game using windows forms. The form has several drop down menus, text boxes, etc, where the user can type information. I want to make commands like CTRL + V or CTRL + A available for working within the game world itself, not text manipulation. The game world is represented by a PictureBox contained in a Panel. This event handler isn't ever firing: private System.Windows.Forms.Panel canvas; // ... this.canvas = new System.Windows.Forms.Panel(); // ... this.canvas.PreviewKeyDown += new System.Windows.Forms.PreviewKeyDownEventHandler(this.canvas_PreviewKeyDown); What is the preferred way of doing this? Can a panel even receive keyboard input? I would like to allow the user to use copy/paste/select-all commands when working with the text input, but not when placing objects in the game world.

• Error regarding DNS - "... must be able to resolve names ..." (Windows Server 2008 R2 installation)

  I'm trying to replace our old Windows 2000 Server by a Windows Server 2008 R2. I followed the guide at MSDN. Coming to the step "Install Active Directory Domain Services..." the option to install the DNS-Server was grayed-out. According to Microsoft Support I skipped the DNS Server Installation at this point. (Because of the single-label DNS name) I then installed the DNS-Server role and created a forward-lookup-zone for the domain. When running the Best Practices Analyzer of the DNS-Server role I get these two messages for both domain controllers (the old win2k and the new win 2008 R2): The DNS server [IP address] on [adapter name] must be able to resolve names in the primary DNS domain zone The DNS server [IP address] on [adapter name] must be able to resolve names in the forest root domain name zone The TechCenter articles suggest to use a proper DNS Server - that's pointless when I try to configure a proper DNS Server. How do I configure the DNS Server in a way that it resolves these zones? Or are these errors irrelevant? dcdiag /v /test:DNS Seems to run fine...

• How do I ignore the Perl shebang on Windows with Apache 2?

  I have set up a local Perl web environment on my Windows machine. The application I'm working on is originally from a Linux server, and so the shebang for source .pl files look like so: #!/usr/bin/perl This causes the following error on my Windows dev machine: (OS 2)The system cannot find the file specified. Is it possible to change my Apache 2 conf so that the shebang is ignored on my Windows machine? Of course I could set the shebang to #!c:\perl\bin\perl.exe, that much is obvious; but the problem comes to deploying the updated files. Clearly it would be very inconvenient to change this back on each deploy. I am using ActivePerl on Windows 7. Update: I should have mentioned that I need to keep the shebang so that the scripts will work on our shared hosting Linux production server. If I did not have this constraint and I didn't have to use the shebang, the obvious answer would be to just not use it.

• Analyzing Windows crash dumps generated on XP/32 machines with Win7/64 ?

  We have a problem with analyzing our Windows crash-dumps that were created on customer Windows XP/32 boxes on our development machines. Many of our development machines are now Win7/64 boxes, but it appears that the crash-dumps generated under Windows XP cannot full resolve their binary dependency, thereby leading to warnings when displaying the call stacks in Visual Studio (2005). For example, the msvcr80.dll cannot be resolved when loaded from a Win7 machine when the dump was generated on Windows XP: On XP, the WinSxS path appears to be C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4053_x-ww_e6967989\msvcr80.dll -- on Win7, the WinSxS path to the same DLL version seems to be: x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4053_none_d08d7da0442a985d (I got this info from a forum thread on codeguru that link to an msdn article.) Visual Studio (2005) can now no longer correctly resolve the binaries for the crash-dump. How can I get Visual Studio to resolve all the correct binaries for my dump file? Note: I have already correctly set up the symbol server. The public symbols for most system DLLs (kernel32.dll, etc) and our symbols of our own DLLs are correctly loaded. It is just that the symbols of DLLs that reside in the WinSxS folder are not loaded, because it appears that Vista/7 uses a different path scheme for these DLLs than XP does and therefore Visual Studio cannot find the dll (not the pdb) on the local dev machine and so cannot load the corresponding symbols for the dump file.

• How to configure VTK on windows for C++ programming?

  I am new to windows C/C++ programming. I am trying to get a binary program (.exe) to run which needs VTK library. I have installed VTK from http://vtk.org/VTK/resources/software.html on 64-bit windows 7. When I run the binary program, it generates an error in a window saying that "vtkCommon.dll is missing from your computer". Should I add the folder in which VTK has been installed to the windows PATH?

• Why would Windows Task Scheduler spawn multiple instances of the same task that run into each other?

  Overview: I use Windows Task Scheduler to run automated tasks. Occasionally I will see that randomly a task has failed to perform its duties. When I check Task Scheduler to see what has occurred in the history log, I see that for some reason, when the tasks are triggered at their schedules, they are spawning several instances of themselves simultaneously which turns into a train wreck for the task and it either kills the other instances and tries to run the "first" one, or it just does not run at all as it believes another instance of itself is already running. Sometimes this occurs in the same tasks and then occasionally it happens with others. The fix is just to end all instances and start the task manually. Question: Why would one single task with one single schedule decide to spawn multiple instance of itself simultaneously? Note: I've got a separate user account set to run the tasks instead of myself. That user is indeed an admin on the machine that runs the tasks and the tasks are set to tun whether or not the user is logged on. Also, the machine is windows server 08 R2.

In any case throughout the day I notice that my computer makes apparently random device-connect and/or device-disconnect ("boink") sounds. I suppose it is the same sound you hear when connecting or disconnecting a USB device such as a thumb drive. I've noticed that this happens on each of three computers I work with at home, my wife's computer, and my machine at work. It happens without any user action at all - i.e. I'll be just sitting there (hands off my mouse and keyboard), and the computer will make the sound. There is no visual queue or anything. Just the sound. I have sometimes gone in pursuit of the sound - running virus scans, examining event logs and such, and observing task manager - but have never had any luck tracking this thing down, but have not had any luck. Surely someone else out there must be experiencing this, too. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

• How to install IE9 when KB2120976 is not applicable to my Windows 7 x86 Ultimate edition?

  I'm trying to install IE9, visit http://beautyoftheweb.com, download it and then says it's downloading prereqs. After a minute, the installer says there's a problem and directs me to Prerequisites for installing Internet Explorer 9 Beta I click on the x86 installers one by one... most say "already installed".. But http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2120976/ says "The update is not applicable to your computer". Lame. So I try the IE9 install and the go through the whole process again with the same result.   I'd like to show another app's windows under my app's taskbar button. It's a background app that reports another process's windows as my app's own. Is there any universal way to do this, e.g. each "new" window, alert glow, progressmeter, and other taskbar features, show under my own app's button? For example, Winfox runs under its own process and steals Firefox's windows. It also adds features, but that's irrelevant -- I just want to support another app's existing taskbar features under my own app's button -- multiple windows, progressmeter, alert flashing, error flashing, mini-icons, etc. Is there a near-universal way to steal an app, or is it largely app-specific? • How to Load Balance 2 Internet Connections on a Windows 7 machine?

  It's sort of related to this particular question, but that one is on Mac. I am looking for similar solution on Windows 7. I have 2 network connections: (Connection A) Wireless terminal connecting to ISP A (3G / EVDO internet provider) (Connection B) Broadband wired connection connecting to ISP B (Cable internet provider) Both has access to the internet. When I try connecting to a website and checking the networking tab on my Task Manager, I only see the network traffic being routed to only Connection A. Is there a way to make the computer to utilize both network (in a sense using all the bandwidth available from both the Cable ISP and the 3G / EVDO ISP) at the same time? If so, what do I need to do to set this up ... on Windows 7? Here is a bit more info on my network connections (ipconfig /all): PPP adapter Wireless Terminal: IPv4: aa.bb.ccc.ddd(preferred) Subnet mask: 255.255.255.255 Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0 DNS: aa.ee.f.ggg aa.ee.f.hhh Primary Wins: jjj.ii.k.l Secondary Wins: jjj.ii.k.m Ethernet adapter LAN: IPv4: 192.168.1.100 (connected to a router by wired that itself connect to a cable modem) subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.1.1 (the wireless router) DHCP: 192.168.1.1 (the wireless router) DNS: xxx.yy.zz.ww rr.sss.t.uuu For my own privacy, I don't believe the actual number matters, the patterns are representative of the ip numbering scheme...

• Options for small windows network setup without dedicated server?

  I'm very weak on networking and hope someone can point me in the right direction: I have written some windows client/server software which incorporates a database which is located on a windows server. I have a test installation running at a customer's office where the server has a static IP address. In this case its easy for the clients to access the database because of the fixed IP address. Also, customers with network servers generally have specialist support staff to set up my software, so its not such a problem for me. However I also need to offer the software to customers who have small offices with less than 10 PCs and no dedicated network server. In this case I want the customer to be able to nominate one PC as the database "server" and install my software and have the clients access it. But in this situation I believe the "server" PC may not have a dedicated IP address. Q1: What is the best way to set this up simply and make it work? Can I reliably reference the "server" by using its name, or is there a way to assign dummy fixed IP addresses? Ideally this needs to be workable on small networks running a mixture of XP/Vista/Windows7 as my target market may well have mixed OSes etc. I guess this would be akin to home networking? • Can you transfer a Windows 7 XP-mode VHD to a new PC without the need for reactivation?

  Hi. At the moment I am running Vista 32 bit and use VPC 2007 a lot. I have several W2000 VMs set up with complex software configurations. For me, one of the advantages of working with VPCs is that a VM can easily be copied to another PC (like a notebook). Also, when I move to a new PC, I can immediately work with my existing VMs without the need to reinstall all applications. I am thinking about buying a new pc with Windows 7 64 bit pro, and using the xp-mode VM that comes with Windows 7. The advantages would be support for more memory (so being able to run more VM's simultaneously) and having a licenced XP VM. I would like to know if you can transfer a VHD that is based on the xp-mode VHD to another machine without Activation issues. The other machine will of course, also be running W7. I would guess that this would not be a problem. However, I did read about a guy who had to reinstall his W7 because of a harddisk failure, and could not access his xp-mode VHD anymore because it demanded re-activation. Thanks. Henk.

  I have a process I need to run within a batch file. This process produces some output. I need to both display this output to the screen and send (pipe) it to another program. The bash method uses tee: echo 'ee' | tee /dev/tty | foo Is there an equivalent for Windows? I am happy to use PowerShell if necessary. There are tee ports for Windows, but there does not appear to be an equivalent for /dev/tty, which complicates matters. The specific use-case here: I have a program (launch4j) that I need to run, displaying output to the user. At the same time, I need to be able to detect success or failure in the script. Unfortunately, this program does not set an exit code, and I cannot force it to do so. My current workaround involves piping to find, to search the output (launch4j config.xml | find "Successfully created") - however, that swallows the output I need to display. Therefore, I need some way to both display to the screen and send the ouput to a command - and this command should be able to set ERRORLEVEL (it cannot run asynchronously).

• Windows XP: How to delete files and folders that cannot be deleted?

  I have a backup copy of a previous Windows' Documents and Settings folder which only contains my original user and within 2 more directories: Favorites and Local Settings. When I try to delete Local Settings I get this error: When I try to delete Favorites, I get this error: I ran this in a cmd shell: attrib *.* -r -a -s -h /s ...but it did not help, nor did it return any errors/warnings. I used Unlocker v1.8.5 and LockHunter repeatedly at multiple levels to see if any files are in use, but both always say: No Files Locked. Update #1: I was able to rename the directory, which now gives me this warning before (trying to) delete: If I press Yes (or Yes to All) then I get this error: Update #2: I let chkdsk /f run which required a reboot since it's on my primary system partition. During Stage 2 scanning, I received about 40 of these: Deleting an index entry from index $0 of file 25. ...followed by: Deleting index entry cookies in index $I30 of file 37576. ...but I still get the first error dialog above when trying to delete. Update #3: Digging deeper, the 99 is the name of one of many directories located deep in here: C:\Documents and Settings.OLD\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\[email protected]\SharingMetadata\[email protected]\DFSR\Staging\CS{D4E4AE55-B5E2-F03B-5189-6C4DA6E41788}\ Inside each of those directories were files with names such as: 2300-{C93D01AC-0739-4FD9-88C7-13D2F21A208E}-v2300-{C93D01AC-0739-4FD9-88C7-13D2F21A208E}-v2300-Downloaded.frx I noticed that, unlike all the directories, I couldn't rename any of these files. I also noticed that the file + dir names were extremely long: Original directory = 194 characters Filenames = 100+ characters Together the length exceeds the 255-char limit which is bad and would explain the error message I posted in Update #1. Partial Solution: Rename all directories until the total path length is less than 100. Afterwards I was able to rename the .frx files, not to mention delete everything inside the Local Settings directory. This is only a partial solution because this (empty) directory is still undeleteable: C:\1\2\Favorites\Wien\What To Do.. I'm guessing because of the ".." at the end, Windows (Explorer and cmd) can't deal with it: Here is what Explorer properties shows: Any ideas?

• How can I associate html/htm files with Chrome in Windows 7 64 bit?

  I want Chrome to open all .html files. It is currently set as my default browser, however html files open in IE9. When I go to Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations I see that .html and .htm files are associated with IE. When I choose to change the default program it I'm presented with a list of programs but Chrome is not one of them. I browse to, and then select the Chrome.exe (C:\Users\Matt\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe) but it goes right back to IE. This is the first time I've seen anything like this. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. I never had this problem on Windows 7 32 bit. Is this because Chrome by default installs in the User directory, not the Program Files directory? How can I fix these file associations? EDIT: It's not that things are reverting back to IE after associating them with Chrome. When I browse to Chrome in the file association window, and select it, it doesn't seem to take. It doesn't show Chrome in the list of programs despite pointing to the Chrome.exe location. I really think this has something to do with the fact that it doesn't install into the Program File Directory.

Host: Ubuntu Desktop Edition 10.04 (I know, again, not my choice) running VMware Zimbra 8GB of RAM On-board RAID1 of two 320GB Seagate Barracuda drives for the OS Software RAID5 of four 500GB WD Caviar Black drives on MDADM for bulk storage (sorry, I don't know the model #) A relatively competent quad-core Intel Core i7 CPU from the Nehalem architecture (not suspicious of this as the bottleneck) Guest: Windows Small Business Server 2011 4GB of RAM Host-equivalent CPU allocation VDI file for OS hosted on the on-board RAID, VDI file for storage hosted on the on-board RAID For some reason when running, the VM locks up when sitting nearly idle, and the VirtualBox process reports values of 240%+ in top (how is that even possible?!). Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I'm totally stumped on this one. Happy to provide whatever logs you'd like to take a look at. Ideally I'd drop VirtualBox and provision this with VMware Workstation, but the client has objected to the (very nominal) costs involved. If hardware needs to be purchased to help, it will be, but we're considering upgrades a last-resort at this time. Thanks in advance! *fingers crossed*

• Is there a way in Windows 7 to disable "journaling"?

  C:\$extend\$Usn.Jrnl:$J:$data Here is a picture finally. The large strip in the center of the top band is the largest chunk, in the other, grey areas are the various clusters with it. On the right, the big long grey line is $logfile (not paging), and it is 63&nbsb;MB. Paging, 500&nbsb;MB is the dark cyan chunk, next to the yellow MFTres in the inner rings.. The disk was defragged so they could be seen easier. Not all clusters of this type of file are tagged, but the idea is there. The disk is 4k clusters, now about 12 GB size. Each cute little block in the picture is .81 MB and represents 207 clusters. The dkGreen section, is mostly the whole Winsxs pile, also interesting when they keep telling us it doesn't take much disk space. Wikipedia suggests that in previous NT systems "USN journaling" would be turned on when enabled (assumes it could also be turned off?). What aspects, services, or program is working on putting that stuff all over the disk which is known by $jrnl$ type clusters, even if it is not actual USN journaling? Is it possible in a Windows 7 system to completly disable the journaling, and what would be the ramifications of that? On a Windows XP NTFS system, I do not recall seeing the quantity of disk clusters used with these $jrnl$ names, so I do not recall this being necessary in this quantity for an NTFS file system itself? I understand that it would not be there, if it did not have a useful function :-) Information about how wonderful is fine, if that information will help track down what parts of the system create and use it. • Can't ping guest OS from Windows XP SP3 host running VIC.

  Hi, I am running VMware ESX Server 3i Version 3.5.0 and accessing this server using VMware Infrastructure Client Version 2.5.0 on a Windows XP SP3 machine. I have enabled the Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 stack and assigned an IPv6 address (using the netsh command) to the network adapter. The guest OS'es running on ESX Server (includes Win7, W2K8, WinXP) also have IPv6 addresses enabled on their adapters. The adapters are configured to be in VM Network (Bridged mode) and hence have connectivity to the Internet. The VMs are able to ping each other using IPv6 addresses and are also able to ping a physical Win7 machine using IPv6 addresses. However, the Windows XP SP3 machine on which the Client is running is not able to ping any hosts running on ESX Server while the VMs are able to ping this host. Whenever I try to ping from WXP box I get the "Invalid source route specified." error. The WinXP machine is not able to ping the Win7 physical machine too (the same error as above is thrown). Can someone help me understand why I am receiving this error and what I need to do to resolve this error? Thanks, Vittal
