  • Would it be simply better to use the system's functions rather than use the language?

    - by Nullw0rm
There are many scenarios where I've questioned PHP's performance with some of its functions, and whether I should build a complex class to handle specific things using its seemingly slow tools. For example, Complex regular expressions with sed and processing with awk would seemingly be exponential in performance rather than making PHP's regular expression and seemingly excessive functions parse and in time manage to finish it. If I were to do a lot of network tasks such as MX lookups/DIGging/retrieving simultaneously I would rather pass it via system() and let the OS handle it itself. There are simply too many functions in PHP, that are inefficient and result in slow pages or can be handled easier by the OS. What are your opinions? Do you think I should do the hard work with the OS in its own/custom functions?

  • How do I find the current virtual terminal

    - by camh
I am working around a problem in Ubuntu 10.04 where after resume, the mouse cursor disappears. This can be "fixed" by running chvt 1; chvt 7 in a script in /etc/pm/sleep.d, such that those commands run on thaw and resume. However, the X console is not always vt #7, so chvt 7 is wrong in those cases. What I would like to do is find out the current vt in the fix-up script and make sure I change back to that vt. How can I find the current vt? (tty(1) just reports "not a tty")

    - by YumYumYum
I am trying to write an TUI bandwidth trace application which on query can instantly tell me, that my download and upload speed is XXXX. I have figured out that download i can use with wget and parse it using BASH, but how do i get the upload speed? Example of download parse method: 1) Remote download : wget http://x.x.com:7007/files/software/vnc.zip Length: 1594344 (1.5M) [application/zip] Saving to: `vnc.zip' 100%[==================================================================>] 1,594,344 573K/s in 2.7s 2012-03-24 11:35:22 (573 KB/s) - `vnc.zip' saved [1594344/1594344] 2) Local download tells Length: 1594344 (1.5M) [application/zip] Saving to: `vnc.zip' 100%[==================================================================>] 1,594,344 --.-K/s in 0.1s 2012-03-24 06:43:04 (11.4 MB/s) - `vnc.zip' saved [1594344/1594344]

  • recv receiving not whole data sometime

    - by milo
hi all, i have following issue: here is the chunk of code: void get_all_buf(int sock, std::string & inStr) { int n = 1; char c; char temp[1024*1024]; bzero(temp, sizeof(temp)); n = recv(sock, temp, sizeof(temp), 0); inStr = temp; }; but sometimes recv returning not whole data (data length always less then sizeof(temp)), only it's part. write side always sends me whole data (i got it with sniffer). what matter? thx. P.S. i know, good manner suggests me to check n (if (n < 0) perror ("error while receiving data), but it doesn't matter now - it's not reason of my problem. P.S.2 i've forgot - it's blocking socket.

  • Ubuntu option vanishes after setting up windows XP(?) [closed]

    - by Ravi
I have installed both windows XP as well as Ubuntu 9.04 on my machine.I can choose between them using dual boot option at the startup.Up to this, it is fine. But unfortunately when my XP crashes, I need to install XP again. But when I do it,after installing XP successfully, dual boot option no longer appears at the startup. So the Ubuntu goes in vein. What is the problem here? How do I solve it?

  • inode_operations , warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type

    - by djTeller
Hi everyone, I'm trying to compile a simple Kernel program that read and write from a proc file. I'm trying to set permission to that file by overriding the permission fp in inode_operations struct (.permission) static int module_permission(struct inode *inode, int op, struct nameidata *foo) { . . . } static struct inode_operations Inode_Ops_4_Our_Proc_File = { .permission = module_permission, /* check for permissions */ }; Our_Proc_File->proc_iops = &Inode_Ops_4_Our_Proc_File; For some reason, when I compile this i get - warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type on the following line: .permission = module_permission, /* check for permissions */ Any idea how to solve this? Thanks!

  • Create File Speedily From Individual Column

    - by neversaint
    I have a data that looks like this: -1 1:-0.394668 2:-0.794872 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:0.9365 6:0.75597 1 1:-0.463641 2:-0.897436 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:0.44378 6:0.121824 1 1:-0.469432 2:-0.897436 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:0.32668 6:0.302529 -1 1:-0.241547 2:-0.538462 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:0.9994 6:0.987166 1 1:-0.757233 2:-0.948718 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:-0.33904 6:0.915401 1 1:-0.167147 2:-0.589744 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:0.95078 6:0.991566 The first column is class, and next 6 columns are features. I want to create 6 files for individual features. For example feat1_file.txt will contain -1 1:-0.394668 1 1:-0.463641 ... 1 1:-0.757233 1 1:-0.167147 feat2_file.txt will contain -1 2:-0.794872 ... 1 2:-0.589744 and so on. I have a Perl code that does this but it is horribly slow. Is there a way to do it faster? Typically the input files will contain 100K lines. use strict; use Data::Dumper; use Carp; my $input = $ARGV[0] || "myinput.txt"; my $INFILE_file_name = $input; # input file name open ( INFILE, '<', $INFILE_file_name ) or croak "$0 : failed to open input file $INFILE_file_name : $!\n"; my $out1 = $input."_feat_1.txt"; my $out2 = $input."_feat_2.txt"; my $out3 = $input."_feat_3.txt"; my $out4 = $input."_feat_4.txt"; my $out5 = $input."_feat_5.txt"; my $out6 = $input."_feat_6.txt"; unlink($out1); unlink($out2); unlink($out3); unlink($out4); unlink($out5); unlink($out6); print "$out1\n"; while ( <INFILE> ) { chomp; my @els = split(/\s+/,$_); my $lbl = $els[0]; my $OUTFILE1_file_name = $out1; # output file name open ( OUTFILE1, '>>', $OUTFILE1_file_name ) or croak "$0 : failed to open output file $OUTFILE1_file_name : $!\n"; print OUTFILE1 "$lbl $els[1]\n"; close ( OUTFILE1 ); # close output file my $OUTFILE2_file_name = $out2; # output file name open ( OUTFILE2, '>>', $OUTFILE2_file_name ) or croak "$0 : failed to open output file $OUTFILE2_file_name : $!\n"; print OUTFILE2 "$lbl $els[2]\n"; close ( OUTFILE2 ); # close output file # Etc.. until OUTFILE 6 } close (INFILE);

  • problem in reading output of dd command using pipe

    - by Ummar
I am developing an application, in which I want to redirect the output (progress information) of dd command to my C++ program, but it is not actually getting the output, here is the code FILE * progressInfo = popen("gzip -dc backup/backup.img.gz | pv -ptrbe -i 2 -s 2339876653 | dd of=/dev/sdb","r"); if(!progressInfo) { return -1; } char buf[1024]; while(fgets(buff, sizeof(buff),progressInfo)!=NULL) { std::cout << buff << endl; } but the problem is the progress information is not received in buff, and the output is continuously printed on terminal, and above program halts on while(fgets(buff, sizeof(buff),progressInfo)!=NULL), and as soon as the dd operation is completed, the very next line to loop block is executed. if anyone has any idea why the output is not returned to buff, and its continuously retuned on terminal?

  • Passing enums to functions in C++

    - by rocknroll
Hi all, I have a header file with all the enums listed (#ifndef #define #endif construct has been used to avoid multiple inclusion of the file) that I use in multiple cpp files in my application. One of the enums in the files is enum StatusSubsystem {ENABLED,INCORRECT_FRAME,INVALID_DATA,DISABLED}; There are functions in the application delcared as ShowStatus(const StatusSubsystem&); Earlier in the application when I made calls to the above function like ShowStatus(INCORRECT_FRAME); my application used to compile perfectly. But after some code was added The compilation halts giving the following error: File.cpp:71: error: invalid conversion from `int' to `StatusSubsystem' File.cpp:71: error: initializing argument 1 of `void Class::ShowStatus(const StatusSubsystem&) I checked the code for any conflicting enums in the new code and it looked fine. My Question is what is wrong with the function call that compiler shows as erroneous? For your reference the function definition is: void Class::ShowStatus(const StatusSubsystem& eStatus) { QPalette palette; mStatus=eStatus;//store current Communication status of system if(eStatus==DISABLED) { //select red color for label, if it is to be shown disabled palette.setColor(QPalette::Window,QColor(Qt::red)); mLabel->setText("SYSTEM"); } else if(eStatus==ENABLED) { //select green color for label,if it is to be shown enabled palette.setColor(QPalette::Window,QColor(Qt::green)); mLabel->setText("SYSTEM"); } else if(eStatus==INCORRECT_FRAME) { //select yellow color for label,to show that it is sending incorrect frames palette.setColor(QPalette::Window,QColor(Qt::yellow)); mLabel->setText("SYSTEM(I)"); } //Set the color on the Label mLabel->setPalette(palette); } A strange side effect of this situation is it compiles when I cast all the calls to ShowStatus() as ShowStatus((StatusSubsystem)INCORRECT_FRAME); Though this removes any compilation error, but a strange thing happens. Though I make call to INCORRECT_FRAME above but in function definition it matches with ENABLED. How on earth is that possible? Its like while passing INCORRECT_FRAME by reference, it magically converts to ENABLED, which should be impossible. This is driving me nuts. Can you find any flaw in what I am doing? or is it something else? The application is made using C++,Qt-4.2.1 on RHEL4. Thanks.

  • gcc compilations (sometimes) result in cpu underload

    - by confusedCoder
I have a larger C++ program which starts out by reading thousands of small text files into memory and storing data in stl containers. This takes about a minute. Periodically, a compilation will exhibit behavior where that initial part of the program will run at about 22-23% CPU load. Once that step is over, it goes back to ~100% CPU. It is more likely to happen with O2 flag turned on but not consistently. It happens even less often with the -p flag which makes it almost impossible to profile. I did capture it once but the gprof output wasn't helpful - everything runs with the same relative speed just at low cpu usage. I am quite certain that this has nothing to do with multiple cores. I do have a quad-core cpu, and most of the code is multi-threaded, but I tested this issue running a single thread. Also, when I run the problematic step in multiple threads, each thread only runs at ~20% CPU. I apologize ahead of time for the vagueness of the question but I have run out of ideas as to how to troubleshoot it further, so any hints might be helpful. UPDATE: Just to make sure it's clear, the problematic part of the code does sometimes (~30-40% of the compilations) run at 100% CPU, so it's hard to buy the (otherwise reasonable) argument that I/O is the bottleneck

  • Getting n-th line of text output

    - by syker
I have a script that generates two lines as output each time. I'm really just interested in the second line. Moreover I'm only interested in the text that appears between a pair of #'s on the second line. Additionally, between the hashes, another delimiter is used: ^A. It would be great if I can also break apart each part of text that is ^A-delimited (Note that ^A is SOH special character and can be typed by using Ctrl-A)

  • Question with "extern" in C

    - by why
When programming, I would like to split one large file(which contains main function) to many small files, so there is one common case: functions in small files can modify the var from main file, so i think extern is very useful! for instance: in main.c extern int i = 100; in small.c extern int i; fprintf(stdout, "var from main file: %d\n", i); I just want to know is my understanding right?

  • Bash script to (more or less) reliably check if the internet is up

    - by João Portela
I need a bash script to put in a cron job that every minute checks if the internet is up. This is how I did it: #! /bin/sh host1=google.com host2=wikipedia.org curr_date=`date +"%Y%m%d%H%M"` echo -n "${curr_date};" ((ping -w5 -c3 $host1 || ping -w5 -c3 $host2) > /dev/null 2>&1) && echo "up" || (echo "down" && exit 1) How would you do it? Which hosts would you ping? Thanks in advance.

  • Parsing line with delimiter in Python

    - by neversaint
I have lines of data which I want to parse. The data looks like this: a score=216 expect=1.05e-06 a score=180 expect=0.0394 What I want to do is to have a subroutine that parse them and return 2 values (score and expect) for each line. However this function of mine doesn't seem to work: def scoreEvalFromMaf(mafLines): for word in mafLines[0]: if word.startswith("score="): theScore = word.split('=')[1] theEval = word.split('=')[2] return [theScore, theEval] raise Exception("encountered an alignment without a score") Please advice what's the right way to do it?
