• I'm a contract developer and I think I'm about to get screwed [closed]

  I do contract development on the side. You could say that I'm a contract developer? Considering I've only ever had one client I'd say that's not exactly the truth - more like I took a side job and needed some extra cash. It started out as a "rebuild our website and we'll pay you $10k" type project. Once that was complete (a bit over schedule, but certainly not over budget), the company hired me on as a "long term support" contractor. The contract is to go from March of this year, expiring on December 31st of this year - 10 months. Over which a payment is to be paid on the 30th of each month for a set amount. I've been fulfilling my end of the contract on all points - doing server maintenence, application and database changes, doing huge rush changes and pretty much just going above and beyond. Currently I'm in the middle of development of an iPhone mobile application (PhoneGap based) which is nearing completion (probably 3-4 weeks from submission). It has not been all peaches and flowers though. Each and every month when my paycheck comes due, there always seems to be an issue of sorts. These issues did not occur during the initial project, only during the support contract. The actual contract states that my check should be mailed out on the 30th of the month. I have received my check on time approximately once (on time being about 2-3 days within the 30th). I've received my paycheck as late as the 15th of the next month - over two weeks late. I've put up with it because I need the paycheck. There have been promises and promises of "we'll send it out on time next time! I promise" - only to receive it just as late the next month. When I ask about payment they give me a vibe like "why are you only worried about money?" - unfortunately I don't have the luxury of not worrying about money. The last straw was with my August payment, which should have been mailed on August 30th. I received it on September 12th. The reason for the delay? "USPS is delaying it man! we sent it out on the 1st!" is the reason I got. When I finally got the check in the mail, the postage on the envelope was marked September 10th - the date it was run through the postage machine. I've been outright lied to, at this point. I carry on working, because again - I need a paycheck. I orchestrated the move of our application to a new server, developed a bunch of new changes and continued work on the iPhone app. All told I probably went over my hourly allotment (I'm paid for 40 hours a month, I probably put in at least 50). On Saturday, the 1st, I gave the main contact at the company (a company of 3, by the way - this is not some big corporation) a ring and filled him in on the status of my work for the past two weeks. Unusually I hadn't heard from him since the middle of September. His response was "oh... well, that is nice and uh.. good job. well, we've been talking within the company about things and we've certainly got some decisions ahead of us..." - not verbatim but you get the idea (I hope?). I got out of this conversation that the site is not doing very well (which it's not) and they're considering pulling the plug. Crap, this contract is going to end early - there goes Christmas! Fine, that's alright, no problem. I'll get paid for the last months work and call it a day. Unfortunately I still haven't gotten last months check, and I'm getting dicked around now. "Oh.. we had problems transferring funds, we'll try and mail it out tomorrow" and "I left a VM with the finance guy, but I can't get ahold of him". So I'm getting the feeling I'm not getting paid for all the work I put in for September. This is obviously breach of contract, and I am pissed. Thinking irrationally, I considered changing all their passwords and holding their stuff hostage. Before I think it through (by the way, I am NOT going to do this, realized it would probably get me in trouble), I go and try some passwords for our various accounts. Google Apps? Oh, I'm no longer administrator here. Godaddy? Whoops, invalid password. Disqus? Nope, invalid password here too. Google Adsense / Analytics? Invalid password. Dedicated server account manager? Invalid password. Now, I have the servers root password - I just built the box last week and haven't had a chance to send the guy the root password. Wasn't in a rush, I manage the server and they never touch it. Now all of a sudden all the passwords except this one are changed; the writing is on the wall - I am out. Here's the conundrum. I have the root password, they do not. If I give them this password all the leverage I have is gone, out the door and out of my hands. During this argument of why am I not getting paid the guy sends me an email saying "oh by the way, what's the root username and password to the server?". Considering he knows absolutely nothing, I gave him an "admin" account which really has almost no rights. I still have exclusive access to the server, I just don't know where to go. I can hold their data hostage, but I'm almost positive this is the wrong thing to do. I'd consider it blackmail, regardless of whether or not I have gotten paid yet. I can "break" something on the server and give them the whole "well, if you were paying me I could fix it!" spiel. This works from a "well he's not holding their stuff hostage" point of view, but what stops them from hiring some one else to just fix the issue at hand? For all I know the guys nephew is a "l33t hax0r" and can figure it out for free. I can give in, document as much as I can and take him to small claims court. This is breach of contract, I'm not getting paid. I have a case, right? ???? Does anyone have any experience in this? What can I do? What are my options? I'm broke, I can't afford a lawyer and I can barely afford not getting this paycheck. My wife doesn't work (I work two jobs so she doesn't have to work - we have a 1 year old) and is already looking at getting a part time job to cover the bills. Long term we'll be fine, but this has pissed me off beyond belief! Help me out, I'm about to get screwed.

• Nginx HTTPS redirects causing loop

  I've been banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out, so if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.   EJB 3.1 added a whole ton of features for simplicity and ease-of-use such as @Singleton, @Asynchronous, @Schedule, Portable JNDI name, EJBContainer.createEJBContainer, EJB 3.1 Lite, and many others. As part of Java EE 7, EJB 3.2 (JSR 345) is making progress and this blog will provide highlights from the work done so far. This release has been particularly kept small but include several minor improvements and tweaks for usability. More features in EJB.Lite Asynchronous session bean Non-persistent EJB Timer service This also means these features can be used in embeddable EJB container and there by improving testability of your application. • JqGrid addJSONData + ASP.NET 2.0 WS

  Dear community ! I am a bit lost. I' ve tried to implement a solution based on JqGrid and tried to use function as datatype. I've setted all by the book i guess, i get WS invoked and get JASON back, I got succes on clientside in ajaf call and i "bind" jqGrid using addJSONData but grid remains empty. I do not have any glue now... other "local" samples on same pages works without a problem (jsonstring ...) One difference I noticed between the test and production environment is when I used the soap url in the browser the production site pops up a 'Authentication Required' popup. When I gives my proxy username and password in this popup, it shows the soap request details. The same is applicable for the login url also. First it will ask for the 'Authentication' then it will take to the sugar crm login page? Is it a server security setting? If it is then how to set this user name and password using java in a web service call. The authentication required popup is same as the one which comes when we try to access the tomcat manager through a browser. Thanks

When I use the msxsl:node-set() function though, my results are blank. I'm aware that I'm setting $DataPath to a string, but shouldn't the node-set() function be creating a node set from it? Am I missing something? When I don't use a variable: <xsl:for-each select="/Rating/Path1/*"> I get the proper results. I have jsf-facelets-1.1.14.jar dependency in my pom.xml. I have no idea how to fix that. Help!! • using Silverlight 3's HtmlPage.Window.Navigate method to reuse an already open browser window

  Hi, I want to use an external browser window to implement a preview functionality in a silverlight application. There is a list of items and whenever the user clicks one of these items, it's opened in a separate browser window (the content is a pdf document, which is why it is handled ouside of the SL app). Now, to achieve this, I simply use HtmlPage.Window.Navigate(new Uri("http://www.bing.com")); which works fine. Now my client doesn't like the fact that every click opens up a new browser window. He would like to see the browser window reused every time an item is clicked. So I went out and tried implementing this: Option 1 - Use the overload of the Navigate method, like so: HtmlPage.Window.Navigate(new Uri("http://www.bing.com"), "foo"); I was assuming that the window would be reused when the same target parameter value (foo) would be used in subsequent calls. This does not work. I get a new window every time. Option 2 - Use the PopupWindow method on the HtmlPage HtmlPage.PopupWindow(new Uri("http://www.bing.com"), "blah", new HtmlPopupWindowOptions()); This does not work. I get a new window every time. Option 3 - Get a handle to the opened window and reuse that in subsequent calls private HtmlWindow window; private void navigationButton_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { if (window == null) window = HtmlPage.Window.Navigate(new Uri("http://www.bing.com"), "blah"); else window.Navigate(new Uri("http://www.bing.com"), "blah"); if (window == null) MessageBox.Show("it's null"); } This does not work. This does work. The only thing is that the window behaves a little strange and I'm not sure why: I'm behind a proxy and in all other scenarios I'm being prompted for my password. In this case however I am not (and am thus not able to reach the external site - bing in this case). This is not really a huge issue atm, but I just don't understand what's goign on here. Whenever I type another url in the address bar of the popup window (eg www.google.com) and press enter, it opens up another window and prompts me for my proxy password. As a temporary solution option 5 could do, but I don't like the fact that Silverlight is not able to manage this. One of the main reasons my client has opted for Silverlight is to be protected against all the browser specific hacking that comes with javascript. Am I doing something wrong? I'm definitely no javascript expert, so I'm hoping it's something obvious I'm missing here. Cheers, Phil

• ASP.NET MVC jquery.UI dialog - How to validate the dialog's input on server and return error?

  I am using jQuery1.4.2, ASP.NET MVC 2 and jQuery.UI-1.8. I am creating a data input dialog which works OK when all the data is valid, but I want to validate the input data on the server and return an error to the dialog describing the error and I am not quite sure how to do that and keep the dialog open. The dialog is opened when a link is clicked. The solution may be to try to bypass more of the MVC framework's default binding that handles the submit button clicks and creates the expected ProfilePermission object and calls the Controller's AddPermission POST Action method, but I was hoping there may be an easier way without have to write more jquery/javascript code to handle the button clicks and pass the data to the server. Rather I am getting an image with black background. I am not sure if this is the right way of doing it, but I found over the web that IViewObject::Draw method is used for taking the image of a webpage in IE. I was earlier doing the image capture using the Native PrintWindow() method as mentioned in the following codeproject's page - http://www.codeproject.com/KB/graphics/IECapture.aspx But the image size is humongous!   Hallo, I have a problem. I'am trying to get some data from my database. But with a limit. So i use the selectLimit command. When i use the selectCommand in stead of the selectLimit it return all the data correct as an json object an parses it correcly in the grid but it doens't use the LIMIT, Because when i add the limit. PDO doens't work anymore. So how do I get the object from the selectLimit to the grid? Can someone please help me get the grid working?

• jQuery DataTables server side processing and ASP.Net

  I'm trying to use the server side functionality of the jQuery Datatables plugin with ASP.Net. The ajax request is returning valid JSON, but nothing is showing up in the table. I originally had problems with the data I was sending in the ajax request. I was getting a "Invalid JSON primative" error. I discovered that the data needs to be in a string instead of JSON serialized, as described in this post: http://encosia.com/2008/06/05/3-mistakes-to-avoid-when-using-jquery-with-aspnet-ajax/. I wasn't quite sure how to fix that, so I tried adding this in the ajax request: "data": "{'sEcho': '" + aoData.sEcho + "'}" If the aboves eventually works I'll add the other parameters later. Right now I'm just trying to get something to show up in my table. The returning JSON looks ok and validates, but the sEcho in the post is undefined, and I think thats why no data is being loaded into the table. So, what am I doing wrong? Am I even on the right track or am I being stupid? Does anyone ran into this before or have any suggestions? • How to prevent jQuery FancyBox from closing immediately after submit?

  Hi! I'm loading an inline registration form in a FancyBox from jQuery. However after submitting the form, the box immediately closes while there is some feedback that I want to show the user in the FancyBox itself. This feedback is generated on the server side and is printed in the FancyBox. How can I make the box only closing when their is no feedback anymore? I was thinking about using ajax to just refresh the FancyBox itself and not the whole page after refreshing. But I just can't figure out how this ajax $.ajax({type, cache, url, data, success}); works... Also it seems like there's no reaction from the 'submit bind' in the javascript. I hope someone can help me with this problem. I paste my code below. If any questions, plz ask.. Thx in advance! • Parsing GeoRSS Feed with jQuery

  I'm attempting to use the jQuery jFeed plugin for parsing an Atom, GeoRSS feed and I'm running into issues extracting the information I need. For example, I need to extract the summary element and I would like to render the contents in a div on my HTML page. Additionally, I'd like to extract the contents from the georss:point elements and pass them into Google Maps to render them as points on a map. The problem is that it seems jFeed is stripping out the GeoRSS-related information. For example, I can extract the title element without issues, but it seems it doesn't extract the summary or georss:point elements, at all.   The problem I am facing is that when there is validation on a page and I am trying to display a model pop-up, the pop-up is not getting displayed. And by using fire-bug I have noticed that an error is being thrown. The button that is used to display the pop-up has cause validation set to false so I am stuck as to what is causing the error. • VS2010 Assembly Load Error

  I am getting the following error when I try to build an ASP.NET 4 project in Visual Studio 2010: "Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Dev\project\trunk\bin\Elmah.dll' or one of its dependencies. Operation is not supported. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131515)". I have verified that the dll does, in fact, exist, and is getting copied to the bin folder correctly. I have also tried removing and then re-adding the reference to the project. The build only fails when I switch the Solution Configuration to "Release". It does not fail when the Solution Configuration is set to "Debug".   I've got a web page that uses XMLHttpRequest to download a binary resource. Because it's binary I'm trying to use xhr.responseBody to access the bytes. I've seen a few posts suggesting that it's impossible to access the bytes directly from Javascript. This sounds crazy to me. Weirdly, xhr.responseBody is accessible from VBScript, so the suggestion is that I must define a method in VBScript in the webpage, and then call that method from Javascript. The best way? copying every byte? For a large binary stream that's not gonna be very efficient. There is also a possible technique using ADODB.Stream, which is a COM equivalent of a MemoryStream. See here for an example.
