    I am running ubuntu 11.10 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) to learn more about development in linux. I am using a git repository to save my work and have written a script to bundle my work up and save it to the shared folder for use while the virtual machine is not running. I would like to automatically run this script before shutdown so that my work is always available if the vm is off (currently I have to manually run the script). I don't know if upstart is the best way to accomplish this, but this is the config that I wrote as a test: description "test script to run at shutdown" start on runlevel [056] task script touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/start sleep 15 touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/start-long end script pre-start script touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/pre-start sleep 15 touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/pre-start-long end script post-start script touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/post-start sleep 15 touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/post-start-long end script pre-stop script touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/pre-stop sleep 15 touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/pre-stop-long end script post-stop script touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/post-stop sleep 15 touch /media/sf_LinuxEducation/post-stop-long end script The result is that only one touch is accomplished (the first touch in pre-start).   • Debian SMB share having permission issues in windows 7

    Hi Everyone, I setup a Debian squeeze server with samba. I then shared my /media directory with the following configuration: [media] comment=Hard Drives read only = no locking = no path = /media guest ok = yes browsable = yes directory mask = 0777 When the drives are mapped in Windows 7, the user can write to all of the subdirectories of media (sdb1, sdc1, etc), but cannot write to any folders that they create themselves in the subdirectories of media. For example, if the user mapped /media/sdb1 to Z:, and then creates a folder Z:\test, the folder is created successfully, but no files can be written to Z:\test. If the user ssh's into the server, they have no problems writing to these directories. I have included the screenshots, in order, of what happens on Windows. This samba share is mounted with ntfs-3g, if it makes a difference. Screenshots are here

  • Insanity Day 3

    So on Tuesday (Sept 25th) I did my 2nd Insanity workout (for those keeping track, I’m not counting the fit test as #1) and it was MURDER on my legs. I wasn’t able to get to it yesterday, and I’m noticing a trend in this first week – I can easily push to do it every 2nd day, but life is just too crazy busy right now (yeah yeah, excuses right? I look at it more like priorities – I have a tech conference I’m running next week, crazy days right now). Today I moved to the 3rd workout – but honestly I couldn’t get into it. It was the cardio recovery day, which is a lot of stretching and stuff. I think if I had been doing the first two sessions back to back I’d need it, but I didn’t want to cool down today – I wanted to push! So I moved to the next DVD in the series but for some reason couldn’t get it to run on my computer, even with SlyDVD. So – back to Disc 1 and the Plyometric Cardio Circuit! Fantastic workout again this morning. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not all of a sudden in amazing shape, but I am noticing already that I seem to be somewhat better – I’m really looking forward to my next fit test at the end of the month!

  • Horrible time with WAMP, Joomla and Windows 7 (Permissions)

    I have WAMP and Joomla installed on Windows 7. I have made a virtual host outside of the www directory that houses a test joomla site. I have also made a joomla component that I want to install and test on this virtual host. I am having constant problems with permissions. I have given all users full access to the folder containing the files under the security Tab in Win7. It seems to me that when (Apache/PHP) creates a file it put restrictions on the permissions which does not allow it to delete or edit the file anymore so I have to manually go and delete the files when I want to uninstall my component. Also, I cannot install the .zip - instead I have to unzip manually to the tmp folder because when I upload the zip in the Joomla Installer I get the same permissions problems as above. How can I get rid of these issues once an for all?

I assumed this to be an easy task, but embarassingly I'm not getting it for nearly 2 hours. So could someone give me an example?     I created a LiveUSB of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS using Pendrive Linux. -Created a separate 30GB partition using Windows 8 Disk Management -Disabled Secure Boot (Didn't find an option to disable EFI boot) -Disabled Fast Startup The laptop starts the GRUB menu shows up but it doesn't go beyond that no matter what option i choose. After choosing any option the screen goes blank but the power is still on i can see the power light.   • My Computer will not turn on?

    I recently built a gaming pc. It was working fine before the following events: I installed a graphics card driver update then: in windows it said that the user experience index needed to be refreshed, so i started the test and somewhere in the middle of the test my pc just switched off. No shutting down just stopped. Now it won't turn back on. I have checked its plugged in and the switch on psu is down, i tried a different power cable and i checked all the connections. When i press the power button nothing happens, no fans no lights no post beep. Computer Parts: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA78LMT-USB3 CPU: AMD FX-6350 @ 3.9 Ghz RAM: 2x4gb Crucial Ballistix Sport Power Supply: Tesla 750w psu Graphics card: XFX Radeon 7870 DD Case: CiT Vantage R Gaming Case Hard Drive: 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green Please help me, this computer is only a week old since i built it.   • trying to copy security groups to a user using dsmod group utility in AD

    i am trying to create a batch file that asks to enter source samid and destination samid. then using dsquery and dsget find out what security groups source samid is assigned to and assign destination samid to those security groups using dsmod. everything works except the dsmod group command. it doesnt do anything and batch file stops. if i literally put "CN=marketing,OU=test group,DC=abc,DC=com" instead of %%g and "CN=test1,OU=test group,DC=abc,DC=com" instead of %dusercn%, it works fine. can anyone help with this? i have pasted my scrip here. this last small thing is killing me. echo off echo %date% at %time% set /p susername=enter source user name: set /P dusername=enter destination user name: echo %susername% echo %dusername% set dusercn= %dusercn%=dsquery user -samid %dusername% echo %dusercn% for /f "tokens=*" %%g in ('dsquery user -samid %susername% ^|dsget user -memberof') do (dsmod group %%g -addmbr %dusercn%) echo completed pause

  • Large OSX 10.6 to Windows 7 smb transfers fail?

    I'm connecting to a windows 7 box from a OSX 10.6 box via smb: smb://ftp1 Connection works fine, I can transfer individual files one at a time, but as soon as I try and move an entier folder I get the following error: The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “test” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36) This error happens on all our OSX boxes when trying to push the entier folder to the Win7 box. The folder TEST in the above error message has -R 777 permissions. I can move every image file to the windows box one by one with no errors. But if I try an move the entier folder. bam error out. This error seems to kill the smb client on the Windows box as well. There's an FTP server on the windows box and I can FTP in from the OSX box and move everything just fine. Not sure what is going on here?

    I have an Mailbox which multiple users have access to, it works fine for me and I can add it in Outlook as an additional mailbox to my account and list all its content. I can access my personal mailbox using IMAP, I'm testing it by just telneting in and LIST'ing it. The problem is that another user trying to access it is having problems accessing it through IMAP; and I want to test if I can access the shared mailbox with my account - how can I do that in terms of IMAP commands? What I am doing now is: telnet mail.server 01 LOGIN user pass 02 LIST "" * 03 LOGOUT Edit: If there is another way to test this, that is an equally good answer.
