• Event Aggregator.. not getting a response, how to determine completion?

  I'm rewriting a vehicle tracking application, a google maps based thing.. The users are able to search for a vehicle by typing a few characters of the vehicles "callsign". My application is based around a sort of "event bus" within Backbone.. when a search occurs I send a message on the bus saying something like "does anyone match this?".. If a marker matches the search term it responds with a sort of "yes, I match!".. My challenge arises when no-one matches, I get no response.. it feels a little hacky to "wait a little while" and check if a response has been recieved.. The application is based around Backbone.js and using the Event Aggregator pattern described in the answer to this question on Stack Overflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7708195/access-function-in-one-view-from-another-in-backbone-js Is there a well defined design pattern that might assist me here? Sending a request for a response and not getting any responses?

• Advice on approaching a significant rearrangement/refactoring?

  I'm working on an application (hobby project, solo programmer, small-medium size), and I have recently redesigned a significant part of it. The program already works in it's current state, but I decided to reimplement things to improve the OO design. I'm about to implement this new design by refactoring a big part of the application. Thing is I'm not sure where to start. Obviously, by the nature of a rearrangement, the moment you change one part of the program several other parts (at least temporarily) break. So it's a little 'scary' to rearrange something in a piece of software that already works. I'm asking for advice or some general guidelines: how should I approach a significant refactoring? When you approach rearranging large parts of your application, where do you start? Note that I'm interested only in re-arranging the high-level structure of the app. I have no intention of rewriting local algorithms.

• How can I pull data from PeopleSoft on demand?

  I work in IT at a university and I'm working with about 5 different departments to develop a new process for students to apply to a specific school within the university (not the university as a whole). We're using a web-based college application vendor and adding the applicant questions for the school itself to the main university application. Currently the main application feeds into PeopleSoft. The IT staff here is building a new table to hold just our school's applicant data. I want to be able to access that data from PeopleSoft for use in external applications, but our IT staff doesn't really seem to understand what I'm requesting, as they simply tell me I can have access to the PS query tools. The problem is, I don't want to run just ad hoc queries, I want to be able to connect from outside PeopleSoft and show current data within the external app. I am unable to find documentation or get a clear answer to my question. Does PeopleSoft support access via a web services API or anything similar, and does that sound like the right direction for me to take?

• Installing VMware Worstation/Player 8.0.4 on Ubuntu 12.10 fails to load with Unable to start services

  I have been attempting to install this application for a few weeks without any success. I have installed and uninstalled the application and pathes with no change. I have even tried to load a VM in Virtualbox and install the application there to a base install of Ubuntu 12.10 and it still did not install. I have downloaded the patch and modified it to reflect the version of VMware Worstation and Player I am installing. I still receive the same error I saw in the first attempt to install the software. Which leads me to think that I am missing something. The error is: Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/modconfig-7674.log for details. I have the output of the log file if that will help. According to the dialogue box Virtual Network Device and VMware Blocking Filesystem fail to either load or execute. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How do I know I'm running inside a linux "screen" or not?

  The "screen" refers to a program mentioned in How to reconnect to a disconnected ssh session . That is a good facility. But there is a question I'd really like to know. How do I know whether I'm running inside a "screen"? The difference is: If yes, I know I can safely close current terminal window, e.g., close a PuTTY window, without losing my shell(Bash etc) session. If no, I know I have to take care of any pending works before I close the terminal window. Better, I'd like this status to be displayed in PS1 prompt so that I can see it any time automatically.

• Resize windows command line prompt?

  I'm working on a Windows xp machine. I wrote a program in assembly that outputs some text, and am trying to create a screenshot of the command line output (start-run-"cmd"). The problem is that the text initially printed by the program gets pushed up by later text and I cannot scroll to it. I tried playing around with the width and height under properties = layout but it seems to resize the window itself (the borders) without resizing the textarea inside the window (text does not have more "room", but the window is bigger). Does anybody know a workaround/solution for this? Thank you!

• Is it possible to grant access to a folder in a SVN server using SVN's API?

  I need to develop a web application (Using any language but I'm familiar with Frameworks Symfony2 and Rails), that is able to grant access to a user to a determined folder on another server on the same network from the application's front-end. I found out that SVN has an API and that I could interact with it with PHP or Ruby (Apparently), although I would be willing to program the application on another language, the server where the files are stored is using Windows and I thought on using Virtual SVN server, however I can't find any function on the API to grant users access to files and/or folders or access of any kind, like you usually do using the GUI (VirtualSVN on Windows). Am I missing anything? Is this even possible?

  I have an experience in programming. Im not that experience but i have created some desktop application like payroll etc. In web i had created some websites. Now im studying java for android. I already created an application on android and submitted it on google play.However, i feel like the excitement in creating application for android or web is gone. What i think i like is to program in c++ language. but i have a doubt mastering it. Because nowadays only a handful of company hire a c++ junior programmer. I think only in gaming industry that they would hire a c++ programmer and has an 3 or more years of xp. While in java there are lots of oppurtuniy especialy for android. and I dont have a plan studying objective c cause i dont have mac. SO what should i realy choose? thank you..

• Should I be worrying about limiting the number of textures in my game?

  I am working on a GUI in XNA 4.0 at the moment. (Before you point out that there are many GUIs already in existance, this is as much a learning exercise as a practical project). As you may know, controls and dialogs in Windows actually consist of a number of system-level windows. For instance, a dialog box may consist of a window for the whole dialog, a child window for the client area, another window (barely showing) for the frame, and so on. This makes detecting mouse hits and doing clipping relatively easy. I'd like to design my XNA GUI along the same lines, but using overlapping Textures instead of windows obviously. My question (yes, there's actually a question in this drivel) is: am I at risk of adversely affecting game performance and/or running low in resources if I get too nuts with the creating of many small textures? I haven't been able to find much information on how resource-tight the XNA environment actually is. I grew up in the days of 64K ram so I'm used to obsessing about resources and optimization. Anyway, any feedback appreciated.

• ORA-00900 Super Easy Fix (for some cases)

  Here is a really easy fix for some ORA-00900 errors. Well at least the one I saw the other day. This was something that I did not come across when searching either. I found lots of other ideas on what the problem might be but not the fix. Since I am fairly new to PL/SQL (TSQL only for a long time) this one stumped me for a while. Until I asked someone and they saw the error in about two seconds. When using the Command Window to add a view I was receiving an ORA-00900 error. So I checked that everything the view was referencing was there and that the permissions looked OK. The code for the view was fairly simple and it ran just fine in a regular SQL Window. It ended up that the Command Window did not like the space I had between the list of items in the select before the from. Bad: col1,col2,                               <--- does not like the empty linefrom tblSomething Good: col1,col2,from tblSomething I will just chalk that up to my familiarity with PL/SQL.   I have the following situation: I'm developing an add-in for a UML modeling tool. The models that can be created by the user are stored inside the main application and a limited access to the models is given through its API. However, the add-in has a lot of callbacks for events that are triggered by the main application, when changes to the model occur by the user. Since the models are already stored once in the main application, I considered it not practicable to duplicate the models in the add-in, which leads to the fact that I have only behavior in the add-in, rather than having a state. This behavior is mainly expressed by static functions, that are organized in functional cohesive classes. The callbacks for the events have always references to the model elements relevant for the specifc event that ocurred. First, it seemed to me that this is a procedural style in general, but procedural style doesn't consider events/callbacks, so this boils down to the question. How is this programming style called?

  I develop an android application and in my app I use a libary (jar) that I download from the internet. This jar is open-source under the "GNU General Public License v2". I tried to read the text of the license but had difficulty understanding it. My question is: can I use this libary without changing nothing in the jar in a commercial application? I will be making profit from selling my app which uses this GPL-ed .jar file. If possible, I would like to avoid converting my application to open-source.

• Web RDP not working in Ubuntu 11.10

  I am not able to connect to the remote machine from Ubuntu 11.10 machine using Web RDP. The following are the details. Obtained the license from the application jar. Keyboard: IBM101 I have removed the actual host name from the above details The error message on a pop up window is Application Error UnsatisfiedLinkError Unable to load library 'libX11':liblibX11.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. This error happens soon after Applet loads. I am supposed to get a WebRDP Screen with logo then a Windows Login screen for the remote machine. ( This is working fine in Linux Mint) Anyone has experienced this problem? Any solutions?

• MVC or Extract Service Layer

  we have an application that is built with .Net MVC. We are now tasked with exposing API's to third parties. Members on our team want to just continue down our current path and just use more controllers so we can reuse the backend of our current application. Logic tells me we need to create a seperate service layer when more clients are going to be accessing it, but .Net MVC seems to take care of all of this. Is it really acceptable architecture to use controllers in a stand alone application to expose API's and what would be the potential gains of extracting the service layer out?

• After installing Windows 7, there're lines on the screen

  Hi, I've just installed Windows 7 on my Dell machine. Everything works fine except that there are one or two lines on the screen. The line is so random and I am sure that it's now the monitor problem. The graphic card is NVidia GeForce 7600. I replaced the default driver with the driver from the manufacturer and it didn't help. When I change screen setting, the line goes away for a while and it comes back in different location. Sometimes an app window has the line and if I move the window the line follows with the window. What can I do to fix it? Thanks. Sam

• Why do Floatbox popups stop other animations when finished closing?

  I'm trying to essentially run a callback function when a Floatbox popup is closed via a hyperlink inside the popup. I want the page to scroll to the top and my login box to fade in. I'm using the following code: function showLogin() { jQuery('#header_no_theme_login_popup', parent.document.body).show(); window.parent.window.scrollTo(0,0); window.parent.fb.end(); } This works fine, but if I try to use jQuery fadeIn, the fade effect is truncated when the Floatbox popup finishes closing, leaving it with partial opacity. jQuery scrollTo doesn't seem to want to work at all. • Is there a win32 command line tabifier that supports ... `read details` (revised)?

  I use an editor that allows me to type in a command to run. In order to see the output without having to redirect it to a file, I precede the command with "cmd /k," which leaves an open cmd.exe window. So I'd like to find a way to catch the call to cmd.exe and pass it onto an application that tabifies cmd.exe, a terminal emulator as it's called. The desired result would be similar to what happens in a tabbed editor, when that editor is to open some file, it does so in another tab, and not in another window. While in a given situation it may be easier to modify the command to redirect output to display in the editor itself, in general it would be more helpful if I could find a way to catch all such calls into one window.

• HTMLUNIT Facebook javascript warning

  Hi I am trying to create simple application that would be able to search people on facebook using given e-mail. I am already able to log into an account using the HTMLunit tool and even create a page, which should throw result of my search. But when I try to print the result as XML the file is missing some blocks of javascript results (I can tell that they are missing by comparing file created by my application and source code, that can be viewed by using IE) Is there any way around this? I just need to get the same result IE's showsource function does. Thanks a lot. • Suddenly unable to export to war file from exclipse

  I been working on this Servlet project all morning and now suddenly I cannot get eclipse to export the project to a war file. I tried restarting eclipse and cleaning the project but I just get the same result. • Why does my UIWebView not Allow User Interaction?

  Hi, I'm new to these forums so I apologize for my noobieness. I did as thorough a search as I could, but I couldn't find anyone else with this issue, applogise if this has been covered elsewhere. I've created a very simple example of my problem. I'm sure I'm missing something but I can't for the life of me figure out what. I'm creating a UIWebView and adding it to a custom view controller that inherits from UIViewController. When the app loads in the iPad simulator, the uiwebview loads the desired page, but the UIWebView is entirely unresponsive. The webview does not pan or scroll and none of the in page links can be clicked. However, if you change the orientation of the webview suddleny everything works. Thanks in advance for your help!! • Dynamic Scoped Resources in WPF/XAML?

  I have 2 Xaml files, one containing a DataTemplate which has a resource definition for an Image brush, and the other containing a content control which presents this DataTemplate. The data template is bound to a view model class. Everything seems to work EXCEPT the ImageBrush resource, which just shows up white... Any ideas?
