• Configuring Ubuntu 10.04's Greeter Screen

  I have an Ubuntu server (9.04 at the moment) and an Ubuntu desktop which I recently upgraded to 10.04. Once I'd set up the users and groups on the desktop to match the server (I'm new to this, I think LDAP would do this for me, but that's another question), the friendly greeter screen no longer displays the same set of users1. In 9.04 (the previous version running on the desktop PC) there were four users shown. These had UIDs of 500 to 510. Changing the UIDs is one solution, but that would mean changing the UIDs on all my linux PCs, and that is a might PITA (unless there's a tool to make it less painful). How can I get the greeter in 10.04 to show users with UIDs in the 500s without resorting to changing the UIDs? I use the greeter screen with user pictures as the PC is mainly for use by my young children and clicking the picture is a bit easier (they still need to type a password though).

• Changes to talk/ytalk or alternative chat in the Linux terminal

  While looking for a piece of software that provides chat between 2 Linux server users logged in the terminal, I tried talk/ytalk. Unfortuntaley it provides chat between users on separate walls (each user has its own wall) and the messages lack timestamps. Is it possible to set it up so that at least timestamps are provided? Alternatively, is there any other software that could provide one wall on which users write messages prepended with time? Simple chat with messages listed in the order of submission would be ideal: 13:05:48 [bridgekeeper@...]: What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow? 13:06:28 [cascaval@...]: What do you mean? • Page Load Time - "Waiting on..." taking ages. What part of page request process is hung?

  I have a new cluster site running on Magento that's on a development server that is made up of 2 x web servers and 1 x database server. I have optimized the site in all areas I know (gzip, increasing php memory limits, increasing database memory limits etc) but sometimes the page loading gets stuck on 'waiting for xxx.xx.xx.xxx' (Chrome and other broswers, chrome just shows it that way). It can sit there for 40 + seconds, sometimes it just never loads and I close it in frustration. What part of the page loading process is this hung at? Is it a server issue, database issue, platform issue? I need to know where to start or whether to push the hosting provider about it.

• When is it better to offload work to the RDBMS rather than to do it in code?

  Okay, I'll cop to it: I'm a better coder than I am at databases, and I'm wondering where thoughts on "best practices" lie on the subject of doing "simple" calculations in the SQL query vs. in the code, such as this MySQL example (I didn't write it, I just have to maintain it!) -- This returns the username, and the users age as of the last event. • June 2012 Critical Patch Update for Java SE Released

  Hi, this is Eric Maurice. Oracle just released the June 2012 Critical Patch Update for Java SE.  This Critical Patch Update provides 14 new security fixes across Java SE products.  As discussed in previous blog entries, Critical Patch Updates for Java SE will, for the foreseeable future, continue to be released on a separate schedule than that of other Oracle products due to previous commitments made to Java customers.  12 of the 14 Java SE vulnerabilities fixed in this Critical Patch Update may be remotely exploitable without authentication.  6 of these vulnerabilities have a CVSS Base Score of 10.0.  In accordance with Oracle’s policies, these CVSS 10 scores represent instances where a user running a Java applet or Java Web Start application has administrator privileges (as is typical on Windows XP).  When the user does not run with administrator privileges (typical on the Solaris and Linux operating systems), the corresponding CVSS impact scores for Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability for these vulnerabilities would be "Partial" instead of "Complete", thus lowering these CVSS Base Scores to 7.5. Due to the high severity of these vulnerabilities, Oracle recommends that customers obtain and apply these security fixes as soon as possible: Developers should download the latest release at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html    Java users should download the latest release of JRE at http://java.com, and of course  Windows users can take advantage of the Java Automatic Update to get the latest release. Any help with testing is welcome! Fixed problem with SSRS keep-alive cookies. Keep-alive cookies are issued every time a report is opened during a browser session. Many people don't restart their browsers and in my case, Chrome doesn't get rid of the cookie session data on close - had to manually delete them for the reports to start working again. I added KeepSessionAlive control settings to manage SSRS keep-alive behavior. It is set to false by default to fix Bad Request 400: Request Too Long issue. You can find usage example in Fluent.cshtml. Fixed the bug when ReportViewer Control parameters was not parsed when ShowParameterPrompts parameter had not been set. Changed public static MvcReportViewerIframe MvcReportViewer method to use IEnumerable<KeyValuePair<string, object>> reportParameters instead of simple object. The reason is users reported that they mostly use multiple report parameters’ values. Added support for SSRS hosted on Windows Azure. Users should set MvcReportViewer.IsAzureSSRS property to true in Web.config to use Windows Azure authentication. I do not have Windows Azure SSRS and build the code using http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg552871.aspx#Authentication article. It would be nice if somebody from community tested the change or provided me a test report on Windows Azure for testing purposes.

• Authorization design-pattern / practice?

  On one end, you have users. On the other end, you have activities. I was wondering if there is a best practice to relate the two. The simplest way I can think of is to have every activity have a role, and assign every user every role they need. The problem is that this gets really messy in practice as soon as you go beyond a trivial system. A way I recently designed was to have users who have roles, and roles have privileges, and activities require some combinations of privileges. For the trivial case, this is more complex, but I think it will scale better. But after I implemented it, I felt like it was overkill for the system I had. Another option would be to have users, who have roles, and activities require you to have a certain role to perform with many activities sharing roles. A more complex variant of this would given activities many possible roles, which you only needed one of. And an even more complex variant would be to allow logical statements of role ownership to use an activity (i.e. Must have A and (B exclusive or C) and must not have D). I could continue to list more, but I think this already gives a picture. And many of these have trade offs. But in software design, there are oftentimes solutions, while perhaps not perfect in every possible case, are clearly top of the pack to an extent it isn't even considered opinion based (i.e. how to store passwords, plain text is worse, hashing better, hashing and salt even better, despite the increased complexity of each level) (i.e. 2, Smart UI designs for applications are bad, even if it is subjective as to what the best design is). So, is there a best practice for authorization design that is not purely opinion based/subjective?

• Outlook Prompting for password from Exchange server in domain environment

  We are running exchange 2007 in a domain environment. We have mostly outlook 2003 clients, but in process of upgrading to outlook 07 over the next couple of weeks. Some users (both 03 & 07) are constantly getting prompted to enter their credentials. The 07 client I was working on this morning states "needs password" in the bottom right corner. It is also speratic, as it will work fine most days but not some other days. The user I was working with this morning, has been working fine. Now it just started up today. I have been googling this, and have found lot's of information, but nothing that has helped yet. A lot of the information out there is for outlook users using a external email account. Being they already logged into the domain, these users should not be prompted for their credentials. Any advice out there?

• Folder permissions, red x on user object

  This question was asked before but was no answer. On shared folders on the file server, for the domain user name object under the security tab, the icon has a red x. There are no symptoms, the users have full access, there is just a red x on the icon for their name. Why is this? For clarification, logged into the windows 2008 r2 file server, browse to a users shared folder, right click on the folder, hit properties, click the security tab. The object representing the users domain name has a little red x on the lower right hand corner of the icon that looks like a single man. There are no symptoms beyond me wondering why the red x is there.

• OpenOffice Calc: How can I count the number of different items with data pilot?

  Hi all, I have a rather long spreadsheet with historical information of issues solved by some user on a colaborative environment. The spreadsheet have the following (relevant) columns date, week no., project, author id, etc... The week no. is calculated from the date, is basically the year concatenated with the week number within that year; for instance, both 2009-02-18 and 2009-02-20 yield the week number 200908 - the 8th week of year 2009; and 2009-02-23 yields 200909 - the 9th week of year 2009. I need to count how many different users (given by author id) contributed to some project, on a weekly basis. I have setup a data pilot with the week as Row Field, the project as the Column Field, and count-author as the Data Field. However, this counts the author id as different instances. This is not what I need. I need to count how many different users contributed to each project on a weekly basis. I expect to get something like: projects week Project1 Project2 Project3 200901 10 2 200902 2 7 Each inner cell containing how many different users contributed. With the count-author configuration, what I get is how many contributions (total) got the project on that week. Is there a way to tell OpenOffice Calc to do what I want?

  HI, We have an internal web server which is available through Internet and from local network. The server is located in the local network. The current configuration is the following: To access through Internet you use http://webexample.com To access through Local Network you use http://myweb The main problem is that the local users cannot share links with external users. Thats a problem for us. I want to setup the following configuration: All users (local and Internet) access through http://webexample.com The local DNS server resolves http://webexample.com to the local Network IP (i.e 192.168.2.100) Any other suggestion? Which is the best way to override http://webexample.com resolution in Windows Server? It can be done on DNS server or it have to be done in hosts file?

• WinXP password messed up after reset

  I changed my winXP logon password - but could not get in. Obviously I made the some mistake twice... caps lock or something but couldn't get the password. So I booted into safe mode, when into Users and changed the password. Now I when I restart I can get in at logon with my new password, but the standard screensaver - which used to be the same as my user logon - now is something different. I think it's still the previous one which I couldn't get right. Now when I go into Users (not in safe mode) and try and change the password I can't. It won't accept my new user logon which works fine when logging on. I think this too is still the previous one which I couldn't get right. How can I definitely reset the password so it works at logon, in the control panel/users, and the screensaver?

• Exchange 2010 Room Mailbox Calendar Permissions

  Exchange 2010 sp2 Outlook 2007/2010 Server 2008 I have managed to set up several room mailboxes in exchange, people are able to book the rooms and they get a response from the exchange server. this is brilliant. however users are unable to view the calendar of the room mailbox to see what times are available, in a ideal world I would like users to only see if the room is free or not. I dont want users to see the details of the meeting (title, description etc) I have been trying to do this using the following command Add-MailboxFolderPermission -Identity meetingroom -User "Usergroup" -AccessRights AvailabilityOnly -DomainController AD-Server This throws the following error Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. • What technical test should I give to a job candidate

  I'm not sure if this is the right stackexhange website, but : I have three candidates coming in tomorrow. One has 15 years of experience in PHP, and the two others have about 1 year of experience in PHP/ frontend development. For the last ones I was thinking about a test where they would have to develop a web app allowing users to manage other users, as in : Display a list of users, display a single user, modify an user, and add extended properties to an user. This way it would feature html, css, js, ajax, php and SQL. Do you think this would be a good test? What test should I give to the first one? He needs something much more difficult, I guess. I'm also listening, if you have any advice/ideas about what makes a good developer, and what I should pay attention to in the guys' codes. I was also considering thinking outside of the box, more algorithm-related, and asked him to make the fastest function to tell if a number is a prime number, because there are a lot of optimizations you can apply to such a function. They have one day to do it.

• Force a Windows 7 user to change password when it has expired

  Is it possible to force users (on Windows 7 PCs) to change their password once it has expired? Currently our users get notifications that their passwords will expire in 7, 3, 2 and 1 days but once the password has expired they are still able to log into their machines with the expired password. Most of our users ignore the warnings and don't change their password until we tell them they have to (when they ring Help Desk asking why their email and intranet isn't working). From memory, Windows XP machines would show a message at login that the password had expired and then offer the change password screen. Is it possible to do the same thing under Win7? Similar to how if you set a user's account to "must change password at next login" it gives the change password screen automatically.

• Why doesn't this script work?

  I've been using this bash script: for i in $(ls); do mv $i a$i; done to prepend all filenames in a folder with the letter a. I'm afraid that at some point I'll accidentally use this script in the wrong directory and prepend a ton of filenames that I don't want prepended. So I decided to explicitly cite the path to the file. So now my script looks like this: for i in $(ls /cygdrive/c/Users/path/to/Images); do mv /cygdrive/c/Users/path/to/Images/$i /cygdrive/c/Users/path/to/Images/a$i; done It does prepend the filename with the letter a, but it also appends the filename with this ? symbol. Any ideas why it would do that? If it helps any, I'm using cygwin on a Windows 7 box. Thanks for the help!

• 2 sited hosted in NGINX with separate SSL certs. IE8 posting invalid when starting at one site going to the other

  If users with IE8 go directly to www.xyz.com, SSL cert is fine. Users going directly to www.zyx.com have no issues with cert. If users start at one site and go to the other, they get invalid cert with xyz being used on zyx which should not be happening. Reading the forums NGINX has SNI enabled and I have the correct version of OpenSSL to be able to handle multiple certs. IE8 seems to be the issue but these are customer facing sites. Is there a fix to make NGINX work for the customers experiencing the issue.

• How to implement a no-login authentication system

  I am looking to build a very loose authentication system that can track a user and link submitted data/comments to a specific user. The submissions are essentially anonymous, but a user may want to edit his submission/comment at a later date. I want the experience to be as smooth as possible so do not want to ask users to sign up for an account and then login each time. There is no point as their submissions are not in their name and to another user browsing the site, there is no way of linking a submission to a specific user (think anonymous comments on a blog post or pastie). However, the user should have the ability to edit (at least in the short term) the content they have posted. The way I imagine doing this would be to place a unique identifier in a cookie on the users machine. This would enable me to link a submission to a user, and while that cookie remained on the users machine, I would allow them to edit their content. Of course, if the cookie is lost, or the user accesses the site from a different browser, then they would not be able to edit their content, but this is not really an issue, they can always resubmit a new piece of content. Is there a better way of doing this? How can I implement this so that the user can edit their data for the longest possible amount of time.

• Cant register this user

  I wanted to ask this question on meta, but it said, I have to log in first (which is where I have the problem!) I answered a question with this user. But when I tried to register and click on the stack exchange icon, it only displays three dots (animated) and never comes back. I suspected a firefox problem so I tried firefox on windows: And yes, I was able to create an account linked with my other accounts ( http://unix.stackexchange.com/users/27867/holgero and http://stackoverflow.com/users/1779245/holgero ) when I ran the latest firefox version under windows 7 in a virtual box. Then I upgraded my linux firefox to the newest version and deleted the other account under windows again. But still I cannot register this account ( http://superuser.com/users/177338/holgero ). On unix.stackexchange or stackoverflow I never had any problems with the registration, superuser seems to be different. So, how do I register this user and have it linked with my other stackexchange accounts?

• How to Deal with an out of touch "Project manager"

  This "manager" is 70+ yrs old and a math genius. We were tasked with creating a web application. He loves SQL and stored procedures. He first created this in MS access. For the web app I had to take his DB migrate to SQL server. His first thought was to have a master stored procedure with a WAITFOR Handling requests from users. I eventually talked him out of that and use asp.net mvc. Then eventually use the asp.net membership. Now the web app is a mostly handles requests from the pages that is passed to stored procedures. It is all stored procedure driven. The business logic as well. Now we are having an one open DB connection per user logged in plus 1. I use linq to sql to check 2 tables and return the values thats it period. So 25 users is a load. He complains why my code is bad cause his test driver stored procedure simulates over 100 users with no issue. What are the best arguments for not having the business logic not all in stored procedures?? How should I deal with this?? I am giving an abbreviated story of course. He is a genius part owner of the company all the other owners trust him because he is a genius. and quoting -"He gets things done. old school".
