Very slow wireless connection (unrelated to power management) using Netgear N150 WNA1100 in 12.04

I am using a Netgear N150 WNA1100 USB Adapter. The network driver is: ath9k_htc. When I use Ubuntu 12.04 my wireless connection is much slower than when I use the WNA1100 with my Windows 7 installation on the same machine. I have been researching this and the most common reason for this seems to be related to power management. However for me this is off by default. I had entered a bunch of different commands and, at one stage, I got it to work at full power. But then I rebooted the machine and it went back to slow again. After entering the different commands I was afraid that I may have messed something up, so I performed a fresh install of Ubuntu. I still have the same problem. My wireless connection is still much slower when using Ubuntu than when using Windows 7. I am not sure what other info could help... EDIT: Ok, I have made live usb from the iso file I used to install Ubuntu on this pc, and ran it on my laptop. Still the same problem. However la[top works grand on cable. I suppose this means that my wireless adapter or network driver can be eliminated as root of the problem.. So maybe to do with router itself? I use ZyXEL P-660HW-D1

What does the Sys_PageIn() function do in Quake?

I've noticed in the initialization process of the original Quake the following function is called. volatile int sys_checksum; // **lots of code** void Sys_PageIn(void *ptr, int size) { byte *x; int j,m,n; //touch all memory to make sure its there. The 16-page skip is to //keep Win 95 from thinking we're trying to page ourselves in (we are //doing that, of course, but there's no reason we shouldn't) x = (byte *)ptr; for (n=0 ; n<4 ; n++) { for (m=0; m<(size - 16 * 0x1000) ; m += 4) { sys_checksum += *(int *)&x[m]; sys_checksum += *(int *)&x[m + 16 * 0x10000]; } } } I think I'm just not familiar enough with paging to understand this function. the void* ptr passed to the function is a recently malloc()'d piece of memory that is size bytes big. This is the whole function - j is an unreferenced variable. My best guess is that the volatile int sys_checksum is forcing the system to physically read all of the space that was just malloc()'d, perhaps to ensure that these spaces exist in virtual memory? Is this right? And why would someone do this? Is it for some antiquated Win95 reason?

What differences should I know? I just upgraded to 13.10 from 10.10 [on hold]

I ran Ubuntu 10.10 for a long time because I liked the menu style. The change in GUI with the upgrades drove me nuts but I finally gave in and downloaded Saucy Salamander 13.10 x64. It's a fresh install running as a virtual machine guest in VMWare Workstation 9 on a Windows 7 x64 host. Well it looks like all those icons are still there on the side which I would be OK with if there were some way to bring back my menus. I have no organized way of accessing things now, or do I? That is the purpose for this question, maybe there is some functionality I just can't find but is there. Also all my fine tuning was gone. I used to be able to change DPI but that's gone. I went ahead and installed Unity Tweak Tool via sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool but I couldn't find an icon for it after I installed it.. because again no menu. So I did a search for it and found it there. I've changed the font and which side the window buttons appear on which is good enough for now. Anyway... any suggestions you may have for me I'm game. I'm a Windows 7 user primarily but I use Ubuntu every once in a while. I really liked the old style where everything was categorized like for Applications there was Accessories, Games, Graphics, Internet, Office, Sound & Video, Wine.

WCF Publish/Subscribe and using callbacks to send data to specific users

Hello thanks for looking, I'm working on a project at the moment and have become a little stuck. I'm creating a client server app, which allows a client to subscribe to the server to have messages forwarded to it. The issue I'm having is that when the client subscribes I wish for them to only recieve updates that relate to them. The system basically passes messages from a SQL server DB which the server monitors. When a new message is recieved the server should only forward the message to the clients that it applys to, based on whos logged on the client machine. I've had a look and found code samples which sign up for messages to be broadcast across all clients who have subscribed, but not any that show how to identify individual clients and if messages apply to them. If anyone could help or point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. Accessing Oracle DB through SQL Server using OPENROWSET

I'm trying to access a large Oracle database through SQL Server using OPENROWSET in client-side Javascript, and not having much luck. Here are the particulars: A SQL Server view that accesses the Oracle database using OPENROWSET works perfectly, so I know I have valid connection string parameters. However, the new requirement is for extremely dynamic Oracle queries that depend on client-side selections, and I haven't been able to get dynamic (or even parameterized) Oracle queries to work from SQL Server views or stored procedures. Client-side access to the SQL Server database works perfectly with dynamic and parameterized queries. I cannot count on clients having any Oracle client software. Therefore, access to the Oracle database has to be through the SQL Server database, using views, stored procedures, or dynamic queries using OPENROWSET. Because the SQL Server database is on a shared server, I'm not allowed to use globally-linked databases. My idea was to define a function that would take my own version of a parameterized Oracle query, make the parameter substitutions, wrap the query in an OPENROWSET, and execute it in SQL Server, returning the resulting recordset. You must access this provider through a linked server. which makes no sense to me. The Microsoft explanation for this error relates to a registry setting (DisallowAdhocAccess). This is set correctly on my PC, but surely this relates to the DB server and not the client PC, and I would expect that the setting there is correct since the view mentioned above works. One alternative that I've tried is to eliminate the enclosing EXEC in the Open statement: rs.Open(e,db); but this generates the same error. I also tried putting the OPENROWSET in a stored procedure. This works perfectly when executed from within SQL Server Management Studio, but fails with the same error message when the stored procedure is called from Javascript. Is what I'm trying to do possible? If so, can you recommend how to fix my code? Or is a completely different approach necessary? Any hints or related information will be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Deploying WCF Tutorial App on IIS7: "The type could not be found"

Hello, I've been trying to follow this tutorial for deploying a WCF sample to IIS . I can't get it to work. This is a hosted site, but I do have IIS Manager access to the server. However, in step 2 of the tutorial, I can't "create a new IIS application that is physically located in this application directory". I can't seem to find a menu item, context menu item, or what not to create a new application. I've been right-clicking everywhere like crazy and still can't figure out how to create a new app. I suppose that's probably the root issue, but I tried a few other things (described below) just in case that actually is not the issue. Here is a picture of what I see in IIS Manager, in case my words don't do it justice: This is "deployed" at http://test.com.cws1.my-hosting-panel.com/IISHostedCalcService/Service.svc . The error says: The type 'Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.CalculatorService', provided as the Service attribute value in the ServiceHost directive, or provided in the configuration element system.serviceModel/serviceHostingEnvironment/serviceActivations could not be found. I also tried to create a virtual dir (IISHostedCalc) in dotnetpanel that points to IISHostedCalcService . When I navigate to http://test.com.cws1.my-hosting-panel.com/IISHostedCalc/Service.svc , then there is a different error: This collection already contains an address with scheme http. There can be at most one address per scheme in this collection. Interestingly enough, if I click on View Applications, it seems like the virtual directory is an application (see image below)... although, as per the error message above, it doesn't work. What I want to be able to do is assign a Command, or use an event, so that when the user clicks on the Day it will notify the parent of the Day object that it has been clicked. I got an error stating: 'ResourceDictionary' root element requires a x:Class attribute to support event handlers in the XAML file. Either remove the event handler for the Executed event, or add a x:Class attribute to the root element. Which I think means that there is no code-behind file for a ResourceDictionary, or something to that effect. In any event, I'm not sure if I should be using Commands here, or somehow tying events to the Rectangle in question, or if this is even possible. I've seen various places where it sure looks like it's possible, I'm just unable to translate what I'm seeing into something that actually works, hence this post. Thanks in advance.

Refactoring multiple interfaces to a common interface using MVVM, MEF and Silverlight4

I am just learning MVVM with MEF and already see the benefits but I am a little confused about some implementation details. The app I am building has several Models that do the same with with different entities (WCF RIA Services exposing a Entity framework object) and I would like to avoid implementing a similar interface/model for each view I need and the following is what I have come up with though it currently doesn't work. The common interface has a new completed event for each model that implements the base model, this was the easiest way I could implement a common class as the compiler did not like casting from a child to the base type. The code as it currently sits compiles and runs but the is a null IModel being passed into the [ImportingConstructor] for the FaqViewModel class. Windows CE Programming Serial Port - Getting Garbled Output

I am programming a Windows CE 6 device (Motorola MC3100 scanner Terminal). Using Lazarus FPC to compile it. After 3 weeks work I reluctantly post here in the hope someone can suggest why I am getting garbled output from the serial port. The code I am using is posted below. This is the standard code I have found from several places. The OpenPort works OK. When I send the string using SendString('ABCDEF') I get garbled input to the PC Serial port such as: 4[#131][#26][#0][#0][#0][#0] (the bracketed data indicates that it is a non-printable character ASCII Code) Obviously it is connecting to the port OK AND it is sending the correct no of characters (7). I have tried all combinations of Baud Rate, Data Bits, Parity and Stop Bits without any joy. Also tried changing cable, on a different PC etc. Could it be I need to set something else in the DCB? WCF Contract Name 'IMyService' could not be found?

The contract name 'IMyService' could not be found in the list of contracts implemented by the service 'MyService'.. --- System.InvalidOperationException: The contract name 'IMyService' could not be found in the list of contracts implemented by the service 'MyService'. This is driving me crazy. I have a WCF web service that works on my dev machine, but when I copy it to a Virtual Machine that I am using for testing, I get the error that seems to indicate that I am not implementing the interface, but it does not make sense because the service does work on my windows xp IIS. the Virtual machine uses Windows Server 2003 IIS. Any ideas? One thing to note here is that I get this error on my VM even while just trying to access the service in a web browser as the client. Note: I am using principalPermissionMode="UseWindowsGroups", but that is not a problem on my local machine. I just add myself to the appropriate windows group. How can I make it so that the C# Code Behind will have the controls generated and not null in my Page_Load event so that developers can just do this: testNameBox.Text = "foo"; ownerBox.Text = "bar"; descriptionBox.Text = "baz";

VFP Unit Matrix Multiply problem on the iPhone

Hi. I'm trying to write a Matrix3x3 multiply using the Vector Floating Point on the iPhone, however i'm encountering some problems. This is my first attempt at writing any ARM assembly, so it could be a faily simple solution that i'm not seeing. I've currently got a small application running using a maths library that i've written. I'm investigating into the benifits using the Vector Floating Point Unit would provide so i've taken my matrix multiply and converted it to asm. Previously the application would run without a problem, however now my objects will all randomly disappear. This seems to be caused by the results from my matrix multiply becoming NAN at some point. While debugging i've managed to notice that if i were to say _A = C prior to the return and after the ASM, _A will not necessarily be equal to C which has only increased my confusion. I had thought it was possibly due to the pointers I'm giving to the VFPU being incrimented by lines such as "fldmias %0!, {s0-s2} \n\t" however my understanding of asm is not good enough to properly understand the problem, nor to see an alternative approach to that line of code. Anyway, I was hoping someone with a greater understanding than me would be able to see a solution, and any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you :-)

More outlook VSTO help...

I posted an article here (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1095195/how-do-i-set-permissions-on-my-vsto-outlook-add-in) and I was able to build my installer. I thought that once the installer built itself, everything would work fine. I was wrong. It works on about half of the PC's I've run the installer on. My problem is that the other half doesn't work. I'm trying to install an add-in to Outlook Office 2003. I've even gone so far as to create the steps manually by using a batch file. Nothing seems to work on these PCs and I can't find a common denominator that I can rule out or in that will make the VSTO Addin work. Here is the batch file I am using. What am I doing/not-doing wrong with this? I could really use a VSTO expert's help. Thanks!!!! EDIT I've changed the batch file and registry settings to reflect recent updates to them.
