• Smart defaults [SSDT]

  I’ve just discovered a new, somewhat hidden, feature in SSDT that I didn’t know about and figured it would be worth highlighting here because I’ll bet not many others know it either; the feature is called Smart Defaults. It gets around the problem of adding a NOT NULLable column to an existing table that has got data in it – previous to SSDT you would need to define a DEFAULT constraint however it does feel rather cumbersome to create an object purely for the purpose of pushing through a deployment – that’s the situation that Smart Defaults is meant to alleviate. The Smart Defaults option exists in the advanced section of a Publish Profile file: The description of the setting is “Automatically provides a default value when updating a table that contains data with a column that does not allow null values”, in other words checking that option will cause SSDT to insert an arbitrary default value into your newly created NON NULLable column. In case you’re wondering how it does it, here’s how: SSDT creates a DEFAULT CONSTRAINT at the same time as the column is created and then immediately removes that constraint: ALTER TABLE [dbo].[T1]    ADD [C1] INT NOT NULL,         CONSTRAINT [SD_T1_1df7a5f76cf44bb593506d05ff9a1e2b] DEFAULT 0 FOR [C1];ALTER TABLE [dbo].[T1] DROP CONSTRAINT [SD_T1_1df7a5f76cf44bb593506d05ff9a1e2b]; You can then update the value as appropriate in a Post-Deployment script. Pretty cool! On the downside, you can only specify this option for the whole project, not for an individual table or even an individual column – I’m not sure that I’d want to turn this on for an entire project as it could hide problems that a failed deployment would highlight, in other words smart defaults could be seen to be “papering over the cracks”. If you think that should be improved go and vote (and leave a comment) at [SSDT] Allow us to specify Smart defaults per table or even per column. @Jamiet

• From .psd to working HTML and CSS - help me suck less

  I am not much of a designer. My strength lies in coding. That said, I'm often forced into the role of "The Man," responsible for all aspects of site creation. So, that said I'm wondering if the pros can give me tips/solutions/links to tutorials to my main questions. Resolution. What should I aim for? What are the lower and upper edges I should be aware of? I know that systems like 960 Grid were popular recently. Is that the number I should still aim for? Slicing up a .psd - are there any tricks I should know? I've always found it difficult to get my slices pixel perfect. I'm also really slow at it. I must be looking at it wrong, or missing something fundamental. The same goes for text. Layouts are always filled with the classic "Lorem...", but I can never seem to get real content to fit quite as well on the screen. The advanced (to me, anyway) looking things, like a part of a logo/image overlaying what looks like a content area. How does one do that? How do layouts change/are informed by the decision to go fixed or liquid? Again, any tips/tricks/suggestions/tutorials you can share would be greatly appreciated.

• Patterns & Practices: Composite Services CTP2 is Public

  Finally the last CTP and pre-release version for the Composite Services is out. There were quite a lot of changes since CTP1. We added many new samples and many enhancements to the repository (DB) which is now called Inventory in sync with SOA Patterns. Here is a brief list of the main changes according to the included documentations.   Changes and additions in this release This CTP release contains reusable source code and samples to illustrate implementation for the following patterns and scenarios: Repair and Resubmit – this pattern is implemented in ESB Toolkit 2.0 as part of Exception Management Framework (EMF). This code drop provides code sample how to implement this pattern for Windows AppFabric workflow service, using Exceptions Web Service and workflow activities to create fault message, which will be created in EMF database.  Analytic Tracing – this code drop contains reusable code and samples for implementing ETW tracing: event collector service and database that store collected events. This capability may be used for scenarios that need flexibility on how collected events are decoded and processed via extensibility points you can configure and implement:  plugins and event decoders with leveraging ETW tracing capabilities provided by the event collector service.   Inventory Centralization – this code drop contains service catalog database, web services and samples to show how to implement Metadata Centralization, Schema Centralization and Policy Centralization patterns.  Service Virtualization – we included sample for implementing this pattern using WCF routing service( which is part of .NET framework) and service metadata centralization capabilities to define routing service metadata in service catalog. Termination Notification – we included sample for implementing this pattern using sample WCF service and policy centralization capabilities provided by this CTP release.   You will also find many new videos that will be uploaded to the home page any time soon. • Best way to convert existing project to be open source in GitHub

  I've been working on a personal closed source project for some time and would like to make it open source. I've never created my own open source project before so it will be a good learning experience. I have been using GitHub as source control, so once I've written some decent docs on how to use and develop for it etc, it should be as simple as switching the repo to be public right? I guess my main question is around licencing. I was thinking of going with Apache 2.0 licence just because it seems to be widely used. It requires the licence header to be attached to all the source files, but if I do that now then all the other commits in the past will have it missing. Does that mean some one could pull an earlier version and it wouldn't have a licence? Is it best to start a new repo with the initial commit containing all the code with licence headers? Or maybe is there some advanced Git functionality that allows me to apply the licence header to all existing commits some how? Cheers.

• High level vs. low level programming. Do I really have to choose?

  Every once in a while I'm asked in interviews which I like the best- low level or high level. It seems to me that the implicit message is that they are both a specialty and they want to know which direction I'm heading. The trouble is, I seem to like both. Low level is extremely challenging and often requires a great deal of esoteric knowledge. High level is where all the sexy things happen: applications that people use directly, results that can be easily demonstrated (showed off) in a way that is accessible to everybody, and you get to work with really advanced tools and interact with new technologies. I would really love to do both, even if it means alternating between them (I doubt there are jobs that will let me do both simultaneously), but I'm guessing that the industry rewards specialists more than generalists. Will it really be problematic career wise if I never choose one over the other? Is it practical to alternate between the two in the sense that if I were to leave a job doing one of them, I should experience no "friction" trying to get a job doing the other (assuming I'm reasonably in the loop)? Are there career opportunities where you get to do both? Do I really have to choose one over the other?

  In an industry segment that nobody is ever 'asleep', I suppose no time is a good time to take SQL Server down for upgrades, and I had forgotten that my host was going to be doing that. Last night about 9pm (Arizona), in the middle of working on a blog post, things started going wonky and I finally realized everything was ok except for SQL Server. I turned in a ticket on it and was reminded about the maintenance schedule... guess I file those away in memory and just assume they'll happen while I'm asleep :) So, looking at the schedule, it appears that SQL Server for SilverlightCream is going to be down tonight. Minimum is 9-12pm Arizona time... mileage and time may vary. Since all the posts are run through SC to get the Skim count, having SQL down sucks, but I'd rather we got maintenance than have to react to a crash because of something that wasn't maintained. I'll try to get the next 'Cream post out early so that the bulk of folks can dig through it prior to the outage. Meanwhile, for those of you in Phoenix, tonight is our Phoenix Silverlight User Group April meeting, and Joel Neubeck is going to be giving us the run-through on Windows Phone 7! We're not as advanced as those MVP rock-stars in California like Victor Gaudioso who streams his user group meeting, so you'll just have to show up for the goodness! • Collaboration using github and testing the code

  The procedure in my team is that we all commit our code to the same development branch. We have a test server that runs updated code from this branch so that we can test our code on the servers. The problem is that if we want to merge the development branch to the master branch in order to publish new features to our production servers, some features that may not have been ready will be applied to the production servers. So we're considering having each developer work on a feature/topic branch where each of them work on their own features and when it's ready, merge it into the development branch for testing, and then into the master branch. However, because our test server only pulls changes from the development branch, the developers are unable to test their features. While this is not a huge issue as they can test it on their local machine, the only problem I foresee is if we want to test callbacks from third-party services like sendgrid (where you specify a url for sendgrid to update you on the status of emails sent out). How to handle this problem? Note: We're not advanced git users. We use the Github app for MacOSX and Windows to commit our work.

• How to enable Unity 3D support in 12.04 using open-source drivers for RadeonHD cards?

  As the title says I can't enable the Unity 3D support when I'm using open-source drivers (xorg-edgers). I have an xfx Radeon HD 6950 by the way. If I install the proprietary 12.3 drivers from AMD it works, but I get poorer 2D performance than the open-source drivers and also I get some freezes and lock ups at random. So because of this I'm trying the open-source drivers and so far no issues at all, except this one. Running this command $ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p shows this: OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc. OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300) OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.2 Not software rendered: no Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: yes GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: no And this command $ lspci -nn | grep VGA shows: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Cayman PRO [Radeon HD 6950] [1002:6719] So, is this normal? Do I need to go back to proprietary drivers to enable Unity 3D? If anyone can give me help, I'll much appreciate it.

  I opened JDeveloper, created a content repository connection with all the required fields. While testing the connection, the connection became successful. But while navigating to the Webcenter Content Connection, I am ( Always use past tense ) getting the following error. Notice the inconsistency in the image resolutions SEVERE: Could not list contents of folder with ID = dCollectionID:-1oracle.stellent.ridc.protocol.ServiceException: No service defined for COLLECTION_DISPLAY. To solve the issue, please find the following the steps in Webcenter Content. 1. Login into webcenter content : https://<hostname>:<port number>/cs 2. Click on 'Administration' and select 'Admin Server' 3. This will open a new window in browser, please select 'Component Manager'. 4. In the right side window, please click on 'Advanced component manager' 5. We can see all the enabled and disabled features. The main problem for this error is folders_g is not enabled and Framework folders might have enabled. But for creating a connection with webcenter portal framework or with webcenter spaces, we need folders_g, then only we will get Contribution folder. 6. come to the enabled feature session, select Framework folders and disable it. 7. Come to the disabled feature session, select folders_g in the list and enable it. 8. Restart the Webcenter content node. 9. Login into webcenter content system, go to 'Browse Content' menu. If we are able to see 'Contribution Folder' the problem is solved. ( Avoid dubious sentences ) We can configure webcenter content with Webcenter portal framework or with webcenter spaces.

• White box testing with Google Test

  I've been trying out using GoogleTest for my C++ hobby project, and I need to test the internals of a component (hence white box testing). At my previous work we just made the test classes friends of the class being tested. But with Google Test that doesn't work as each test is given its own unique class, derived from the fixture class if specified, and friend-ness doesn't transfer to derived classes. Initially I created a test proxy class that is friends with the tested class. It contains a pointer to an instance of the tested class and provides methods for the required, but hidden, members. This worked for a simple class, but now I'm up to testing a tree class with an internal private node class, of which I need to access and mess with. I'm just wondering if anyone using the GoogleTest library has done any white box testing and if they have any hints or helpful constructs that would make this easier. Ok, I've found the FRIEND_TEST macro defined in the documentation, as well as some hints on how to test private code in the advanced guide. But apart from having a huge amount of friend declerations (i.e. one FRIEND_TEST for each test), is there an easier idion to use, or should I abandon using GoogleTest and move to a different test framework?

• AutoHotkey cannot interact with Windows 8 Windows&hellip;or can it!

  If you’ve installed Windows 8 and are trying to use AutoHotkey (AHK) to interact with some of the Winodws 8 Windows (such as the Control Panel for example), or with apps that need to be Ran As Administrator, then you’ve likely become very frustrated as I did to discover that AHK can not send any commands (keyboard or mouse input) to these windows.  This was a huge concern as I often need to run Visual Studio as an administrator and wanted my hotkeys and hotstrings to work in Visual Studio.  After a day of fighting I finally realized the answer (and it’s pretty obvious once you think about it).  If you want AHK to be able to interact with Windows 8 Windows or apps running as administrator, then you also need to have your AHK script Run As Administrator. If you are like me then you probably have your AHK scripts set to run automatically at login, which means you don’t have the opportunity to right-click on the script and manually tell it to Run As Administrator.  Luckily the work around is simple.  First, if you want to have your AHK script (or any program for that matter) run when you log in, create a shortcut to the application and place the shortcut in: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup Note that you will need to replace “[User Name]” with your username, and that “AppData” is a hidden folder so you’ll need to turn on viewing hidden folders to see it.  So by placing that shortcut there Windows will automatically run your script when you log on.  Now, to get it to run as an administrator by default, right-click on the shortcut and go to Properties.  Under the Shortcut tab, click on the “Advanced…” button and check off “Run as administrator”.  That’s it.  Now when you log onto Windows your script will automatically start up, running as an administrator; allowing it to interact with any application and window like you had expected it to in the first place.   Happy coding!

• Windows Phone 7 Prototype 002: Animated Page Transitions + Writeable Bitmaps

  Motion is a key part of WP7 application development. Without motion, the WP7 UI is just a bunch of text. Not nearly as exciting. To delight users, you can add some transitions between pages.  The sample app includes some storyboards to animate between two pages. Other people have noted that you can just use the transitioning content control form the SIlverlight toolkit. Peter Torr also had a nice animating frame control in his mix demo code (his blog has some other great code samples for WP7 app dev). I took some of those concepts and the code from the TransitioningContentControl to make a new animating frame control. In this prototype, the frame takes a snapshot of the old content and the new content using writeable bitmaps and animates the snapshots and then replaces those with the actual page. The benefit is smoother animation on pages with lots of controls. Otherwise, if you have a large panorama, it might not animate that cleanly.  Like the other solutions based on the TransitioningContentControl, you can centralize all the animations in one place and not have to handle them on each individual page. Peters code also had a nice snippet for choosing the animation based on the navigation direction so you could just have a forward / backward animation and not have to do anything on each page. You could also probably add some more advanced transitions using pixel shaders or make an default no transition state if you wanted to have some specific animation on a page where individual  controls transitioned out differently like some of the WP7 shell apps. • Please recommend a patterns book for iOS development

  I've read several books on iOS development and Objective-C, however what a lot of them teach is how to work with interfaces and all contain the model inside the view controller, i.e. a UITableViewController based view will simply have an NSArray as it's model. I'm interested in what the best practices are for designing the structure of an application. Specifically I'm interested in best practices for the following: How to separate a model from the view controller. I think I know how to do this by simply replacing the NSArray style example with a specific model object, however what I do not know how to do is alert the view when the model changes. For example in .NET I would solve this by conforming to INotifyPropertyChanged and databinding, and similarly with Java I would use PropertyChangeListener. How to create a service model for my domain objects. For example I want to learn the best way to create a service for a hypothetical Widget object to manage an internal DB and also services for communicating with remote endpoints. I need to learn the best ways to do this in a way that interface components can subscribe to events such as widgetUpdated. These services should be singleton classes and some how dependency injected into model/controller objects. Books I've read so far are: Programming in Objective-C (4th Edition) Beginning iOS 5 Development: Exploring the iOS SDK The iOS 5 Developer's Cookbook: Expanded Electronic Edition: Essentials and Advanced Recipes for iOS Programmers Learn Objective-C on the Mac: For OS X and iOS I've also purchased the following updated books but not yet read them. The Core iOS 6 Developer's Cookbook (4th edition Programming in Objective-C (5th Edition) I come from a Java and C# background with 15 years experience, I understand that many of the ways I would do things in these languages may not fit to the ObjC way of developing applications. Any guidance on the topic is very much appreciated.
