  How do you develop references for jobs? I have 6 years of programming experience spanning two jobs, but sadly I don't have a lot of people I can draw on as references. It's been several years since I left my last job, which was at a small company, and I've lost touch with the few people I knew there. I now work at another small company. I think I've gone as far as I can in my current position, and would like to look for greener pastures, but I can't exactly use my current boss as a reference, even though I have a very good repore with him. I'm sure he'd make a great reference down the road, but I'm afraid I'd insult him or jeopardize my current job by mentioning that I'm thinking of leaving and would like him to help me. I've applied to some jobs, and I have gotten several replies like, "Oh, you're exactly what we're looking for. Send us a couple references and we'll schedule an interview. Oh, no references? You must be a psychopath, nevermind." I've tried doing some small freelance work on the side, just so I can have a contact who can vouch for my work, but the competition for even small projects is pretty fierce and I can rarely devote adequate time to freelancing while holding a full time job. In addition, I often encounter a Catch-22 where a lot of freelancing jobs also require references. So how do programmers maintain existing references and develop new ones, especially while holding a full time job?

• Running The JVM From Within An MXML Component

  Thinking outside of the box here... What possible basic approaches could be taken in an effort to create a Flex component that could run Java? I know I can easily use flex to browse to or launch a Java app, but there are things I can only do if I can run the Java from WITHIN an MXML Component. I the strictest sense, I know it's not impossible (ie: if you had all the source code for flex and for the jvm), but what's the least impractical means to this end? Showcase your creativity.

• Check if TIFF file is complete

  I have a FileSystemWatcher monitoring a directory that receives TIF files from a scanning device. Its necessary to check if the scanning process is done and then read a multipage TIF file, otherwise, the FileSystemWatcher will raise the event before the file be fully scanned. I have something like: private void OnFileCreated(...) { while(IsFileLocked(path)) Thread.Sleep(time); // OK to read } This is what is happening: - Scanner creates the file - FileSystemWatcher detects the file, but its in use - Scanner reads the first page to the file - Scanner releases the file - My code leaves the while(FileInUse(path)) - My code reads the incomplete file (problem) - Scanner adds more pages to the file Let's say the scanner is scanning 100 pages, then, when "OK to read", the file will be incomplete (99 pages left). So, its necessary to know if the file is complete or not. Maybe waiting some time to see if the file is modified, but this time span can be up to hours, because the scanner can get idle scanning the same TIF. Other solution would be checking some flag in the TIF file that indicates that the file is not complete(I've looked for this but don't found anything).

  I have a problem with XIB Files and localizations (Xcode 4.3, Mac Os X 10.7.4) My application supports french and english localizations. For my test, i decided to change the languages and regions from "french" to "english" in system preferences. When i launch my application, it displays always old XIB files (french) et not the XIB files "attached" to my new localization ! ** I followed all the recommendations which i was able to find : i cleared all caches, clean up the project, ... and so on ! The problem is always here and persists. Can be that XCode4 has the other files to delete somewhere else ? is it possible to use another means to test my new localization ? If you are a idea, ... • How to detect VC++ 2008 redistributable?

  Is there a Registry setting that I can look for to determine whether or not the Visual C++ redistributable is installed, whether standalone or as part of Visual Studio 2008? I know that I could launch the VC++ 2008 redistributable installer and let it handle the detection, but it would look cleaner if I can check for it and not bother launching the installer if the redistributable is already on the system. It's no biggie if there is no setting to search for, as this is just for the preliminary installers that we have for the new version of our software. We won't need it for the new Windows Installer-based installers that we are working on that will replace the old tech ones and will use the merge modules.

Any ideas? The Application code works perfecty with any query so its not application code error but prolly some "super cool feature" from ODP.NET. Already tried to_number, to_whatever and same error always happens.

I am deploying the projects via the linux box by the cmd like so bin/standalone.sh -b [ipaddress] This works fine only when i am on the network, however it doesn't work when i'm outside the network or over the internet. How do i launch it so people can access it over the internet?   I've installed ruby-1.8.6-p383 with RVM. System ruby is 1.9.1_p378-1 I'm getting the wrong date from Date.today and DateTime.now when using ruby 1.8.. Question: How do I redirect all requests from that test URL to reroute to the actual domain? • Reorganizing development environment for single developer/small shop

  I have been developing for my company for approximately three years. We serve up a web portal using Microsoft .NET and MS SQL Server on DotNetNuke. I am going to leave my job full time at the end of April. I am leaving on good terms, and I really care about this company and the state of the web project. Because I haven't worked in a team environment in a long time, I have probably lost touch with what 'real' setups look like. When I leave, I predict the company will either find another developer to take over, or at least have developers work on a contractual basis. Because I have not worked with other developers, I am very concerned with leaving the company (and the developer they hire) with a jumbled mess. I'd like to believe I am a good developer and everything makes sense, but I have no way to tell. My question, is how do I set up the development environment, so the company and the next developer will have little trouble getting started? What would you as a developer like in place before working on a project you've never worked on? Here's some relevant information: There is a development server onsite and a production server offsite in a data center . There is a server where backups and source code (Sourcegear Vault) are stored. There is no formal documentation but there are comments in the code. The company budget is tight so free suggestions will help the best. I will be around after the end of April on a consulting basis so I can ask simple questions but I will not be available full time to train someone

• Django unit testing: South-migrated DB works in MySQL, throws duplicate PK error in PostGreSQL. Am I

  Hi folks, (Worth starting off with a disclaimer: I'm very new to PostGreSQL) I have a django site which involves a standard app/tests.py testing file. If I migrate the DB to MySQL (through South),, the tests all pass. However in PostGresQL, I'm getting the following error: IntegrityError: duplicate key value violates unique constraint "business_contact_pkey" Note this happens while unit testing only - the actual page runs fine in both MySQL & PostGresql. • How do I run JUnit tests from inside my java application?

  Is it possible to run JUnit tests from inside my java application? Are there test frameworks I can use (such as JUnit.jar?), or am I force to find the test files, invoke the methods and track the exceptions myself? The reason why I am asking is my application requires a lot of work to start launch (lots of dependencies and configurations, etc) and using an external testing tool (like JUnit Ant task) would require a lot of work to set up. It is easier to start the application and then inside the application run my tests. Is there an easy test framework that runs tests and output results from inside a java application or am I forced to write my own framework?

  I, know almost all of you at some point of your life as a programmer get to the point where you know (more or less) different technologies/languages/IDEs and a times come when you want to get things together and start using them once - more efficient and second - more closely to the real life situation where in fact just knowing Java, or some experience with Eclipse doesn't mean nothing, and what makes you a programmer worth something is the ability to work with the combination of 2 or more combinations. Having this in mind here is my question - what do you think is the optimal way of getting into Java+Eclipse+Spring3.1 world. I've read, and I've read a lot. I started writing real code but almost every step is discovering the wheel again and again, wondering how to do thing you know are some what trivial, but you've missed that one article where this topic was discussed and so on. I don't mind for paying for a good tutorial like for example, after a bit of research I decided that instead of losing a lot of time getting the different parts together I'd rather pay for the videos in http://knpuniversity.com/screencast/starting-in-symfony2-tutorial and save myself a lot of time (I hope) and get as fast as possible to writing a real code instead of wondering what do what and so on. But I find it much more difficult to find such sources of info especially when you want something more specific as me and that's the reason to ask this question. I know a lot of you go through the hard way, and I won't give up if I have to do the same, but to be honest I really hope to get post with good tutorials on the subject (paid or not) because in my situation time is literally money.   Ok, I have a generic TimeSlot model that deals with a start_at and an end_at for time spans. A couple models derive from this but I'm referring to one in this question: AppointmentBlock which is a collection of Appointments. I want to validate an AppointmentBlock such that no other AppointmentBlocks have been scheduled for a particular Employee in the same time frame. Since AppointmentBlock has a polymorphic association with TimeSlot, you have to access the AppointmentBlock's start_at and end_at through the TimeSlot like so: appt_block.time_slot.start_at This means that I need to have some kind of join in my :conditions for my find() method call. Here is my code so far: #inside my appointment_block.rb model validate :employee_not_double_booked def employee_not_double_booked unless self.employee_id # this find's condition is incorrect because I need to join time_slots to get access # to start_at and end_at. • Generate and download a text file in javascript

  All my research so far suggests this can't be done, but I'm hoping someone here has some cunning ideas. I have a form on a website which allows users to bulk upload lots of URLs to add to a list on the server. There's quite a lot of server-side processing to do on each URL, so to avoid timeouts and to display progress, I've implemented the upload using jQuery to submit the URLs one at a time using ajax. This is all working nicely. However, part of the processing on each URL is deduplicating it against the complete list. The ajax call returns a status indicating either a successful upload or a rejection due to duplication. As the upload progresses, I tell the user how many URLs have been rejected as duplicates (along with overall progress and ETA). The problem now is how to give the user a complete list of the failed duplicate URLs. I've kept them in an array in my jQuery, and would like the user to be able to click on a link on the form to download a text file containing those URLs. Is this possible just using client-side processing? The server-side processing basically handles a single keyword at a time. I'd rather not have to store the duplicates in a database table with some kind of session key which gets sent with every ajax call, and is then used at the end to generate the text file server-side (and then gets cleaned up some time later). I can see how to do this, but it seems very clunky and a bit 20th century.

• How do you verify that 2 copies of a VB 6 executable came from the same code base?

  I have a program under version control that has gone through multiple releases. A situation came up today where someone had somehow managed to point to an old copy of the program and thus was encountering bugs that have since been fixed. I'd like to go back and just delete all the old copies of the program (keeping them around is a company policy that dates from before version control was common and should no longer be necessary) but I need a way of verifying that I can generate the exact same executable that is better than saying "The old one came out of this commit so this one should be the same." My initial thought was to simply MD5 hash the executable, store the hash file in source control, and be done with it but I've come up against a problem which I can't even parse. It seems that every time the executable is generated (method: Open Project. File Make X.exe) it hashes differently. I've noticed that Visual Basic messes with files every time the project is opened in seemingly random ways but I didn't think that would make it into the executable, nor do I have any evidence that that is indeed what's happening. To try to guard against that I tried generating the executable multiple times within the same IDE session and checking the hashes but they continued to be different every time. So that's: Generate Executable Generate MD5 Checksum: md5sum X.exe > X.md5 Verify MD5 for current executable: md5sum -c X.md5 Generate New Executable Verify MD5 for new executable: md5sum -c X.md5 Fail verification because computed checksum doesn't match. I'm not understanding something about either MD5 or the way VB 6 is generating the executable but I'm also not married to the idea of using MD5. If there is a better way to verify that two executables are indeed the same then I'm all ears. Thanks in advance for your help!

  I am struggling with time zone support in Rails 3 beta and I would like to know if it is a bug or if I am doing something wrong. The same sequence of commands in rails 2.3.5 works perfectly. Any toughts? Should I report a ticket?

  Hello, I'm trying to use a custom event in my WxWidgets C++ application, like described here. In the constructor of my wxApp: Connect(wxID_ANY, wxCommandEventHandler(APP::OnMyEvent)); Then the function that should catch the event: void APP::OnMyEvent(wxCommandEvent& event) { exit(0); //testing } Finally, to test it: wxCommandEvent MyEvent(wxEVT_COMMAND_BUTTON_CLICKED); wxPostEvent(this, MyEvent); I launch the thing...but it seems that the event is not posted or not caught. Does someone understand this behaviour ?
