• Frameworks for targetting multiple environments

  What should drive the decision behind doing development upon one or more than one framework? For instance, an ERP is (mostly) run on a Windows station. It leverages full access to device's resources, like printers, barcode readers, fingerprint readers and the like. It's usually more responsive and easier do develop with. That being said, some parts of it must be accessed exclusively in self-service mode, by enterprise's customers, suppliers and partners. This could be accomplished with smartphones, tablets, or even desktops running a web browser. What are the economics behind that? Should two team be kept, each one doing work upon its own framework? Or the most permissive framework should be chosen? Should I care something other than HTML technologies? Should I consider native technology for each device?

• Remote Desktop advice

  Coming from Windows, so that is what my expectations are based on. I have a Ubuntu desktop edition instance running as a virtual machine on a server. I would like to use it as my primary open source dev environment but the VNC tools I have used don't seem to be as rich as "Remote Desktop Connection" in Windows. The two things that are missing for me: connecting/logging into a non-console user sessions dynamically resizing the graphical resolution based on the size of the remote desktop window device sharing (USB devices plugged into client shared with remote) Is there an appropriate client that I can run on Windows to connect to my ubuntu dev instance that provides these capabilities?

  OTN's new tech article is "Experimenting with Java Timers" by T. Lamine Ba. This article studies time—how Java handles timers and the scheduling of tasks. Java timers are utilities that let you execute threads or tasks at a predetermined future time, and these tasks can be repeated according to a set frequency. The article starts with a simple "Hello World" program in a web application that's composed of JavaServer Pages (JSP) and uses the model-control-view (MVC) design pattern. The IDE used in this article is NetBeans IDE 7.1, but you can use any IDE that supports Java. "Experimenting with Java Timers" demonstrates how to get started scheduling jobs with Java. • Defaulting internet requests to wlan0 when also connected to eth0

  I am trying to configure an Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition as a server. I currently have the DHCP server working through eth0. My problem is that I only have one Ethernet port, and am receiving Internet though a mobile hotspot on my phone through wlan0, and whenever I attempt to connect through wlan0 and eth0 I am unable to access the Internet through the server or the clients. When I disconnect from eth0 I then regain access. I have searched extensively for a solution, and have come up short. Any help is appreciated.

• NASCIO Award for NetBeans Platform Legislative Software

  Two days ago, 23 October 2012, the Kansas Legislative Information System and Services (KLISS) was awarded the 2012 NASCIO Award for Open Government at the NASCIO annual State IT Recognition awards. KLISS is developed by Propylon in partnership with the executive and legislative branches of the Kansas Government involving a complete overhaul of the Legislature's IT systems. This video gives an overview of the system: In other good news, Propylon has recently announced that it will work with the Indiana Legislative Services Agency to implement a complete Legislative Enterprise Architecture. • Where to start when digging into an existing J2EE codebase?

  I work for a company that produces enterprise applications to be used by schools and districts to manage all of their tests and standards data. Their existing application is written in J2EE and is very large. I personally am a seasoned PHP and Ruby = RoR developer and I have been asked to attempt to implement easily added but crucial features to an existing J2EE codebase. I am very familiar with Java SE and know the architecture of a web application well. What I am asking for is, will this suffice for the task ahead and what tips can you give me in digging into the code base and actually efficiently adding these new features? Is there anything important I need to know before beginning and what can I expect in terms of problems and issues coming from a Java SE, PHP, RoR background? Time isn't too much of an issue, I should have plenty of time to familiarize myself with J2EE.Please also note, syntax will not be a problem here.

  In bash at least, if and case blocks are closed like this: if some-expr then echo "hello world" fi case $some-var in [1-5]) do-a-thing ;; *) do-another-thing esac as opposed to the more typical close of end or endif/endcase. As far as I know, this rather funny convention is unique to shell scripting and I have never seen such an odd block terminator anywhere else. Sometimes things like this have an origin in another language (like Ruby's elsif coming from Perl), or a strange justification. Does this feature of shell scripting have a story behind it? Is it found in other languages?

• Ubuntu 12.04 Server monitor goes into sleep mode (no display) after fresh install

  For some reason I can boot and either use Ubuntu 12.04 server edition, or desktop version. I can live boot the disk, I can go through the installer, or even use the ubuntu alternate installer. But for some reason after the install completes and I reboot the monitor seems to go back into sleep mode and then never loads the command prompt. This is on an industrial adlink MXE-1300 PC. I've installed ubuntu server fine on other models of adlink machines but this one doesn't want to seem to play nice. To me it seems like if it was a video card issue than I could never even load the installer or run ubuntu in live mode. Any thoughts or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

  I am working on a photo sharing social platform like Flickr, Photobucket. To start off with I have half a million photos as of now. I want to convert all of these into a single format, compression ratio and use it as an original image. I will be storing original image, re-sized image according to layout and a thumbnail. I have started off with ruby, didn't find supporting libraries. I am considering python as it has a good image processing library and instagram is using it. I want some advise about how the image has to be processed while uploading, efficient way of storage whether database or a file system, image compressions, and precautions to be taken. I would be having profile pictures, do I need store them separately or along with the images? If I want to store the images on a file system, which file system should I use and also should I store the url or should I use any intermediate key value store like redis?

  I need to develop a programm that is going to read some information from a special USB device and access information via Web Socket (socket.io preferred). My client wants to deploy this app on Mac OS X, Windows, Android and iOS. I was looking for development softwares valid for both: Desktop and Mobile, but it is still not clear for me and that´s what I found. Unity - Looks very good but to create a native plugin for reading from the device it lloks like I need the PRO edition. Adobe Air - Looks good but I´m not sure if I can write Native Plugins for all wanted platforms. LiveCode - Still inmature (lots of bugs) and I don´t know if it is possible to write native plugins for my device. Is there any other good platform for my case? What´s your option?

• Best way to get elapsed time in miliseconds in windows

  I'm trying to do it using two FILETIMEs, casting them to ULONGLONGs, substracting the ULONGLONGs, and dividing the result by 10000. But it's pretty slow, and I want to know if there is a better way to do it.I use c++ with visual studio 2008 express edition.   as you may know very well, every individual related with software development is somehow related to the science or the activity that the program was made for, I am currently working as a programmer for a company that is dedicated to build enterprise software for ensurance business, before this job, I was working with a travel agency developing extra modules for the CRM they use (VTiger), so I can say I am related to ERP/CRM, the fact is, I would like to change this to another activity, like developing video games. I'd like to start developing games, by getting a job or making my own project, but: 1) I have no experience developing video games, is that an obstacle if I want to get a job? if is that so, how can I solve it? 2) if I want to make my own project I will need more people, like a graphic disigner or some others, isn't there a way to make the whole game by my own?

• In what ways can I test an image slideshow javascript code?

  I have a slideshow of images (and links) on a page. These images are part of a JSON response to a request sent after the page loads. The slideshow is set to play at an interval of 2 seconds. The slideshow can be paused, played over, and all other controls a normal slideshow would have. As a Rails dev, I proposed cucumber but the javascript guys in the team are not comfortable with ruby. I saw some cucumber for javascript libraries coming up, still in experimental stage. I checked out jasmine and related tutorials but all I could get from them is how I can carry out any internal functional testing such as credit-cart validation, etc. - which I think could actually be handled in unit testing? (Screw the research I did and) How should I go about testing this and similar components?
