• How to communicate with Telecom infrastructure using .NET

  I am currently writing some pretty gnarly C#/C++/Cli code to interface with Telecommunication equipement and GSM Mobile Networks for a couple of the major telecom here and abroad. GSM networks primarily use SS7 Signaling using a protocol called TCAP to send messages back and forth to Signaling Points within the network. The laws of Tcp/ip do not apply here :) I am very interested in hearing from others in this space specifically individuals using the .NET framework most likely using C# / C++. I have not come across any .NET libraries or tools to assist in this sort of development. Most of the software in this industry is "C" / Java based, as a result I have written tons of infrastructure .NET code using C# where possible and C++ / CLI to interface with hardware. Is anyone aware of any .NET language tools for this niche industry?

• Batch file crashes when double clicked, but passes from command prompt

  I have a batch file that was crashing when executing from windows explorer. I opened a command prompt and navigated to the file, but when I executed it there it did not crash. I identified the line that was crashing. • How can I receive messages using over http without MSMQ

  I need a reliable messaging framework that runs over http/https (due to client security requirements) and that doesn't use MSMQ (because some clients will use Windows XP Home). The clients only need to be able to receive messages, not send them. We already have a message queue on the server for each user, and the receivers have been getting messages by connecting to an HttpHandler on the server and getting a Stream from WebResponse.GetResponseStream() We keep this stream open, and pull messages off of it using Stream.Read(). This MOSTLY works, but Stream.Read() is a blocking call, and we can't reliably interrupt it. We need to be able to stop and start the receiver without losing messages, but the old stream often hangs around, even after we call Thread.Abort on its thread. Any suggestions?

• C# Dynamic Query Without A Database Model

  I have been searching the web for a solution to dynamic queries. I have found many different solutions (e.g. Linq to Sql, Dynamic Linq Expressions, Dynamic Query), but all of these solutions involve some sort of previous knowledge of the database (like a model in code). Maybe what I am asking is way off the deep end, but is there any possible way to dynamically query a database without a model? For example, a database has a Customers table with the following columns: CustomerID Name FavoriteColor I want to create a query as SELECT Name FROM Customers WHERE @0 = @1, where the two placeholders are populated dynamically. The resulting data does not tie to a model class and I would prefer to use some sort of framework to build the queries, not simple string concatenation. The System.Linq.Dynamic namespace came really close to fulfilling this request, but it uses a database model. I realize this is crazy, but I was just curious.

• Can Spring understand @Inject replacing Weld as a JSR-299 implementation?

  I have noticed from several web pages that apparently Spring 3.0 supports @Inject from JSR-330. As we would really like to use JSR-299 syntax for dependency injection in our libraries for both web apps and stand-alone applications, and have alternatives to Weld, it would be nice if Spring could do this. Being a novice to Spring, I tried downloading the Spring Framework distribution and put all jars on the Eclipse build path. No Inject annotation so my existing test project using Weld did not compile. Can this be done with Spring? What do I need to do to get it running? (I am aware that Guice eventually will support this too. It is only in SVN for now, and if there is an official Spring release which can, that would be better.)

  I have an ajax-enabled site that presents a lot of dynamic content by interpolating JSON values with HTML. This all works fine. BUT it means I have significant amounts of HTML all through my JavaScript. For example: var template = "<div>Foo: {bar}</div><div>Blah: {vtha}</div>"; template.interpolate({bar:"bar",blah:"vtha"}); I have cut this down a fair bit - some of my dynamic elements have quite a lot of HTML and a lot going on. I am using jQuery and I am building on Rails, so if there is something smart in either framework, that would be great. • Beginner Design pattern question (Web Services involved)

  Hi all ! I am a noob to web services world. I need to develop a login validator module and expose it as a service. I want it to be service independent, i.e I should have the option of exposing it as a SOAP service or REST service in the future. What pattern should I follow ? Sorry if I am unclear in my requirements, I can clarify as per need. Thanks !! Edit : I am using Eclipse as an IDE and Jersey libraries. I am not into any framework, simply using the MVC pattern. I find a lot of difference between SOAP ann REST methods, so I want my methods to be implementation independent - i.e I should be easily able to use my method through a SOAP or REST service call as per need. What should I do for maximum flexibility ?

• "Cannot use fixed local inside lambda expression"

  I have an XNA 3.0 project that compiled just fine in VS2008, but that gives compile errors in VS2010 (with XNA 4.0 CTP). The error: Cannot use fixed local 'depthPtr' inside an anonymous method, lambda expression, or query expression depthPtr is a fixed float* into an array, that is used inside a Parallel.For lambda expression from System.Threading. As I said, this compiled and ran just fine on VS2008, but it does not on VS2010, even when targeting .NET 3.5. Has this changed in .NET 4.0, and even so, shouldn't it still compile when I choose .NET 3.5 as the target framework? Searching for the term "Cannot use fixed local" yields exactly one (useless) result, both in Google and Bing. If this has changed, what is the reason for this? I can imagine capturing a fixed pointer-type in a closure could get a bit weird, is that why? So I'm guessing this is bad practice? And before anyone asks: no, the use of pointers is not absolutely critical here. I would still like to know though :)

User clicks something in view 2. this is passed on to controller to manage 3. controller makes some changes in Model 4. Model calls method on view which has the logic to refresh UI Questions around these: Q1) Can controller also modify View or Model only updates View? Q2) When screen loads for the first time, there is no Model change. Then, who fetches data from model and populates view? View directly calls Model and populates itself OR controller gets data and passes to view method OR some dummy event is raised at Model which updates View?

I am using a third party library for the charts, the database and data extraction layer have already been coded. Can you advise on a good desktop Framework to use within Eclipse to provide a 'professional' looking GUI with minimum coding required (This is just a prototype). Further can anyone advise an effective method to port this application to a web server so users could access remotely? I have limited experience with GWT, are their more suitable alternatives? • Suggestions for performance improvement surrounding sending email notifications?

  It takes around a couple of seconds for my app to execute the code to send an email right now on a test server with nothing much else running. Not sure if this is typical/expected. I'm also using the php framework Kohana's email helper and not php's mail directly out of convenience if that matters. Is it always just better to schedule a cron job to send emails every 5 min or so? Or should I be able to send emails immediately and I'm just not doing something right? What the script does is insert a row into the db and notifies the relevant group that the row was created. The groups are usually < 20 people so I just do a loop calling Kohana's email helper each time for each member of the group.

• ctypes import not working on python 2.5

  Hi, I am trying to import ctypes, and I am using Python 2.5.5 installed using macports (on Mac OS X 10.6). I get an error saying "ImportError: No module named _ctypes" (see details below). As I understand it ctypes is supposed to come preinstalled for python 2.5. • Error after switching from .NET 3.5 to 4

  Application.Run(new Main()); This line gives TypeInitializationException was unhandled after I switched from 3.5 to 4 framework. Why is this? Edit: Forgot to mention this is a Winforms C# application. Okay so I have SQLite .NET referenced. I tried this on a project created on .NET 4 by default and didn't give me any error so I assumed it wasn't about SQLite .NET http://sqlite.phxsoftware.com/ Please note v2.0.50727 this is the runtime version of the DLL which seems to be causing the problem. • Should I learn Haskell or F# if I already know OCaml?

  I am wondering if I should continue to learn OCaml or switch to F# or Haskell. Here are the criteria I am most interested in: Longevity Which language will last longer? I don't want to learn something that might be abandoned in a couple years by users and developers. Will Inria, Microsoft, University of Glasgow continue to support their respective compilers for the long run? Practicality Articles like this make me afraid to use Haskell. A hash table is the best structure for fast retrieval. Haskell proponents in there suggest using Data.Map which is a binary tree. I don't like being tied to a bulky .NET framework unless the benefits are large. I want to be able to develop more than just parsers and math programs. Well Designed I like my languages to be consistent. Please support your opinion with logical arguments and citations from articles. Thank you.

• API verbs for an interruptible operation

  I have a long running task as part of my application. The task can be started, paused, resumed, and cancelled. I'm trying to find the best interface for these operations. Two seem clear: Pause and Cancel. This leaves the start and resume operations. I could include both Start and Resume. This has the downside of either requiring the API consumer to check the state before starting/resuming the operation to call the right method, or making the methods aliases of each other. I'm thinking I should include either Start or Resume, but I don't know which one is the most appropriate. Does anyone have any examples in the .NET Framework of such behavior? I prefer to follow established patterns whenever they are available.

  Hi there, i have a problem understanding how this could/should be solved. I have two functions. In the first function ( I call it loadData() ) I'm doing an asyncronous request to the server to load some data. In the second function ( saveData() ) I'm also doing an asyn request to the server to write some data. In the callback of this request I'm callin loadData() to refresh the data. Now the problem: In the saveData() function I want to wait for loadData() to be finished bevore I show a dialog (like alert('Data saved')) I guess this is a common problem, but I couldn't find the solution for it (if there is one..) A solution would be to make the requests syncronous, but the framework I'm using doesn't offer that and I hope there's a better solution.. Thanks to all!

Is it possible using the Windows API, to create a textfield that lets me offset characters by exact pixels? if so - how? for example, I would like to place two O letters on top of each other, such that they form something like an 8 ? context is an application for a language where most of the glyphs are written left to right, but sometimes some of the glyphs are stacket on top of each other. Windows API because the framework we're using already uses the Windows API for the whole GUI. Thanks!

• WCF interoperability with WSDL proxy and performance consideration advise.

  I'm essentially writing a broker service. The requirement is that I write an API that acts as an intermediary broker between our in-house developed services and a 3rd party provided API. The intention being that my API abstract the actual communication with the 3rd party API from our internal systems. The architect on the project chose WCF as the communication framework. The problem is that 70 percent of our subscriber applications are written in .Net 2 and as such have no access to the class libraries required to implement a WCF proxy. The end result being that our proxy classes are loosely based on the code auto generated by the WSDL tool as opposed to the SvcUtil tool. My question is, although I have no issues implementing the required proxy classes using basicHttp as the actual binding and using the WSDL tool, are there any special considerations that I need to take into account in this scenario? I.E proxy optimizations and the like. Thanks in advance.

It appears to me that in Windows Identity Foundation, once a user is logged in, the claims are basically strings of information that describe the user. With the old role-based authentication, I could say that a user is or is not a member of a given group, but with claims-based authentication, I can now have strings of information that describe a user. "This user is female". This user was born on "July 6, 1975". "This user logged in using a USB key". Is it the essence of claims-based authentication,that I have strings of information about the user given to the application by the framework?

  Hello, I have a python project that calls a c++ dll that calls a c# dll. I wanted all to run without installing visual studio 2008. I allready made the c++ part by installing Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) and I also installed .net framework 3.5.   In my project I have it set up so that all the tables in the DB has the property "id" and then I have the entity objects inherit from the EntityBase class using a repository pattern. I then set the inheritance modifier for "id" property in the dbml file o/r designer to "overrides" Public MustInherit Class EntityBase MustOverride Property id() As Integer End Class Public MustInherit Class RepositoryBase(Of T As EntityBase) Protected _Db As New DataClasses1DataContext Public Function GetById(ByVal Id As Integer) As T Return (From a In _Db.GetTable(Of T)() Where a.id = Id).SingleOrDefault End Function End Class Partial Public Class Entity1 Inherits EntityBase End Class Public Class TestRepository Inherits RepositoryBase(Of Entity1) End Class the line Return (From a In _Db.GetTable(Of T)() Where a.id = Id).SingleOrDefault however produces the error "Class member EntityBase.id is unmapped" when i use VS 2010 using the 4.0 framework but I never received that error with the old one.
