• PHP mcrypt usage class?

  I'm pretty new at this. Tried to make sense of the manual page for mcrypt at PHP.net when I thought a good tutorial would do a better job. So I searched yet without anything substantial. I also tried one of the examples of using mcrypt to perform the encryption and decryption with 2 functions, but it gives a warning of "Size of key is too large for this algorithm". Can anyone please write me a two-way class to do the encryption / decryption using mcrypt so I can make sense of the library? Thanks!

• A report writer for non-programmers?

  Hello, we are wanting for users to be able to write their own reports in our application. It is a web application. We don't care if they must download an application in order to create reports, but we need for them to be able to print off reports from the web in PDF format or similar. The report writer is to be used by non-programmers, or at best very light programmers(like the ones that make VBA macros and such). (the writer is not a core part of the program though. So if there is a learning curve, then that is acceptable to a certain extent) We were looking at Crystal Reports but it seems like it'll cost $7000 which is just way too much for right now(though our system is very flexible so could support it eventually). We are also looking at Fast Reports which seems pretty promising, but I'm not sure the report writer would be easy for non-programmers to grasp. Can someone recommend a good report writer for non programmers that won't break the bank?

• ExceptionPolicy.HandleException does not install Event Source for Logging in Registry if XBAP run ou

  I am using the Logging Application Block (of Microsoft Enterprise Library) to log exceptions in the Event Viewer that occur in my WPF XBAP application. If I run the XBAP in the debugger from Visual Studio, an Event Source entry for my application is automatically created in the Registry at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Application\MyApp This occurs at the point ExceptionPolicy.HandleException() is called. However, if I run the XBAP outside of the IDE directly from the file system or from its published location, the Registry entry isn't added. Therefore, no logging takes place. I can only assume this is a security issue with running XBAP applications and they do not have access to write to the Registry. Is this a setting within my project? Any idea on why this might be happening? Any help much appreciated.

But my consoleapp crashs when i call the cgi script. So i did a little debuging and write a text file after some actions i do in my .net program. The result was that my programm crash everytime i'd like to open a access mdb file. It told me that i need the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). But i cant belive this message because my .net consoleapp runs without errors if i start it from my own. So can anybody give me some advise how i can call my .net consol ab through a webscript. I'm happy for every advise So it don't have to be a solution using a cgi script. Regards, Nico

  Hi, I have a telerik grid which is performing operations like searching,sorting,filtering etc. To make customers happy, we put this control in an ajax panel for seamless experience. Now, we added a new functionality to the grid where the customer can download the entire row information as a csv file. As the response is a file, ajax panel is trying to parse the output and throwing the following exception: Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: The message received from the server could not be parsed. Common causes for this error are when the response is modified by calls to Response.Write(), response filters, HttpModules, or server trace is enabled. Details: Error parsing near '?'. Could you please help me in having both functionalities( Ajax and Download) in place without any error?? Thanks, Mahesh

• Preserving DataRowState when serializing DataSet using DataContractSerializer

  For various reasons I am having to send a typed dataset to a WCF service endpoint. This works fine except that upon Deserializing, the RowState of each row in each DataTable is set to 'Added', regardless of what they were on the client. If I write the serialized stream out to a file, I see that the RowState is not part of the Serialized data. How can I add this so that I can preserve the RowState across service boundaries? Not that I think it matters, but the client process is running .net 3.5 while the service process is running .net 4.0

• Objective-C and Android

  I've just finished a relatively large project for the Android, and it's left a bitter taste in my mouth with the knowledge that it will never run on one of the most ubiquitous handsets this side of the solar system (the one by that fruity little club). So, for my next project, I want to write it in a way that makes most of the components easily transportable between the iPhone and Android platforms. The way I'm thinking of doing this is by coding most of it in Objective-C, and then adding the platform-specific parts in more Objective-C and Java respectively. On the Android side, this will require using the the NDK. My knowledge of C is good, but my knowledge of Objective-C is close to zero, and I have no desire to learn C++. How sane is the approach above, and is there a better one? Is there any way I can code in Java and still reach the un-hacked iPhone market? And how likely is it that the people I know (iPhone users) will have an Android phone by next year?

  I have a list of Filemaker database names Each DB name has a list of field/attribute pairs associated with it I have a windows form application in C# 4.0 (vs2010) that wants to use the above data I would like to maintain the list either in the Visual Studio settings page, or in one of the standard visual studio settings files using the standard .NET settings calls I would like to avoid writing my own custom settings, xml, xds (to avoid the "Could not find schema information for the element/attribute " errors) I just have a slightly complicated INI file! I don't want to complicate my life! Do any easy solutions exist? Unless someone has a brighter idea, I am simply going to write string settings with names that indicate it's a FM DB (e.g. "fmdbAddresses"), and values that concat my field/attribute pairs (e.g. "gUserResult=skipField|gAddressID=convertToInt|gAddressID=uniqueIx")

  The text-based Smart Game Format has become the sole file format for exchanging Go game records by now. I stared with disbelieve that there are almost no parsers available. Google yielded a few results in antique Java and Python, but no modern implementations. I am curious if I have to write my own parser. Do you know of a modern implementation in C# or Java? In case there really are no parsers available, how should I implement one? Are there general guidelines or tools (in a C# environment) I should know of? • Read XML Files using LINQ to XML and Extension Methods

  In previous blog posts I have discussed how to use XML files to store data in your applications. I showed you how to read those XML files from your project and get XML from a WCF service. One of the problems with reading XML files is when elements or attributes are missing. If you try to read that missing data, then a null value is returned. This can cause a problem if you are trying to load that data into an object and a null is read. This blog post will show you how to create extension methods to detect null values and return valid values to load into your object. The XML Data An XML data file called Product.xml is located in the \Xml folder of the Silverlight sample project for this blog post. This XML file contains several rows of product data that will be used in each of the samples for this post. Each row has 4 attributes; namely ProductId, ProductName, IntroductionDate and Price. <Products>  <Product ProductId="1"           ProductName="Haystack Code Generator for .NET"           IntroductionDate="07/01/2010"  Price="799" />  <Product ProductId="2"           ProductName="ASP.Net Jumpstart Samples"           IntroductionDate="05/24/2005"  Price="0" />  ...  ...</Products> The Product Class Just as you create an Entity class to map each column in a table to a property in a class, you should do the same for an XML file too. In this case you will create a Product class with properties for each of the attributes in each element of product data. You can see this class in the sample you download for this blog post. Reading Data When using LINQ to XML you call the Load method of the XElement class to load the XML file. Once the XML file has been loaded, you write a LINQ query to iterate over the “Product” Descendants in the XML file. The “select” portion of the LINQ query creates a new Product object for each row in the XML file. You retrieve each attribute by passing each attribute name to the Attribute() method and retrieving the data from the “Value” property. The Value property will return a null if there is no data, or will return the string value of the attribute. If you have any missing attributes in any of the rows in the XML file, or if the data in the ProductId or IntroductionDate is not of the appropriate type, then this code will fail! The reason? There is no built-in check to ensure that the correct type of data is contained in the XML file. This is where extension methods can come in real handy. Using Extension Methods Instead of using the Convert class to perform type conversions as you just saw, create a set of extension methods attached to the XAttribute class. In the code listing below is a class named XmlExtensionMethods. This listing just shows a couple of the available methods such as GetAsString and GetAsInteger. These methods are just like any other method you would write except when you pass in the parameter you prefix the type with the keyword “this”. This lets the compiler know that it should add this method to the class specified in the parameter. public static class XmlExtensionMethods{  public static string GetAsString(this XAttribute attr)  {    string ret = string.Empty;     if (attr != null && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(attr.Value))    {      ret = attr.Value;    }     return ret;  }   public static int GetAsInteger(this XAttribute attr)  {    int ret = 0;    int value = 0;     if (attr != null && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(attr.Value))    {      if(int.TryParse(attr.Value, out value))        ret = value;    }     return ret;  }   ...  ...} Each of the methods in the XmlExtensionMethods class should inspect the XAttribute to ensure it is not null and that the value in the attribute is not null. If the value is null, then a default value will be returned such as an empty string or a 0 for a numeric value. Summary Extension methods are a great way to simplify your code and provide protection to ensure problems do not occur when reading data. You will probably want to create more extension methods to handle XElement objects as well for when you use element-based XML. Feel free to extend these extension methods to accept a parameter which would be the default value if a null value is detected, or any other parameters you wish. • Writing data over RxTx using usbserial?

  I'm using the RxTx library over usbserial on a Linux distro. The RxTx lib seems to behave quite differently (in a bad way) than how it works over serial. One of my biggest problems is that the RxTx SerialPortEvent.OUTPUT_BUFFER_EMPTY does not work on linux over usbserial. How do I know when I should write to the stream? Any indicators I might have missed? So far my experience with writing and reading concurrently have not been great. Does anyone know if I should lock the DATA_AVAILABLE handler from being invoked while I'm writing on the stream? Or RxTx accepts concurrent read/writes? Thanks in advance

• Why use Python interactive mode?

  When I first started reading about Python, all of the tutorials have you use Python's Interactive Mode. It is difficult to save, write long programs, or edit your existing lines (for me at least). It seems like a far more difficult way of writing Python code than opening up a code.py file and running the interpreter on that file. python code.py I am coming from a Java background, so I have ingrained expectations of writing and compiling files for programs. I also know that a feature would not be so prominent in Python documentation if it were not somehow useful. So what am I missing?

• What is the fastest way to send 100,000 HTTP requests in Python?

  Hello, I am opening a file which has 100,000 url's. I need to send an http request to each url and print the status code. I am using Python 2.6, and so far looked at the many confusing ways Python implements threading/concurrency. I have even looked at the python concurrence library, but cannot figure out how to write this program correctly. Has anyone come across a similar problem? I guess generally I need to know how to perform thousands of tasks in Python as fast as possible - I suppose that means 'concurrently'. Thank you, Igor

  When I print a webpage from Internet Explorer it will automatically add a header and footer including the website title, URL, date, and page number. Is it possible to hide the header and footer programatically using Javascript or CSS? Requirements: works in IE 6 (no other browser support necessary as its for an Intranet) may use ActiveX, Java Applet, Javascript, CSS preferably not something that the user needs to install (eg. http://www.meadroid.com/scriptx). feel free to list other third party available plug-ins though as I think this may be the only option don't require the user to manually update their browser settings don't render the pages as PDF or Word document or any other format don't write to the registry (security prevents this) Thanks

• How to set up hibernate to use Glassfish connection pool?

  I have set up a connection pool in Glassfish with a jndi resource for it also setup. I am stumped on how to configure hibernate to go get it. I have come across alot of write ups to configure it to use C3P0 connection pool. Well I am lost. I found that I need to set: hibernate.connection.datasource hibernate.jndi.url hibernate.jndi.class hibernate.connection.username hibernate.connection.password Would datasource be the same as the hibernate.connection.datasource set in the connection pool? What would hibernate.jndi.class be? Are hibernate.connection.username and hibernate.connection.password for the connection to the database or to the appserver? I assume this is to the database, but why do I need them since that is all set in the appserver?

  As software developers we all know that motivation matters. Without it we could just stare into the monitor all day long and do nothing. There are some tricks to get yourself motivated like talking to people or doing the fun part of the project, but they do not always work. In the mean time I started to notice that I am most productive when I could see the person who is appreciating my work. The user, who is using the software and enjoying it. Because if there's none, what's the point of writing this code? So I was wondering, what makes you be at your top, is it the users, your fellow coders or maybe the money you get? PS. I know there's quite a few questions about motivation but they all about overcoming current situation. What I want to hear is what makes you come to the office every day, what you enjoy the most in your job, what makes you want to write this code and do it as fast as you possible could.

• Getting into a technology which requires experience when you have no experience

  It seems that Sharepoint is a technology which is very hard to get into. All the jobs in this tech require experience in working with it (Eg 2 years development experience in MOSS). If I wanted to get into this - but had no job that used the tech, how can I get experience in it to get an experienced job? Jobs state you need "2 years professional experience in MOSS 2007" but then if you have never done it, you won't get the job. The only possible way is you will be doing this at home and not in a team, but if you work in the mean time, that will negate this (it's not like teamworking is tech specific). Many people think if you decide to make a project at home you're just going to play about aimlessly rather than work to specs (where as in my current situation it's vice versa) but if you're dedicated, like me, you would write them - just not with the same presentation. Would employers treat experience at home as professional experience? Biztalk is another prime example of this. Thanks

  I'm using flash to draw objects, then I export them and use them from flex, and I'm a beginner in flash. I'm trying to do the override a method from the MovieClip I created. The method I'm trying to override is stop() method. I didn't write a single line of code, my movie clip is created using entirely the flash interface. I figured out how to add actions to the movie clip when a frame is reached but I'm stucked now when I'm trying to override a MovieClip method.

  Hi all, Using Wix3, its trivial to ensure that a windows service being installed is given a dependency on a service that is already installed on the target machine, but I need to do the opposite - i.e. as part of my install I need to modify the service dependencies of an existing service (i.e. already installed on the target machine), to ensure that that service is dependent on the service I am installing. Is there a simple way to do this using WiX? or will I need to write a custom action? Many thanks, Paul

• How to detect non-graceful disconnect of Twisted on Linux?

  I wrote a server based on Twisted, and I encountered a problem, some of the clients are disconnected not gracefully. For example, the user pulls out the network cable. For a while, the client on Windows is disconnected (the connectionLost is called, and it is also written in Twisted). And on the Linux server side, my connectionLost of twisted is never triggered. Even it try to writes data to client, but the connection is lost. Why Twisted can't detect those non-graceful disconnection (even write data to client) on Linux? How to makes Twisted detect non-graceful disconnections? Because the feature Twisted can't detect non-graceful, I have lots of zombie user on my server. Thanks. Victor Lin.

• MSSQL2008: DTC Transaction - Internal abort

  Hi all, I write a small own replication - a trigger which fires an DTC INSERT to another server (one reason for my own "replication": while trigger is running it calculates some data, another: it works from an express version to an express version). When I do the initial insert from the same Host with the windows authentification it works fine. But there is a webserver on another host, which uses the sqlserver login (for testing sa). When this Host do the initial insert I get a Internal abort after the entlisting and creating phase in the DTCTransaction EventClass (Profiler). The magic is: When I first fire it from the same Host with the windows authentification, I can fire it from the webserver and it works fine. But I just have to wait some minutes and it won't work. Where is my error in reasoning... Thanks!
