I see the code in the web page...   • Useful training courses that aren't specific to a single technology

    I have possibly the best problem in the world. I have about £1600 left in a training budget and I need to find something to spend it on. I can spend it on anything that could be considered training. Books, courses, conferences, etc. I would like to find a course that would benifit a software developer but is not about learning a specific programming technology. I don't really want to spend it on a technical training course. These topics are usually best learned with a good book and some trial and error. I have also already been on a general business/management training course and a PRINCE2 project management course. I am currently working on a project on my own so am responsible for communicating with the client, requirements gathering, project management, etc., as well as the coding. What training have you found useful outside the usual technical stuff? Has anyone done any business analysis courses? What were they like? Are there any courses on some of the practicalities of working with software, e.g. automated test and deployment strategies, handling technical support? I would prefer a course in the UK but I can travel if necessary.

  • Technology and language for a stable Digital Audio Workstation development

    Hi, I'm designing a cross platform (Windows/Linux/OS X) application, something like a digital audio workstation. I'd like to create a software where users have a fully featured sequencer (multiple tracks with automation) and where it is possible to create instruments using a visual language (as Pure Data/Max MSP). Ehm... I know that I've already posted a question about a related issue... But in order to decide which technology I should use, I think I'd better to make more investigation. I'm a quite experted user of audio trackers (Renoise, Protracker,...) and sequencers (FL Studio, Cubase 5), but I didn't ever try to develop even a basic audio tracker. I know just the basic theory of mixing sound and know how basically a DSP works. My questions are: Where I can find a good tutorial/guide/book about this issue? Do you think using C# (with NAudio) could dramatically reduce performance? I know C++ would be the best choice, but I find C# so elegant and easy to build and port, while C++ is so powerful and fast, but there are too #define and bad things for my taste! ;-) Thank you.

  • Internet Explorer 8 + Deflate

    I have a very weird problem.. I really do hope someone has an answer because I wouldn't know where else to ask. I am writing a cgi application in C++ which is executed by Apache and outputs HTML code. I am compressing the HTML output myself - from within my C++ application - since my web host doesn't support mod_deflate for some reason. I tested this with Firefox 2, Firefox 3, Opera 9, Opera 10, Google Chrome, Safari, IE6, IE7, IE8, even wget.. It works with ANYTHING except IE8. IE8 just says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", with no information whatsoever. I know it's because of the compression only because it works if I disable it. Do you know what I'm doing wrong?     What I really want to do is allow the 'www-data' user to have the ability to launch php-cgi as another user. I just want to make sure that I fully understand the security implications. The server should support a shared hosting environment where various (possibly untrusted) users have chroot'ed FTP access to the server to store their HTML and PHP files. Then, since PHP scripts can be malicious and read/write others' files, I'd like to ensure that each users' PHP scripts run with the same user permissions for that user (instead of running as www-data). Long story short, I have added the following line to my /etc/sudoers file, and I wanted to run it past the community as a sanity check: www-data ALL = (%www-data) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/php-cgi This line should only allow www-data to run a command like this (without a password prompt): sudo -u some_user /usr/bin/php-cgi ...where some_user is a user in the group www-data. What are the security implications of this?     When I enable suEXEC by following the tutorial here, I am able to get PHP to run over Apache in cgi mode, but when I start trying to use suEXEC I get a 403, and the following error appears in the error log "client denied by server configuration". They are understandably more geared toward purely browser-based applications.   • Technology stack for very frequent gps data collection

    I am working on a project that involves gps data collection from many users (say 1000) every second (while they move). I am planning on using a dedicated database instance on EC2 with the mysql persistent block storage and run a ruby on rails application with nginx frontend. I haven't worked on such data collection application before. Am I missing something here? I will have a another instance which will act as application server and use the data from the same EBS. If anybody has dealt with such a system before, Any advise would be much appreciated?
