  • Question about migrating from ASP .NET User Controls to .NET 3.5 Master Page technology

    When migrating from an ASP .NET user control -based page with a header, footer, and menu to a Master Page using the same HTML mark-up, is it normal for CSS or javascript behaviors to change slightly? In particular, the submenu bar text now appears run together (which looks like a CSS symptom) and the graphics on the line above it appear to have an incorrect z-order. (The menu operation is javascript-based.) (I tried to paste images here but couldn't.) Also, the site is very large and we've not been given permission to redo the menu for the entire site. This is a forward-only migration. (Because I know that someone will ask.) Assuming that there are no changes in scope, what are the things that I should check? Thanks! Jim

Where does core JAVA fits in here. i was thinking of perhaps learning python as i know i have to learn Python only not its variations SO please guide me one thing which can solve my basic purpose of using ready made libraries of AI If i can do that with JSP then i will start with that. But i need to learn all of them then its better if can start learning python. I have 5 months to finish webiste.   • What would you recommend for a large-scale Java data grid technology: Terracotta, GigaSpaces, Cohere

    I've been reading up on so-called "data grid" solutions for the Java platform including Terracotta, GigaSpaces and Coherence. I was wondering if anyone has real-world experience working any of these tools and could share their experience. I'm also really curious to know what scale of deployment people have worked with: are we talking 2-4 node clusters or have you worked with anything significantly larger than that? I'm attracted to Terracotta because of its "drop in" support for Hibernate and Spring, both of which we use heavily. I also like the idea of how it decorates bytecode based on configuration and doesn't require you to program against a "grid API." I'm not aware of any advantages to tools which use the approach of an explicit API but would love to hear about them if they do in fact exist. :) I've also spent time reading about memcached but am more interested in hearing feedback on these three specific solutions. I would be curious to hear how they measure up against memcached in the event someone has used both.

  • Special technology needed for browser based chat?

    On this post, I read about the usage of XMPP. Is this sort of thing necessary, and more importantly, my main question expanded: Can a chat server and client be built efficiently using only standard HTTP and browser technologies (such as PHP and JS, or RoR and JS, etc)? Or, is it best to stick with old protocols like XMPP find a way to integrate them with my application? I looked into CampFire via LiveHTTPHeaders and Firebug for about 5 minutes, and it appears to use Ajax to send a request which is never answered until another chat happens. Is this just CampFire opening a new thread on the server to listen for an update and then returning a response to the request when the thread hears an update? I noticed that they're requesting on a specific port (8043 if memory serves me) which makes me think that they're doing something more complex than just what I mentioned. Also, the URL requested started with /tcp/ which I found interesting. Note: I don't expect to ever have more than 150 users live-chatting in all the rooms combined at the same time. I understand that if I was building a hosted pay for chat service like CampFire with thousands of concurrent users, it would behoove me to invest time in researching special technologies vs trying to reinvent the wheel in a simple way in my app. Also, if you're going to do it with server polling, how often would you personally poll to maximize response without slamming the server?

    Hi, I have a theoretical question about the .net framework. As I see it Microsoft gave us bunch of technologies for different layers. We have the ADO.NET and with the more improved Entity Framework for Data Access. And ASP.NET for WEB UI. And even WCF for Facade and SOA. But what in the middle, what do we have for the Business Layer? Is it just Referenced DLLs? How do we deal with the Application Pulling this days? I remember using COM+ 10 yeas ago because the IIS couldn't handle the pressure. Is Spring.Net is the best option available for injection? Thanks, Ronny

  • Why does my CGI script keep redirecting links to localhost?

    Visit this page http://online-file-sharing.net/tos.html and click one of the bottom footer links. It redirects you to your localhost in the address bar. I have no idea why it does this. When I point my browser directly to the CGI file it works but it brings me to my localhost again. I'm hosting this website on my own server, which is this computer, and using XAMPP if this information helps. I'm also using DynDNS as my nameservers. I hope you can give me some insight.

    Hey, I want to write a little program that transforms my TeX files into HTML. I want to parse the documents and turn the macros (the build-in and of course my own) into HTML pieces. Here are my requirements: predefined rules (e.g. begin{itemize} \item text \end{itemize} = <br> <p>text </p> <br/>) defining own CSS style ability to convert formulars (extract the formulars, load them in an imagecreator and then save the jpg/png) easy to maintain and concise I know there are several technologies out there, but I don't exactly know which is the best for me. Here are the technologies which flow into my mind Ruby (I/O is easy, formular loading via webrat), XML XSLT (I don't think that I need just overhead) perl (there are many libs out there but I'm not quite familiar with it) bash (I worked with sed and was surprised how easy it was to work with regular expressions) latex2html ... (these converters won't work for me and they don't give me freedom in parsing) Any suggestions, hints and comments are welcome. Thanks for your time, folks.

    Hello, i would like to ask you for an advice. I'm currently developing application in Spring consisting of Spring CRUD application as backend, SpringMVC application as tool for management and third part is where my problem lies as I need have application that renders 3d globe which is fed by data from backend from a data set selected by user (user may switch those at will). It has to be web application (though I would prefer not to implement this in flash/flex), composed of two main parts - main part is classic web GUI where user makes his choices and second part is 3d globe which renders the globe with selected set of data visualised. My question is, what do you think is the best option to implement this? Would be SpringMVC framework usable for this kind of application? I will be gratefull for any leads or directions, thank you.

    I am attempting to design and build a website for my friends band. There is minimal content to be included such as bio,news,enbemdded Audio/Visual material. My web dev expertise is average. I'm basicaly looking for inspiration, I was edging towards embedding a silverlight deepzoom xap object to add some visual stimulation, perhaps by featuring a high res photo of the bandshardware/equipment which zooms when mouseover occurs. Does anyone have any cool ideas for a central feature for this site, and which way to approact it in terms of technique (js,css,silverlight etc) If anyone has any immediate ideas which they think would be cool then I am eager to hear them! Also if anyone can link me to any cool band sites they have come across recently I would be greatful,nothing too complicated though please I will be doing all the work myself.     Looking for another application/technology: A number of years ago, I read about a novel way to authenticate and log on to a laptop. The user simply had to hold the laptop in the air and execute a simple series of tilts and flips to the laptop. By logging accelerometer data, this creates a unique signature for the user. Even if an attacker watched and repeated the exact same motions, the attacker could not replicate the user's movements closely enough. I am looking for information about this technology again, but I can't find anything. It may have been an actual feature on a laptop, or it may have just been a research project. I think I read about it in a magazine like Wired. Does anyone have more information about authentication via unique accelerometer signatures?     Hi, I have inherited a web project that is perl based and I'm attempting to set up a local testing server so changes can be made internally to the project. The server architecture Ubuntu 9.10 php 5.2.10 mysql 5.1.37 perl 5.10.0-24ubuntu4 All the dependent modules and packages are installed such as DateTime.pm, TemplateToolkit.pm but running the application throws the following error message: Can't locate object method "new" via package "Template" (perhaps you forgot to load "Template"?) at ../lib//KPS/TemplateToolkit.pm line 51 The code block that this refers to is: sub new { return Template->new( INCLUDE_PATH => $KPS::Config::templatepath, ABSOLUTE => 1, DEBUG => 1, ); } If anybody is able to shed any light on this or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.     So I'm using a basic formmail script. Within the script I'm using a redirect variable. The value of the redirect is something like,"http://www.mysite.com/NewOLS_GCUK_EN/bling.aspx?BC=GCUK&IBC=CSEE&SIBC=CSEE" When the redirect action happens however, the url appears in the browser as: http://www.mysite.com/NewOLS_GCUK_EN/bling.aspx?BC=GCUK&amp;IBC=CSEE&amp;SIBC=CSEE you can see the &'s are replaced with "& a m p ;" is there any way to fix this?   • http/html/ajax: show result before site is completely processed

    hi! I am looking for a way to show in a webapp in front of a task a wait-message and after it hide the message. The task is running a longer time. I dont know if it is possible at all. The problem is, so far I can see, that the site will be returned to the users browser AFTER the task is completed because the task is part of the site as a inline code replaces by the webserver interpreter (no matter if php, perl or whatever). The only solution I can imagine is to parallel the task with threads or processes and requery the state with ajax in the website. Any idea to do it less complex? Thanks for help! regards chris
