• Auditing in Entity Framework.

  After going through Entity Framework I have a couple of questions on implementing auditing in Entity Framework. I want to store each column values that is created or updated to a different audit table. Rightnow I am calling SaveChanges(false) to save the records in the DB(still the changes in context is not reset). Then get the added | modified records and loop through the GetObjectStateEntries.   I let a user reconfigure the location of a set of rows in a table by giving them ability to move them up and down. The changes are done by swapping nodes in the DOM. After the user has moved rows around, when I do a view source, I see the HTML in the original state (before the user made any changes). Can someone explain why that is? My understanding was when we do any DOM operations, the underlying HTML will be changed as well. EDIT: Does that mean on the server side, when attempt to get the state after user's changes, I will be able to get what I need? I am using C#/ASP.NET. Could it be because this is a HTML table (not ASP.NET Server control), that it's not maintaining the state of the changes?

• Entity Framework. Updating EntityCollection using disconnected objects via navigation property.

  I have a question, much liket this unanswered one. I'm trying to work with the entity framework, and having a tough time getting my foreign tables to update. I have something basically like this in the DB: Incident (table): -ID -other fields Responses (table): -FK:Incident.ID -other fields And and entities that match: Incident (entity) -ID -Other fields -Responses (EntityCollection of Responses via navigation property) Each Incident can have 0 or more responses. In my Webpage, I have a form to allow the user to enter all the details of an Incident, including a list of responses. I can add everything to the database when a new Incident is created, however I'm having difficulty with editing the Incident. When the page loads for edit, I populate the form and then store the responses in the viewstate. When the user changes the list of responses (adds one, deletes one or edits one). I store this back into the viewstate. Then when the user clicks the save button, I'd like to save the changes to the Incident and the Responses back to the DB. I cannot figure out how to get the responses from the detached viewstate into the Incident object so that they can be updated together. Currently when the user clicks save, I'm getting the Incident to edit from the db, making changes to the Incident's fields and then saving it back to the DB. However I can't figure out how to have the detached list of responses from the viewstate attach to the Incident. I have tried the following without success: Clearning the Incident.Responses collection and adding the ones from the viewstate back in: Incident.Responses.Clear() for each objResponse in Viewstate("Responses") Incident.Responses.add(objResponse) next Creating an EntityCollection from my list and then assiging that to the Incident.Responses Incident.Responses = EntityCollectionFromViewstateList Iterating through the responses in Incident.Response and assigning the corresponding object from viewstate: for each ObjResponse in Incident.Responses objResponse = objCorrespondingModifedResonseFromViewState Next These all fail, I'd like to be able to merge the changes into the Inicdent object so that when the BLL calls SaveChanges on the changes to both the Incident and Responses will happen at the same time. Any suggestions? I keep finding lots of stuff about assigning foreign keys (singular), but I haven't found a great solution for doing a set of entities assigned to another entity in this manner.

• Git Workflow With Capistrano

  I'm trying to get my head around a good git workflow using capistrano. I've found a few good articles, but I'm either not grasping completely what they're suggesting (likely) or they're somewhat lacking. Here's kind of what I had in mind so far, but I get caught up when to merge back into the master branch (i.e. before moving to stage? after?) and trying to hook it into capistrano for deployments: Make sure you’re up to date with all the changes made on the remote master branch by other developers git checkout master git pull Create a new branch that pertains to the particular bug you're trying to fix git checkout -b bug-fix-branch Make your changes git status git add . git commit -m "Friendly message about the commit" So, this is usually where I get stuck. At this point, I have a master branch that is healthy and a new bug-fix-branch that contains my (untested -- other than unit tests) changes. If I want to push my changes to stage (through cap staging deploy), do I have to merge my changes back into the master branch (I'd prefer not to since it seems like master should be kept free of untested code)? Do I even deploy from master (or should I be tagging a release first and then modifying my production.rb file to deploy from that tag)? git-deployment seems to address some of these workflow issues, but I can't seem to find out how on earth it actually hooks into cap staging deploy and cap production deploy. Thoughts? I assume there's a likely canonical way to do this, but I either can't find it or I'm too new to git to recognize that I have found it. Help!

  I'm trying to contribute to open source software for the first time, but I'm pretty inexperienced with version control systems. In particular, right now I want to make a number of changes to different parts of the code, but I'm not sure if the maintainer would want to integrate all of them into the master repository. However, the changes I'll be making are independent, i.e. they affect different parts of the file, or parts of different files. How should I go about making the changes? If I make a string of commits on the same branch, will the maintainer be able to pick and choose what he wants from the individual commit? E.g. can he patch in the changes I made in my second commit while ignoring the first one? Or should I make each change in a separate branch?

• NSFetchedResultsController doesn't fetch up the child-parent moc chain?

  I cannot find any clarification on this, so it may be a bug. Problem is, I have a series of parent-child Managed Object Context's. When I save on a child context the changes get pushed up to the parent, and I can fetch using a plain old NSFetchRequest. However, if I rely on an NSFetchedResultsController to pull these changes into a sibling context to the first, they do not see them. calling -(void)performFetch: error; doesn't seem to pull the changes either. After a restart of the app, all new data is available. My hypothesis is that NSFetchedResultsController only fetches from its current context and will not follow the chain to the persistent store. Can someone please set me straight here? Am I going to have to use notifications to monitor changes on other contexts? and finally, is this mentioned somewhere in the doc's? I cannot find it for the life of me.

I can add all the new files in my working copy before do commit, and the repository changes, but if for example i delete one file of the working copy i dont know the way to add this change before do commit. When you use the tortoise for example before do commit the program shows all the changes of the working copy and you can choose what changes commit and what changes dont.   I'm using makefiles to convert an internal file format to an XML file which is sent to other colleagues. They would make changes to the XML file and send it back to us (Don't ask, this needs to be this way ;)). I'd like to use my makefile to update the internal files when this XML changes. So I have these rules: %.internal: $(DATAFILES) # Read changes from XML if any # Create internal representation here %.xml: %.internal # Convert to XML here Now the XML could change because of the workflow described above. But since no data files have changed, make would tell me that file.internal is up-to-date. I would like to avoid making %.internal target phony and a circular dependency on %.xml obviously doesn't work. Any other way I could force make to check for changes in the XML file and re-build %.internal?

Each of the developers hg clones the repository and pushes his changes back to the shared repository. I've read the HG init tutorial and skimmed through the red bean book, but could not find how to control who is allowed to push changes to the shared repository. Can someone tell me how to set up a hg repository such that it only allows specified users (by unix userids) to push changes?

  Anyone know how the underlying replication model in sql server works? Do they essentially depend on UTC datetime values to determine if something is new or do they keep a table of all the changes (like a table of tableID+rowid that have changed). I am building my own "replication" system and was planning on using the dates to know what to replicate. Then I started wondering what would happen if the date got off in the computer for some reason. The obvious choice is to keep a log of the changes as you go and once you replicate those changes, you remove from the log of changes. But thats a lot of extra work, instead of just checking dates. I figure if sql server replication works by just checking the dates, then that should be good enough for me. Any wisdom here? thanks

When a feature is merged into master I do this on the development site: (currently on the new-feature branch) $ git commit -m"new feature finished" $ git push $ git checkout master $ git merge new-feature $ git push And on the production site: (currently on master branch) $git pull This works for me. But sometimes the client calls and needs a small change on the website quickly. I can do this on production on master and push master and this works fine. But when I use a feature branch for the small change I get a gap: (On production on branch master) $ git branch quick-feature $ git checkout quick-feature $ git push origin quick-feature $ edit files... $ git add . $ git commit -m"quick changes" $ git push # until this point the changes are live $ git checkout master #now the changes are not live anymore GAP $ git merge quick-feature # now the changes are live again $ git push I hope I could make clear the intention of this workflow. • Versioning code in two separate projects concurently with subverison

  I have a need to create a library of Object Oriented PHP code that will see much reuse and aspires to be highly flexible and modular. Because of its independent nature I would like it to exist as its own SVN project. I would like to be able to create a new web project, save it in SVN as its own separate project, and include within it the library project code as well. During this process, while coding the web application code and making commits, I may need to add a class to the library. I would like to be able to do so and commit those changes back to the libraries project code. In light of all this I could manage the code in two ways Commit the changes to the library back to a branch of its original base project code and make the branch name relevant to the web project I was using it with Commit the changes to the library back to the original code, growing it in size regardless of any specific references that might exist. I have two questions How can I include this library project code into a new project yet not break the subversion functionality, i.e. allowing me to make changes to each project individually? How I can keep the code synchronized? If I choose the first method of managing the library code I may want to grab changes from another branch and pull it in for use in another.

• Ruby on Rails: Uploading a modifed site.

  I'm having a heck of a time getting a site I modified to work correctly. I didn't set the site up originally, and since the person that set it up no longer works with me I had to learn ruby just to make some changes. I made all the changes in the development server and everything worked fine. Then I did a diff on the production and development and moved only my changes over. Unfortunately when I loaded my changes onto the production server I got a lot of errors. I've changed all of the permissions to 755, which took care being able to access anything at all, but after that I started getting a lot of 500 errors. Nothing showed up in the production.log file. I really have no clue what's going wrong except that perhaps things are not noticing the new changes. I moved the old site to a backup folder, and the new site crashes whenever it goes to anything that I've changed. In particular, I added a link to a new setup with an extra controller/model/view group. It works fine on development but in production it gives me a 404. Yes, I did copy all the files up. I even put everything back how it was, but the website is still showing the broken version of it. I checked the tmp/cache folder but it was empty. Running dispatch.fcgi shows the old site (which I expected) but it still shows the flawed new site when I connect through a browser. I've been tearing my hair out trying to get this to work. Any ideas as to how I can get this to work?

I was trying to add just the images to the index, so I ran this command: git add *.png But, this doesn't add the files. There were a few new image files that were added, but none of the ones that were modified/pre-existing were added. What gives?
