• IASA ITARC &ndash; Denver May 6th

  The Denver chapter of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) is holding an IT Architect Regional Conference (ITARC) in Denver on May 6th. The speaker list for this conference is amazing. Paul Rayner, Dave McComb, Randy Kahle, Peter Provost, Randy Stafford, George Fairbanks – all great speakers, and from Colorado. Brandon Satrom (who also happens to be the president of the IASA Austin chapter) will also be speaking, as will some other heavy hitters (for example, Ted Farrell, Chief Architect and Senior VP of Oracle). This is an amazing line-up, and the conference is quite reasonably priced ($150 for IASA members until April 10th, including a catered lunch). I also have the privilege of being a presenter at this conference. If you’ve ever heard any of the previously named speakers, you know that they set the bar quite high. Sounds like I’m going to have to step up my game. What I get to talk about is really cool stuff. The company I work for – Colorado CustomWare – brought me on board nearly two years ago. To say there was some technical debt is somewhat… understated. Equally understated would be that management is committed to doing the right thing. Over the past two years, we’ve done significant architectural refactoring – including an effort that took the entire team offline for most of a month. We’ve reduced the application size by 50% without losing functionality. As you can imagine, this has reduced the complexity of the application, making development faster and less prone to bugs. We’ve made many other changes – moving to an agile process, training developers, moving towards a more OO architecture. The changes we’ve made reveal, in some ways, just how far afield we were.. and there are still more changes to be made. Amazingly enough, our leadership team is eager for me to share these experiences with other architects. I’m really looking forward to being able to do so.

• Did Microsoft designers got their butts kicked 3 years ago?

  This is something I've been wondering about for about a year now.  Microsoft has a history of creating very useful products, with lots of useful features.  But useful does not mean usable.  A lot of stuff coming out of Redmond the past 10 years don't really seem to have been well thought out from a user design point of view.  Lots of extra steps, lots of popup windows...very little innovative thinking going on about the user experience of these products.But about a year ago I started seeing changes in the new products coming out of Microsoft.  Windows 7 is a good example of a big change.  They really got their asses handed to them on Vista, so they had to make a change.  But it looks like this change in philosophy has bled over to other areas.  The new Office (2010) lineup has a lot of changes in it to make it way more usable. Given that big changes like this take about 3 years to go from start to actually shipping product, I'm curious what happened internally at Microsoft that really drove this change in product design.  I think that Microsoft got so focused on just adding new functionality for so long, they forgot about the little things that can really make or break a product.  Office 2010 is full of these little things that make it much nicer to use.  I just hope its not too late for them.

  I deploy apps via ClickOnce. After each deployment we have to review the changes made and send out an email to the users with the changes. What I decided now to do is to use CodebaseHQ’s API to access a project’s SVN repository and display the commit notes so some users who download new updates can check what was changed or updated in an app. This saves a heck of a lot of time, especially when your apps are in beta and you are making several changes daily based on feedback. • Table modifications while running db replication (MS SQL 2008)

  I'm running SQL Server 2008 Std with a database that is being published in a "Transactional Publication" to a single subscriber. We are unable to make any changes to the tables on the publisher without getting the "cannot modify table because it is published for replication". This seems odd because schema changes (or scripts run to do this) should be pushed to the subscriber. We currently have to drop the entire publication system to make table changes. What am I missing? There must be a way to update the publisher tables? thanks!

When that file changes, they want to be able to push out the changes to all servers that use it with a minimal effort. • .NET Demon 1.0 Released

  Today we're officially releasing version 1.0 of .NET Demon, the Visual Studio Extension Alex Davies and I have been working on for the last 6 months. There have been beta versions available for a while, but we have now released the first "official" version and made it available to purchase. If you haven't yet tried the tool, it's all about reducing the time between when you write a line of code and when you are able to try it out so you don't have to wait: Continuous compilation We use spare CPU cycles on your machine to compile your code in the background when you make changes, so assemblies are up to date whenever you want to run them. Some clever logic means we only recompile code which may have been affected by your changes. Continuous save .NET Demon can perform background saving, so you don't lose any work in case of crashes or power failures, and are less likely to forget to commit changed files. Continuous testing (Experimental) The testing tool in .NET Demon watches which code you change in your solution, and automatically reruns tests which are impacted, so you learn about any breaking changes as quickly as possible. It also gives you inline test coverage information inside Visual Studio. Continuous testing is still experimental - it will work fine in many cases, but we know it's not yet perfect. Releasing version 1.0 doesn't mean we're pausing development or pushing out improvements. • As an indie game dev, what processes are the best for soliciting feedback on my design/spec/idea? [closed]

  Background I have worked in a professional environment where the process usually goes like the following: Brain storm idea Solidify the game mechanics / design Iterate on design/idea to create a more solid experience Spec out the details of the design/idea Build it Step 3. is generally done with the stakeholders of the game (developers, designers, investors, publishers, etc) to reach an 'agreement' which meets the goals of all involved. Due to this process involving a series of often opposing and unique view points, creative solutions can surface through discussion / iteration. This is backed up by a process for collating the changes / new ideas, as well as structured time for discussion. As a (now) indie developer, I have to play the role of all the stakeholders (developers, designers, investors, publishers, etc), and often find myself too close to the idea / design to do more than minor changes, which I feel to be local maxima when it comes to the best result (I'm looking for the global maxima, of course). I have read that ideas / game designs / unique mechanics are merely multipliers of execution, and that keeping them secret is just silly. In sharing the idea with others outside the realm of my own thinking, I hope to replicate the influence other stakeholders have. I am struggling with the collation of changes / new ideas, and any kind of structured method of receiving feedback. My question: As an indie game developer, how and where can I share my ideas/designs to receive meaningful / constructive feedback? How can I successfully collate the feedback into a new iteration of the design? Are there any specialized websites, etc?

• Hard link not works under MacOS in GUI mode

  Hi, i faced a little strange behavior, while using hard links. From terminal, i create a text file 1.txt and a hard link "to this file" nano 1.txt mkdir dir ln 1.txt ./dir/ I check the resulting hard link and see that its contents are the same as of the original file. less ./dir/1.txt I change the initial file ... nano 1.txt ... and see, that changes was reflected in hard-link less ./dir/1.txt I change content of hard-link (more correct, of course - file, being referenced with hard-link) ... nano ./dir/1.txt ... and see, that changes are reflected in initial file less 1.txt Until now, all going well... Now, I close terminal and start playing with created files (1.txt and ./dir/1.txt) from Finder. When i change on this two files with TextEdit, changes are not reflected in another file. Just like the hard link was teared off... What is going on here ?

Core point is about ability to maintain the data, i.e. all user profile settings, like nickname, password, email, avatar, birthday and others (preferably configurable). One example of good ldap integration, level of which I'm expecting, is drupal's ldap integration, which allows to map any user's attribute into ldap and keeps it in sync with database. Year ago I've done a small research over existing Free&FOSS engines and find out few forum engines with LDAP integration, namely SFM, phpBB and something else. The most maintained solution were provided by phpBB3, which supports LDAP integration out-of-box, but it is unable to sync data with changes in LDAP server made by other software. Actually it wasn't even propagating changes back, I'm not saying about ability to map additional attributes (other than name/password/email). Also, I haven't found any forum with architecture which have proper abstraction over user settings, thus I doubt that this engines (including phpBB) are possible to mod such functionality without introducing dramatic changes into core codebase. More recent research showed that even some commercial software, like IPB is unable to keep it's database synced with LDAP directory and map additional attributes. In other words, all support I've seen so far is simple user creation upon first user's login, which is not good for us, as forum is not primary site and should not maintain it's own users base (to reduce risk of possible collisions). LDAP import is required due to many other services (ftp, email, jabber, drupal site) using same users base. Currently we have forum embedded into Drupal site, but we are unsatisfied with it's features. BTW, we are using Linux and this is not duplicate of this question, as it's author seems to be satisfied with behaviour described above. So, my question is: Are there any (preferably FOSS&free) forum engines that may import, export, keep in sync, or otherwise integrade with LDAP user database (preferably with ability to map additional fields to ldap attributes)?

Does anyone know of a "best practices" list that I can start from? The methods for doing change control at this data center are well established. The list would be of specific configuration items that should or should not be included in the change control process, of example; static route entries switch port assignments firewall rule additions/changes etc.

• Linux LVM snapshot commit or revert?

  Hi, I'm about to perform an experimental upgrade on my CentOS 5 server. If the upgrade fails, I want to be able to back out the changes to the filesystem. This scenario seems similar to the example in Section 3.8 of the LVM HOWTO for LVM2 read-write snapshots - but the example is rather lacking in actual how-to. 1) How would I commit the changes, merging them back into the original partition? 2) How would I revert the changes, restoring the filesystem back to its original state? Should I assume that I'll need to restart several services, if not outright reboot? 3) Is it possible to snapshot only certain directories on a partition, or is it a partition-wide operation? • Download/update webpages listed in XML sitemap

  I'm searching a FLOSS tool that downloads all pages (and embedded resources, e.g. images) linked in a XML sitemap (built according to http://www.sitemaps.org/). The tool should "crawl" the sitemap regularly and look for new and deleted URLs and changes in the lastmod element. So whenever a page gets added/deleted/updated, the tool should apply the changes. Some sitemaps list sub-sitemaps in sitemapindex?sitemap. The tool should understand this and load all linked sub-sitemaps and look for URLs in there. I know there are tools that allow me to extract all URLs from the sitemap, so that I could feed them to wget or similar tools (see for example: Extract Links from a sitemap(xml)). But this wouldn't help in getting noticed about updates to pages. Tracking the webpages itself for updates doesn't work, because "secondary" content on the pages changes daily, but lastmod gets only updated when relevant content changed.

• Which approach would lead to an API that is easier to use?

  I'm writing a JavaScript API and for a particular case, I'm wondering which approach is the sexiest. Let's take an example: writing a VideoPlayer, I add a getCurrentTime method which gives the elapsed time since the start. The first approach simply declares getCurrentTime as follows: getCurrentTime():number where number is the native number type. This approach includes a CURRENT_TIME_CHANGED event so that API users can add callbacks to be aware of time changes. Listening to this event would look like the following: myVideoPlayer.addEventListener(CURRENT_TIME_CHANGED, function(evt){ console.log ("current time = "+evt.getDispatcher().getCurrentTime()); }); The second approach declares getCurrentTime differently: getCurrentTime():CustomNumber where CustomNumber is a custom number object, not the native one. This custom object dispatches a VALUE_CHANGED event when its value changes, so there is no need for the CURRENT_TIME_CHANGED event! Just listen to the returned object for value changes! Listening to this event would look like the following: myVideoPlayer.getCurrentTime().addEventListener(VALUE_CHANGED, function(evt){ console.log ("current time = "+evt.getDispatcher().valueOf()); }); Note that CustomNumber has a valueOf method which returns a native number that lets the returned CustomNumber object being used as a number, so: var result = myVideoPlayer.getCurrentTime()+5; will work! So in the first approach, we listen to an object for a change in its property's value. In the second one we directly listen to the property for a change on its value. There are multiple pros and cons for each approach, I just want to know which one the developers would prefer to use!

• Continuous integration never results in build errors

  Hi, I'm working with a variety of Java EE websites which use internal libraries we've developed. For each website, we only upgrade to new versions of our internal libraries as needed, and before committing we make sure that the site compiles fine. What this means is that when TeamCity does a build of one of our sites, the site compiles fine, but later when the site is updated to the latest version of internal libraries, there might be a compile error. Is there a good way to handle this? We're not using Maven yet; would using Maven mean that our websites could automatically use the latest version of internal libraries? Thanks. Clarification: What we sometimes run into is this: Project A depends on a library, and is currently using library version 1.0 Project B also depends on that library. I make changes to the library so that it is now version 1.5. Project B now uses 1.5. Project A and project B have both been built just fine by the CI server (TeamCity) Working on project A again, I update to 1.5 and discover that 1.5 has breaking changes in it. Is there a way for the CI server to discover these kinds of breaking changes?

• How often does Dreamhost change IP Addresses

  So I just migrated our site to dreamhost because they are free for non-profits. However, right after I switched the nameservers over to them they changed the IP address of the site. So first they propagated out IP address x.x.x.180, then they switched it to x.x.x.178 and had to propagate that out. Point being it meant a lot of downtime since a lot of big DNS servers (like google) thought the address was still x.x.x.180 for up to 5 hours after they switched it. This is compounded by the fact that most our visitors to the site live here in Unalaska and we have local DNS servers that take a LONG time to update (like a day or more) since we get all our internet over satellite. So every time Dreamhost changes our IP address it can mean a day of downtime for us in our community. So my question is, how often do these changes take place? I asked Dreamhost support and they gave me a vague response: I wish I could say, however those changes happen at random times. They're not that frequent, maybe even months between updates, but there's no way to know for sure. First, I hardly believe that they don't know their own system well enough to give me at least some estimate or average. Second, is it worth looking at other providers so that I can get a static IP address? We were hosting the site here originally and hadn't run into this problem since we have a static IP here. We don't get a ton of traffic but usually around 500 hits a day or so, sometimes more if our stories are featured on statewide or national news broadcasts. So hours of downtime every time Dreamhost "randomly" decides to move our server location can be bad for our readership.

The changes are neither persisted nor the Mbean value is also left unmodified.... Please also be aware of the below changes in SSL implementation in 12c version 1. Certicom has been removed from WebLogic Server 12.1.1 and is no longer supported. 2. JSSE is the only SSL implementation that is supported in WebLogic Server 12.1.1. The following configuration changes have been made to be consistent with this support: The default for JSSEEnabled has been changed to true. Oracle recommends that you keep this value set to true. If JSSEEnabled is set to false, it will be ignored. That is, the MBean value will not be changed either in memory or the persisted config.xml file.
