• Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server

  I'm using Windows 7 Beta and trying to install a web application locally. This web site uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPRESS) and a MDB file in the web site's ~/App_Data folder. I was instructed to configure IIS7 to use Classic .NET AppPool for this web application. Each time the web site loads, I receive the following error: There was an error trying to connect to the Database Server: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed. The Internet is packed with articles written on this subject. The prevailing wisdom seems to be: Configure the SQL Express Service to use the Local System account. Delete the following directory: C:\Users\username\AppData\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS Neither of these fixes have made any impact. I have tinkered with permissions and settings for hours to no avail. Can anyone suggest a fix or help me understand how to get more detailed information about the problem.

• file association in Windows 8

  Associating a file to a program should be easy in Windows. However, i find it rather difficult when I'm working on Windows 8. associating a file to a desktop application that I install on my computer is easy because the whole operation is entirely the same with that in the previous Windows releases. What I find rather difficult is associating a file to a Metro apps that I download from the store. So far, I have been using Multimedia 8 (a metro app) to open my video files. However, this app cannot handle particular files-like *.dat-that can be associated easily to desktop video applications, such as media player classic and the like. When I try to associate my DAT files to Multimedia 8, there is indeed a "look for another app on this PC" option at the bottom of the "open with" pop up. But alas, I cannot figure out how to locate my Multimedia 8 app to which I want to associate my DAT file (as well as other video files that are not yet associated to this metro app). If anyone of you knows how to locate those metro apps, please tell me. many thanks

• Juniper NetScreen NS-5GT traffic monitoring

  I've done casual research into the subject and am truly dismayed at the lack of compatible tools for such a simple task. Maybe someone can provide assistance. We have a NetScreen NS-5GT in the office. I need to be able to get a glance of current traffic per endpoint -- I think the equivalent of 'get sessions' with byte counts/rates. I don't care about bars, graphs, and reports. Something as simple as a classic software firewall display would be perfect. I can't shell out money on something real like SolarWinds products, so a free solution is essential. I'm willing to do a little work but refuse to program something from scratch. It's not prudent right now for me to install a hub or otherwise mess around physically. There must be something out there I can use, maybe in combination. I don't believe I'm asking too much. Specific answers only please, e.g. monitoring software you know will actually work with this antiquated device. I've read about general approaches to the broader problem dozens of times already.

• Win7 - Some pinned program's icons are corrupt, show default

  I have both FF 3.6 & Chrome pinned to my taskbar in win7. The icons for these two programs show up as the ugly default icon from yesteryear. Strange. Is there some way to force an icon refresh for pinned programs? When I first added them they showed properly, but several days later they reverted to this state Un-pinning the program causes the icon to show up properly, and re-pinning it causes it to break again. These other proggies show up fine: Media Center, Media Player Classic HC, Hulu Desktop, WMP, and the folders. I have 2 user accounts on this box, and both are showing this behavior. I have tried changing the taskbar icon size to 'small' and back, but to no effect. Edit (Add) The icons show up as broken in the start menu too, but I can navigate to the EXE directly. When I click "change icon" in the properties for the start menu entry I get the error : Can not find %ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome...\chrome.exe.

• Windows Media Based video audio converter?

  This may seem like an odd question. Right now ONLY windows media player, VLC and media player classic opens and plays my audio video correctly. Virtualdub plays it back with the wrong framerate and losses the audio, Avidemux 2.5 seems to be able to dump the audio/video but the video (like all other apps) is either a bad framerate or is wrong (glitches and bad framerate or bad dump). Nothing recognizes the audio file and when playing the video Avidemux (and most other things) die. FFMPEG cant seem to split the video or audio (using copy -an and etc) and this is getting me very angry. VLC dumps the video incorrectly when i try dumping it with that too. What can i use to convert the video? its streaming so it starts at 26mins in and ends at 28 (this is where apps have the problem. They dont know this and fudge everything or crash). I manage to dump the audio with Avidemux but virtualdub and ffmpeg says unreconized codec. Even if i cant convert it (it seems compressed enough) i want to at least attach it back into an AVI.

• Is there a way to tag MP3 the way you can do with Photos in Live Photo Gallery or Picazza?

  I really do love the way you can tag pictures in Windows Live Photo Gallery. I find it incredibly useful to be able to tag the same picture with the tag "Cancun" and have it been automatically included when I look for the tag "Beach", "Trips" and "Fun Pic", since its a child tag of the former and also has a tag for the later. I also like that I can look for rating in the pics. On the other side, tagging MP3 has always been a pain in the ass, because I just find it to hard to classify music! Is it pop? techno? techno-pop? rock? indie-rock? indie-post-classic-pop-techno? I hate how ID3 just have one tag for genre, so I've tried tricks like putting all the genres I think it fits into, and then having lists in Winamp (which I dont use anymore) that filter out words in the ID3 tags (ie, Tag: Genre, Contains: Rock = rock list). But then, what about moods? I want to be able to tag my songs in genres and in moods, you know, happy, concentrate/work, party, romantic (wink wink), etc. Is there any way to do this, preferably in a way in which tags could carry on to other music players? • Win2k8R2 / IIS 7.5 - users getting 503 response, no 503 error reported in logs

  I've got 2 web servers with mirrored content. There's a load balancer sitting in front of them. Starting yesterday we've been getting people complaining about 503 errors. i can't find any 503 errors in the IIS log file. However the server host is saying these errors are due to .Net errors in our website which are causing the app pool to recycle. They pointed out several errors in the windows application event log which look like this: Log Name: Application Source: ASP.NET 4.0.30319.0 Date: 3/31/2012 8:35:37 PM Event ID: 1309 Task Category: Web Event Level: Warning Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: 6251.local Description: Event code: 3005 Event message: An unhandled exception has occurred. They said if the app pool were not recycle, the accountname would instead be the folder where the website files are located. I checked the app pool settings - it's set to recycle every 29 hours. And the rapid fail protection is set to the default of 5 failures in 5 minutes. But i have not seen 5 failures in the event log in that short of a time span. Can anyone help me confirm if the 503 responses are indeed being generated by the app pools recycling? Or are these errors coming from somewhere else? My guess at the time was their load balancer was the one actually returning the 503 error. But that was just a guess.

• IIS permission configuration issue

  Sorry the title of this question is a little ambiguous but I don't really have any idea where the issue lies - I'm seeking some clarification of the server error logs. Basically, I had a dedicated server running Windows 2003 and Plesk (v8 I think). Last week the server hardware failed and the entire thing had to be rebuilt from scratch. New hardware was put in, new operating system (Win2008), new Plesk installation (v9.5), new software (MSSQL etc) then all data ported over manually from old C and D drives to restore all 30 client sites. It was hell! All has been okay for a couple of days now but about an hour ago POP! Suddenly all sites went down giving a 500 error. Restarting all services eventually brought everything back online, but I'm now living in total fear. It can - and probably will - happen again. The guys on support gave me the following errors from the server log: The Template Persistent Cache initialization failed for Application Pool 'ASP.NET v4.0 Classic' because of the following error: Could not create a Disk Cache Sub-directory for the Application Pool. The data may have additional error codes.. The worker process for application pool 'domain1.com(domain)(2.0)(pool)' encountered an error 'Cannot read configuration file ' trying to read configuration data from file '\\?\C:\inetpub\temp\apppools\domain1.com(domain)(2.0)(pool).config', line number '0'. The data field contains the error code. The worker process for application pool 'PleskControlPanel' encountered an error 'Cannot read configuration file ' trying to read configuration data from file '\\?\C:\inetpub\temp\apppools\PleskControlPanel.config', line number '0'. The data field contains the error code. The support guys are so ambiguous about this and it scares me horribly. Can anyone positively identify the cause of this error which lead to all client website going offline? What can be done to prevent it from happening again?   as title said differences between those 2. I read all the definition and some articles, but I need information about some other aspects. Here is the thing. We want to build a web site that will contain: site, database, uploads, numerous background services that would have to collect information from uploads and from some other sites, parse them etc...I doubt that there are portlets that fits our specific need so we will have to make them our self. So, questions: 1. Deployment ( and difference in cost if possible), is deploying portals much more easier then web app ( java or .net) 2. Server load. Does portal consume much of server power ( and can you strip portal of thing that you do not use) 3. Implementation and developing of portlets. Can u make all the things that you could have done in java or .net? 4. General thoughts of when to use portals and when classic web app. Tnx all in advence...

  I was configuring DNS on my server using BIND9, everything seems to work, but I have a question regarding my config file. I've ended up with this configuration in /etc/bind/named.conf.local zone "example.com" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.example.com"; allow-transfer { 192.168.1.1; }; }; zone "1.168.192.in-addr.arpa" { type master; notify no; file "/etc/bind/db.192"; allow-transfer { 192.168.1.1; }; }; forwarders { 10.253.22.140; 10.253.22.141; }; I've read about the different type of dns server, like primary master etc. The first two parts (zone and zone) corresponds to primary dns server configuration. First record for "classic" lookup, second one for reverse. The last part (forwarders) is configuration of cache-server and contains the ISP's IP of DNS server. So all names resolved thanks to this server will be cached. Simple question: am I right? Does my description make sense? Or one server can be only either master or either cached?

• Do you known a reputable backup software that can capture ONLY file system structure + attributes, WITHOUT file content

  Is there, on Windows, a reputable backup software out there capable of capturing ONLY a file system's directory and file structure, along with each item's attributes, WITHOUT capturing the actual file content (all files should be zero-length in the backup). I thoroughly searched the web for a solution and wasn't able to find one. Scenario when this would be very useful: I have a large drive with a huge amount of files. If the drive dies, I don't care so much about the content in these files (I can always download this content again from the Internet at any time) but I do care HUGELY about the names of the files that were on it, possibly also about their MD5 hashes and other classic file attributes (especially created-date / modified-date). The functionality I need is present to an extent in "media"/file cataloging software (i.e. whereisit) and, to a lesser extent, in a Total Commander set of extensions (DiskDir, DiskDirExtended). The huge drawback with cataloging software is that it's not designed to store previous versions of each item (AFAIK) and, most importantly, it has very weak content backup capabilities. I managed to think of a hack but I hope there's some backup software out there that already has this capability and I just failed to find it, thus this question. The hack: RoboCopy could be used with /CREATE (CREATE directory tree and zero-length files only) or /COPY (what to COPY for files) without the D=Data flag, to clone a directory structure into one where all files are zero-length but have the desired attributes. Then I would backup the cloned directory structure with a reputable backup software. I would really love to avoid a hack like this one, if possible. Thanks, Bogdan

• How to diagnose website performance/app pool recycling with Windows 2008/IIS7

  Ok, so there are various symptoms here (clients and and our own employees complaining of intermittent slowdowns, getting 'kicked out' to login page or just having a save request not properly save the submitted data). The environment: Windows Server 2008 (Datacenter), Service Pack 2, 64-bit, 2x2.8 GHz processors, 7.5 GB RAM MS SQL Server 2008 (running on the same machine) IIS 7 There are ~10 websites running on the server, each in their own application pool - most of these pools are running in Integrated mode, 2 are in Classic, all are on .NET 2.0 and all run as ApplicationPoolIdentity. I'm trying to analyze, diagnose, and troubleshoot and am struggling with where to get more info about what could be happening. Here are some steps i have already taken: Set each application pool to recycle once per day, and removed any other automatic recycling Set a Virtual Memory Limit for each to 1024000KB (1GB) Enabled ALL 'Generate Recycle Event Log Entry' entries (Config Changes, Isapi Reported Unhealthy, Manual Recycle, Private Memory Limit Exceeded, Regular Time Interval, Request Limit Exceeded, Specific Time, Virtual Memory Limit Exceeded) I have seen the app pool processes recycle (in Task Manager) - a new one will start up, and then the first one dies off - and this has happened without the memory or time going over the settings. This is a fairly new server, and most of these came from Windows Server 2003/IIS6. Any 'next steps' for setting up information gathering, logging, diagnosing, etc. would be much appreciated! j

• Why does notepad crash on desktop files in the save-as dialog?

  Here's a puzzling problem - maybe somebody has an idea. Right now I am out of ideas. On Win7 64bit, the following crashes Notepad: On Desktop, right click, select "New | Text Document". This creates "New Text Document.txt". Right click on that file, select "Edit". This opens notepad with the empty file. Select "File | Save as": Notepad crashes and Win7 reports that "Notepad has stopped working". Now, move the file to c:\temp and repeat steps 2 and 3: no crash this time and the save-as dialog appears normally. I can create similar steps for the "open" dialog. Things I have tried: Safe mode - does not work, same problem Create a new user and try again logged in as that user - no crash Name file differently, or create elsewhere and then move to desktop - same problem Use Wordpad instead - same problem Review shell extensions with ShellExView - nothing extraordinary here Stare at the event log entries for each of the crashes. Does not enlighten me. At time of crash look at the process explorer stack view. Hangs at a function "TaskDialog". sfc.exe /scannow repaired some files but the problem persists. • HP G61 Laptop wont boot- display stays off, caps and num lock indicators blink repeatedly

  I had my HP G61 laptop running in sleep for a while. When I came back to it about a half-hour later, it was no longer in sleep mode - the power light and the Wi-Fi indicator light were on (I keep Wi-Fi off becuase I use a wired connection) - but nothing was showing on screen. In fact, the display wasn't even turned on. So I let it sit for about 10 minutes but nothing happened. I did a force shut down and rebooted. Instead of a normal boot, the display didnt turn on, the Wi-Fi indicator was off, and the Caps Lock and Num Lock lights just blinked repeatedly. On the external keyboard i use, none of the light indicators were blinking or even on. I tried force shut-down again 10 times, then unplugged all connections except for the power cable (my laptop battery dosent hold a charge for more than 2 minutes, so I always must have a wall connection) and tried to boot again but still nothing happened. I unplugged the battery and even then nothing happened. I also tried booting with the disk drive open, and then with it closed again. On the time it was closed, I was able to successfully boot into Windows, but recieved a "Windows did not shut-down sucessfully" notice. Does anybody know why this may have happened? My PC's specs: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit 4GB of physical RAM, 8GB of vRAM (on a flash drive) AMD Vision x64 processor (don't know any other specs about it) ATI Radeon graphics card, 392 MB DVD-R/W lightscribe drive 2 External hard-disks (first one is 1.5TB, second one is 1TB) custom boot-screen and boot-annimation Standard BIOS apps running before sleep: firefox 10.4 itunes 10.6 adobe photoshop extended CS5.1 rockstar games social club (running in background) microsoft powerpoint 2010 professional edition google chrome I was NOT running Aero or any fancy themes - I was using the normal windows classic theme. I have a desktop icon manager application called Stardock Fences that was also running (it runs as a service/process).

• Windows 7, network shares, and authentication via local group instead of local user

  I have been doing some troubleshooting of my home network lately and have come to an odd conclusion that I was hoping to get some clarification on. I'm used to managing share permissions in a domain environment via groups instead of individual user accounts. I have a box at home running windows 7 ultimate and I decided to share some directories on that machine. I set it up to disallow guest access and require specifically granted permissions. (password moe?). Anyway, after a whole bunch of time i figured out that even though the shares I created were allowed via a local group i could not access them until i gave specific allowance to the intended user. I just didn't think i would have to do that. So here is the breakdown. Network is windows workgroup, not homegroup or nt domain PC_1 - win 7 ultimate - sharing in classic mode - user BOB - groups Admins PC_2 - win 7 starter - client - user BOB - groups admins PC_3 - win xp pro - client - user BOB - groups admins the share on PC_1 granted permission to only the local group administrators. local user BOB on PC_1 was a member of administrators. Both PC_2 and PC_3 could not browse the intended share on PC_1 because they were denied access. Also, no challenge was presented. They were simply denied. After adding BOB specifically to the intended share everything works just fine. Remember, its not an nt domain just a workgroup. But still, shouldn't i be able to manage share permissions via groups instead of individual user accounts? D.

• 530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated Exchange 2010 for some computers within mask

  We have a classic problem with Client not Authenticated but with a specific twist: We have an Exchange 2010 cluster, let's say EX01 and EX02, the connection is always to smtp.acme.com, then it is switched through load balancer. We have an application server, call it APP01 There are clients connected to the APP01. There is a need for anonymous mail relay from both clients and APP01. The Anonymous Users setting of the Exchange is DISABLED, but the specific computers - APP01 and clients by the mask, let's say, 192.168.2.* - are enabled. For internal relay, a "Send Connector" is created, and then the above IP addresses are added for the connector to allow computers, servers, or any other device such as a copy machine to use the exchange server to relay email to recipients. The problem is that the relay works for APP01 and some clients, but not others (we get "Client not Authenticated") - all inside the same network and the same mask. This is basically what we do to test it outside of our application: http://smtp25.blogspot.sk/2009/04/530-571-client-was-not-authenticated.html So, I am looking for ideas: What can be the reason for such a strange behaviour? Where I can see the trace of what's going on at the Exchange side?

• Fix Video timelines

  So, I have been going through and riping all of my DVD's and it seems that the way to get the highest quality out of these is to have DVD Shrink de-encrypt, rip, and decompress, the DVD's. After that I usually end up with a high quality (high size) set of .vob files in a classic DVD structure. Then I use a python script that I wrote to automate the process of finding the title sequence and then combining all of the title sequences' .vob files together into one file(similar to the "copy /b" command in windows), and then changing the extension to .mpg (a more widely supported format then .vob). This allows me to get a high quality rip in about 40 min. The problem comes in playing the files. I need all of the ripped dvd's to play on my media computer using windows media center but windows media center (and vlc for that matter) all think that the video files are anywhere from 5 min. to 0 min. which is not a problem (the video will still play all the way through) but if you want to pause it, when it is unpaused the video will start all the way over (Also fast forward and rewind don't work). I suspect that it is something wrong with the way the timeline is encoded in the video file, various forums on the internet recommended using virtualdub to fix the errors. But when I try to open the file virtual dub says that the file is not in mpeg-1 encoding and may be in mpeg-2. Is there any way to fix this? PS: I am aware that there was a similar question but it hasn't had any activity for 2 months and is dealing more with wmv files.

• How to get back the themes feature in Windows XP?

  When I try to set a visual style in Windows XP (the standard Luna, for example), I get one of these two: "Access denied" error. It works, but when I restart the computer, I get the Classic look again, with no errors. Also, the "Windows and icons" dropdown is grayed out in the "Appearance". This is a list of things I have tried, with no results: Making sure "Use visual styles on windows" is checked on System Properties Advanced Performance. Restarting the "Themes" service. It starts cleanly, no errors. Applying these two fixes: Kelly's Corner and tweaks.com. Running sfc /scannow and checking the integrity of uxtheme.dll against a clean installation of XP Restoring the whole \Windows\Resources\Themes directory. Creating a new user. The new user does not seem to suffer this problem. Maybe this is the solution, create a new user and migrating all the data, but it would be a pain, and I would prefer reinstalling the whole thing. I am using Windows XP Professional SP3, with no spyware, no virus, and no other visible malfunctions. How can I fix this?

• Winamp playing sound but no video

  I am having problems playing video in Winamp (the movie I am trying to play is an AVI - not sure if other formats work). I have installed the K-Lite Codec Pack, and the video does work in Winamp Classic. I can also play the video in Winamp on another machine (although I can't remember the exact configuration details of that machine - and I don't think they're relevant). There are a few symptoms: The content of the Video view is either empty, transparent, or displays rendering from other programs. Opening the Visualization view shows the following error: MILKDROP ERROR DirectX initialization failed (GetDeviceCaps). This means that no valid 3D-accelerated display adapter could be found on your computer. If you know this is not the case, it is possible that your graphics subsystem is unstable; please try rebooting your computer and then try to run the plugin again. Otherwise, please install a 3D-accelerated display adapter. Trying to open streams via the SHOUTCast TV plugin shows Error opening video output, and the video does not open. Opening the file with WMC causes the following error (although the movie still plays): Error creating DX9 allocation presenter CreateDevice failed D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE There are no warnings displayed in Device Manager, although the display adapter is the standard Windows one. Running DxDiag shows no problems (codec for Video listed as XviD 1.1.2 Final). GSpot reports that codecs are installed. • Is there a good alternative to Videora iPod Converter?

  I use Videora to convert my videos (in DivX/XviD format) to something I can play on my iPod Classic. I really dislike it. It's clunky, riddled with adverts, sometimes doesn't convert properly (the infamous "invalid public atom" error - see Google for more) and has a UI that truly stinks. On the upside, it's free, accepts a list of video files (via the oddly hard to find "1-click convert" button) and just gets on with the converting as it already knows the correct settings for my iPod. One final nice touch is that once they are converted, it'll automatically upload them into iTunes. Are there any alternatives which have all the upsides but none of the downsides? Bonus points if they can set the metadata in iTunes correctly for TV shows (season, show, episode) and delete the converted file afterwards (as my iTunes settings means that a copy is made elsewhere). I've looked at a bunch of applications (handbrake, virtualdub, mediacoder, format factory, any video converter, convertxtodvd) but many of them fail the "just select a list of files and get on with converting" test - let alone all the other features I want. I have no desire to individually set the video size of each file or the codec or the post-processing options. I'm currently using the command line version of HandBrake (handbrakecli) and a hand-written DOS batch file to go through every file in a folder and convert it. It does most of what I want, just not in a very slick way. Can anyone recommend anything better? It needs to work on Windows 7 and be free.

• Change Windows 7 Explorer's Details Pane limits

  For some reason, MS decided to completely kill the status bar's functionality in Win7 (and maybe Vista, but I don't know for sure). I have tried all possible options such as Classic Shell and so on. Basically, the one thing I miss most is seeing at a glance the total size of my selected files. I know I can press Alt+Enter or whatever, but that's not the point. The point is that the so-called 'details' pane stops providing details if more than 15 files are selected! WTH? Cannot understand the reason behind such a stupid arbitrary limit, that doesn't seem to be user-configurable at all. Anyway, what I'm looking for is a way to change that limit, either via the registry or otherwise. If changing the limit isn't possible, would it be possible for some programming genius to create a very small optimized light-weight non resource-hungry (you get the idea!) program whose sole purpose will be to automatically click the "Show more details..." link in the details pane after every file selection? For bonus points, the program should wait for a second or two after file selection is complete to do this, so that selecting multiple files in quick succession doesn't hit the HDD repeatedly. Any takers for the challenge? :)

• Shared configuration for Eclipse on Debian server

  I've manually installed the latest Eclipse on our debian server and wanted to configure it so all users share the same configuration. It turned out less obvious than I thought: I don't seem to be able to install packages for all users. If I run it myself, all configuration data is saved under my own home directory. If I run Eclipse using sudo, everything is saved under the root directory but is not accessible for other users when they run Eclipse. I've been browsing the manual of Eclipse and some forums, but apart from a "yes, you can" I couldn't find any information on how that should be done. The biggest problem is installing plugins for all users to be found. Any help is greatly appreciated. Eclipse : 3.6.1 classic, installed using this procedure. Server uname: GNU/Linux * 2.6.26-2-amd64 Server is accessed using Putty, and Gnome desktop through realVNC. Just mentioning it if that is of any importance. Our sysadmin is on "prolonged leave" (working in Spain and never replaced), so I'm stuck without help here. • How to get Synergy working on Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7?

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit, however, Synergy only works when a window (application or folder) is open and touching the edge of the screen where the mouse should "jump". In other words, if a window is open and maximized, Synergy works normally. Without any windows, the mouse does not jump to the other screen. My steps: (Ubuntu) apt-get install -y quicksynergy (Windows) Install Synergy (I've tried both 1.3.8 and 1.4.8 and both 32 and 64-bit) On Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit (Synergy Server config): ~/.quicksynergy/synergy.conf section: screens myubuntu: mywin7: end section: links myubuntu: right = mywin7 mywin7: left = myubuntu end On Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit: $ /usr/bin/synergys -f --config .quicksynergy/synergy.conf ... 2012-04-25T14:04:12 NOTE: client "mywin7" has connected /build/buildd/synergy-1.3.6/lib/server/CServer.cpp,287 (output hangs here) On Windows 7 64-bit: Synergy 1.3.8 Client on Microsoft Windows 7 x86 (WOW64) started client connecting to 'myubuntu': ###.###.###.###:24800 connected to server (output hangs here) At this point, things should work, but my mouse still can't change screens unless a window is maximized on my Ubuntu machine. Everything is running on port 24800. No firewall on Ubuntu. Firewall port 24800 open on Windows 7. This was previously working on Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 (so only Ubuntu has been upgraded). I'm open to using either 32 or 64-bit on either server or client side, but I just want to get it working on Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7! I'm also using Ubuntu Classic (no effects), and not Unity.

• IIS7 ASP.NET application - 2 identical apps in 2 identical app pools, 1 is responsive and 1 is not

  I have an ASP.NET (v4.0) web app that is installed in a virtual directory (as an application) and is hosted in it's own app pool. This is repeated for each instance of the app (i.e. per customer). The app pools are integrated (not classic) mode and LoadUserProfile is set to true. Otherwise, default settings. Each instance currently has it's own copy of the code/config, and it's own data folder (basic file read/writes). 1 instance of this app runs well (operation used for comparison takes ~4 seconds). Every other instance runs slowly (from 10-25 seconds for the same operation). If I move the slower instance to the "fastest" app pool that instance springs to life. If I move the faster instance into the slower app pool that instance slows to a crawl. The app pools were created in the same way initially - manually. I later used the powershell copy routine to ensure an exact copy of the faster app pool and still the same behaviour. Comparing the apppool.config files shows they are identical barring the virtual directory assignments. There are no shared resources that are being blocked, so far as I can tell, and I tested that by shutting down the performant app pool and restarting... slow is still slow, and then when I restart that app pool (so it's loaded last) it's still faster...
