    I've learned today, if you append to your query OPTION (MAXDOP 0) your query will run on multiple processors and if it's huge query, query will perform faster. I know general guidelines on query optimizations (using indexes, selecting only needed fields etc.), my question is about SQL Server optimization. Maybe changing some options in configurations or anything else. What guidelines are there for SQL Server Optimization? Thank you. P.S. I suppose, this is not the right place to ask server related questions. Should I delete it or maybe it can be migrated to serverfault?

  • Proxy Settings per Machine not working on windows server 2008 R2 SP1

    i have a very interesting problem and would appreciate any help for it. In my scenario i have scripts which bring up a VM inside a domain. Now i want to enable internet access for all the VM's and they go through a proxy. I interact with the VM's using remote sessions and use the credentials of a user which belogs to the domain administrator group. Now problem is that, i create VM's on the fly and destroy them as well,and the scripts i run during their lifetime require internet access on them.So i cannot statically set the proxy settings thus i used the option of Active Directory Group Policy Management. I initially used the "User Configuration" option and set the proxy, which worked like a charm when ever i log inside the machine. However it doesn't work if i use to remote login to the machine with an account which has not yet logged in to the machine. So i used this link to configure it to work on Per Machine, the group policy has worked fine and it reflects in the browser too. But i am not able to resolve any dns name like http://www.google.com or any internet based site. Any idea what i can do?

  • Strange permission errors with Windows Server 2008

    I just don't know a better way to describe my issue that is driving me nuts. I am trying to establish a test domain with virtual machines on a box that has Win7 with VMwware workstation installed. The purpouse with this domain will be so that we can try and test different situations before they go into the production network. I build a VM with WinSrv2008R2 and I am using that VM as a template to make other servers for the domain by making clones of it. Now I raise a DC with one clone and a member server with another clone - I add the server to the domain. I am following a standard procedure as always (it is not my first domain). Then I make an admin account and I am adding the admin to be a member of the Domain and Enterprise Admins group. That admin is admin with full priviledges on the DC.. no problem there. But on the other server has ... somewhat half the privileges and I cant log in via RDP. I tryed with another account. Same issues. For example (with half the privileges): I can't open the Even Viewer if I go via Start - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer. But I can open the Even Viewer via the server manager. You can notice this on the image below. I mean WTF??? I am going crazy, I haven't experienced anything similar in my three years of expertise. I already lost 3 days troubleshooting this. Could this be related with the cloning? Perhaps if I make fresh installs of WinSrv2008 there won't be any problems? I've had raised test domains as VMs on other occasions before, and there weren't any problems then. This is VMware Workstation 8. I've made clones before, on Workstation 7 it didn't had any problems. Anyone has any ideas? UPDATE: This is the info from the event log when I try to access via RDP: An account failed to log on.   • sysprep'd Server 2008 R2 VMware autocheck BSODs

    I'm trying to set up a template Server 2k8 R2 (Standard) VM in our VMware ESXi environment, we'll need to deploy a whole lot of them and I want to (a) streamline and (b) standardise the server build process. Originally I built a sysprep answer file using WAIK and the Windows System Image Manager - once I'd run sysprep using this, restarting the machine resulted in a "autochk.exe not found - skipping autocheck" message, followed almost immediately by a BSOD. Rebooting just resulted in the same thing. I first assumed it was my answer file, but have now checked this on a physical machine and it works fine. I've reinstalled the OS on the machine (and NOTHING else), and run sysprep.exe (ticking Generalize) - this produces exactly the same result. I've also attempted to use the Customisation Wizard built in to VMware - again, the same autocheck message and BSOD is the result. Any ideas? Let me know any further information I need to provide...

  • How to enable extended logging for classic asp on IIS7 on Windows 2008 R2

    I had to deploy an application that was not written by me onto the above configuration. It is a rather bizarre hybrid of asp.net and classic asp and it's the classic asp that is proving troublesome. The client is having problems with 500 Internal Server Errors appearing and I can see some of these in the logs but I only get the error code and the page name but little else. What I would like to see is the actual error message to at least give me an idea what is going on (or not going on, depending on your point of view) I don't want to display errors in the browser as I don't know the code well enough and this could (for all I know) display some crazy code where the db password is hard-coded into the site.

  • Plesk on Windows Server 2008 memory usage

    I have a server running IIS and Plesk. There is a problem every day now in which the memory usage of PleskControlPanel.exe and w3wp.exe slowly increases. And at some point all of the sites hosted on the server go down. Restarting Plesk through its panel will reset its memory usage for a while, and restarting IIS will make it last even longer, but there is still the constant memory climbing problem. I cannot see anything by looking through the event viewer. Has anyone ever seen anything like this with Plesk on Windows? Thanks for any help.

I could be an issue with this version (release candidate). Now I am trying to install mysql-5.5.8-winx64 And I have an issue with configuring MySql to work using name pipes I did uncheck use of TCP/IP protocol and configuration wizard just hangs Update: I have found workaround. When remotely logged in, they can disconnect the wireless connection, perform a few tests, and then reconnect the wireless connection. In general, the LAN connection would just be used for the remote login, the wireless connection would be used for performing tests including using a web browser to test certain web sites, etc. How can we successfully configure the server to support 2 network connections like this? (A regular LAN connection + a wireless connection). And also make sure that the tests we perform using the browser utilize the wireless connection for the outgoing internet activity.

  • Java application server behind IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008

    I have a Java application server (GlassFish, indeed, but the problem is the same for any other application server, I guess), running on port 8080. And I have IIS 7.5 listening on port 80 as by default configuration. I want to avoid people typing the port because it's unprofessional. So I want that when somebody types http://myserver the traffic is directed to IIS. And this is how it already works now. But I also want that when somebody types http://myserver/java the traffic is directed to port 8080 and consequently my GlassFish splash screen is displayed. If I have deployed an application on GlassFish under context root app1, typing http://myserver/java/app1 should access the application. How can I do this? I have tried with adding some rules with the URL Rewrite utility from IIS7.5 UI, but this shows the port after the rule has rewritten the url, and I want to avoid it.

Failed to run service as console application This is the file I downloaded from apache: apache-tomcat-7.0.32-windows-x64.zip. I am able to successfully start tomcat on port 8080 as a standalong thing. Meaning I go to command prompt and type startup.bat and it starts up successfully. Question How can I resolve this and what are the things I should be troubleshooting for?

  • Windows 2008 R2 Servers Sending Arp Requests for IPs outside Subnet

    By running a packet capture on my my routers I see some of my servers sending ARP requests for IPs that exist outside of its network. For example if my network is: Network: 8.8.8.0/24 Gateway: 8.8.8.1 (MAC: 00:21:9b:aa:aa:aa) Example Server: 8.8.8.20 (MAC: 00:21:9b:bb:bb:bb) By running a capture on the interface that has 8.8.8.1 I see requests like: Sender Mac: 00:21:9b:bb:bb:bb Sender IP: 8.8.8.20 Target MAC: 00:21:9b:aa:aa:aa Target IP: 69.63.181.58 Anyone seen this behavior before? My understanding of ARP is that requests should only go out for IPs within the subnet... Am I confused in my understanding of ARP? If I am not confused, anyone seen this behavior? Also, these seem to happen in bursts and it doesn't happen when I do something like ping an IP outside of the network. Update: In response to Ian's questions. I am not running anything like Hyper-V. I have multiple interfaces but only one is active (Using BACS failover teaming). The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 (Even if it were something different it wouldn't explain an IP like 69.63.181.58). When I run MS Network Monitor or wireshark I do not see these ARP requests. What happens is that on the router capturing I see a burst of about 10 requests for IPs outside of the network from the host machine. On the machine itself using wireshark or NetMon I see a flood of ARP responses for all the machines on the network. However, I don't see any requests in the capture asking for those responses. So it seems like maybe it is maybe refreshing the arp cache but including IPs that outside of the network. Also when it does this NetMon doesn't show the ARP requests?

  • Server 2008 Likes to restart itself

    I have a weird issue here. I notice about once a week the web server restarts itself. This would be only a minor issue if we were not planning on implementing an IP failover. I have checked the event logs. I don't see anything that indicates a reason for the restart. I need some help diagnosing the reason the server restarts.     I have a two-way, non-transitive trust between two forests and domains, "W2003" and "W2008". In W2008 I have a GPO with user settings linked to a machine OU containing machine "Server". The GPO applies to Authenticated Users. Cross-forest loopback processing is enabled in merge mode. When I log onto Server as User (whose account exists in the W2003 domain), the GPO does not apply. I run RSoP and see that the GPO is "Denied" for the reason "Inaccessible." The GPO name is not listed, but the GUID is. I have checked the file-level permissions on the DC to ensure that User has access to read the GPO's folder and all its contents. What is going on?

  • How do I secure Sql Server 2008 R2

    I have both a dedicated and a VPS (from Fasthosts) virtual server - the web sites/applications I run on these, access Sql Server stored on the same web server. Until now, I have logged onto Sql Server on both the deidicated and VPS server, from Sql Server Management Studio - until I noticed in my server application logs, multiple attempts to logon to Sql Server using the 'sa' username, but failed password. So someone/bot is trying hard (repeatedly every couple of hours, for approx 20 attempts during each instance) to log on... so obviously I have to lock down access to Sql Sever remotely. What I have done is gone into Configuration Manager, and in Sql Server Network Configuration - Protocols for Sql2008 and also in Sql Native Client 10.0 Configuration - Client Protocols - I have diabled Named Pipes, TCP/IP (and VIA by default). I have left Shared Memory enabled. I also disabled in Sql Server Services, the Sql Server Browser. Now the only way I can manage the databases on these servers, is by logging on to them via Remote Desktop. Can anyone confirm if this is the correct way of stopping anyone maliciously logging on to Sql Server? (I'm not a DBA or security expert - and there are hundreds of articles advising all different ways - but I was hoping for the experts here to confirm, or otherwise, if what I've done is correct) Thank you, Mark

    Hello, I am using virtualBox with windows datacenter to play around with some web development. The last time I had to shut down the computer, it installed an update and shut down normally. When I rebooted, it started doing a checkdisk and processed a bunch of files (from hard poweroffs before mabey). Now when I start, I get a bluescreen of death every time it loads (Safe mode,etc) I have googled around for a boot / recovery disk, but can't seem to find one for datacenter. Cheers -Will

  • Restoring permissions on Windows 2008

    I have played with folder permissions due to SVN not being able to write to a folder and now I got into a state where I go to any folder of C: drive in Windows Explorer and when I right-click it takes 30 seconds to show the context menu and it just hangs the window after that. It definitely has something to do with permissions as it was all working fine until I started tweaking permissions about an hour ago. My login belongs to two groups Users and Administrators. I changed ownership of C drive to Administrators group and I think it screwed everything, but I can't change it back because I don't even remember what it was :) Oh, and only Administrators group has access to drive C now. Any way to reset permissions to some previous state or some workable state?

  • Win Server 2008 Hanging on "Applying Computer Settings"

    Applied ~8 updates this morning, and on reboot the server just sits on "Applying Computer Settings". I've let it sit for a max of almost 40m with no response. I hard-booted (/duck) and can get into safe-mode. From there it applies it's updates and is ok. But still on normal boot gets stuck in "applying". I've tried uninstalling the updates from safe-mode with the same reaction. Any insights?

    Hi There, I used to use shared hosting before and I created a google app account and I configured DNS records on shared hosting's contol panel according to google dns documentations. Everything was working until I switched to dedicated server. First I added DNS role to my new server and I configured whole DNS and NS stuff. I have mail address that mail.domain.com that was redirecting to google app email before. Rightnow, It's not possible to access to mail.domain.com addres from somewhere. But I'm accessing from a few point which located some computer on different network. I stacked in this problem. Please, see the below screen shots I checked on DNSStuff.com,everything is green. Also, I checked on InteliWiz, it seems correct And, Here is the my DNS records. I was accessing to my mail.domain.com address from everywhere, Now, I cannot access to mails from many places since 3 week. Where is the my mistake ? Any help would be appriciated.
