  • Windows Server 2008 R2 DFS Root Namespace Required?

    I would prefer to set up our DFS such as: \domain.local\users \domain.local\customers \domain.local\support etc. Is this a problem? Do I need to instead set all of the above folders as targets under a root such as: \domain.local\files\users \domain.local\files\customers \domain.local\files\support Other than the path being shorter in the top example, which is what I would prefer, is there a difference in functionality in Windows DFS between the two examples shown? The installed application is a web application, hosted on IIS. Here's my question: Is there any tool around that is able to compare two boxes installations?   • Windows 2008 Domain Controller - Backup (BDC) to Primary (PDC)

    I have created a new domain controller with my single domain forest. I have also made it DHCP and DNS ready - all 3 services have synchronised with the existing W2K8 domain controller. I even migrated the FSMO roles and thought everything was fine. Indeed all machines on network appear to obtain DHCP and DNS from new server and the AD is working on the new server as my internal website uses it for login authentication. I have just noticed, via BgInfo - Sys Internals - that the new server is showing as "backup" and the old as "primary" - I thought I had already achieved this. Have the FSMO roles swapped back - as I have yet to have removed the old server from AD (dcpromo). Do I need to do anything before I run dcpromo on the old server? Any thoughts appreciated....

    Hi, Apologies if the question appears ambiguous, I have little experience in this area and was after some informed opinions. I am deploying a test scenario of a server/client network and need to make some choices for Server. The client will be a Windows system as it meets the requirements for the client, the server choice has more room for selection. From my experience with Linux in general and the appealing nature of open source for low cost, security etc and the availability and performance of database and web server programs I have been considering CentOS as a server choice. I have the ability to make most of the choices of what software / server packages I wish to install. This includes Active Directory (something I have no experience with). How well does this operate with Windows clients? Am I being too selective and creating unnecessary complication by setting out not to use a Windows Server OS?

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 permissions: Users can't write despite being administrators

    We just set up a new R2 server and created a bunch of local user accounts on it that are part of the administrator's group. We then set permissions on some shares and folders to allow FULL CONTROL to anyone from the administrator's group. However, the users cannot write to these folders when logged on. On some folders on the C:\ they are prompted for consent in order to gain permission to read them. Any ideas? Are there any tools that would help me troubleshoot this?   • Visual Studio 2008/2010 Intellisense disable tab key

    So I've been having problems with my left wrist and working on code for extended period of times, and I've pretty much narrowed the cause down to Intellisense autocomplete and the tab key. Ok, to be fair, I can't blame Intellisense, but constantly reaching over to hit that key is causing problems. I've discovered Enter does the exact same thing in that context, but that's not the key I instinctively reach for. Is it possible to outright disable the function of the tab key in intellisense, so I'm forced to use Enter instead (which I hit without contorting my wrist oddly.) Thanks. P.S. I do have Visual Assist, so if it's not possible in Visual Studio itself, can VAssistX help?

    Hi guys, Is there a quick way to give the local administrator full rights to all folders on the C drive? I am having really hard time with that, I try to give it full rights to some folders (user profiles) but I can't even modify the NTFS permissions in some cases, I get "permission denied" Is there some soft of tutorial or script that will just give the administrator full rights on all folders in the C driver?   • Terminal Server 2008 - Slow File open dialog in Office 2003

    I have yet another small issue that annoys me everyday in our Terminal Server environment. It seems when logging into Terminal Server users report the initial File | Open or File | Save As from within an application such as Word, Excel (2003 edition) is very slow to display the actual dialog box. The dialog appears quickly but it is whited out (sometimes displays not responding in title bar) and unresponsive, it then sits like this for about 20-30 secs before popping into life and displaying all the folders etc. The second time you go to save or open a file it loads almost instantly. Any suggestions or similar problems out there?

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Finding Hidden files that are causing drive to fill up

    What is the best way to find out what files are sucking up so much space? My Windows directory lists its size as 15 GB but when I run a powershell script against it, it shows 40 GB. It seems 40 GB is about right because if I use that 40 GB and add it to the rest of my folders on C I get the 45 GB that is in use. I checked volume shadow copy and that is disabled and there are no volume shadow files listed. My page file is limited to 3 GB. How can I find out what files are taking 25 GB of space? Final Results: We ended up disabling UAC and then the Properties showed the true file size of the Windows folder, as shown in powershell script. This allowed us to drill down to the folder that had the issues... In our case it was in C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\VMware\VDM there were several large dump files, these were the mysterious unknown files in WinDirStat. It turns out our nessus scan is crashing a view service for a couple seconds so it creates a large dump file. So we will try this.. https://discussions.nessus.org/thread/5212

  • Folder Redirection won't load on Windows 7 Machine in Windows 2008 R2 Network

    Okay so redirected profiles don't load exactly, but the computer is joined to the network and it won't display any of the users files on their desktop that are in their redirected profile. I know this because we have a Terminal Server and when the user logs in there, her files appear. I checked the users' profile in Active Directory Users and Computers and compared it with a working users profile. When that didn't turn up any differences, I looked at her computer and found that on the Dial-in tab the Network Access Permission wasn't set to Control access through NPS Network Policy like it was on the other machines on the network; so I selected it, ran gpupdate /force on her machine and rebooted. This did not fix the issue. Is there anything else that could be preventing the redirected files on the users desktop from showing up when the user logs in?

  • Loads of memory in "standby" on Windows Server 2008 R2

    In our SharePoint farm, our Web Front End servers all have loads of memory in "standby" mode, meaning very little is available for our IIS worker process. We have 32 GB of RAM in each of the boxes, and standby memory will creep up to about 28 GB, whereas the IIS worker process only seems to be using about 2 GB. Also, we've seen the machine use the swap file extensively while this memory was in standby, so I am starting to think that this memory in standby mode is stopping IIS from using it, forcing it to swap to disk, causing more performance problems. I used SysInternals RamMap to indentify what is being kept in memory, and it was able to tell me that almost everything in standby memory is of type "Mapped File". When I sort the files listed under the file summary tab in RamMap by file size, the largest files (around a few hundred meg each) are IIS log files and SharePoint log files. I would like to understand which process is loading these files into standby memory and why they are not being released. When I do an iisreset, it does not release the memory. Any ideas? Thanks!

    I am trying to add a domain user. I am doing the following. Expand Security Right click on Logins Select New Login... Login name select search Click on location and select entire directory Type username Click checkname The name goes underlined and add some more info Click OK Click OK I then get the following error: I have found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324321. The Login does exist There is no Duplicate security identifiers Authentication failure I don't think is happening as I can browse AD Case sensitivity should not be the problem as I am doing the checkname and it is correcting it. Not a Local account Name resolution again I can see the AD I have rebooted the server (VM) and the issue is still happening. Any ideas?     On our file server, we want to enable BitLocker so that we can encrypt a single drive and I know that we have to also encrypt the drive the system is installed on. In my tests with VMs, I have to create a partition on the same disk as Windows is installed either before I install Windows or after (I can use the BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool). This tool shrinks the C: drive to make way for a 1.5GB partition. I'm a little concerned about doing this with a live system so wanted to see if it was possible to get BitLocker to use a partition on another drive?

    I've got Win2008 R2 64bit installed on Dell R410 server with 8GB of RAM. Dell Open Manage shows 8GB total and 4GB available for use, In Windows Control Panel, System i see 64bit and 8GB of RAM while in Windows Task Manager at Performance tab there is 4GB of memory available. Dell support has made some checks and told me that if BIOS shows 8Gb of RAM and indeed BIOS does then it's operational system issue. Tried to search online for resolution but none found. Please help, thanks

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Replication log reader could not execute sp_replcmds

    This log reader agent worked perfectly for several months until the user referenced in the error was removed from the domain. After that time the error 'The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'SERVER'' was received with more detail 'Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user' that referenced said user. This user was referenced nowhere in the the log reader agent other than the Publication Access List from which it was subsequenctly removed. The agent would still not successfully start up. The simple problem here, I believe, is that the log reader agent was created under that user and that no longer exists in the domain. Is there an 'owner' somewhere that needs to be changed? Every other function on the database continues to execute successfully. Any other help or thought would be appreciated.

  • Windows 2003 DC to Windows 2008 R2 DC with same name and same IP

    Environment = Windows 2003 native domain with 8 DCs I've got an old domain controller that is running 2003, CA Enterprise role, DHCP, DNS, a few GPO scripts that point to shares on it, and some other minor functions. All our servers point to it as their primary DNS, and there's lots of references to its IP or name throughout the domain at this point (8+ years later). I really don't feel like manually changing all of this, it would be a pretty massive undertaking. I want to follow this guide: http://msmvps.com/blogs/acefekay/archive/2010/10/09/remove-an-old-dc-and-introduce-a-new-dc-with-the-same-name-and-ip-address.aspx to hopefully end up with basically an "in-place upgrade" so to say. I considered just doing a P2V of the box, but we don't really want to keep it around running 2003 to be honest. I also considered using a CNAME and adding a 2nd IP (the old one) but again, it seemed like it would be cleaner using the attached link. My actual question: Any gotchas or big caution signs when doing what the link suggests? Anyone gone down this road and have advice on how to proceed?

    I am attempting to setup a RD Gateway for a client. When I first set it up I noticed that IIS did not have the 'Defualt Web Site' so I created it and assigned it an id of 1 and set the bindings to port 80 and 443. I then re installed the RD Gateway role with the idea that it would then configure IIS correctly. It did not. How would I go about making sure a re install of the Remote Desktop Gateway role configures IIS correctly? I cannot re install IIS as there is a site that is already on there that I cannot take down

  • Server 2008 unresponsive after SP2 install.

    I have a dev server that has an exact image of a production web server. The prod server only has SP1 installed on it. When I first fired up the dev box, the first thing I did was install SP2, and let it be. Almost every morning when I came in, the server was unusable. It would respond to ping, but RDP and the web site running on it were down. On the screen the screen saver was bouncing around, so it wasn't hard locked. But it was unresponsive to keyboard and mouse. So now I have to hard shut it down, but when it comes back up, the only thing in the event viewer is the unexpected shutdown, nothing else. I've since taken a fresh image of my prod box and put it on the dev server, and not installed SP2, and the dev box is humming along perfectly. I should also note that this is Server2k8 Web, 64bit Has anyone else seen anything like this?
