• Windows XP boot: black screen with cursor after BIOS screen

  Here is a weird one, Got computer with Windows XP. It's getting stuck on a black screen with cursor blinking. What did I do: - Boot from installation CD (recovery option - command line): chkdsk C: /R copy D:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ copy D:\i386\ntldr c:\ fixmbr fixboot Chkdsk showed 0 bad sectors and no problems during scan. dir on C:\ shows all directories and files in place (Windows, Program Files, Documents and Settings). BIOS shows correct boot drive. Still does not boot. Not sure what to think of. Please help. UPDATE: Just performed these steps: Backed up current disk C: (without MBR) using True Image to external hard drive Ran Windows XP clean installation with deleting all partitions and creating new one. Hard drive booted fine into Windows GUI installation!!! Then: Interrupted installation. Booted from True Image recovery CD and restored archive of disk C to an new partition. Same issue with black screen.

Trying to implement the command myself rendered the following error message: The system cannot find the file specified. The command I am trying to run is here: for /f %i in ('dir /a-d /o-n /b O:\OrdersExport\Order*.txt') do @type %i C:\Users\Admin\Documents\OrderImport.txt The error does not appear if I browsed to the folder in question first: C:\O: C:\cd OrdersImport I simply want one line to copy from destination to that single file. • Should websites live in /var/ or /usr/ according to recommended usage?

  According to a guide on the Linux directory structure, /usr/ is for application files, and /var/ is for files that change (I assume this means "files that belong to the applications"). Is this correct? If this is the case then I'm a little torn between using either. A website is an application (if it's dynamic, so to speak), but in other cases it is just a collection of files used by Apache. The default www dir lives in /var/www/, so should we follow suit by using /var/websites/ (or something similar), or choose /usr/websites/ since they could be applications? This is a very trivial question, but it's bugging me nonetheless. For our case, I'm leaning toward /usr/web or something like that, since our websites are all applications. Update: This is for our company websites; it's not a shared hosting server, so we don't need to worry about separating them in /home/ or anything like that.

  I have a LG smart Tv with browser. I need the tv browser to connect to a uk based proxy server on port 808. Unfortunately there is no option within tv to setup proxy for its browser. Now the Tv connects via a wireless connection to the internet. IE: TV <- D-Link DIR-605L <- ADSL <- WWW. Is it possible to setup this wireless router to connect the TV to the Proxy ?? If so ? where ? and what setings do i need to change in the wireless router ?? In short my question is ? How do i get the wireless router to make up for the lack of proxy connectivity within my Tv browser ?? • Pass quoted argument string to Start-Process in PowerShell

  Hello I'm trying to very simply run an executable and pass a file path in as the first argument. In DOS, this would be the command: import.exe "C:\Some Path\With\Spaces.txt" By placing the path in quotes, the path is correctly parsed as the first token into the executable. In PowerShell I'm using this: $feeds = dir 'T:\Documents\Company\Product Development\Data foreach ($feed in $feeds) { start -FilePath import.exe -ArgumentList $feed.FullName } The problem with the Start-Process cmdlet in PowerShell is that it uses a string array for arguments, so the path is broken up and sent to the executable as separate tokens. Quotes in PowerShell force $feed.FullName to be treated literally. Double quotes "" make PowerShell not see anything in the argument list. "The argument is null or empty." it tells me. I expect that this is a known headache and has had a known workaround from day one. Thanks Luke

  Hello, I would like to track my $HOME dir with git. I've got many other git repos in other subdirs (eg $HOME/projects/repo_1 and so on), which shouldn't be tracked, since they already are. I have found git-home-history but it appears from the archive that the project is no longer actively developed. What approach do you recommended ? Is ghh mature enough? I am on a Mac but I am interested in cross platform solutions, too.   Hi All. First question here on superuser. I sometimes get ad-hoc bug reports from customers, which I need to transfer to our online bug tracker. Works fine for text, but pictures are tedious. I'm looking for a solution to copy-paste images from documents (like excel sheets) in a way that if you paste an image to a file input (or text input) on a html page, the file will automatically be written to disk (tmp dir), and the path written to the file input field. This question is related to Directly paste clipboard image into gmail message, but I would like to ask if there is a solution using a local program only. I'm interested in solutions for all OS's.

• How can I do `dir *.mp3` in bash?

  Hi all, On Windows I used to quickly run a dir *.mp3 to find all files with an mp3 extension in the current directory. Is there a similarly quick way to do it with bash? The ls command seems to have a way to ignore a pattern, but not to show only the pattern. I can do find . -maxdepth 1 -iname '*.mp3' or ls|grep -i '\.mp3$' but neither of these flow out of my fingers in half a second or less;) Any quicker alternatives? TIA Andy

• Rails: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'

  So I've got a Ruby on Rails application that I am trying to run (in development) on Snow Leopard. I've got it working on my Ubuntu computer, but now I need to get my Snow Leopard environment set up. Originally, I installed the MySQL 2.8.1 Ruby Gem and was running into this issue: uninitialized constant MysqlCompat::MysqlRes But thanks to this tutorial I was able to resolve it by running this command and installing a previous version of the Gem: export ARCHFLAGS="-arch i386 -arch x86_64" ;sudo gem install --no-rdoc --no-ri -v=2.7 mysql -- --with-mysql-dir=/usr/local/mysql --with-mysql-config=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config Now that I've resolved that issue, I'm running into a different error: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' This happens when I try to run rake db:migrate as well as when the server is running. How can I resolve this issue?

  When attempting to ./configure PHP 5.3.3 on Ubuntu 8.04, I get the error: checking for libevent >= 1.4.11 install prefix... configure: error: Could not find libevent >= 1.4.11 in /usr/local/ I tried installing the libevent-dev and libevent1 packages, but same error. I then removed the packages, downloaded and compiled libevent from source. Same error. Locate shows that libevent was installed to /usr/local/lib/libevent.so with all its friends in /usr/local/lib/. I tried configuring with the option: --with-libevent-dir=/usr/local/lib/ Basically the same error: checking for libevent >= 1.4.11 install prefix... configure: error: Could not find libevent >= 1.4.11 in /usr/local/lib/ Any suggestions??

  I'm going to install a CentOS6 Server with Virtualization ( libvirtd ) capabilities on a DELL Server with Hardware RAID5 of around 6T of disk space ( It has 4x2T disks in a PERC700 RAID Controller ). I'm going then to install some guests which requires few resources except one that needs 500GB of disk space, 8/16GB of RAM and good performances. I was thinking about file images for guests storage but I'm not sure about the 500GB VM what needs good performances so that an LVM device could be better. So my question is what would be the best layout concerning: RAID setup ( RAID5, RAID1 + 1 disk for OS only. ) disk partitioning ( using the entire disk/ leave free space for future use and extending it with LVM ) guests storage management ( LVM devices or file images ( considering the 500GB VM that is performance demanding ) or mixed ) Where to put guests storage? /var/lib/libvirt/images or maybe in a custom dir separated from system /home/VMs Thanks in advance for any hint.

  I'd like a multi-line zsh prompt with a right alined part, that will look something like this: 2.nate@host:/current/dir 16:00 -> I know about RPROMPT in zsh, but that has a right-aligned prompt opposite your normal prompt, which is on the same line of text as your typing. Is there a way to have a right-aligned portion to the first line of a multi-line command prompt? I'm looking for either a directive in the PS1 variable that says 'right align now' or a variable that is to PS1 what RPROMPT is to PROMPT. Thanks!

• How can we achive a 403 Permissions Denied for a subdomain?

  We have a multisite installed in the root directory (multisite.com) and also a wordpress single installation on a subdomain (help.multisite.com) In the root .htaccess we placed: #START Security: Disallow access to folders Options All -Indexes # END Security On the main site (as expected we get) "403 Permission Denied. You do not have permission for this request /wp-content/blogs.dir/83/" Nice. :) BUT. We just noticed that when trying to access the subdomains folders we get: Internal Server Error. The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.... Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error... This is something we do NOT want. So the question is: How can we avoid the above result and make the message for the subdomains be "403 Permission Denied" (the same as for the main site and NOT "500 Internal Server Error" (as it is now)? We put what, where?

  I'm testing reposman.rb on the command-line (before I make it a cron job): /usr/sbin/reposman.rb --svn-dir=/var/svn \ --redmine-host=http://example.com/projects --key='redacted' \ --owner='nobody' --group='nobody' It succeeded, printing messages for projects that didn't have repos yet: repository /var/svn/project1 created repository /var/svn/project2 created And printed nothing after running the same command again, indicating it remembered the repos. However, if I look at the Repository settings in Redmine for project1 and project2, they aren't set. Although the SVN repo is created, the Redmine projects aren't configured. How do I get reposman.rb to automatically configure Redmine projects to use the repos after they're set up?

  Hello, I'm using Win XP and I'm trying to connect by SSH to remote host using RSA key. I've investigated that cygWin recognizes Documents and Settings dir as home directory Z:\app\cwRsync\bin>cygpath -H /cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings I've created .ssh directory in Documents and Settings/user/.ssh and moved known_hosts, id_rsa, id_rsa.pub there. Now, I'm trying to connect via ssh.exe to remote host Z:\app\cwRsync\bin>ssh -p 22 [email protected] Could not create directory '/home/user/.ssh'. The authenticity of host '[remotehost.com]:22 ([remotehost.com]:22)' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is f7:f4:2c:e0:c6:7e:d2:a4:45:70:63:df:bf:f2:84:46. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? What I'm doing wrong? Why ssh.exe couldn't create directory /home/user/.ssh? Thank you.

  Hi All, I have just purchased windows 7 64bit. I entered the disk in the drive and it told me I couldn't upgrade as I am using XP so I have tried to boot from CD instead but it doesn't work. It seems to look at the disk for a few seconds and then ends up at a screen saying windows failed to start and then I hit enter and it loads windows XP again. Does anyone know what could cause this?   Hey Guys, I'm not a server guru (unfortunately) but have a decent knowledge of linux & bsd. I'm trying to symlink multiple instances of HLDS (game server) but need to exclude certain folders & config files to achieve this properly. I need to do it this way as HLDS loads many mods automatically, and putting an exception to disable the mods doesnt work for all of them. so basically i want: /home/user/hlds-install (the base install) /home/user/server1 /home/user/server2 etc... and then be able to manually put any configs/mods ive excluded into the server dir's so that each server can be configured individually. Can anyone tell me how to do this, perhaps some sort of bash script so that I can just change the targets to run it each time i want to create a new one. I have quite a number to make so doing the whole thing manually for each one definately isn't an option and im all for working smarter, not harder! Thanks :)

You have to edit your php.ini file and add new extension "extension=php_imagick.dll" 4.) Save ini file and restart apache server. (If necessary, restart your windows) 5.) phpinfo() should show imagick enabled. after that I execute a sample script but its not working. it shows the Imagic class missing error. Please help me to install Imagick. :-(
