  Like many of you, I learn best by getting my hands dirty.  When confronted with the task of understanding a new set of products and technologies and figuring out how they might apply to a vertical industry like healthcare, I set out to create a demonstration.  The video that follows aims to show how the Oracle embedded software portfolio can be applied to a healthcare application.  The demonstration utilizes among others, Java SE Embedded, Berkeley DB, Apache Tomcat, Oracle 11gR2 and Oracle Database Mobile Server. Eric Jensen gives a great critique and description of the demo here.  To sum it up, we aim to show how live medical data can be collected on a medical device, stored in a local database, synchronized to a master database and furthermore propagated to a mobile phone (Android) application.  Come take a look!

• Why is it always "what language should I learn next" instead of "what project should I tackle next"?

  Hi all, Why do beginning programmers (like me) always ask about the next language they should learn instead of asking about the next project to tackle? Why did Eric Raymond, in the "Learn How To Program" section of his "How To Become A Hacker" essay, talk about the order in which you should learn languages (vs. the order in which you should tackle projects). Do beginning carpenters ask "I know how to use a hammer ... should I learn how to use a saw or a level next?" I ask because I'm finding that almost any meaningful project I'm interested in tackling (e.g. a web app, a set of poker analysis tools) requires that I learn just enough of a multitude of languages (Python, C, HTML, CSS, Javascript, SQL) and frameworks/libraries (wxPython, tkinter, Django) to implement them.   Impressed by a cool feature I didn't know about. If you have some JavaBean, like my Event class below, you can right-click it and choose "BeanInfo Editor": Now, as you can see above, I don't have a BeanInfo class. So I am now asked whether the IDE should create one for me. So I say OK and then I have a new BeanInfo class, generated from my Event class, as well as a multiview editor for visually editing the BeanInfo class: Thanks Eric and Nicklas from Artificial Solutions in Stockholm for pointing this out to me today. It comes in very handy in NetBeans Platform applications when you're working with a BeanNode and want to customize the display of your properties.

• Is Domain Driven Design useful / productive for not so complex domains?

  When assessing a potential project at work, I suggested that it might be advantageous to use a domain driven design approach to its object model. The project does not have an excessively complex domain, so my coworker threw this at me: It has been said, that DDD is favorable in instances where there is a complex domain model (“...It applies whenever we are operating in a complex, intricate domain” Eric Evans). What I'm lost on is - how you define the complexity of a domain? Can it be defined by the number of aggregate roots in the domain model? Is the complexity of a domain in the interaction of objects? The domain that we are assessing is related online publishing and content management.

• FTP timeout only the first time

  I'm using PureFTPd on MacOSX (Snow Leopard, not server version). When trying to access the FTP account from the outside via dyndns (e.g. using https://www.wormly.com/test_ftp_server) the connection always times out the FIRST time. When I try AGAIN in the next few seconds it works. What is this about? I have forwarded the ports to my apple router and tried disabling the OSX firewall as well. Thanks for any advice. Dennis

The post-commit doc explicitly lists the following: # POST-COMMIT HOOK # # The post-commit hook is invoked after a commit. Subversion runs # this hook by invoking a program (script, executable, binary, etc.) # named 'post-commit' (for which this file is a template) with the # following ordered arguments: # # [1] REPOS-PATH (the path to this repository) # [2] REV (the number of the revision just committed) So I made the following command to test: REPOS="$1" REV="$2" echo "Updated project $REPOS to $REV" However when I edit files in Project1 for example, this outputs "Updated project /home/flx/svn/flxdev to 1016" I'd like this to be: "Updated project Project1 to 1016" Having this variable allows me to specify to do different actions per project post-commit. • How to start Internet Explorer 8 without any bars

  Hi. At work I use LogMeIn to do remote assistance for our customers. The only thing which is bugging me is that you can switch to fullscreen mode but it doesn't offer to open the remote session in a new window without address bar, bookmarks bar and stuff. So I'm looking for a way to open the LogMeIn Tech Console in a new browser window without any bars. Fullscreen mode is nice but not usable when working with other applications besides the remote session. The Internet Explorer Kiosk mode also doesn't fit my needs. I created a bookmarklet with works quite nice but having a link directly on my desktop would be perfect. Does anyone have a hint on that? I use IE8 on Windows XP SP3. Thx in advance Dennis

• #TechEd 2010

  It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America.  I always love my time here.  First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather).   I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event.  It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome.  The night life is hoppin’.  In addition to enjoying a few (too many??) of the local hurricanes in New Orleans, I have hung out with some of the coolest people  Deepesh Mohnani, David Poll, Viresh, Alan Stephens, Shawn Wildermuth, Greg Leonardo, Doug Seven, Chris Willams, David Carley and some of our southcentral hero’s Jeffery Palermo, Todd Anglin, Shawn Weisfeld, Randy Walker, The midnight DBA’s, Zeeshan Hirani, Dennis Bottjer just to name a few. A big thanks to Microsoft and everyone that has helped to put TechEd together.  I have loved hanging out with people from the Silverlight and Expression Teams and have learned a ton.  I am ramped up and ready to take all that knowledge back to my co-workers and my community. I can not wait to see you all again next year in Atlanta!!!
