  • Have you tried to switch to different kind of language and find a job in a "new language" ?

    I'm a Java programmer(J2EE/JEE), but I'm thinking about switching to C#. Does any of you have been in my position and have switched from Java to C# or C# to Java or C++ to Java, etc. ?? I'm NOT asking about switching between the same kind of languages, for example Java to Groovy/Scala/JRuby, C++ to C, VB to C#, C# to IronRuby/F#/VB.NET. Or if you company was C++, but has moved to Java(you had no choice and I'm about to make a choice). Side question: How hard was it to get a job in a "new language"?

  • Using C++ but not using the language's specific features, should switch to C?

    I'm developing a NES emulator as a hobby, in my free time. I use C++ because is the language I use mostly, know mostly and like mostly. But now that I made some advance into the project I realize I'm not using almost any specific features of C++, and could have done it in plain C and getting the same result. I don't use templates, operator overloading, polymorphism, inheritance. So what would you say? should I stay in C++ or rewrite it in C? I won't do this to gain in performance, it could come as a side effect, but the idea is why should I use C++ if I don't need it? The only features of C++ I'm using is classes to encapsulate data and methods, but that can be done as well with structs and functions, I'm using new and delete, but could as well use malloc and free, and I'm using inheritance just for callbacks, which could be achieved with pointers to functions. Remember, it's a hobby project, I have no deadlines, so the overhead time and work that would require a re-write are not a problem, might be fun as well. So, the question is C or C++?

    If the player step on Button-Tile when its true, it become false. If the player step on Button-Tile when its false, it become true. The problem is, when the player stand on (intersect) the Button-Tile, it will keep updating the condition. So, from true, it become false. Because its false and player intersect on it, it become true again. True-false-true-false and so on. I use ElapsedGameTime to make the updating process slower, and player can have a chance to change the Button to true or false. However, its not a solution I was looking for. Is there any other way to make it keep in False/True condition while the Player standing on it (The Button tile) ?

  • Should I switch my graphics mode in the BIOS to avoid using Bumblebee?

    I have just purchased a Acer 3830TG, the timeline X series. To my surprise I found out that there is no first-party support for nvidia optimus for linux. Bumblebee works great, but the battery life from the graphics card always running is not so great. I don't use linux for games so i don't really need the graphics card on, I have Windows for that. In my bios, I have the ability to change my graphics mode from switchable to integrated. If I do this, reinstall ubuntu, what will happen? Will my nvidia card just turn off? Will everything work properly, as if i'm not running an optimus laptop? Is this recommended as opposed to dealing with bumblebee? What is the best thing I could do?

    I can't deploy/manage my Joomla websites On Ubuntu 12.04 Zend Server PHP 5.3.14 due to permissions during Joomla installation/J! extensions installation. All files are unwriteable. Only CHMOD 777 will help but of course it's not resolving the problem due to security issues. I think it's because cgi-fcgi is not shipped with Zend Server (only with Zend Server for Windows) Or maybe there is different solution how to make it work?     While I was looking for a battery management utility for my Dell E5420, I came to read this post - How can I limit battery charging to 80% capacity? . Sofar, I haven't found one that relates to my laptop. So, I wonder now if any battery manager utility can be found for my laptop specified above. I would be happy if someone could point me if such utility is available under Ubuntu 12.04 that can stop charging a battery at a certain percentage and to ONLY use A/C mode. Again, to start using battery mode when the A/C is off or when the battery level reaches at certain level. Thanks for all your help. Elim.

    Ok so the basic issue here is this: My wireless has not once enabled through many environments. Wubi install: Enable wireless greyed out Live cd: greyed out Partition alongside win7: greyed out. I installed all software updates, checked additional drivers, installed the latest driver for RTL8111/8168B. rfkill list shows phy0 and phy1. Phy0 has a hardblock on. everything else is unblocked. Now consider this also: I have both a wireless adapter inside my laptop and a wireless usb adapter outside. The internal adapter does not work, hence why I think hardblock is on even if the external slider in 'on'. I have tried commands such as rfkill unblock all as well as sudo rfkill unblock all. No wireless options in the BIOS. I have tried another laptop and desktop and they get wireless from the get go. Ubuntu on my laptop seems to see my belkin adapter as well as my internal (ralink) one. But trying to scan networks yields no results and says network is down always. Ubuntu version: 12.04 lts Ask me anything else you may need to help me, thanks.

  • What is the point of PPPoE?

    I am trying to expand my knowledge of networking beyond the basics. I have started reading about PPP, and how it is used in DSL modems with PPPoE and PPPoA. My first impression of PPP was "well that seems pretty similar to Ethernet". They are both data link layer protocols. They both have fields to identify the encapsulated protocol (e.g. IP). They both have related protocols to assign IP addresses (DHCP and NCP). So my first question was "so what's the point of PPP, why not just use Ethernet?". The answer to that was fairly straightforward - Ethernet is not supported over a wide range of media like serial lines, and is a fairly specific technology to LAN's using CAT5 or similar. HOWEVER - then I was reading about PPPoE, and the obvious thought was "well if we are doing something over Ethernet, then Ethernet must be available and in use, so why not just use it?". In other words, PPPoE seems to be encapsulating one data-link layer protocol in another very similar protocol. Why do IP-inside-PPP-inside-Ethernet when we could just be doing IP-inside-Ethernet, and use DHCP rather than NCP to assign the IP address to the home router? Thanks

  • Resolving loss of internet bandwidth in home network

    Recently, I've decided to connect my laptop at home to my modem/router through Ethernet cables built into my apartment. As these built-in Ethernet cables are usable via plugs built into the walls (called powerline adapters), I use some additional cabling (STP CAT6 cables) from my laptop/router to the plugs. In addition, I don't know any technical details about these built-in cables (as they're not visible), only the maximal bandwidth (1 GBit = Cat6?) that they're supporting. The built-in cables are Cat. 5e Ethernet cables. The problem is now that when I set up the connection, I cannot use the full bandwidth that my internet connection is actually offering (100 Mbit/s), only about 85 Mbit/s between 85 - 88 Mbit/s, despite the fact that all cables involved should support the maximal bandwidth. I know from other tests with one of the Ethernet cables in use that I can use almost 99 Mbit/s when I connect my laptop directly to the router/modem using only this one cable. In addition, it is very unlikely that the length of the resulting cable connection from my laptop to my router involving the built-in cables exceeds 100 m. So, what possible reasons for this loss of bandwidth exist? And how I can fix this issue? I hope this might help resolve the issue: The built-in cables appear to be Cat. 5e Ethernet cables. So, is there any problem when I connect Cat6 Ethernet cables directly to Cat5e Ethernet cables via the plugs?

  • LIBPCAP and WIRESHARK Capture on PPP

    Hi, I have written a small bridge program using LIBPCAP API. I have installed Winpcap 3.1 Beta for support in order to capture from a PPP interface. What i do is, I capture from the PPP interface through my LIBPCAP program and send the traffic to another Ethernet interface in my computer. Then i connect this Ethernet Interface to another Ethernet Interface at another computer where i monitor it through Wireshark. So in short my PPP-Ethernet Bridge is on computer 1. And Another computer2 directly connected to computer1 on Ethernet monitors the incoming traffic from the bridge through wireshark. The problem i face is that when i capture PPP traffic through wireshark in computer1, i see reasonable delay between the packets. But when i use my LIBPCAP program to capture and relay traffic and check the traffic on computer 2 using Wireshark it gives jumps of 0.5seconds delay after some packets. This is quite unexplainable to me. I dont understand how wireshark PPP direct capture on computer 1 does not give delay and LIBPCAP program is giving delay. I have checked my bridge for Ethernet to Ethernet relaying and there is no delay like the one i am experiencing in case of PPP-Ethernet. a higher delay between packets is acceptable but such a BIG delay after a couple of packets is unacceptable.     I'm looking for a new router to provide a VPN tunnel for my home network. My plan is to pass all internet traffic over a PPTP VPN provided by the router, which should ensure that the connection stays alive and only passes traffic over that protocol. I'm normally quite a fan of Draytek routers, and their 2710n does seem to feature VPN dial-out but it lacks Gigabit ports (though I can make do with that if the VPN support is good enough). Has anyone got any suggestions or personal experience in a similar setup? I'm happy to consider anything that supports dd-wrt (as I believe that supports VPN-out, though I may be wrong). Bonus points for models available in the UK.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 Ethernet Jumbo Frame(9k MTU) Support?

    Has anyone been able to use jumbo frame support on their 2010 Macbook Pros? This is kind of negative news here, but I am seeing many reports that this is not available anymore due to Apple's choice of network card in the new machines. I cannot set my MTU speed over 1500 on my new 2010 MBP i7, but my old early 2008 MBP (Core2) has the 9000 MTU setting for use. Everything I have is setup to use jumbo frames and I thought apple kept that feature in their "pro" lineup. It sounds like the Mac Pro still has it. Did they decide to use a chipset that doesn't support it? I am trying to pinpoint some solid chipset numbers and the feature support. Maybe they just need to update the drivers? Is there some more official information about this feature? This might seem minor, but this is really frustrating if apple removed this feature from their pro laptop line.   • How to run Android-x86 project's ISO in VirtualBox with ethernet?

    I managed to find a way just days ago, but I had to leave my other PC and now I have no clue how to get it working again. Basically you have to get the image, then install it in a VirtualBox guest. Now the problem is ... when you launch your VM, there is no internet connection. No with NAT or Bridged. Tried all the network cards too. Since internet connection is crucial for Android development, I have to get this thing working. (As I said, I managed to fix it once.) I'm using: - The 4.0 RC1 images from Android-x86 - VirtualBox - Eclipse 4.2 Juno with the latest Android ADT - Android SDK v18 - upgraded to 19 via the Package manager. Now I seen a lot of different builds on the net, about different Android builds for VirtualBox. I have checked Buildroid for example, but there is no network connection. I have imported the virtual machine just as the howto said. The extension package is also installed and it's up to date.

Iptables on ETH_ROUTER: Added a port forward (DNAT) from eth0.1 to eth0.2: iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -i eth0.1 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.X.Y iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -o eth0.2 -s 10.0.X.0/24 -j MASQUERADE Stateful firewall w/ overall drop policy on FORWARD chain, hence: iptables -I FORWARD -i eth0.1 -d 10.0.X.Y -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT Can ping from ETH_ROUTER to BRIDGED_DEVICE but unable to reach the web server from Internet. I see packet cont increasing for the DNAT rule but not sure where it disappears in the ETH_ROUTER after that. ETH_ROUTER is the only device that can be configured to achieve this. If familiar with this scenario, please suggest what I may be missing or doing wrong here or suggest techniques to debug?
