• jQuery works in FF but not in Safari

  I have some event handlers that work in FF and not in Safari. Simply put, I have a list of friends, some hard-coded, some pulled in from a database. Clicking on a buddy opens a chat window... this is much like the Facebook chat system. So in Firefox, everything works normally and as expected. • What's the difference between the box-model bug and the new box-sizing CSS?

  In days (long past for some, and still present for others) the box-model bug was a bane to their existence. The idea that an element's width included the margin, border, and padding was blasphemous and an abomination to their senses. So we got away from it after thousands of internet blogs about the box-model hack. Now we get box-sizing, which will, wait for it, allow you to specify that a width contains the border, the margin, and the padding. We plaster a trendy new name for it, "CSS3 Flexbox," and now it's the freedom designers have been looking for. For those logical people who saw the box-model bug as not the bug and the W3C as the actual bug, this comes as a surprise. A reintroduction of this so-called bug and now we call it an enhancement? So can someone explain why this is different? I am honestly confused about this.

• Is there an IE8 setting or policy to make it work like IE7 with respect to persistent connections?

  I am working with a commercial application running on XP using IIS 5.1. Periodically the application is returning an IIS error "There are too many people accessing the Web site at this time." This is caused by Microsoft artificially limiting the number of connections (10) under IIS 5.1 under Windows XP, but in this case, there is really only one user (albeit a few tabs open at a time). Microsoft suggests you can reduce the problem by turning off HTTP Keep-Alives for that particular web site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262635 If you use IIS 5.0 on Windows 2000 Professional or IIS 5.1 on Microsoft Windows XP Professional, disable HTTP keep-alives in the properties of the Web site. When you do this, a limit of 10 concurrent connections still exists, but IIS does not maintain connections for inactive users. I may do that; however, I'm worried about performance degradation. However, I also notice that IE8 appears to handle this differently than IE7. By default, IE6 and IE7 use 2 persistent connections while IE8 uses 6. Perhaps in this case IE8 itself is generating multiple connections in an attempt to be faster, but those additional connections are overwhelming the artificially limited IIS 5.1 on XP? Assuming that is the case, is there an Internet Explorer option, registry setting, or policy I can set to force IE8 to behave like IE7 with respect to persistent connections? I would not set this for all users, but for the small number of users that used this application, it might solve their intermittent problem until the application can be rehosted on Windows Server 2008. • Chaining CSS classes in IE6 - Trying to find a jQuery solution?

  Right, perhaps I ask the impossible? I consider myself fairly new to Javscript and jQuery, but that being said, I have written some fairly complex code recently so I am definitely getting there... however I am now possed with a rather interesting issue at my current freelance contract. The previous web coder has taken a Grid-960 approach to the HTML and as a result has used chained classes to style many of the elements. The example below is typical of what can be found in the code: <div class='blocks four-col-1 orange highlight'>Some content</div> And in the css there will be different declarations for: (not actual css... but close enough) .blocks {margin-right:10px;} .orange {background-image:url(someimage.jpg);} .highlight {font-weight:bold;} .four-col-1 {width:300px;} and to make matters worse... this is in the CSS: .blocks.orange.highlight {background-colour:#dd00ff;} Anyone not familiar with this particular bug can read more on it here: http://www.ryanbrill.com/archives/multiple-classes-in-ie/ it is very real and very annoying. Without wanting to go into the merrits of not chaining classes (I told them this, but it is no longer feasible to change their approach... 100 hand coded pages into a 150 page website, no CMS... sigh) and without the luxury of being able to change the way these blocks are styled... can anyone advise me on the complexity and benefits between any of my below proposed approaches or possible other options that would adequately solve this problem. Potential Solution 1 Using conditional comments I am considering loading a jquery script only for IE6 that: Reads the class of all divs in a certain section of the page and pushes to an array creates empty boxes off screen with only one of the classes applied at a time Reads the applied CSS values for each box Re-applies these styles to the individual box, somehow bearing in mind the order in which they are called and overwriting conflicting instructions as required Potential Solution 2 read the class of all divs in a certain section of the page and push to an array Scan the document for links to style sheets Ajax grab the stylesheets and traverse looking for matching names to those in class array Apply styles as needed Potential Solution 3 Create an IE6 only stylesheet containing the exact style to be applied as a unique name (ie: class='blocks orange highlight' becomes class='blocks-orange-highlight') Traverse the document in IE6 and convert all spaces in class declarations to hyphens and reapply classes based on new style name Summary: Solution 1 allows the people at this company to apply any styles in the future and the script will adjust as needed. However it does not allow for the chained style to be added, only the individual style... it is also processor intensive and time consuming, but also the most likely to be converted into a plugin that could be used the world over Solution 2 is a potential nightmare to code. But again will allow for an endless number of updates without breaking Solution 3 will require someone at the companty to hardcode the new styles every time they make a change, and if they don't, IE6 will break. Ironically the site, whilst needing to conform to IE6 in a limited manner, does not need to run wihtout javascript (they've made the call... have JS or go away), so consider all jQuery and JS solutions to be 'game on'. Did I mention how much i hate IE6? Anyway... any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. I will continue to develop my own solution and if I discover one that can be turned into a jQuery plugin I will post it here in the comments. Regards, Mike.

It seems that in IE6, one can't do this: div { position: absolute; left: 0px; right: 0px; } or this: div { position: absolute; top: 0px; bottom: 0px; } Absolute positions cannot be set for left and right or top and bottom at the same time. This is terrible, because that is pretty much the basis of my site design. The HTML can be viewed on the site, and the CSS is in /style.css. I'd like to fix this without invalidating my CSS or HTML. Can this be done? Another problem is that my content uses min-width and max-width to avoid over-stretching or compressing the content within. IE6 can't do min-width, so how can I replicate this behavior?

• Eclipse doesn’t recognize style in the Android Layout builder?

  Since Android supports styles and it's good practice to use them (similar to CSS), I made a new style and applied it to 3 buttons. The Layout builder in Eclipse did not register the changes and either broke (showed nothing) or didn't apply styles at all. After running the app in the emulator, styles are correctly applied. So is there something I'm missing or the Android plugin doesn't support styles?

• Maven2 - problem with pluginManagement and parent-child relationship

Plugin Management contains plugin elements in much the same way, except that rather than configuring plugin information for this particular project build, it is intended to configure project builds that inherit from this one. However, this only configures plugins that are actually referenced within the plugins element in the children. The children have every right to override pluginManagement definitions. Now : if I have this in my parent POM <build> <pluginManagement> <plugins> <plugin> <artifactId>maven-dependency-plugin</artifactId> <version>2.0</version> <executions> Some stuff for the children </execution> </executions> </plugin> </plugins> </pluginManagement> </build> and I run mvn help:effective-pom on the parent project I get what I want, namely the plugins part directly under build (the one doing the work) remains empty. In effect what I want is for the pluginManagement to behave exactly as the documentation states, that is I want it to apply for children only but not for the project in which it is declared. As a corrolary, is there a way I can override the parts from the pluginManagement by declaring the plugin in the normal build section of a project ? whatever I try I get that the section is added to executions but I cannot override one that exists already. EDIT: I never did find an acceptable solution for this and as such the issue remains open. Closest solution was offered below and is currently the accepted solution for this question until something better comes up. Right now there are three ways to achieve the desired result (modulate plugin behaviour depending on where in the inheritance hierarchy the current POM is): 1 - using profiles, it will work but you must beware that profiles are not inherited, which is somewhat counter intuitive. They are (if activated) applied to the POM where declared and then this generated POM is propagated down. As such the only way to activate the profile for child POM is specifically on the command line (least I did not find another way). Property, file and other means of activation fail to activate the POM because the trigger is not in the POM where the profile is declared. 2 - (this is what I ended up doing) Declare the plugin as not inherited in the parent and re-declare (copy-paste) the tidbit in every child where it is wanted. Not ideal but it is simple and it works. 3 - Split the aggregation nature and parent nature of the parent POM. Then since the part that only applies to the parent is in a different project it is now possible to use pluginManagement as firstly intended. However this means that a new artificial project must be created that does not contribute to the end product but only serves the could system. This is clear case of conceptual bleed. Also this only applies to my specific and is hard to generalize, so I abandoned efforts to try and make this work in favor of the not-pretty but more contained cut and paste patch described in 2. If anyone coming across this question has a better solution either because of my lack of knowledge of Maven or because the tool evolved to allow this please post the solution here for future reference.   Hello, I have inherited a project, it was originally written in VS2005. I have made a few changes, but all are design. • Install Trac on 64bits Windows 7

  I'm configuring a new Developing Server that came with Windows 7 64bits. It must have installed Trac with Subversion integration. I install Subversion with VisualSVN 2.1.1, clients with TortoiseSVN 1.6.7 and AnkhSVN 2.1.7 for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 integration. All works fine! my problem begun when going to Trac installation. I install python 2.6 all fine. Trac hasn't a x64 windows installer, so I installed it manually by compiling it with python console (C:\Python26\python.exe C:/TRAC/setup.py install). After that, I can create TRAC projects normally, the Trac core is working fine. And so the problem begins, lets take a look at the Trac INSTALL file: Requirements To install Trac, the following software packages must be installed: Python, version = 2.3. Subversion, version = 1.0. (= 1.1.xrecommended) Subversion SWIG Python bindings (not PySVN). PySQLite,version 1.x (for SQLite 2.x) or version 2.x (for SQLite 3.x) Clearsilver, version = 0.9.3 (0.9.14 recommended) Python: OK Subverion: OK Subversion SWIG Python bindings (not PySVN): Here I face the first issue, he asks me for 'cd' to the swig directory and run the 'configure' file, and the result is: C:\swigwin-1.3.40> c:\python26\python.exe configure File "configure", line 16 DUALCASE=1; export DUALCASE # for MKS sh ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax PySQLite, version 1.x (for SQLite 2.x) or version 2.x (for SQLite 3.x): Don't need, as Python 2.6 comes with SQLLite Clearsilver, version = 0.9.3 (0.9.14 recommended): Second issue, Clearsilver only has 32bit installer wich does not recognize python installation (as registry keys are in different places from 32 to 64 bits). So I try to manually install it with python console. It returns me a error of the same kind as SWIG: C:\clearsilver-0.10.5>C:\python26\python.exe ./configure File "./configure", line 13 if test -n "${ZSH_VERSION+set}" && (emulate sh) >/dev/null 2>&1; then ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax When I simulate a web server using the "TRACD" command, it runs fine when I disable svn support but when I try to open the web page it shows me a error regarding ClearSilver is not installed for generating the html content. AND (for making me more happy) This TRAC will run over IIS7, I mustn't install Apache... I'm nearly crazy with this issue... HELP!!!

  I'm pulling my hair out over a problem I'm encountering on Firefox 3.5 & 3.6 on OS X. I'm using SWFobject to embed an AmMap of the US, which has rollover tooltips for various states. The rollovers are working fine in every other browser I've tested, but they're very buggy on FF for Mac--most of the time they don't show up at all, but if I persistently click a state that's supposed to have a hover event, I might catch a glimpse of the tooltip. Here's the code for the SWFObject embed (incidentally, this isn't being done in the document head due to templating reasons).   I'm running an "defect fixing" group (developers do 2 weeks operations, then rotate). I want to build up a documentation "how to deal with problem x" - basically a decision tree: Is the problem in part x of the web site? Yes: Is the problem occurring in all browsers? Yes: ... No: ... No: ... The documentation should be written and extended by the people using it. Do you know of any book/article describing how that is best done, or is there a software (Mac OS X) that helps doing that?

  I want to understand event cycles. I have a form with a grid and textboxes. It has a grid, bound to DataTable, and textboxes bound to same table too. I'm trying to debug something and need to know how to identify ALL events fired in the form to see what may solve an issue for me. Anyhow, unless I explicitly subclass every class on my form, and override / attach to every event to my own event handlers, how can I get / listen to all events being fired during a certain action... Such as changing a "Selected" road in a DataGridView. It obviously updates its own "CurrentRow"... I need to know what / how to maybe FORCE a re-loading of SAME CurrentRow. Reason: during a form level "Edit Mode", and I change the content in another "Textbox" control, and reject changes, I need it to simulate the current "Record" is reloaded to go back to its original values.

  I've found what seems like a bizarre problem with IIS 6.0 and .NET 3.5. I always use the tilde for all URLs (eg: ~/mypage.aspx) so if I go to mydomain.com/mypage.aspx, everything works fine. If, however, I add a trailing slash and go to mydomain.com/mypage.aspx/, all links on the page which use the tilde get rendered as mydomain.com/mypage.aspx/otherpage.aspx instead of mydomain.com/otherpage.aspx. This happens with all controls. Has anyone had this issue before?

  I'm a lone developer at the moment; please share you experiences on what is a good VC setup for a lone developer. My constraints are; I work on multiple machines and need to keep them synced up Sometimes I work offline I'm currently using Subversion(just the client to a remote server), and that is working ok. I'm interested in mecurial and git DVCS, but none of their use-cases make sense to my situation. EDIT: I've migrated my active development to Fossil http://www.fossil-scm.org/ after trialing it with a client. I really like the features to autosync my repositories(reducing accidental forks), the documentation support(both wiki and embedded/versioned) that supports my need to document the code and the project in different spaces, the easy to configure issue tracker, nice access control, skinnable web interface and helpful community.

• Memory leak in Apples 'Scrolling' sample code

  Hi All, I'm using code based on Apple's "Scrolling" sample code - here's where I have a problem: // load all the images from our bundle and add them to the scroll view NSUInteger i; for (i = 1; i <= jNumImages; i++) { NSString *imageName = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"page%d.png", i]; UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:imageName]; UIImageView *imageView2 = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:image]; The UIImageView causes a leak - it doesn't seem to be releasing (though I do state [imageView2 release]; after adding the imageView as a subView to scrollView2 I have say 15 chapters of a book each held in a nav bar, each containing a scroll view with one chapters worth of these image views (each image is a page). When I get to around the second last chapter the app crashes due to the memory leaks... really annoying! I think it might be because imageView's been alloc'd twice (in alloc and in addSubView) but i'm not sure.... tried releasing twice but it didn't seem to help. any pointers? Thanks in advance ^.^
