• Capturing network traffic on Linux

  Question: I have one Windows laptop, one Linux laptop and a wireless router. Now I want to "investigate" the hotmail/windows live protocol. What I want to do is route network traffic from the windows laptop via ethernet to the linux laptop, capture it on the Linux computer, forward it wirelessly to the router, receive the hotmail response from the router on the linux computer and forward it to the windows computer. How do I do that? In essence, switching the Linux laptop between the Windows laptop and the router, to capture network traffic ? Which program is best for capturing/analysing ? Please note that for whatever reason, packet capturing with winpcap on the windows computer doesn't work...

• Cannot exit X server, restart, shutdown or drop to tty when VGA monitor active

  I have a strange problem. If I connect an external VGA monitor to my laptop, exiting the X environment in any way crashes the computer. For example, say I am working with my two monitors (the laptop's and one connected to my VGA port) active. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F Key should take me down to a tty. What actually happens is that the VGA screen goes blank, as you would expect, but the laptop screen, although still on, shows nothing. I know the screen is on because it is slightly more illuminated than when it is off. When in this state, I can do nothing to regain access to the machine. I have tried: Ctrl+F Key (and even Ctrl+Alt+F Key, just in case) combinations and none seem to have any effect. Ctrl+Alt+Del : Nothing Magic SysRq key: Nothing Blindly typing my username and password and trying to reboot/shutdown or restart GDM or MDM: Nothing The only thing that works is a hard reset. The exact same behavior occurs when kiling the X server through Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, rebooting or shutdown. There is no difference if I reboot/shutdown/log out using the WM's graphical menu or if I use the shutdown or rebootcommands. It is also not WM-dependent. I have the same problem using Cinnamon, Gnome 3, MATE and xfce4. It is, however, VGA dependent. I have tried connecting another VGA monitor and have the same problem. I do not, however, have this problem if a screen is connected to the DisplayPort. It is, therefore, a VGA specific issue. To make things even stranger, this only occurs when both screens are active. If either the laptop screen or the VGA monitor is inactive the problem goes away. Finally, this problem arose when I installed the latest Linux Mint Debian (LMDE). It did not occur with the previous release of LMDE. I am not sure what has changed since I used the same kernel version in both releases (I had upgraded the kernel while on the previous release) and, I think, the same nvidia drivers. Oh, and yes, I have updated the nvidia driver. Hardware: Dell M4500 laptop CPU: Intel Core i7 RAM: 8GB Graphics: nVidia GT216 [Quadro FX 880M] Software: LMDE, kernel 3.2.0-2-amd64 Xorg: 1.11.4 nVidia kernel: 295.20-1+3.2.9-1 Possibly relevant files: /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/.xsession-errors Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? • What's your main development operating system? Why? [closed]

  What do you use as your main operating system for developing software (you might use another for testing, gaming, entertainment etc.), and most importantly, why? To speak for myself, I use Ubuntu and Kubuntu (it varies between those two Linux distributions), because it is easy to get stuff done with, has all the development tools I need, is fast, stable and safe. And I think I would never make it without the UNIX utilities anymore.

• Creating a development environment from a shared hosting production environment (LAMP)

  The production server is shared, I don't have access to php.ini and httpd.conf and most PHP settings cannot be set or overrided using ini_set PHP function. So I would like to create a local development environment having configurations as close as it can be to those of the production environment (LAMP). I don't have shell access to the server but using exec PHP function to run some simple commands is possible. I am using Windows XP Pro and I am going to install on VMWare a linux distribution that is more or less the same as the production server. However, installing apache, mysql and php, and then configuring them like those on the production server is not a easy task. It would be great if there exists any tools that are useful in this situation, tools that can analyze/ inspect the production server and then produce something that can help replicating the environment would be useful. If not, what should I be aware of when I try to manually replicate the production environment?

  for a project there will be me and one more programmer to develop a web service. i wonder how the development environment should be like. cause we need central storage (documents, pictures, business materials etc), file version handling, lamp (testing the web service) etc. i have never set up an environment for this before and want to have suggestions from experienced people which tools to use for effective collaboration. what crossed my mind: seperate applications: - google wave (for communication forth and back, setting up guide lines, other information) - team viewer (desktop sharing) - skype (calling) vps (ubuntu server): - svn (version tracking) - ftp (central storage) - lamp (testing the web service) - ssh (managing the vps) is this an appropriate programming environment? and regarding the vps, is it best practice to use ONE vps for all tasks listed up there? all suggestions and feedbacks are welcome!

• development and music recording machine suggestions?

  I wasn't sure if this belongs on SuperUser so flag if so. I am looking to build, primarily, a windows development machine that is also good for recording using Cubase. I know I should use seperate machines but I'm on a budget this time of year. I also havn't kept up with hardware for quite a few years. Basically I know I want quad core, multiple monitor support (no gaming requirements). A lot of RAM, very quiet case and super fast HDD (SSD OR 10,000RPM)for compiling and latency. I will store libraries and other data on a USB drive. Sound card is not needed as I will be using an audio interface, all other music recording equipment is taken care of also. I could do with some decent monitor recomendations also. All suggestions welcome, thanks.

  I'm running an Ubuntu guest OS on my Windows 7 laptop. Currently, I have it set up for bridged networking. The guest is os is configured for a static ip of 192.168.1.115, which depending on the network I'm connected to, may not be available. When I want to view my development work I hit that up in my web browser. I'm really looking for the following scenario: 1) My guest OS ip address stays constant. 2) I can access my guest os even if I don't have an internet connection, or a lan/router. 3) I can share files with my guest/host. How does one accomplish this using VMware Workstation?

• Development environment clean installation

  Hi there! I'm about to install a new and clean development environment. To accomplish that, I would like a Windows operating system (possibly Windows 7) and a Ubuntu one (possibly the most recent, 10.04). To allow sharing data between the two operating systems, I'm thinking to create a partition (workspace, for example) with using NTFS to format it and that be automatically mounted by Ubuntu. • Can working exclusively with niche apps or tech hurt your career in software development? How to get out of the cycle? [closed]

  I'm finding myself in a bit of a pickle. I've been at a pretty comfortable IT group for almost a decade. I got my start here working on web development, mostly CRUD, but have demonstrated the ability to figure out more complex problems. I'm not a rock star, but I have received many compliments on my programming aptitude, and technologists and architects have commented on my ability to pick things up (for example, I recently learned a very popular web framework that shall remain nameless since I don’t want to be identified). My problem is that, over time, my responsibilities have been shifting towards work such as support or ‘development’ with some rather niche products (afraid to mention here due to potential for being identified). Some of this work, if it includes anything resembling coding, is very menial scripting in languages such as Powershell or VBScript. The vast majority of the time, however, a typical day consists of going back and forth with the product’s vendor support to send them logs and apply configuration changes or patches they recommend. I’m basically starved for some actual software development. However, even though I’m more than capable of doing that development work (and actually do a much better job at it than anything else), our boss is more interested in the kind of work I mentioned above, her reasoning being that since no one else in the organization wants to do it, it must mean job security. This has been going on for close to 3 years, and the only reason I have held on is on the promise that we would eventually get more development projects assigned to us. Well, that turned out not to be true at all. A recent talk with the boss has just made it more explicitly clear, as she told me in no uncertain terms that it’s very likely that development work (web or otherwise) would go to another group. The reason given to me is that our we don’t have enough resources in our group to handle that. So now I find myself in the position that I either have to stay in what has essentially become a dead end IT job that is tied to the fortunes of a niche stack of apps, or try to find a position that will be better for my long term career. My problem (is it a problem?), however, is that compared to others, my development projects in the last three years are very sparse in number. To compound things, projects using the latest and most popular frameworks, amount to the big fat number of just one—with no work of that kind in the foreseeable future. I am very concerned that this sparseness in my resume is a deficit, and that it will hurt my chances of landing a different job. I’m also wondering how much it will hurt me, and whether that can be ameliorated with hobby projects of my own. I guess I’m looking for opinions. Thank you very much for reading.

• How to install ceph on EC2 Amazon Linux AMI

  I want to test Ceph (a distributed network storage and file system) on some EC2 hosts which is derived from Amazon Linux AMI (amzn-ami-2011.09.2.x86_64-ebs). The kernel version is 3.2 and btrfs is enabled. But kernel config options related to Ceph (CONFIG_CEPH_FS and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RBD) seems to be disabled. I have to make a new kernel and register it to amazon ? Or, does someone know more easy way ?

• Use hard disk image like a regular hard disk on Linux

  If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk? By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,... (I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)

  I need to mount a remote filesystem on a linux box using the afp protocol. The linux box runs an old Debian 4. I downloaded the source code of mount_afp, compiled it and installed it with all the required packages. Then created /etc/fuse with the following command: mknod /dev/fuse c 10 229 (according to the instructions here) I can mount the remote filesystem as root by executing: mount_afp afp://USER:PASSWD@REMOTE_SERVER/FOLDER /mnt/MOUNTPOINT/ but the same command fails when run as normal user (of the local machine). After reading here and there, I created a group fuse, and added my normal user U to the group fuse: [prompt] groups U U fuse Then modified the group of /dev/fuse, that now has the following rights: 0 crwxrwx--- 1 root fuse 10, 229 Feb 8 15:33 /dev/fuse However, if the user U tries to mount the remote filesystem by using the same command as above, U gets the following error: Incorrect permissions on /dev/fuse, mode of device is 20770, uid/gid is 0/1007. But your effective uid/gid is 1004/1004 But the user U with uid 1004 has also gid 1007 (group fuse). I might think the problem is related to real/effective/etc. ID, but I do not know how to proceed and could not find any clear instructions. Could you please help me? There is also another problem. If I mount /mnt/MOUNTPOINT as root and run ls -l /mnt, I get: drwxrwxrwx 15 root root 466 Feb 8 16:34 MONTPOINT If I run ls -l /mnt as normal user U I get: ? ?????????? ? ? ? ? ? MOUNTPOINT in fact when I try to cd /mnt/MOUNTPOINT I get: $-> cd /mnt/MOUNTPOINT -sh: cd: /mnt/MOUNTPOINT: Not a directory Then I unmount /mnt/MOUNTPOINT as root and run again ls -l /mnt as normal user U I get: 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 6 Feb 8 15:32 MOUNTPOINT/ After reading Frank's answer, I killed every shell/process running with privileges of user U. Still U cannot mount the remote filesystem, but the error message has changed. Now it is: "Login error: Authentication failed". The problem is not related to remote login/password since the same command works perfectly when run as root of the local machine. Since I cannot get mount_afp to work with normal users, I decided to follow mgorven's suggestion. So I run the commands: mount_afp -o allow_other afp://USER:PASSWD@REMOTE_SERVER/FOLDER /mnt/MOUNTPOINT/ and mount_afp -o user=U afp://USER:PASSWD@REMOTE_SERVER/FOLDER /mnt/MOUNTPOINT/ The mount succeeds but user U cannot access the mount point. If U executes ls -l in /mnt U@LOCAL_HOST [/mnt] $-> ls -l ls: cannot access MOUNT_POINT: Permission denied total 0 ? ?????????? ? ? ? ? ? MOUNT_POINT Is it so hard to have this utility working?

But are there are any solutions to monitor ram while the system is still running. I'm sort of thinking a daemon that writes and reads back from random unused memory. • Save Remote SSL Certificate via Linux Command Line

  Can you think of any linux command-line method for saving the certificate presented by a HTTPS server? Something along the lines of having curl/wget/openssl make a SSL connection and save the cert rather than the HTTP response content. The gui equivalent to what I'm looking for would be to browse to the HTTPS site, double-click on the browser "secure site" icon, and export the cert.   Are there any good tools to migrate existing firebird databases to PostgreSQL for Linux systems? I've looked at: FBexport which can be used to dump the data as insert statements, but it's mainly written to export/import from one firebird db to another, not as a migration tool. There's also: Firebird to PostgreSQL Win32 tool, but it's only for win32 systems. Is there any good tool to do this? Or should I just roll my own?

The failure was a ugly and so individual drives fell out of the array a little at a time. While there are backups, we the are not really done as frequently as we really need. There is some data that I am trying to recover if I can. I got additional hardware and I was able to access the drives again. The drives appear to be fine, and I can get the array and filesystem active and mounted (using read-only mode). I am able to access some data on the filesystem and have been copying that off, but I am seeing lots of errors when I try to copy the most recent data. When I am trying to access that most recent data I am getting errors like below which makes me think that the array size discrepancy may be the problem.
