  On my Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit system, I have changed the following setting: Local Computer Policy - Computer Configuration - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Local Policies - User Right Assignment - Deny access to this computer from the network This setting was by default "Guest" and I deleted this so that Guest can access a defined network share over the LAN. But later, I have changed my mind and wanted to return this setting to its default. So I edited that setting and specified Guest. But the setting became MYWINPC\Guest. So my question is, what is the difference between the previous setting "Guest" and MYWINPC\Guest? And how do I return this setting to its default value, "Guest"?

• Windows XP, have to use ctrl+alt+delete to log on as local administrator

  Hey, I have a weird issue, a user was was logging into a laptop using the local admin account which was working fine. I had to create another account on the system, which was also an admin account, when this happened the 'administrator' account disappeared from the 'choose an account to login with' screen. A quick workaround is available, if the user presses ctrl+alt+delete it brings you to the screen where you can type in the username and password, so by manually typing 'administrator' it can log in. Normally this would be easily fixed, I figured the admin account had somehow been disabled from the local system, but i checked all settings and it is setup fine. The laptop is not part of a domain, so I used the management console to delete the new account and all that succeeded in doing was making the 'choose an account to log in with' screen display no accounts to choose. So far I see nothing else to fix it, the option to change the default logon screen to style where you type the username and password also seems to be missing. any ideas?

  Hi, My hierarchy ask me to setup a production Windows server 2008 virtual machine (HyperV) with SQL 2000 Standard Ed. installed on it. I can't find on the net much information about the relative "compatibility" of SQL2000 on WinSrv2008. Of course I found some obscure answers like : "it's impossible, it's not supported, don't do it". I already setup the machine, it's working, but... I don't know where I'm going. Do you experienced this kind of configuration ? Could you give me some advices ? Could you tell me the pros and cons ? • Redirect traffic to local address so iOS speedtest app measures LAN speed

  I have mounted a Speedtest Mini server on a local LAMP, so I can test my LAN speeds effortlessly just by opening the URL with a Flash enabled web browser, the thing is, I want my iOS and Android devices to test with the LAN server too, not with the WAN, as I'm trying to measure LAN-Only performance. Is there a way so I can redirect the traffic intended to an specific external IP (The one of the real server) to my local server?. I know the servers IP as a short Wireshark analysis gave me the data, but still searching for a way to make that redirect. I have Jailbreak and root on my devices, so playing with system files is not a problem. I've tried mounting a proxy and making redirects by the hosts file and domain names, but it looks like Ookla's app relies on IP address only.

  I have web application on the Tomcat with webservices. I've noticed that all web services connected to https get timeout. I run this app on my localhost in my company. When I redirect all my connections through Fiddler (local proxy) everything works correctly. I don't want to execute fiddler all the time. my computer -> [FIDDLER local proxy] -> [remote proxy] // WORKS my computer -> [remote proxy] // timeout How to increase tomcat logging to get more technical logs than only "timeout". Is there any other way to get more information what blocks the https URL?

  So, I've set up a few Win Servs in my time and always did the .local thing when there was a router that sepearated my internal from external networks. Now that I'm setting up an *nix box for the first time, does this concept still apply? Do I still want my FQDNs (/etc/hostname) to show .local or .com for all my machines (mixed: linux servers, win workstations) inside of my network. This question comes in context of always having Active Directory hold my hand every step of the way, where now I'm setting up an DNS machine manually.

  As documentation says: You can import VMware ESX and VMware Workstation VMDK images, Citrix Xen VHD images and Microsoft Hyper-V VHD images for Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. What about virtual machine with Ubuntu on it? Will it import it successfully? Have anyone tried to do it? Is it possible to import VM directly from Windows Azure. Without need to download VM on my machine and then upload it to Amazon? Thanks.

  I am experiencing rare but real unrecoverable machine checks on HP DL370 G6 dual-core Xeon server. I ran memtest86+ before, and ran CPU-intensive operations without any problems. In your opinion, does this indicate a real problem, or is it normal and expected behavior? How would you approach this problem? EDIT after some troubleshooting, it seems that these machine checks, as well as problems when showing device manager can be traced back to NC375i NICs. All is well when the NICs are not in the server. Further improvements to stability of HP Gen6 with Intel Xeon have been brought in with BIOS update in September 2013 HP Update DVD. Intel's newer microcode makes these CPUs much more stable. We haven't seen hardware-related BSODs since the update in September.

  I have an external hard drive formated in NTFS which I would like to be able to access by the network. I want to make a network share out of it. I also have a Debian machine running in my house and I then got an idea. I want to plug in my external hard drive (usb) into my Debian machine, and make a windows share with it, maybe with Samba, so I will be able to access it from my Windows 7 laptop and see it as a network share. Additionally, how can I restrict specific folders of that network share, and allow only specific folders to specific users? For instance, I would like to give my girlfriend access to a folder of her name so she can put her files and so she wont be able to see the stuff in my folder...

• Windows clients cannot access machine running DHCP server

  I'm trying to setup a small LAN, using an Ethernet switch, an Arch Linux server, and around 10 Windows XP machines. This network has no outside connections. The Arch machine has a self configured ip address (configured with ip addr add 192.168.0.1 dev eth0), and acts as a DHCP server(using dhcpd). This portion works great, windows clients get IP addresses, the correct gateway settings, perfect. However, the clients cannot connect to each other, or to the dhcp server. When I run ping 192.168.0.1 on any client, I get no response, same happens if I try to ping any other client. On the gateway machine, I can't ping any of the clients either. Any help would be much appreciated!

• Triggering GDM login on a remote machine

  I have to briefly describe the situation. We are planning to make a computer classroom with workstations running Ubuntu 10.04. Since making accounts for each student has not been considered reasonable, we decided to make accounts for each student group. We don't want students to share their passwords between groups so the solution would be not to give them passwords at all, but let the teacher log them in instead. Obviously he shouldn't go from one machine to another typing in credentials by hand, so we need some script that will connect to a remote machine by ssh and make GDM (or probably any other login manager if GDM cannot serve this purpose) log in specified user. I couldn't find any solutions, as well as I haven't noticed anybody in similar situation asking for help, so my question will be: can the scheme described be realized and if yes, then how?   I tried adding route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0 to my Fedora rc.local file, but it's not being executed when Fedora boots up. What can I do to fix this? update: i changed to the full path cmd in my rc.local /sbin/route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0 but its not being executed. I change it to sudo /sbin/route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0 it still doesnt work although it works when i manually enter it in the terminal.

• Can't resolve Mac's machine name on VPN

  My mac'c machine name is something like this: hostname.company.com but whenever I connect to VPN, it becomes something like vpn-xxxx.company.com where xxxx are some random numbers. Because of this, some of my scripts which are dependent on host name gets blocked. We use the standard mac's vpn setup which comes with OS X Lion (under network preferences). How can I resolve to the correct mac's name even if I am on vpn ? That is even if I am connected to VPN, my machine name should resolve to hostname.company.com and NOT to vpn-xxxx.company.com. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

• Spoof database connection to be local instead of remote

  I am trying to connect one of our clients "as is" programs to a remote database instead of a local one, they say that they have coded it to be able to do it, but for some reason the program crashes when trying to connect to a remote database. I don't have the source code so I can't really dig much deeper than that and the company does not provide any upgrades or custom modifications. I can succesfully connect to the database through SqlDbx and HeidiSQL so I know that the server is set up correctly. This is why I need to find a way to spoof a remote connection on port 1433 to appear like a local database connection to the program. I thought about editing the hosts file, but it will most likely crash other programs if I bind localhost to another IP than 127.0.0.1. Any ideas?

  I have a fresh install of arch Linux. I've installed Emacs from the rpos, and my home directory is mounted from a separate partition. I have old settings I've used on my ~/.ssh/config along with authentication keys I've regularly used before. Now, when I try to connect to a remote machine using Emacs, Emacs asks for my password and uses the wrong username. Clearly, Emacs doesn't access my config file. When I try to ssh or scp directly to the machine, things work fine. What do I need to update?

• Can't connect to web-server on local host behind NAT

  I got Ubuntu as host. I'm running a web-server on http://192.168.199.8:80. It is accessible from the local network, but when I'm trying to reach it by external IP, I go to my router's web-page. I arranged port forwarding on router for port 80 to my local IP 192.168.199.8. Unfortunately web-server is still unavailable via external IP. I checked whether the port is open via http://www.canyouseeme.org/. As it showed that the port is unavailable, I changed port used to 3659 (not forget to rearrange port forwarding rule). Although http://www.canyouseeme.org/ shows that port 3659 is open, I still can't reach my web-server. Where can the problem be?

I have 2 networks on the same floor which have Windows 7 computers, but the networks are split as we have 2 internet connections. How do I go about this? Additional info: Currently both the networks use DropBox to send files to each other but that happens via the Internet and hence its slow.   I have a Windows 2003 server that I want to block from accessing a specific IP address. I want to control this from the Server. because I control the machine. The traffic is http traffic (webservice call). It uses a non-standard port, so IP address+ Port combination would also work. Background: I have a development enviornment that for some reason is ignoring host file enteries under some circumstances. These host files point the enviornment at services in another Dev enviornment. Wne th host files are ignored, dev is talking to production. This is not my question, rather the motivation for this inquiry. I want is a failsafe to ensure dev will error instead of happily engaging in transactions with production. I control the dev server, I do not control the firewalls or the target production machine.

My host file is updated, i can communicate with my machine from my server just fine. i can access websites on the server by typing the ip adress into the adress bar followed by the name. it is like my machine is ignoring my hosts file... i have updated re updated...flushed dns, u name it ive done it any ideas?

• Cannot get NLogViewer to receive msgs from local machine

  I cannot get NLogViewer to receive msgs from local machine. My machine is Windows 7. I am able to get a remote machine to send NLog messages to my local box and NLogViewer on my local box shows the message fine. But, if I run an app locally, and config NLog to spit messages to my local box, NLogViewer doesn't get the messages.
