  • memory management objective c - returning objects from methods

    - by geeth
    Hi, Please clarify, how to deal with returned objects from methods? Below, I get employee details from GeEmployeetData function with autorelease, 1. Do I have to retain the returned object in Process method? 2. Can I release *emp in Process fucntion? -(void) Process { Employee *emp = [self GeEmployeetData] } +(Employee*) GeEmployeetData{ Employee *emp = [[Employee alloc]init]; //fill entity return [emp autorelease]; }

  • Objective-C: alloc of object within init of another object (memory management)

    - by Stefan Klumpp
    In my .h file I have: NSMutableArray *myArray; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray *myArray; My .m file looks basically like this: @synthesize myArray; - (id) init { self = [super init]; if (self != nil) { self.myArray = .... ? // here I want to create an empty array } return self; } - (void) dealloc { [self.myArray release]; [super dealloc]; } What I'm not sure about is what do to in the init. 1) self.myArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; 2) NSMutableArray *tmp = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; self.myArray = tmp; [tmp release]; Solution 1 doesn't seem right to me, because of my @property (retain) setting I automatically increase the retain counter when setting self.myArray, but additionally I have already a "+1 retain" due to the [NSMutableArray alloc]. Thus the second solution seems more correct to me, even though it is cumbersome. Also am I wondering if self.myArray = ... is actually the same as [self setMyArray:...] and thus does increase the retain count.

  • Memory usage of strings (or any other objects) in .Net

    - by ava
    I wrote this little test program: using System; namespace GCMemTest { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { System.GC.Collect(); System.Diagnostics.Process pmCurrentProcess = System.Diagnostics.Process.GetCurrentProcess(); long startBytes = pmCurrentProcess.PrivateMemorySize64; double kbStart = (double)(startBytes) / 1024.0; System.Console.WriteLine("Currently using " + kbStart + "KB."); { int size = 2000000; string[] strings = new string[size]; for(int i = 0; i < size; i++) { strings[i] = "blabla" + i; } } System.GC.Collect(); pmCurrentProcess = System.Diagnostics.Process.GetCurrentProcess(); long endBytes = pmCurrentProcess.PrivateMemorySize64; double kbEnd = (double)(endBytes) / 1024.0; System.Console.WriteLine("Currently using " + kbEnd + "KB."); System.Console.WriteLine("Leaked " + (kbEnd - kbStart) + "KB."); System.Console.ReadKey(); } } } The output in Release build is: Currently using 18800KB. Currently using 118664KB. Leaked 99864KB. I assume that the GC.collect call will remove the allocated strings since they go out of scope, but it appears it does not. I do not understand nor can I find an explanation for it. Maybe anyone here? Thanks, Alex

  • Httpd Process High memory usage and slow page loads

    - by Abs
    Hello all, I am running wampserver on my windows vista machine. I have been doing this for a long time and it has been working great. I have completed loads of projects with this setup. However, today, without me changing anything (no configuration etc) only PHP code changes, I find that every time I load pages of my site (those with user sessions or access the database) are really slow to load - Over 30 seconds, they use to take 1 or 2 seconds. When I have a look at the task manager, I can see on page loads the httpd process jumps from 10mb to 30mb, 90mb, 120mb, 250mb and then back down again. I have tested previous php code projects and they seem to all be slow as well! What is going on? Thanks all for any help on this confusion issue!

    In a function like this function download($file_source, $file_target) { $rh = fopen($file_source, 'rb'); $wh = fopen($file_target, 'wb'); if (!$rh || !$wh) { return false; } while (!feof($rh)) { if (fwrite($wh, fread($rh, 1024)) === FALSE) { return false; } } fclose($rh); fclose($wh); return true; } what is the best way to rewrite last few bytes of a file with my custom string? Thanks!

  • Javascript Memory Limit

    - by Dänu
    Hey Guys, I was wondering if there is a "maximum" of data a javascript application can store. I guess this is handled by the browser and that each one has it's limitation? Am I guessing right? Wrong? If there isn't a limit, will a page file be created (wouldn't be very secure I guess).

  • allocating "unmanaged" memory in c#

    - by Blitzz
    Hi, I'm writting a program in c# that uses a C++ library, and for some reason I need to allocate an unmanaged buffer to pass it to the lib. Is there a way to do this in c# ? Basically I would just need to do a malloc in C#... Thanks

  • Objective C memory management question with NSArray

    - by Robert
    I am loading an array with floats like this: NSArray *arr= [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [NSNumber numberWithFloat:1.9], [NSNumber numberWithFloat:1.7], [NSNumber numberWithFloat:1.6], [NSNumber numberWithFloat:1.9],nil]; Now I know this is the correct way of doing it, however I am confused by the retail counts. Each Object is created by the [NSNumber numberWithFloat:] method. This gives the object a retain count of 1 dosnt it? - otherwise the object would be reclaimed The arrayWithObjects: method sends a retain message to each object. This means each object has a retain cont of 2. When the array is de-allocated each object is released leaving them with a retain count of 1. What have I missed?

  • Obj-C memory management for an NSView * instance variable

    - by massimoperi
    My custom view has a subview as an instance variable. Here is a sample interface: @interface MyCustomView : NSView { NSView *aSubview; } @end Then, in the .m file, I initialize aSubView and add it to the custom view. - (id)init { self = [super initWithFrame:CGRectMakeFrame(0.0, 0.0, 320.0, 480.0); if (self) { aSubview = [[NSView alloc] initWithFrame(0.0, 0.0, 100.0, 100.0); [self addSubview:aSubview]; } return self; } Where should I release aSubView? In the -dealloc method? - (void)dealloc { [aSubView release]; [super dealloc]; } Or directly after adding it to the custom view in the -init method? - (id)init { [...] [self addSubview:aSubview]; [aSubview release]; [...] } Which one is the best implementation?

  • Memory alignment in C

    - by user1758245
    Here is a snippet: #pragma pack(4) struct s1 { char a; long b; }; #pragma pack() #pragma pack(2) struct s2 { char c; struct s1 st1; }; #pragma pack() #pragma pack(2) struct s3 { char a; long b; }; #pragma pack() #pragma pack(4) struct s4 { char c; struct s3 st3; }; #pragma pack() I though sizeof(s4) should be 10 or 12. But it turns out to be 8. I am using Visual C++ 6.0. Could someone tell me why?

  • Unusually high dentry cache usage

    - by Wolfgang Stengel
    Problem A CentOS machine with kernel 2.6.32 and 128 GB physical RAM ran into trouble a few days ago. The responsible system administrator tells me that the PHP-FPM application was not responding to requests in a timely manner anymore due to swapping, and having seen in free that almost no memory was left, he chose to reboot the machine. I know that free memory can be a confusing concept on Linux and a reboot perhaps was the wrong thing to do. However, the mentioned administrator blames the PHP application (which I am responsible for) and refuses to investigate further. What I could find out on my own is this: Before the restart, the free memory (incl. buffers and cache) was only a couple of hundred MB. Before the restart, /proc/meminfo reported a Slab memory usage of around 90 GB (yes, GB). After the restart, the free memory was 119 GB, going down to around 100 GB within an hour, as the PHP-FPM workers (about 600 of them) were coming back to life, each of them showing between 30 and 40 MB in the RES column in top (which has been this way for months and is perfectly reasonable given the nature of the PHP application). There is nothing else in the process list that consumes an unusual or noteworthy amount of RAM. After the restart, Slab memory was around 300 MB If have been monitoring the system ever since, and most notably the Slab memory is increasing in a straight line with a rate of about 5 GB per day. Free memory as reported by free and /proc/meminfo decreases at the same rate. Slab is currently at 46 GB. According to slabtop most of it is used for dentry entries: Free memory: free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 129048 76435 52612 0 144 7675 -/+ buffers/cache: 68615 60432 Swap: 8191 0 8191 Meminfo: cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 132145324 kB MemFree: 53620068 kB Buffers: 147760 kB Cached: 8239072 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 20300940 kB Inactive: 6512716 kB Active(anon): 18408460 kB Inactive(anon): 24736 kB Active(file): 1892480 kB Inactive(file): 6487980 kB Unevictable: 8608 kB Mlocked: 8608 kB SwapTotal: 8388600 kB SwapFree: 8388600 kB Dirty: 11416 kB Writeback: 0 kB AnonPages: 18436224 kB Mapped: 94536 kB Shmem: 6364 kB Slab: 46240380 kB SReclaimable: 44561644 kB SUnreclaim: 1678736 kB KernelStack: 9336 kB PageTables: 457516 kB NFS_Unstable: 0 kB Bounce: 0 kB WritebackTmp: 0 kB CommitLimit: 72364108 kB Committed_AS: 22305444 kB VmallocTotal: 34359738367 kB VmallocUsed: 480164 kB VmallocChunk: 34290830848 kB HardwareCorrupted: 0 kB AnonHugePages: 12216320 kB HugePages_Total: 2048 HugePages_Free: 2048 HugePages_Rsvd: 0 HugePages_Surp: 0 Hugepagesize: 2048 kB DirectMap4k: 5604 kB DirectMap2M: 2078720 kB DirectMap1G: 132120576 kB Slabtop: slabtop --once Active / Total Objects (% used) : 225920064 / 226193412 (99.9%) Active / Total Slabs (% used) : 11556364 / 11556415 (100.0%) Active / Total Caches (% used) : 110 / 194 (56.7%) Active / Total Size (% used) : 43278793.73K / 43315465.42K (99.9%) Minimum / Average / Maximum Object : 0.02K / 0.19K / 4096.00K OBJS ACTIVE USE OBJ SIZE SLABS OBJ/SLAB CACHE SIZE NAME 221416340 221416039 3% 0.19K 11070817 20 44283268K dentry 1123443 1122739 99% 0.41K 124827 9 499308K fuse_request 1122320 1122180 99% 0.75K 224464 5 897856K fuse_inode 761539 754272 99% 0.20K 40081 19 160324K vm_area_struct 437858 223259 50% 0.10K 11834 37 47336K buffer_head 353353 347519 98% 0.05K 4589 77 18356K anon_vma_chain 325090 324190 99% 0.06K 5510 59 22040K size-64 146272 145422 99% 0.03K 1306 112 5224K size-32 137625 137614 99% 1.02K 45875 3 183500K nfs_inode_cache 128800 118407 91% 0.04K 1400 92 5600K anon_vma 59101 46853 79% 0.55K 8443 7 33772K radix_tree_node 52620 52009 98% 0.12K 1754 30 7016K size-128 19359 19253 99% 0.14K 717 27 2868K sysfs_dir_cache 10240 7746 75% 0.19K 512 20 2048K filp VFS cache pressure: cat /proc/sys/vm/vfs_cache_pressure 125 Swappiness: cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness 0 I know that unused memory is wasted memory, so this should not necessarily be a bad thing (especially given that 44 GB are shown as SReclaimable). However, apparently the machine experienced problems nonetheless, and I'm afraid the same will happen again in a few days when Slab surpasses 90 GB. Questions I have these questions: Am I correct in thinking that the Slab memory is always physical RAM, and the number is already subtracted from the MemFree value? Is such a high number of dentry entries normal? The PHP application has access to around 1.5 M files, however most of them are archives and not being accessed at all for regular web traffic. What could be an explanation for the fact that the number of cached inodes is much lower than the number of cached dentries, should they not be related somehow? If the system runs into memory trouble, should the kernel not free some of the dentries automatically? What could be a reason that this does not happen? Is there any way to "look into" the dentry cache to see what all this memory is (i.e. what are the paths that are being cached)? Perhaps this points to some kind of memory leak, symlink loop, or indeed to something the PHP application is doing wrong. The PHP application code as well as all asset files are mounted via GlusterFS network file system, could that have something to do with it? Please keep in mind that I can not investigate as root, only as a regular user, and that the administrator refuses to help. He won't even run the typical echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches test to see if the Slab memory is indeed reclaimable. Any insights into what could be going on and how I can investigate any further would be greatly appreciated. • How can the Private Bytes of a process be significantly less than its effect on the system commit charge?

    - by bacar
    On a 64-bit Windows Server 2003, I can see using taskmgr or process explorer that the total commit charge is around 3.5GB, yet when I sum the Private Bytes consumed by each process (by running pslist -m and adding all values under the Priv column) the total comes in at 1.6GB. I know which process seems to be causing this (sqlservr.exe) as when I kill the process, the commit charge drops dramatically. However the process in question is consuming only ~220MB of Private Bytes yet killing the process drops the commit charge by ~1.6GB. How is this possible? How can the commit charge be so significantly greater than Private Bytes, which should represent the amount of committed memory? If some other factor contributes to the commit charge, what is that factor and how can I view its impact in process explorer? Note: I claim that I understand the difference between reserved and committed memory already: my investigations above relate specifically to Private Bytes which includes only committed memory and excludes reserved memory. the Virtual Size of the process in this case is over 4GB, but this should be irrelevant - Virtual Size in procexp represents reserved, not committed memory, and should not contribute to the commit charge. I'm particularly interested in generalised answers to this question: I'm assuming that if sqlservr.exe can behave in this way, that any process potentially could. Further Investigations I notice that pointing Sysinternals VMMap at this process reports a committed "Private Data" of 1.6GB despite Procexp's reported a Private Bytes of 220MB. This is particularly strange given that the documentation for this field in the "Windows® Sysinternals Administrator's Reference" states that: Private Data memory is memory that is allocated by VirtualAlloc and that is not further handled by the Heap Manager or the .NET runtime, or assigned to the Stack category... VMMap’s definition of “Private Data” is more granular than that of Process Explorer’s “private bytes.” Procexp’s “private bytes” includes all private committed memory belonging to the process. i.e. that VMMap's committed "Private Data" should be smaller than procexp's "Private Bytes". Also, after reading the 'Process committed memory' section of Mark Russinovich's excellent Pushing the Limits of Windows: Virtual Memory, he highlights two cases which won't show up in Private Bytes: File mapping views with copy-on-write semantics (however, according to VMMap there is no significant space allocated to Mapped Files). pagefile-backed virtual memory (however, I tried testlimit with the -l flag as suggested, and no significant memory is consumed by pagefile-backed sections)

    Firefox appears to using too much memory and cpu even when it is idle What tools exist for monitoring the CPU and memory utilization of Firefox? I am thinking of an equivalent of Sysinternals Process Explorer for Firefox or something like top or htop, on a page, script and addon basis. More technically oriented, something I can see and hand over to the script designers or Mozilla and say "see what this doing to my browsing experience!!"

  • In Windows 7, is there a way to know how much memory a service is using?

    - by tigrou
    In windows 7, is there a way (by using common interface or a custom utility) to know how much memory a specific windows service is using ? It seems most services are hosted by svchost.exe processes ( some svchosts.exe processes seems to host tons of services). While it is possible to know which services are hosted by a specific process, I found no way to get information about how much memory a service take.

  • Why is my program getting slower and slower ?

    - by RedWolf
    I'm using the program to send data from database to the Excel file . It works fine at the beginning and then becomes more and more slowly,finally it run out of the memory and the following error ocurrs: "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space...". The problem can be resolved by adding the jvm heap sapce.But the question is that it spends too much time to run out the program. After several minutes,it finished a loop with 4 seconds which can be finished with 0.5 seconds at the beginning . I can't found a solution to make it always run in a certain speed. • WPA2 authentication fails on Ubuntu 12.04 using Rosewill RNX-N1

    - by user94156
    Decided to reduce the clutter in the house and replace a wired connection with a wireless one on my wife's system using USB network device Rosewill RNX-X1. I can see and connect to unprotected network, but WPA2 authentication repeatedly fails. RNX-X1 works on other systems (including TV); also have 2 of 'em and tried each. Worth noting that I recently switched from Comcast to CenturyLink and so switched routers. The system connected successfully to previous router (Linksys EA4500) using WPA2. Would think it is the router (Actiontec C1000A) but all other devices (TV, iPad, Windows, Blackberry, and Squeezebox) connect ok. Would appreciate some diagnostic guidance and insight (phrased for a newbie!) • iphone: Help with AudioToolbox Leak: Stack trace/code included here...

    - by editor guy
    Part of this app is a "Scream" button that plays random screams from cast members of a TV show. I have to bang on the app quite a while to see a memory leak in Instruments, but it's there, occasionally coming up (every 45 seconds to 2 minutes.) The leak is 3.50kb when it occurs. Haven't been able to crack it for several hours. Any help appreciated. Instruments says this is the offending code line: [appSoundPlayer play]; that's linked to from line 9 of the below stack trace: 0 libSystem.B.dylib malloc 1 libSystem.B.dylib pthread_create 2 AudioToolbox CAPThread::Start() 3 AudioToolbox GenericRunLoopThread::Start() 4 AudioToolbox AudioQueueNew(bool, AudioStreamBasicDescription const*, TCACallback const&, CACallbackTarget const&, unsigned long, OpaqueAudioQueue*) 5 AudioToolbox AudioQueueNewOutput 6 AVFoundation allocAudioQueue(AVAudioPlayer, AudioPlayerImpl*) 7 AVFoundation prepareToPlayQueue(AVAudioPlayer*, AudioPlayerImpl*) 8 AVFoundation -[AVAudioPlayer prepareToPlay] 9 Scream Queens -[ScreamViewController scream:] /Users/laptop2/Desktop/ScreamQueens Versions/ScreamQueens25/Scream Queens/Classes/../ScreamViewController.m:210 10 CoreFoundation -[NSObject performSelector:withObject:withObject:] 11 UIKit -[UIApplication sendAction:to:from:forEvent:] 12 UIKit -[UIApplication sendAction:toTarget:fromSender:forEvent:] 13 UIKit -[UIControl sendAction:to:forEvent:] 14 UIKit -[UIControl(Internal) _sendActionsForEvents:withEvent:] 15 UIKit -[UIControl touchesEnded:withEvent:] 16 UIKit -[UIWindow _sendTouchesForEvent:] 17 UIKit -[UIWindow sendEvent:] 18 UIKit -[UIApplication sendEvent:] 19 UIKit _UIApplicationHandleEvent 20 GraphicsServices PurpleEventCallback 21 CoreFoundation CFRunLoopRunSpecific 22 CoreFoundation CFRunLoopRunInMode 23 GraphicsServices GSEventRunModal 24 UIKit -[UIApplication _run] 25 UIKit UIApplicationMain 26 Scream Queens main /Users/laptop2/Desktop/ScreamQueens Versions/ScreamQueens25/Scream Queens/main.m:14 27 Scream Queens start Here's .h: #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import <AVFoundation/AVFoundation.h> #import <MediaPlayer/MediaPlayer.h> #import <AudioToolbox/AudioToolbox.h> #import <MessageUI/MessageUI.h> #import <MessageUI/MFMailComposeViewController.h> @interface ScreamViewController : UIViewController <UIApplicationDelegate, AVAudioPlayerDelegate, MFMailComposeViewControllerDelegate> { //AudioPlayer related AVAudioPlayer *appSoundPlayer;
