  • Looking for parallel programming problem

    I am trying to come up with a problem that is easily solvable in a parallel manner and that requires communication between threads for a test. I also am trying to avoid problems that require require random waits, which rules out dining philosophers and producer-consumer (bounded buffer), two of the classics. My goal is for the student to be able to write the program in less than 20-30 minutes in front of a computer not knowing of the problem beforehand. (This is to prevent preparation more than to come up with something novel.) I am trying to stress the communication aspect of the program, though the multi-threaded nature is also important. Does anyone have some ideas? Edit: I'm using Google Go for the language and testing comprehension of the goroutines/channels combo vs an actors library that I authored.

Currently, I am a high school student planning to take programming, Digital electronics courses next semester. My biggest problem is that I do not know where to start and I have no one to consult with. Should I take a course at my local community college this summer? Get some books or try learning from some internet websites?     I have been wondering the following since recently, seeing as I want to pursue a career in game development after university: What programmer job positions are there in professional game development? Think about AAA titles, etc. What programming language are the most commonly used ones in that area? I can think of some job aspects, like game engine, network, centralized server and artificial intelligence. I am just wondering what options I have later on, and in what programming languages I should invest right now. I am quite proficient with Java, and also wondering if that is of any help.

I know a bit of Perl and Python and I am looking to learn programming in more depth so that once I get the hang of it I can start developing applications and then websites. I would like to know of an algorithm (sequence of steps :)) that could describe my approach towards learning programming in general. I have posted small questions on Perl/Python and I have recieved great help from everyone. Note:- I am not in a hurry to learn. I know it takes time and that's fine.   • Charakter coding / programming

    lately I tryed a few times to create charakters for some games, but at some certain point (especially when collision detection came in) everything became messy and the interaction between chars, the world and certain items had a lot of bugs. So here is my question, how do you ussualy keep track of actions that your charakter is allowed to do, or more in general do you have some links / advices how to set up a char efficiantly? I´m working on a char right now, who should at least be able to run, jump, pick items up and use different fighting animations. Most ideas I came up with until now use some kind of action.priority / action.duration system to determain whats possible and what not, or a "action-manager" which defines for every action what is possible from that action on but it all doesnt work that well together =\ thx in advance for some input

What's the "hacking part" in programming, and what makes a language "hackerish"? What are some good examples of languages and features in languages that you would call "hackerish"?   • C++ game programming

    Until now I have been using C# with XNA for 2d and a little bit of 3d games, althought I dont remember that I finished any of them I want to start working with C++. I have a very very little exprience with C++ and my question is where to start? I plated a little bit with SFML and I encountered some problems with performance when I started to build a tile based game. I'm pretty sure that the problem is my code and not the library itself. Is there anything similiar to XNA for C++? I should keep try and work with SFML? Sorry for my bad english! Thanks in advance!

  • Prefer examples over Documentation. Is it a behavioral problem?

    Whenever I come across a new api or programming language or even simple Linux MAN pages, I always (ever since I remember) avoided then and instead lazily relied on examples for gaining understanding of new concepts. Subconsciously, I avoid documentation/api whenever it is not straight forward or cryptic or just plain boring. It's been years since I began programming and now I feel like I need to mend my ways as I now realize that I'm causing more damage by refraining from reading cryptic/difficult documentation as it is still a million times better than examples as the official documentation has more coverage than any example out there. So even after realizing that examples should be treated as "added" value instead of the "primary" source for learning. How do I break this bad habit as a programmer or am I over thinking? Any wisdom from fellow programmers is appreciated.

    Hi all, Im reading a lot about how scala/Erlang does lightweight threads and your concurrency model ( Actor Model ). Off course, some doubts appear in my head. Scala/Erlang use a approach similar to the old thread model used by java (greenThread) ? for example, suppose that there is a machine with 2 cores, so the scala/erlang environment will fork one thread per processor ? The other threads will be scheduled by user-space( scala VM / erlang vm ) environment. is it correct ? how under the hood that really work ? thanks a lot.

    I've just wrapped my head around monads (at least I'd like to think I have) and more specifically the state monad, which some people that are way smarter then me figured out, so I'm probably way of with this question. Anyway, the state monad is usually implemented with a M<'a as something like this (F#): type State<'a, 'state> = State of ('state -> 'a * 'state) Now my question: Is there any reason why you couldn't use a tuple here? Other then the possible ambiguity between MonadA<'a, 'b> and MonadB<'a, 'b> which would both become the equivalent ('a * 'b) tuple.   • What was "The Next Big Thing" when you were just starting out in programming?

    I'm at the beginning of my career and there are lots of things which are being touted as "The Next Big Thing". For example: Dependency Injection (Spring, etc) MVC (Struts, ASP.NET MVC) ORMs (Linq To SQL, Hibernate) Agile Software Development These things have probably been around for some time, but I've only just started out. And don't get me wrong, I think these things are great! So, what was "The Next Big Thing" when you were starting out? When was it? Were people sceptical of it at first? Why? Did you think it would catch on? Did it pan out and become widely accepted/used? If not, why not? EDIT It's been nearly a week since I first posted this question and I can safely say that I did not expect such explosive interest. I asked the question so that I could gain a perspective of what kinds of innovations in programming people thought were most important when they were starting out. At the time of writing this I have read ~95% of all answers. To answer a few questions, the "Next Big Things" I listed are ones that I am currently really excited about and that I had not really been exposed to until I started working. I'm hoping to implement some or all of these in the near future at my current workplace. To many people they are probably old news. In regards to the "is this a real question" debate, I can see that obviously hasn't been settled yet. I feel bad whenever I read a comment saying that these kinds of questions take away from the real meaning of SO. I'm not wholly convinced that it doesn't. On the other hand, I have seen a lot of comments saying what a great question it is. Anyway, I have chosen "The Internet!" as my answer to this question. I don't think (in my very humble opinion, and, it seems many SOers opinions) that many things related to programming can compare. Nowadays every business and their dog has a website which can do anything from simply supplying information to purchasing goods halfway around the world to updating your blog.   • Rsyslog is not working properly, it does not log anything

    I'm running a Debian server and a couple of days ago my rsyslog started to behave very weird, the daemon is running but it doesn't seem to do anything. Many people use the system but I'm the only one with (legal) root access. I'm using the default rsyslogd configuration (if you think is relevant I'll attach it, but it's the one that comes with the package). This is driving me crazy, any idea what is going on here?     I have two tables posts and comments. Table comments have post_id attribute. I need to get all posts with type "open", for which there are no comments with type "good" and created date MAY 1. Is it optimal to use such SQL-query: SELECT posts.* FROM posts WHERE NOT EXISTS ( SELECT comments.id FROM comments WHERE comments.post_id = posts.id AND comments.comment_type = 'good' AND comments.created_at BETWEEN '2010-05-01 00:00:00' AND '2010-05-01 23:59:59') I'm not sure that NOT EXISTS is perfect construction in this situation.
