  • What should a hobbyist do to develop good programming skills after basics?

    So I'll say right here that I'm no professional coder. I'm a hobbyist. And pretty much like other people I feel like I'm doing it wrong. Like this question A feeling that I'm not a good programmer if have began to feel like that. Now I know basically that they say you shouldn't worry and that your good even if you continuously doubt yourself. But, they are talking to him. I'm not like him (in the sense I'm more of a newbie)... I've been coding as a hobbyist for 3 years (3 hobbyist years mind you!) unlike his 10-11 years that he states. Also, the only thing I've probably read in-depth is Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days. And before I continue, just so your not confused about the various questions I've posted on (mostly) iPhone and OpenGL, I have poked and prodded at those two things for a few months each and finally sort of got a hang of both of them. But, from what I've noticed, is that I suck at making good code. For me its not even a debate of whether I'm doing it wrong or not: I can tell (from the various spaghetti code I create and other various discrepancies I, and others, can see and have noted in my code). What is a good way to get rid of these awful habits of mine and do it in a more correct, or if there is no "correct way" then I mean "typical", way?

  • What is the most annoying ignorance you've had in programming?

    What was an annoying programming situation you had that a little bit of knowledge could've solved? That after you struggled with something tedious/annoying/frustrating, you learned one small thing and said "oh, I could've done that?!"? My example - I once suffered through an entire tedious semester of HTML in Notepad... only to discover Notepad++ (and DreamWeaver, IDEs, etc.) a couple of days after submitting the final project.

  • Waiting for data via select not working

    I'm currently working on a project which involves multiple clients connected to a server and waiting for data. I'm using select and monitoring the connection for incoming data. However, the client just continues to print nothing, acting as if select has discovered incoming data. Perhaps I'm attacking this wrong? For the first piece of data the server does send, it is displayed correctly. However, the server then disconnects and the client continues to spew blank lines.   • Sendmail not working from local PHP when headers not specified

    Hi. I'm having trouble getting my local XAMPP server to send emails via my remote SMTP server. In PHP, if I put: $headers = "From: [email protected]\r\n"; mail('[email protected]', 'test', '', $headers); Then this works. However, if I don't specify the header, ie.: mail('[email protected]', 'test', ''); Then this fails. The sendmail.log file says: smtpstatus=554 smtpmsg='554 Message refused.' errormsg='the server did not accept the mail' exitcode=EX_UNAVAILABLE I've tried changing my sendmail command in my php.ini to: sendmail_path = "C:/xampp/sendmail/sendmail.exe -t -f [email protected]" but this doesn't work either. Thanks for any help with this, Dan. ps. this is on windows.

  • USR9108 not connecting to DSL service/not detecting carrier

    As suggested in this answer I've hooked up the phone cable to the USR9108 router. I've entered the information provided by the ISP (VPI/VCI, Username, Password etc) in the ADSL configuration section but the router does not connect to DSL service. The ASDL diagnostics fail in the first step stating that no signal was found. The same phone line when connected to ZyXEL P-660R-T1 v2 modem works successfully. Can anyone tell me how to trouble shoot this issue? Does it have something to do with 2 wire and 4 wire telephone line? PS: whats the difference between ASDL and DSL?

  • UDP packets to IP addresses other than specific ones not arriving and not shown in Wireshark

    I'm writing a service using UDP, but I can't manage to reply to the client. When sending to the client via the DHCP-assigned IP (192.168.1.143) Wireshark shows no sent packets. The server receives and Wireshark shows any packet sent by the client (broadcasted). If I send to a random, unassigned IP Wireshark doesn't show it. I thought the NIC would happily send it, since there is a router in the way - shouldn't Wireshark show it, even though it cannot possibly be received by a remote endpoint? If I send to either the router IP or another (specific, there is only one other) computer, the packet is shown in Wireshark. I am running Windows 7, the firewall is turned off using the control panel. Does the fact that wireshark doesn't show these packets mean that they aren't sent? What reason could there be for showing packets to one IP, but not another, on the same subnet?

  • Can't install Ubuntu 12 into VirtualBox (USB not recognized, ISO would not boot)

    I'm trying out VirtualBox 4.18 and wanted to install Ubuntu 12 as a test. After installing VirtualBox (on Debian squeeze/sid), creating a virtual machine for Ubuntu and pointing it in Settings Storage IDE Controllers to the ISO with the proper version of Ubuntu, checked the "Live CD" option. Tried to define the IDE as master / slave, primary / secondary - all to no effect, and trying to boot this system, I'm getting to the screen which says: FATAL: could not read from the boot medium! System halted I've copied the same ISO to the USB stick, and I can boot from the USB (outside VirtualBox). I've looked at couple of tutorials / walk-through, there's nothing I can see that I would've done wrong. So, how would I configure it to boot from the desired ISO? Below is the snapshot with the current settings (sorry, I don't know how to get them as text).

  • emacs does not open a file from argument and syntax highlight does not work

    In my latest ubuntu box, When I type for example emacs ~/.bashrc, Emacs will start but not open .bashrc. This is true for any file I pass in. I've used Emacs for several years, and have never experienced this problem before. I added (global-font-lock-mode 1);; to my .emacs file, and Emacs does recognize it, for example. "(C++/; Abbrev)", but it won't do syntax highlighting. If you can solve any of these problems, it will be very appreciated. Meet the Author:  Dan Wahlin on HTML5 Canvas Fundamentals   Transcript [Fritz] Hi. This is Fritz Onion. I’m here today with Dan Wahlin to talk about his new course HTML5 Canvas Fundamentals. Dan founded the Wahlin Group, which you can find at thewahlingroup.com, which specializes in ASP.NET, jQuery, Silverlight, and SharePoint consulting. He’s a Microsoft Regional Director and has been awarded Microsoft’s MVP for ASP.NET, Connected Systems, and Silverlight. Dan is on the INETA Bureau’s — Speaker’s Bureau, speaks at conferences and user groups around the world, and has written several books on .NET. Thanks for talking to me today, Dan. [Dan] Always good to talk with you, Fritz. [Fritz] So this new course of yours, HTML5 Canvas Fundamentals, I have to say that most of the really snazzy demos I’ve seen with HTML5 have involved Canvas, so I thought it would be a good starting point to chat with you about why we decided to create a course dedicated just to Canvas. If you want to kind of give us that perspective. [Dan] Sure. So, you know, there’s quite a bit of material out there on HTML5 in general, and as people that have done a lot with HTML5 are probably aware, a lot of HTML5 is actually JavaScript centric. You know, a lot of people when they first learn it, think it’s tags, but most of it’s actually JavaScript, and it just so happens that the HTML5 Canvas is one of those things. And so it’s not just, you know, a tag you add and it just magically draws all these things. You mentioned there’s a lot of cool things you can do from games to there’s some really cool multimedia applications out there where they integrate video and audio and all kinds of things into the Canvas, to more business scenarios such as charting and things along those lines. So the reason we made a course specifically on it is, a lot of the material out there touches on it but the Canvas is actually a pretty deep topic. You can do some pretty advanced stuff or easy stuff depending on what your application requirements are, and the API itself, you know, there’s over 30 functions just in the Canvas API and then a whole set of properties that actually go with that as well. So it’s a pretty big topic, and that’s why we created a course specifically tailored towards just the Canvas. [Fritz] Right. And let’s — let me just review the outline briefly here for everyone. So you start off with an introduction to getting started with Canvas, drawing with the HTML5 Canvas, then you talk about manipulating pixels, and you finish up with building a custom data chart. So I really like your example flow here. I think it will appeal to even business developers, right. Even if you’re not into HTML5 for the games or the media capabilities, there’s still something here for everyone I think working with the Canvas. Which leads me to another question, which is, where do you see the Canvas fitting in to kind of your day-to-day developer, people that are working business applications and maybe vanilla websites that aren’t doing kind of cutting edge stuff with interactivity with users? Is there a still a place for the Canvas in those scenarios? [Dan] Yeah, definitely. I think a lot of us — and I include myself here — over the last few years, the focus has generally been, especially if you’re, let’s say, a PHP or ASP.NET or Java type of developer, we’re kind of accustomed to working on the server side, and, you know, we kind of relied on Flash or Silverlight or these other plug-ins for the client side stuff when it was kind of fancy, like charts and graphs and things along those lines. With the what I call massive shift of applications, you know, mainly because of mobile, to more of client side, one of the big benefits I think from a maybe corporate standard way of thinking of things, since we do a lot of work with different corporations, is that, number one, rather than having to have the plug-in, which of course isn’t going to work on iPad and some of these other devices out there that are pretty popular, you can now use a built-in technology that all the modern browsers support, and that includes things like Safari on the iPad and iPhone and the Android tablets and things like that with their browsers, and actually render some really sophisticated charts. Whether you do it by scratch or from scratch or, you know, get a third party type of library involved, it’s just JavaScript. So it downloads fast so it’s good from a performance perspective; and when it comes to what you can render, it’s extremely robust. You can do everything from, you know, your basic circles to polygons or polylines to really advanced gradients as well and even provide some interactivity and animations, and that’s some of the stuff I touch upon in the class. In fact, you mentioned the last part of the outline there is building a custom data chart and that’s kind of gears towards more of the, what I’d call enterprise or corporate type developer. [Fritz] Yeah, that makes sense. And it’s, you know, a lot of the demos I’ve seen with HTML5 focus on more the interactivity and kind of game side of things, but the Canvas is such a diverse element within HTML5 that I can see it being applicable pretty much anywhere. So why don’t we talk a little bit about some of the specifics of what you cover? You talk about drawing and then manipulating pixels. You want to kind of give us the different ways of working with the Canvas and what some of those APIs provide for you? [Dan] Sure. So going all the way back to the start of the outline, we actually started off by showing different demonstrations of the Canvas in action, and we show some fun stuff — multimedia apps and games and things like that — and then also some more business scenarios; and then once you see that, hopefully it kinds of piques your interest and you go, oh, wow, this is actually pretty phenomenal what you can do. So then we start you off with, so how to you actually draw things. Now, there are some libraries out there that will draw things like graphs, but if you want to customize those or just build something you have from scratch, you need to know the basics, such as, you know, how do you draw circles and lines and arcs and Bezier curves and all those fancy types of shapes that a given chart may have on it or that a game may have in it for that matter. So we start off by covering what I call the core API functions; how do you, for instance, fill a rectangle or convert that to a square by setting the height and the width; how do you draw arcs or different types of curves and there’s different types supported such as I mentioned Bezier curves or quadratic curves; and then we also talk about how do you integrate text into it. You might have some images already that are just regular bitmap type images that you want to integrate, you can do that with a Canvas. And you can even sync video into the Canvas, which actually opens up some pretty interesting possibilities for both business and I think just general multimedia apps. Once you kind of get those core functions down for the basic shapes that you need to be able to draw on any type of Canvas, then we go a little deeper into what are the pixels that are there to manipulate. And that’s one of the important things to understand about the HTML5 Canvas, scalable vector graphics is another thing you can use now in the modern browsers; it’s vector based. Canvas is pixel based. And so we talk about how to do gradients, how can you do transforms, you know, how do you scale things or rotate things, which is extremely useful for charts ’cause you might have text that, you know, flips up on its side for a y-axis or something like that. And you can even do direct pixel manipulation. So it’s really, really powerful. If you want to get down to the RGBA level, you can do that, and I show how to do that in the course, and then kind of wrap that section up with some animation fundamentals. [Fritz] Great. Yeah, that’s really powerful stuff for programmatically rendering data to clients and responding to user inputs. Look forward to seeing what everyone’s going to come up with building this stuff.   • Where to look for a programming partner?

    Say that you want to start a new project (I'm talking about a serious project — e.g if you had an idea that seems good and profitable — not about something you start just to learn a new technology or just for your enjoyment) but you don't feel like you can do it alone since, for example, you lack the experience or the technical skills to go through all the phases needed to go from the idea to the final product. Say also that you don't simply want to hire someone. You want someone who can be as passionate as you in the job, that is “proficient” in and enthusiast of the same technologies as you are and that possibly has a background similar to yours (e.g. you both are students, you both come from a prestigious univerity or just you're both Star Trek nerds). So, basically you don't want a person to tell what to do (e.g. “implement this and that, slave!”) but someone who can be inspiring and bring something new and important to your project. Someone to go with you from the earliest stage — from clearly shaping the project's philosophy to drawing mockups etc. Someone who agrees to share the outcome of the project, that strongly believes in the idea behind it and is completely 50-50 with you. Now the question is: how to improve your chances of finding this person (or persons)? Where would you look at first? For example, if you had a lot of funds and were looking for someone to hire, you'd maybe post an ad in SO careers or jobs.73signals; if you already had a team and were looking for funding, you'd start a project on kickstarter or indiegogo, or you'd go to some startup event. But if you had to find a good partner (and programmer, of course) for you're project, where would you start looking? Which strategies would you use?

  • What's your most controversial programming opinion?

    This is definitely subjective, but I'd like to try to avoid it becoming argumentative. I think it could be an interesting question if people treat it appropriately. The idea for this question came from the comment thread from my answer to the "What are five things you hate about your favorite language?" question. I contended that classes in C# should be sealed by default - I won't put my reasoning in the question, but I might write a fuller explanation as an answer to this question. I was surprised at the heat of the discussion in the comments (25 comments currently). So, what contentious opinions do you hold? I'd rather avoid the kind of thing which ends up being pretty religious with relatively little basis (e.g. brace placing) but examples might include things like "unit testing isn't actually terribly helpful" or "public fields are okay really". The important thing (to me, anyway) is that you've got reasons behind your opinions. Please present your opinion and reasoning - I would encourage people to vote for opinions which are well-argued and interesting, whether or not you happen to agree with them.

This service namespace contains the resources used by the AppFabric Service Bus to support the application. Define the AppFabric Service Bus contract. A contract specifies the signature of the service, the data it exchanges, and other required inputs, behavior specifications, and object invariants. Implement the contract. To implement a service contract, create a class that implements the interface and specify custom runtime behaviors. Configure the service by specifying endpoint and other behavior information. Build and run the service. Build and run the client application. As with any iterative, service-oriented software development, it may not always be appropriate to follow the preceding steps sequentially, or even start from step 1.   • Am I programming too slow?

    I've only been a year in the industry and I've had some problems making estimates for specific tasks. Before you close this, yes, I've already read this: http://programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/648/how-to-respond-when-you-are-asked-for-an-estimate and that's about the same problem I'm having. But I'm looking for a more specific gauge of experiences, something quantifiable or probably other programmer's average performances which I should aim for and base my estimates. The answers range from weeks, and I was looking more for an answer on the level of a task assigned for a day or so. (Note that this doesn't include submitting for QA or documentations, just the actual development time from writing tests if I used TDD, to making the page, before having it submitted to testing) My current rate right now is as follows (on ASP.NET webforms): Right now, I'm able to develop a simple data entry page with a grid listing (no complex logic, just Creating and Reading) on an already built architecture, given one full day's (8 hours) time. Adding complex functionality, and Update and Delete pages add another full day to the task. If I have to start the page from scratch (no solution, no existing website) it takes me another full day. (Not always) but if I encounter something new or haven't done yet it takes me another full day. Whenever I make an estimate that's longer than the expected I feel that others think that I'm lagging a lot behind everyone else. I'm just concerned as there have been expectations that when it's just one page it should take me no more than a full day. Yes, there definitely is more room for improvement. There always is. I have a lot to learn. But I would like to know if my current rate is way too slow, just average, or average for someone no longer than a year in the industry.

    hi guys, I got a gift from a friend, 2 readers for RFID, and some cards (from a Chinese company called daily rfid), the kind of work, because it comes with some demo software written in Delphi, that reads the id of the card (myfare compatible, ISO14443A ) but the problem is that if I try to use the demo to write to them, it doesnt seem to work, it have another demo written in c#, (compiled and executable from /bin/debug, the DL600DemoCSharp.exe), the software opens, but when click on connect, I get this error Unhanded exception.. unable to load DLL 'BasicB.DLL' so I load the dll on windows/system32, but when I try regsvr32 BasicB.dll I get, error the module "BasicB.dll" was loaded but hte entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that "BasicB.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again have written to the company but no response, I program in objective C, so I kind of understand c#, but how to make this cards work? - shall I continue with the delphi, and try to write to them with it - or with c# - either way I would have to write the code to read write to them,, or is there any software to work with this modules?? thanks a lot!

  • Mechanics of reasoning during programming interviews

    This is not the usual "I don't want to write code during an interview", in this question the assumption is that I need to write code during an interview (think about the level of rewriting the quicksort or mergesort from scratch) I know how the algorithm work or I have a basic idea of how I should start working from there, i.e. I don't remember the algorithm by heart I noticed that even on a whiteboard, I always end up writing bugged code or code that doesn't compile. If there's a typo, whatever I usually live with that.. but when there's a crash due to some uncaught particular case I end up losing confidence in my skills. I realize that perhaps interviewers might want to look at how I write code and/or how I solve problems rather than proof-compiling my whiteboard code, but I'd like to ask how should I approach the above problem in mental terms, i.e. what mental steps should I follow when writing code for an interview with the two bullet points above. There must be a unique and agreed series of steps I should follow to avoid getting stuck/caught into particular exception cases (limit cases) that might end up wasting my time and my energies rather than focusing on the overall algorithm for the general case.   • Postfix: LDAP not working (warning: dict_ldap_lookup: Search base not found: 32: No such object)

    I set up LDAP access with postfix. ldapsearch -D "cn=postfix,ou=users,ou=system,[domain]" -w postfix -b "ou=users,ou=people,[domain]" -s sub "(&(objectclass=inetOrgPerson)(mail=[mailaddr]))" delivers the correct entry. The LDAP config file looks like root@server2:/etc/postfix/ldap# cat mailbox_maps.cf server_host = localhost search_base = ou=users,ou=people,[domain] scope = sub bind = yes bind_dn = cn=postfix,ou=users,ou=system,[domain] bind_pw = postfix query_filter = (&(objectclass=inetOrgPerson)(mail=%s)) result_attribute = uid debug_level = 2 The bind_dn and bind_pw should be the same as I used above with ldapsearch. Nevertheless, calling postmap doesn't work: root@server2:/etc/postfix/ldap# postmap -q [mailaddr] ldap:/etc/postfix/ldap/mailbox_maps.cf postmap: warning: dict_ldap_lookup: /etc/postfix/ldap/mailbox_maps.cf: Search base 'ou=users,ou=people,[domain]' not found: 32: No such object If I change LDAP configuration, so that anonymous users have complete access to LDAP olcAccess: {-1}to * by * read then it works: root@server2:/etc/postfix/ldap# postmap -q [mailaddr] ldap:/etc/postfix/ldap/mailbox_maps.cf [user-id] But when I restrict this access to the postfix user: olcAccess: {-1}to * by dn="cn=postfix,ou=users,ou=system,[domain]" read by * break it doesn't work but produces the error printed above (although ldapsearch works, only postmap doesn't). Why doesn't it work when binding with a postfix DN? I think I set up the LDAP ACL for the postfix user correctly, as the ldapsearch command should prove. What can be the reason for this behaviour?
