• Experiences teaching or learning map/reduce/etc before recursion?

  As far as I can see, the usual (and best in my opinion) order for teaching iterting constructs in functional programming with Scheme is to first teach recursion and maybe later get into things like map, reduce and all SRFI-1 procedures. This is probably, I guess, because with recursion the student has everything that's necessary for iterating (and even re-write all of SRFI-1 if he/she wants to do so). Now I was wondering if the opposite approach has ever been tried: use several procedures from SRFI-1 and only when they are not enough (for example, to approximate a function) use recursion. My guess is that the result would not be good, but I'd like to know about any past experiences with this approach.

• Using variables within Attributes in C#

  We have some Well-Attributed DB code, like so: [Display(Name = "Phone Number")] public string Phone { get; set; } Since it is quite generic we'd like to use it again, but with a different string in the Name part of the attribute. Since it's an attribute it seems to want things to be const, so we tried: const string AddressType = "Student "; [Display(Name = AddressType + "Phone Number")] public string Phone { get; set; } This seems to work alright, except that having a const string means we can't overwrite it in any base classes, thereby removing the functionality that we originally were intending to add, and exposing my question: Is there a way to use some sort of variable inside of an attribute so that we can inherit and keep the attribute decorations?

  Hi, I have some problems retrieving specific tuples. I am actually a student trying to build a Room management system. I have two tables: Room(roomID,hotelname,rate) and Reservation(resID,arriveDate,departDate,roomID). I am not sure how to retrieve the rooms that are available between 2 specific dates. This was the query that i used. SELECT Room.roomID,hotelname,rate FROM Room LEFT JOIN Reservation on ( Room.roomID=Reservation.resID and arriveDate >='2010-02-16' and departDate <='2010-02-20' ) GROUP BY roomID,hotelname,rate HAVING count(*)=0;' but it returns an empty set. Can any1 be kind enough to tell me what mistake i am doing??

  I don't know why but the data type in this code makes a trouble when the id in the url starts with the number zero like this: http://localhost/exp/update.php?id=03A43 In this case the id is 03A43. And my query looks like this: mysql_select_db("school", $con); $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM student WHERE IDNO=".(int)$_GET['id']); ?> There is no problem in the design if the id does not start with the number zero. What might be the proper data type for numbers beginning in zero?

  I'm writing a SQL statement to select a user on a table if that user does not exist on another table, then I want to pull in all their data from another table then I'll be outputting all that in Coldfusion. How do I do this? I have tried, my atempt is below: pro_profile == All employees mod_userStatus == All Professional Staff members I am doing the not exists to remove professional stuff to just get our student staff. mod_StudentCertifications is a listing of the certifications they (students) hold. If we do an AND statement between the where statements it returns no users, or only users that meet both conditions, if we do an OR it will return users with only 1 condition. I need it first Match the not exists then proceed to the exists statement. Is that do able? • Divide people into teams for most satisfaction

  Just a curiosity question. Remember when in class groupwork the professor would divide people up into groups of a certain number (n)? Some of my professors would take a list of n people one wants to work with and n people one doesn't want to work with from each student, and then magically turn out groups of n where students would be matched up with people they prefer and avoid working with people they don't prefer. To me this algorithm sounds a lot like a Knapsack problem, but I thought I would ask around about what your approach to this sort of problem would be.

• Game Objects Talking To Each Other

  What is a good way of dealing with objects and having them talk to each other? Up until now all my games hobby/student have been small so this problem was generally solved in a rather ugly way, which lead to tight integration and circular dependencies. Which was fine for the size of projects I was doing. However my projects have been getting bigger in size and complexity and now I want to start re-using code, and making my head a simpler place. The main problem I have is generally along the lines of Player needs to know about the Map and so does the Enemy, this has usually descended into setting lots of pointers and having lots of dependencies, and this becomes a mess quickly. I have thought along the lines of a message style system. but I cant really see how this reduces the dependencies, as I would still be sending the pointers everywhere. Thanks. PS: I guess this has been discussed before, but I don't know what its called just the need I have.

  Hi guys, I'm creating a shopping cart application and I'm having some issues with implementing a session state for my arraylist. in my page load i declared if (Session["Cart"] == null) { Session["Cart"] = new ArrayList(); } else { ArrayList cart = (ArrayList)Session["Cart"]; } to create the session if it doesn't exist yet. then i have an event handler for a button to add items to the arraylist protected void onClick_AddBooking(object sender, EventArgs e) { int ClassID = Convert.ToInt32(Request.QueryString.Get("Class_Id")); ArrayList cart1 = new ArrayList(); cart1 = Session["Cart"]; cart1.Add(ClassID); i'm guessing i just don't know how to handle session states yet, thus the confusion. I'm essentially storing the class_ID then when the student confirms i'll store that to the DB and associate that ID with the Class Details. Thanks in advance guys!

When I'm reading about enterprise software platforms, I mostly read about these two: Java Enterprise Edition, JavaEE .NET and Windows Communication Foundation By "enterprise software platforms" I mean frameworks and application servers with support for the same characteristics as J2EE and WCF has: [JavaEE] provide functionality to deploy fault-tolerant, distributed, multi-tier Java software, based largely on modular components running on an application server. WCF is designed in accordance with service oriented architecture principles to support distributed computing where services are consumed by consumers. Clients can consume multiple services and services can be consumed by multiple clients. Services are loosely coupled to each other. Is there any alternatives to these two "enterprise software platforms"? Isn't any other programming languages used in a bigger rate for this problem area? I.e Why isn't there any popular application servers for C++/Qt?

  Hi guys, Recently I've being given a chance to develop a PMS (Practice Management System) software for a small physiotherapy clinic. I'm a computer science student and my course is predominately told on Linux. However, my client runs all their computers on vista or Windows 7. My ideas are to develop the client front end in Visual C# and access a central postgresql server. I'm a beginner in Windows Programming so I'm after advice on best practice on implement user rights and access levels in C# (WPF or Windows FORM). I've had a look into Credential class in Visual C# and access control list but please share your thoughts.   Hello. I am a student programmer who has taken up Objective-C on my free time as my college doesn't teach it. We have only used Java and basic C so far. I am in the middle of making a program for the iPod and was wondering if there was any type of way to call a method in a class similar to the way a Focus Listener does in Java? I have a view that I would like to call a refresh method (to update the newly inputted titles of buttons from another view) when the view is put at the top and visible again. Is this too easy or is there a more methodical way of doing that? I have tried to just call the method from the other view class but it does not seem to work (says the other class is either undefined or may not accept the method call and crashes on execution). Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

  This is not a technical question, but rather a social and methodical one. I am a computer sciences student and I usually have really tough programming assignments. I don`t know if it is only happening to me but sometimes, particularly when deadline is approaching, i find myself in a harsh situation. I cannot find my mistake in the code or come up with a another great idea. Then boredom comes in and the problem begins to seem unsolvable. I know there are more-than-great professional coders here. I would like to learn their ideas to cope with this situation. Is it better to focus on something else for a while and try again or try harder and harder and look for the solution on the net etc...

  Hello, I have been developing applications based on C# (.net) and Java (J2EE) from the last 3 years. But, now I feel, Java, C# makes you lame (from learning point of view) and you can develop your apps quickly but you fail to understand the basic underlying concepts of programming. So, I am trying to learn C++, but I find it a little "confusing" due to pointer, multiple inheritance, some conventions and other concepts of C++ which don't exist in Java.   hi i am a student and just start learning low level c programming.i tried to understand read() and write() methods with this program. #include <unistd.h> #include <stdlib.h> main() { char *st; st=calloc(sizeof(char),2);//allocate memory for 2 char read(0,st,2); write(1,st,2); } i was expecting that it would give segmentation fault when i would try to input more than 2 input characters.but when i execute program and enter " asdf " after giving " as " as output it executes "df" command. i want to know why it doesn't give segmentation fault when we assign more than 2 char to a string of size 2.and why is it executing rest(after 2 char)of input as command instead of giving it as output only? also reading man page of read() i found read() should give EFAULT error,but it doesn't. I am using linux.
