  • Software to cache a web application for use offline

    My boss quite regularly has to demo our web application to clients in a situation with no wifi available and sketchy 3G access, quite often the 3G lets him down. I have considered setting a copy of our server up in a virtual machine on his laptop so he could demo it offline, but I fear this will just introduce more headaches when he forgets how to boot the VM up. What I'd ideally like is an app that records you logging into a web app, saves copies of all the pages and ties the links and buttons you click up to offline copies of the pages it saves. So you could run through the demonstration you're going to give and have it cache the pages. When you then click the same buttons and links in offline mode it will present the relevant offline pages. Does such a thing exist? Can anyone recommend any alternative solutions to this problem? Thanks, Anthony

  • Volume display for laptop missing after driver update

    I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, and I just updated my audio drivers to be able to use Stereo Mix. It's a SigmaTel audio driver. Prior to the update, whenever I used the hardware buttons to update volume or mute/unmute speakers, it would always have a nice display like this one: But, for volume instead of screen brightness. The hardware buttons still work fortunately, but the volume display is gone. Is there a place I can configure this setting and re-enable it? The speaker icon in task tray was also disabled with the update, but I re-enabled that from the Control Panel. Is this simply gone with the driver update? Thanks for the help!

  • MVC design in Cocoa - are all 3 always necessary? Also: naming conventions, where to put Controller

    I'm new to MVC although I've read a lot of papers and information on the web. I know it's somewhat ambiguous and there are many different interpretations of MVC patterns.. but the differences seem somewhat minimal My main question is - are M, V, and C always going to be necessary to be doing this right? I haven't seen anyone address this in anything I've read. Examples (I'm working in Cocoa/Obj-c although that shouldn't much matter).. 1) If I have a simple image on my GUI, or a text entry field that is just for a user's convenience and isn't saved or modified, these both would be V (view) but there's no M (no data and no domain processing going on), and no C to bridge them. So I just have some aspects that are "V" - seems fine 2) I have 2 different and visible windows that each have a button on them labeled as "ACTIVATE FOO" - when a user clicks the button on either, both buttons press in and change to say "DEACTIVATE FOO" and a third window appears with label "FOO". Clicking the button again will change the button on both windows to "ACTIVATE FOO" and will remove the third "FOO" window. In this case, my V consists of the buttons on both windows, and I guess also the third window (maybe all 3 windows). I definitely have a C, my Controller object will know about these buttons and windows and will get their clicks and hold generic states regarding windows and buttons. However, whether I have 1 button or 10 button, my window is called "FOO" or my window is called "BAR", this doesn't matter. There's no domain knowledge or data here - just control of views. So in this example, I really have "V" and "C" but no "M" - is that ok? 3) Final example, which I am running in to the most. I have a text entry field as my View. When I enter text in this, say a number representing gravity, I keep it in a Model that may do things like compute physics of a ball while taking in to account my gravity parameter. Here I have a V and an M, but I don't understand why I would need to add a C - a controller would just accept the signals from the View and pass it along to the Model, and vice versa. Being as the C is just a pure passthrough, it's really "junk" code and isn't making things any more reusable in my opinion. In most situations, when something changes I will need to change the C and M both in nearly identical ways. I realize it's probably an MVC beginner's mistake to think most situations call for only V and M.. leads me in to next subject 4) In Cocoa / Xcode / IB, I guess my Controllers should always be an instantiated object in IB? That is, I lay all of my "V" components in IB, and for each collection of View objects (things that are related) I should have an instantiated Controller? And then perhaps my Models should NOT be found in IB, and instead only found as classes in Xcode that tie in with Controller code found there. Is this accurate? This could explain why you'd have a Controller that is not really adding value - because you are keeping consistent.. 5) What about naming these things - for my above example about FOO / BAR maybe something that ends in Controller would be the C, like FancyWindowOpeningController, etc? And for models - should I suffix them with like GravityBallPhysicsModel etc, or should I just name those whatever I like? I haven't seen enough code to know what's out there in the wild and I want to get on the right track early on Thank you in advance for setting me straight or letting me know I'm on the right track. I feel like I'm starting to get it and most of what I say here makes sense, but validation of my guessing would help me feel confident..

  • Adobe Encore CS4 DVD Menu Button Not Functioning

    Hello, I've built a DVD in Adobe Encore CS4, and everything works great in the preview. However, when I go and burn to DVD, we have one issue. On the DVD menu, there are two text buttons, with no background when unselected, and have a background when selected. That allows the user to know which is selected. Like I said, everything works great in the preview, but the background that is supposed to appear when the button is selected does not. The buttons work, but there is no background when selected.   • Is there any way I can add alternative key binding to a feature in compiz?

    I was wondering is there any way to add additional, alternative key binding to a particular feature in compiz? I am using Wall plugin and on my ThinkPad it is convenient to switch between horizontal workspaces with media buttons for browser navigation. But there just two of them, so I have to use completely different combinations to switch between workspaces vertically and that would very helpful if I can also use similar kind of combination to switch horizontally as well in addition to those media buttons. Is there a way maybe to send a message to the compiz to execute particular command? That would solve the issue.

What I would like to do, is take this string and apply the values to the original form when the user goes back to the form as 'pre-selected' checkboxes, indicated that the user has already selected those values previously, and keeping those values in the database if they choose to edit any other information in the form. I'm assuming this would need to be done with javascript but if there is a way to do it with PHP I'd rather do it that way.

    I am having some difficulties implementing Paypal buttons with backbone.js The problem is that the button is implemented in a script tag: <script src="paypal-button.min.js?merchant=YOUR_MERCHANT_ID" data-button="buynow" data-name="My product" data-amount="1.00"></script> which i cant run from Handlebars.js because the </script> tag is closing the handlebars <script> I cant use eval(), or i don't understand how i am supposed to do that with the . So there you have it. i am kind of stuck. I am out of ideas on how to implement this button with backbone.js the last resort is to ask the server to produce html pages with the script in them and then load them to the page. i am just refusing to believe that JavaScript has no way to take care of this. Please help. This question relates to another question i asked in this subject. Is it possible to use JavaScript inside handlebars.js template Thank you.

  • wireless printer - entering WPA - is there a quicker way?

    I have a wireless printer (Brother DCP-585CW). The wireless setup instruction says I should enter the WPA key to the printer. The key is entered using up and down buttons on the printer. So, I am supposed to enter 64 characters using up and down buttons. To enter 1 character, it takes on average (24+10)/2 = 17 times pressing the button (digits start after 24 letters). So 17*64 = 1088 times. Is there a quicker way to setup a wireless printer? Maybe there is a Windows program that discovers printers connected to computer through USB or Ethernet (my printer has both sockets) and allows to pre-configure it for wireless usage (enter the long WPA key)? Update There is BRAdmin program and it allows to set up almost all wireless settings... almost - all except WPA :(

  • Viewsonic monitor keeps showing its on-screen menu incessantly

    Since yesterday my Viewsonic 22" monitor (VX2255wmb) keeps showing its on-screen menu incessantly, without my touching any of its buttons. The menu comes on in the centre of the screen, stays on for 8-10 seconds, disappears for a second or two, then repeats the cycle. This happens whenever there's a signal being sent to the monitor. I can't actually navigate the menu when it appears on-screen. Pressing the power button, or the Up and Down buttons on its right edge dismiss the menu, only for it to reappear again. These symptoms have appeared before, but earlier they'd stop after 5-10 mins. The power button on the monitor has always been iffy, but now it doesn't seem to be working at all--have to switch off power supply from mains when I leave my desk. Using DVI input on this monitor as my HP desktop has DVI output.

  • (iOS) UI Automation AlertPrompt button/textField accessiblity

    I'm having a bit of trouble with UI Automation (the built in to iOS tool) when it comes to alertView. First off, I'm not sure where I can set the accessibilityLabel and such for the buttons that are on the alertView. Secondly, although I am not getting an error, I can't get my textField to actually set the value of the textField to something.   • How to test which button is stuck

    My laptop's keyboard is prone to buttons sticking. The fix is to just press the same button again. Now when it is the letter/number keys are stuck, it's just a matter of putting the cursor in a text field, and seeing what characters appear. However, when it is one of the modifier keys, or tab, or enter or a few other buttons, it gets harder to tell which key is to blame. Trying to type can result in all sort of shortcuts being triggered. Is there anyway to test what input is being recieved? Also, I'm guessing this is a hardware issue, but if anyone knows of any possible causes/solutions it'd be appreciated. It's a Dell Studio 17, and the problem occurs under Windows and Linux.

  • Action button: only true once per press

    I'm using SFML2.0 and am trying to make a wrapper class for my controller/joystick. I read all the input data from my controller and send it off to my controllable object. I want to have two types of buttons per button press, one that is continues(true false state ) and one that is an action and is set to false after the next frame update. Here is an example of how I set my button A to true or false with the SFML api. Whereas data is my struct of buttons, and A holds my true/false state every update. data.A = sf::Joystick::isButtonPressed(i,st::input::A); But I've also added "data.actionA" which represents the one time action state. Basically what I want is for actionA to be set false after the update its been set to true. I'm trying to keep track of the previous state. But I seem to fall into this loop where it toggles between true and false every update. Anyone an idea? Edit: Since I can't answer my own question yet here is my solution: data.actionA = data.A = sf::Joystick::isButtonPressed(i,st::input::A); if(prev.A) data.actionA = false; First I always set the actionA to the value of the button state. Then I check if the previous state of A is true. If so we negate the value.

  • How to Disable Touchpad tap in Toshiba Tecra R850 in Oneiric

    I know there's a lot of similar questions, but nothing I have tried here works yet - perhaps I was doing it wrong. New Laptop - Toshiba Tecra R850 with an install of Oneiric. Mostly things are working well, but I have a problem with the touchpad (or whatever it's called) - whenever I use it for moving the mouse pointer I accidentally tap on it - basically I am clicking all over the place by accident. So I want to disable the tap-as-click (after all, I have buttons for clicks too). I open up "Mouse and Touchpad" and on the Touchpad tab I check "Disable touchpad when typing" and UNcheck "Enable mouse clicks with touchpad". This does not achieve anything. The only piece of code I had which worked at all was to completely disable the touchpad by removing the driver - but that is no use since I WANT the mousing ability, just not the tap. In fact, even that would be good if I could still use the little blue stick thing and the other buttons - but it disabled them too. Tried installing touchpad indicator but it didn't seem to want to install. There were suggestions to put stuff into /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d so I edited 50-synaptics.conf and added the line Option "TapButton1" "0" But it didn't work and I'm not surprised since the place, syntax and values were all a guess really...     I have a laptop mySN QMG6 / Chiligreen Mobilitas NW which is Quanta TW9 barebone with intel i3 and nvidia 335m GT onboard. On ubuntu distros 10.04, 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 i had problem with changing screen backlight with nouveau and nvidia drivers. FN+F4/F5 buttons did not change my brightness. I tried to edit xorg.conf, adding Option “RegistryDwords” “EnableBrightnessControl=1? Also tried to add some lines to grug acpi_osi="Linux" acpi_backlight=vendor Neither worked for me. Today I installed Ubuntu 12.04 beta2 and... With nouveau driver my FN key works, and changes the brightness (is it a new 3.0.22 linux kernel, or patched nouveau driver, i don't know). This is a big step forward. But, when installing proprietary nvidia driver (295.33) FN button stops working and i can't change brightness. I also tried workaround with xorg and grub with no result. Tried to install acpi from apt - no result. Is there anything left to try? I really need that nvidia driver working with FN keys, as i would like to have a working 3D acceleration. P.S. Does the nouveau driver has 3d acceleration like nvidia drivers??? If there is need to provide some log data, please write what should i print, as i'm a bit new to Ubuntu. P.P.S. Same problems i had with other Linux distros (Mint, Fedora and others) P.P.P.S. Other FN buttons work with both drivers (Mute, VOL UP/DOWN, WiFi on/off, Bluetooth, Sleep, Start/Pause, Stop, Next/Prev song)

  • Autoscaling in a modern world&hellip;. Part 1

    It has been a while since I have had time to sit down and blog.  I need to make sure I take the time.  It helps me to focus on technology and not let the administrivia keep me from doing the things I love. I have been focusing on the cloud for the last couple of years.  Specifically the  PaaS platform from Microsoft called Azure.  Time to dig in.. I wanted to explore Autoscaling.  Autoscaling is not native part of Azure.  The platform has the needed connection points.  You can write code that looks at the health and performance of your application components and react to needed scaling changes.  But that means you have to write all the code.  Luckily, an add on to the Enterprise Library provides a lot of code that gets you a long way to being able to autoscale without having to start from scratch. The tool set is primarily composed of a Autoscaler object that you need to host.  This object, when hosted and configured, looks at the performance criteria you specify and adjusts your application based on your needs.  Sounds perfect. I started with the a set of HOL’s that gave me a good basis to understand the mechanics.  I worked through labs 1 and 2 just to get the feel, but let’s start our saga at the end of lab3.  Lab3 end results in a web application, hosted in Azure and a console app running on premise.  The web app has a few buttons on it.  One set adds messages to a queue, another removes them.  A second set of buttons drives processor utilization to 100%.  If you want to guess, a safe bet is that the Autoscaler is configured to react to a queue that has filled up or high cpu usage.  We will continue our saga in the next post…

  • Design pattern for window management in a Java Swing app

    I've just started creating my very first little Java Swing app. When the program opens, it brings up a single, simple window with a label and a couple buttons. Clicking one of those buttons is supposed to wipe out the welcome screen and replace it with a totally different panel. I'm not sure what the best way to create that functionality is. One method would be to pass my JFrame as an argument into... just about every other component, but that feels hacky to me. Or, there's making each panel double as an action listener, but that doesn't seem right, either. Is there a design pattern I should be applying here? "Replace the contents of the main — and only — window" must be a reasonably common operation. A name for the pattern would be enough; I can use Google on my own from there. (I wouldn't say no to a longer explanation, though.)

  • Dynamic Forms: Pattern or AntiPattern?

    I'm sure you've seen it. The database has a bunch of tables called Forms, Controls,FormsControls, ControlSets, Actions and the program that queries these tables has a dynamically generated user interface. It will read all the forms, load a home page that has links to them all, or embed them in some tabbed or paged home page, and for each of those forms it will read the various text boxes, check boxes, radio buttons, submit buttons, combo boxes, labels and whatnot from the controls and form-to-control join tables, lay those elements out according to the database and link all the controls to logic according to other rules in the database. To me, this is an anti-pattern. It actually make the application more difficult to maintain because the design of it is now spread out into multiple different systems. Also, the database is not source controlled. Sure, it may make one or two changes go more quickly, after you've analyzed the program anyway to understand how to change the data and as long as you don't stray from the sort of changes that were anticipated and accounted for, but that's often just not sustainable. What say you?

    I have an XBox joypad: Bus 005 Device 004: ID 045e:0289 Microsoft Corp. Xbox Controller S When I start Bastion from the terminal the following is output: Number of joysticks: 1 Number of buttons for joystick: 0 - 10 Number of axes for joystick: 0 - 6 Number of PovHats for joystick: 0 - 1 When I load up the game it displays a message "press any key" and at this point, if I press a button on the joypad it advances to the main menu. However, the up/down/left/right controls do not work and the button will not operate the menu. When I enter the control configuration, the joypad section is disabled and displays a message "joypad not detected." If I enter the control customization and try to reconfigure one of the controls, noises can be heard when pressing joypad buttons, but the input is otherwise ignored. Further information which may or may not be relevant: My controller is an original Xbox controller, not a 360 controller. XNA games on Windows apparently only work with Xbox360 controllers because they use xinput rather than direct input, see eg here. My controller works (almost) properly with MonoGame trunk samples, but Bastion uses a modified MonoGame and crashes when run against trunk, so I can't add debugging to see where the problem is. Bug can also be reproduced with a Xbox 360 wired controller.

  • Compiz not drawing window controls in ubuntu 11.10

    I have recently installed driver for my ATI graphic card in my Dell Studio laptop. I have also read this somewhere on the web that Ubuntu enables compiz window manager by default if your hardware can run it. Is it true ? In my case before Installing graphic card driver the window manager was Metacity, but now I have compiz as my Window manager. I found this out uisng Displex Indicator applet also confirmed by wmctrl -m. From the time I have installed graphic card drivers, the window manager(Compiz) is not drawing window control buttons for some of the windows. For example if I open a terminal I have to close it using key board shortcuts or use the File - Quit option in app-menu. Also I am not able to move the window because of this. From then when-ever I find a window without window control buttons I am restarting the window manager using Displex Indicator applet. But this is very annoying and also consumes a lot of time(when I am doing my work). Can any one suggest any solution for this. What are up's and down's of using Compiz Vs Metacity.

  • displaying multi-section html documents - best practices

    I work at a research organization and we publish a lot of large-ish documents, usually organized in sections. What I want to know is how best to present these multi-section documents on our website. Presently, what I do is load the entire document as a single page, with each section as its own div. Then I show and hide divs as needed via a table of contents and "next" and "prev" buttons. The advantages to this are mainly: 1) that you can move between sections very quickly, 2) it produces consistent analytics (when a page is loaded, I know a report is being read). The disadvantages, however, are real: Readers can't take advantage of browser back/forward buttons to move between sections. It's complicated to create direct links to individual sections (I can do it with javascript but it's not easy for other people to grab and share). For long reports, you have to wait for the full report to load before you can move around (and that can include hordes of images and charts).
