• How best to modernize the 2002-era J2EE app?

  I have this friend.... I have this friend who works on a java ee application (j2ee) application started in the early 2000's. Currently they add a feature here and there, but have a large codebase. Over the years the team has shrunk by 70%. [Yes, the "i have this friend is". It's me, attempting to humorously inject teenage high-school counselor shame into the mix] Java, Vintage 2002 The application uses EJB 2.1, struts 1.x, DAO's etc with straight jdbc calls (mixture of stored procedures and prepared statements). No ORM. For caching they use a mixture of OpenSymphony OSCache and a home-grown cache layer. Over the last few years, they have spent effort to modernize the UI using ajax techniques and libraries. This largely involves javascript libaries (jquery, yui, etc). Client Side On the client side, the lack of upgrade path from struts1 to struts2 discouraged them from migrating to struts2. Other web frameworks became popular (wicket, spring , jsf). Struts2 was not the "clear winner". Migrating all the existing UI from Struts1 to Struts2/wicket/etc did not seem to present much marginal benefit at a very high cost. They did not want to have a patchwork of technologies-du-jour (subsystem X in Struts2, subsystem Y in Wicket, etc.) so developer write new features using Struts 1. Server Side On the server side, they looked into moving to ejb 3, but never had a big impetus. The developers are all comfortable with ejb-jar.xml, EJBHome, EJBRemote, that "ejb 2.1 as is" represented the path of least resistance. One big complaint about the ejb environment: programmers still pretend "ejb server runs in separate jvm than servlet engine". No app server (jboss/weblogic) has ever enforced this separation. The team has never deployed the ejb server on a separate box then the app server. The ear file contains multiple copies of the same jar file; one for the 'web layer' (foo.war/WEB-INF/lib) and one for the server side (foo.ear/). The app server only loads one jar. The duplications makes for ambiguity. Caching As for caching, they use several cache implementations: OpenSymphony cache and a homegrown cache. Jgroups provides clustering support Now What? The question: The team currently has spare cycles to to invest in modernizing the application? Where would the smart investor spend them? The main criteria: 1) productivity gains. Specifically reducing the time to develope new subsystems features and reduced maintenance. 2) performance/scalability. They do not care about fashion or techno-du-jour street cred. What do you all recommend? On the persistence side Switch everything (or new development only) to JPA/JPA2? Straight hibernate? Wait for Java EE 6? On the client/web-framework side: Migrate (some or all) to struts2? wicket? jsf/jsf2? As for caching: terracotta? ehcache? coherence? stick with what they have? how best to take advantage of the huge heap sizes that the 64-bit jvms offer? Thanks in advance.

  My setup is fairly simple: I have a web front-end, back-end is spring-wired. I am using AOP to add a layer of security on my rpc services. • Base64.encodeBase64URLSafeString() could not find method error in eclipse (Android project).

  I have an Android project that is using the Base64.encodeBase64URLSafeString commons method. The part that does the Base64 is in another java project. I have added the java project to the android project through the "Project" tab in the Build Path. I have already linked both projects to commons-codec thinking that this might be the problem but am still getting the following error in Eclipse. Both project have no errors. Could not find method org.apache.commons.codec.binary.Base64.encodeBase64URLSafeString, referenced from method com.mydomain.android.licensegenerator.client.LicenseLoader.doSha1AndBase64Encryption What might I be doing wrong?

• Using Simple XML and getting NoClassDefFoundError in Android

  I'm trying to use Simple XML to convert my java objects to XML format in my Android application. I'm getting NoClassDefFoundError at line Serializer serializer = new Persister(); java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org.simpleframework.xml.core.Persister I have simple-xml-2.6.1.jar in project class path and when I got NoClassDefFoundError I also put these 3 jars in classpath stax-1.2.0.jar stax-api-1.0.1.jar xpp3-1.1.3_8.jar but made no use. Still having NoClassDefFoundError. Any kind of help will be appreciated.Thank you.

• Why it's failed to load main-class manifest attribute from jar-file?

  I have created a jar file in this way jar cf jar-file input-files. Now I try to run it. This does not work: jre -cp app.jar MainClass (jre command is not found). This java -jar main.jar also does not work (Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from main.jar). I also found out that To run an application packaged as a JAR file (version 1.2 -- requires Main-Class manifest header) What is the "Main-Class manifest header" how do I create it and where do I put it? ADDED I made a mistake in my original question. The second command I tried was: java -jar main.jar.

• JSON parser for J2ME

  I need a basic JSON parser that works with J2ME / CLDC 1.1. A Google search returns tons of answers on this (some even on stackoverflow), but it appears that all point to libraries and solutions that are no longer available (for example, lots point to an implementation that is supposed to be on the json.org site, but at least I can't find anything that isn't J2SE only there). My best hope so far is the source linked here: https://meapplicationdevelopers.dev.java.net/mobileajax.html, but from that one I can't even find a straight forward way to download the code. Given the mature state of Java in all other aspects, surely there must be somewhere I can get a pre-compiled JAR to use for parsing JSON from J2ME?

  It seems the java.net.NetworkInterface implementation of android does not have a byte[] getHardwareAddress() method http://developer.android.com/reference/java/net/NetworkInterface.html I've found several forums of people trying to do this with no definitive answer, I need to get a somewhat cross-device UUID, so I can't rely on phone numbers or in ANDROID_ID (which can be overwritten and which I think depends on the user having a google account) http://developer.android.com/reference/android/provider/Settings.Secure.html#ANDROID_ID In linux you can use ifconfig or read from /proc/net/arp and you can easily get the Hardware address. Is there a file in android that I can read? There has to be a way to get this address since it's shown in the "Settings About Phone Status" of the phone.

• Automatically extracting inline XSD from WSDL into XSD file(s)

  I am using a third party Web Service whose definition and implementation are beyond my control. This web service will change in the future. The Web Service should be used to generate an XML file which contains some of the same data (represented by the same XSD types) as the Web Service plus some extra information generated by the program. My approach: create my own XSD referring to the XSD definitions of the WSDL of the called web service (This XSD also includes XSD types for the extra information obviously.) use a Java XML databinding framework (like ADB or JiXB) to generate the databinding classes from my own XSD file from step 1 use a Java SOAP framework (like Axis2 or CXF) with the same databinding framework to generate the databinding classes from the WSDL (This would enable me to use the objects retrieved by the web service directly in the generation of the XML.) The XSD types I am going to use in my own XSD file, but are defined in the WSDL, are subject to change. Whenever they change, I would like to automatically process the XSD and WSDL databinding again. (If the change is significant enough, this might trigger some development effort.(But usually not.)) My problem: In step 1 I need an XSD referring to the same types as used by the Web Service. The WSDL is referring to another WSDL, which is referring to another WSDL etc. Eventually there is an WSDL with the needed inline XSD types. As far as I know there is no way to directly reference the inline XSD types of a WSDL from an XSD. The approach I would think most viable, is to include an extra step in the automatic processing (before the databinding) that extracts the inline XSD from the WSDL into other XSD file(s). These other XSD file(s) can then be referred to by my own XSD file. Things I'd like to avoid: Manually copy pasting the inline XSD into an XSD file (I am looking for an automatic process.) Any manual steps.(Like the determining the WSDL that contains the inline types manually.(The location of that WSDL does change as well.)) Using xsd:any in my own XSD. I would like my own XSD file to be correct. Using a non-Java technology(like .NET) Huge amounts of implementation (but hints on how you would implement such an extraction are welcome anyway) PS: I found some similar questions, but they all had responses like: WTH would you want to do that? That is the reason for my rather large background story.

I don't want to install a JDK, I don't want the source code for the entire VM, just the source for the JDK libs, so that when I navigate to a Java class in Eclipse, it opens up the source code. Is it possible to download just src.zip (or a zip that contains src.zip)?   The goal is to have an applet run from a jar file. The problem is that the applet only seems to want to run from an exploded jar file. • Mutable class as a child of an immutable class

  I want to have immutable Java objects like this (strongly simplyfied): class Immutable { protected String name; public Immutable(String name) { this.name = name; } public String getName() { return name; } } In some cases the object should not only be readable but mutable, so I could add mutability through inheritance: public class Mutable extends Immutable { public Mutable(String name) { super(name); } public void setName(String name) { super.name = name; } } While this is technically fine, I wonder if it conforms with OOP and inheritance that mutable is also of type immutable. I want to avoid the OOP crime to throw UnsupportedOperationException for immutable object, like the Java collections API does. What do you think? Any other ideas?

  Hi, I am using a small java smtp library (http://code.google.com/p/subethasmtp/), by this I need to parse the incoming emails in separate components viz body, attachments etc. I am trying to use mime4j , but the documentation suggests that mime4j can only give event notification or token notification and nothing else. For stripping out body and attachments etc I had to use my own custom logic inside the event handlers. Is my observation correct? If yes then how can I use mime4j to use for my requirement. Please suggest. I badly need an approach that takes in the smtp data stream and returns me with an array of attachment references or streams in fully parsed out form in java. Please help. I'm trying to do something like this but it doesn't work: Map<String, String> propertyMap = new HashMap<String, String>(); propertyMap = JacksonUtils.fromJSON(properties, Map.class); But the IDE says: 'Unchecked assignment Map to Map<String,String>' What's the right way to do this? I'm only using Jackson because that's what is already available in the project, is there a native Java way of converting to/from JSON? In PHP I would simply json_decode($str) and I'd get back an array. I need basically the same thing here. Thanks!

  I've been researching nosql options available for .NET lately and MongoDB is emerging as a clear winner in terms of availability and support, so tonight I decided to give it a go. I downloaded version 1.2.4 (Windows x64 binary) from the mongodb site and ran it with the following options: C:\mongodb\bin>mkdir data C:\mongodb\bin>mongod -dbpath ./data --cpu --quiet I then loaded up the latest mongodb-csharp driver from http://github.com/samus/mongodb-csharp and immediately ran the benchmark program. Having heard about how "amazingly fast" MongoDB is, I was rather shocked at the poor benchmark performance. For starters, I can get better non-batch insert performance from SQL Server Express. What really struck me, however, was the slow performance of the find_nnnn queries. Why is retrieving data from MongoDB so slow? What am I missing? Edit: This was all on the local machine, no network latency or anything. MongoDB's CPU usage ran at about 75% the entire time the test was running. Edit 2: Also, I ran a trace on the benchmark program and confirmed that 50% of the CPU time spent was waiting for MongoDB to return data, so it's not a performance issue with the C# driver.

• Android XMLRPC Fault Code

  Hey, We have been using XMLRPC for android and it was working well until we got our hands dirty with Base64 encoding for byte[] (images) -- (we did base64_string.replace("/","$$") for transmission). We have tried undoing the changes and its looking an XMLRPC error. We are getting the following error in the DDMS: 06-10 23:27:02.970: DEBUG/Test(343): org.xmlrpc.android.XMLRPCFault: XMLRPC Fault: [code 0] 06-10 23:27:02.970: DEBUG/Test(343): at org.xmlrpc.android.XMLRPCClient.callEx(XMLRPCClient.java:308) 06-10 23:27:02.970: DEBUG/Test(343): at org.xmlrpc.android.XMLRPCMethod.run(XMLRPCMethod.java:33) Just before this I checked the body (xml message -- which is perfect) and the response received: 06-10 23:27:02.940: INFO/System.out(343): Response received: org.apache.http.message.BasicHttpResponse@437762f8 Since it the message is not even reaching our cloud, the issue is with XMLRPC for android. • copy or move a file from one ftp server to another

  I have a java application, which copies or moves a bunch of giga files from one ftp server to another. Currently it copies a file from the first fpt server to the local computer (where it runs) using ftp get and then copies it to the second ftp server using ftp put. I use net library from apache. Is it possible to copy it directly from one ftp server to another bypassing the local computer? One idea is to create a java telnet session and and send a couple of ftp commands. Will it work? Any other suggestions?
