• Question about layout in java.

  I have two panels main_panel and child_panel. I have set layout for main_panel by using "main_panel.setLayout(flowlayout)" and added child_panel in main_panel by using "main_panel.add(child_panel)". This child_panel gets added to main_panel but its position is at the cross-section of horizontal midpoint and top vertical section of screen. But I want child_panel to be at the top left corner, something I could have done by using "child_panel.setlocation(a,b)" method, if I have set the Layout of main_panel as NULL. I have used flowlayout here because I want components in the JPanel to keep adjusting with the size of JFrame. So question is, can I add child_panel to main_panel at the exact location I want, even if I set the Layout of main_panel as not NULL.

• Is there a distributed VCS that can manage large files?

  Is there a distributed version control system (git, bazaar, mercurial, darcs etc.) that can handle files larger than available RAM? I need to be able to commit large binary files (i.e. datasets, source video/images, archives), but I don't need to be able to diff them, just be able to commit and then update when the file changes. I last looked at this about a year ago, and none of the obvious candidates allowed this, since they're all designed to diff in memory for speed. That left me with a VCS for managing code and something else ("asset management" software or just rsync and scripts) for large files, which is pretty ugly when the directory structures of the two overlap.

• Adding an ActionScript eventListener that takes the whole sprite

  Hello, I have a very simple constructor in ActionScript as the following: public function ButtonTest() { this.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, browseFiles); } My problem is that when I open the SWF file itself, the window is not full size and the whole area responds to the mouse click. If I expand the window to full size, a margin of like 200 pixels on the left is not clickable. I hope I make some sense. The issue is that I had the .SWF file in a in my HTML code, and when I make it small, it seems that only the center of the SWF file is clickable. I hope someone can please help me. Thank you, Rudy

• Java and gstreamer-java initialisation error

  I am building a small app which will play streaming audio from the internet in java (mainly internet radio stations). I have decided to use the gstreamer-java library for the sound, which uses JNA. I would like to include a check in the code, to see whether the gstreamer library has been initialised. When I have left the "Gst.init()" code out (to mimic when the library has not been initialised correctly), the application throws out the following messages: (process:21888): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.22.3/gobject/gtype.c:2458: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:21888): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed The app calls the gstreamer-java library. The error messages appear but the thread continues to run, hogging the CPU. Is there any way to catch the error or to add a check to prevent it from happening? An alternative would be to put the "Gst.init()" in the main class, but I am not sure if this would always guarantee the gstreamer library is initialised.

• Yes, I did it - Skydiving in Mauritius

  Finally, I did it or better said we did it. Already back in November last year I saw the big billboard advertisement of Skydive Austral Mauritius near Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis and decided for myself that this is going to be the perfect birthday gift for my wife. Simply out of curiosity I would join her tandem jump with a second instructor. Due to her pregnancy of our son I had to be patient... But then finally, her birthday had arrived and on our midnight celebration session I showed her her netbook with the website preloaded. Actually, it was the "perfect" timing... Recovery from her cesarean is fine, local weather conditions are gorgious and the children were under surveillance of my mum - spending her annual holidays on the island. So, after late wake-up in the morning, we packed our stuff and off we went. According to Google Maps direction indication we had to drive for roughly 50km (only) but traffic here in Mauritius is always challenging. The dropzone is at the Zone Industrielle Mon Loisir Sugar Estate near Riviere du Rempart at the northern east coast. Anyways, we were not in a hurry and arrived there shortly after noon. The access road to the airfield are just small down-driven paths through sugar cane fields and according to our daughter "it's bumpy!". True true true... The facilities at Skydive Austral Mauritius are complete except for food. Enough space for parking, easy handling at the reception and a lot to see for the kids. There's even a big terrace with several sets of tables and chairs, small bar for soft drinks, strictly non-alcoholic. The team over there is all welcoming and warm-hearthy! Having the kids with us was no issue at all. Quite the opposite, our daugther was allowed to discover a lot of things than we adults did. Even visiting the small air plane was on the menu for her. Really great stuff! While waiting for our turn we enjoyed watching other people getting ready in the jump gear, taking off with the Cessna, and finally coming back down on the tandem parachute. Actually, the different expressions on their faces was one of the best parts while waiting. Great mental preparation as my wife was getting more anxious about her first jump... {loadposition content_adsense} First, we got some information about the procedures on the plane about how to get seated, tight up with our instructors and how to get ready for the jump off the plane as soon as we arrive the height of 10.000 ft. All well explained and easy to understand after all.Next, we met with our jumpers Chris and Lee aka "Rasta" to get dressed and ready for take-off. Those guys are really cool and relaxed for their job. From that point on, the DVD session / recording for my wife's birthday started and we really had a lot of fun... The difference between that small Cessna and a commercial flight with an Airbus or a Boeing is astronomic! The climb up to 10.000 ft took us roughly 25 minutes and we enjoyed the magnificent view over the turquoise lagunes near Poste de Flacq, Lafayette and Isle d'Ambre on the north-east coast. After flying through the clouds we sun-bathed and looked over "iced-sugar covered" Mauritius. You might have a look at the picture gallery of Skydive Mauritius for better imagination. The moment of truth, or better said, point of no return came after approximately 25 minutes. The door opens, moving into position on the side on top of the wheel and... out! Back flip and free fall! Slight turns and Wooooohooooo! through the clouds... It so amazing and breath-taking! So undescribable! You have to experience this yourself! Some seconds later the parachute opened and we glided smoothly with some turns and spins back down to the dropzone. The rest of the family could hear and see us soon and the landing was easy going. We never had any doubts or fear about our instructors. They did a great job and we are looking forward to book our next job. • jQuery photo carousel (that looks like a real carousel)?

  I am on the lookout for a jQuery photo carousel that can display 3 images at a time, and circle through x amount of photos (and when reaching the last, starting with the first photo again). I made a quick mock-up of what i am looking fore - see it here. So there is 3 photos vissible, the middle one beeing the 'main' one and a bit bigger than the previous and next (left and right). Upon clicking the next/previous arrows the next or previous photo slides into the middle and thereby becomes the main photo. Any ideas to where i can find such a jQuery plugin/script?

• Unit of measurement API in Java?

  JSR-275 has been rejected, the Units of Measurement API for Java project is a set of interfaces, but haven't found an open source implementation. On this post: Which jsr-275 units implementation should be used? the project owner mentions the implementation was going to be ready by the end of last year on JScience, but didn't find anything there to convert between weight or length units and when I looked for JScience on https://maven.java.net/, I found it, but the JAR wasn't even in the directory https://maven.java.net/content/repositories/snapshots/org/jscience/jscience/5.0-SNAPSHOT/, so I had to get it from somewhere else. Has this project been left behind? And is there currently an implementation for conversion of Units of measurement in Java and even perhaps a Maven repo?

• Speech.Recognition GrammarBuilder/Choices Tree Structure

  In playing around with C#'s Speech Recognition, I've stumbled across a road block in the creation of an effective GrammerBuilder with Choices (more specifically, Choices of Choices). IE considering the following logical commands. One solution would to "hard code" every combination of Speech lines and add them to a GrammarBuilder (ie "SET LEFT COLOR RED" and "SET RIGHT CLEAR", however, this would quickly max out the limit of 1024, especially when dealing with number combinations. Another solution would to Append all 'columns' as "Choices" (and filter out incorrect paths upon 'recognition', however this seems like it's processor heavy and unnecessary. The middle ground, seems like the best path - with Choices of Choices - like a tree structure on a GrammarBuilder - however I'm not sure how to proceed. Any suggestions?

• Can managed and unmanaged C++/MFC be mixed in one dll?

  Previously we had software in MFC (VC6), VB6 and C# applications that needed to call the same engine written in C++ (and MFC). The engine required C++ for speed. At the time we decided to use COM as the interface because all three could use it with the least issues in marshalling, etc. Our MFC application is now deprecated and we have recently decided to dump VB6, so what we've got left is C#. We can just leave the COM engine as-is, but it would be nice to get away from COM registration, etc., and have a managed interface to work with. COM registration occasionally causes support issues if there is something wrong with the person's machine. Is it possible to have a dll with the existing unmanaged C++/MFC, and a .NET front end interface?

Some were closed as "not programming related" or were downvoted, others were answered and got upvoted. It seems that many developers think SEO was something "dirty" or belonged in the realm of spam. IMHO designing for search engines and practising SEO techniques adds important value to the final product like, for example, a good user interface. Should SEO really be left to specialized non-programmers? Shouldn't web developers have profound SEO knowledge? Or is it okay to apply SEO as a post-development process?

  Hi, I am producing some latex beamer slides (but I think it is not a beamer specific question per se). I have the following: \begin{itemize} \item Issue1 \item Issue2 \item Issue3 \end{itemize} Now, I want to have a right curly brace (i.e. '}') behind the items spreading over issue1 and issue2. And of course I want to write something behind that curly brace. In a perfect world I would write something like: \begin{itemize} \left . \item Issue1 \item Issue2 \right \} One and Two are cool \item Issue3 \end{itemize} This does not work because I am not in a math environment and I can not put the whole snippet inside a math environment because itemize would not work in that case.   How can I set a ringtone for an individual contact on Android ? I have found a way to set the default ringtone that applies to all contacts without an individual ringtone. But that is not what i'm trying to accomplish. I want the application to have a button "Apply ringtone to contact". When i click, I start an activityForResult displaying a list of all contacts on the phone. When a contact is selected, the contact activity closes and returns with a uri to the contact. Now all the app needs to do is to apply the selected ringtone to that spesific contact. The code for displaying and selecting contacts by an activity is already implemented and seems to work on with the app. Its only the last part left, and I have no clue about how to solve this. Any help would be usefull.

• Canvas element covering the entire screen?

  I'm trying to use <canvas> in iPhone Safari, and if I place the element in the body, there are unused pixels to the left and top of the element. I tried specifying margin:0;padding:0 with CSS to no avail. I'm adding numbers to ArrayList like 156, 340 (when it is TransferIn or Buy) etc and then i remove them doing it like 156, 340 (when it's TransferOut, Sell). My solution works for that without a problem. The problem I have is that for some old data employees were entering sum's like 1500 instead of 500+400+100+500. How would I change it so that when there's Sell/TransferOut or Buy/Transfer In and there's no match inside ArrayList it should try to add multiple items from thatArrayList and find elements that combine into aggregate. When the user enters a space into the string, the next input is automatically filled out with the remaining letters, or sometimes left blank. As the next input string is often an integer, this will result in an unpleasant bug. What's a good fix for this?

• How to Use 3 Monitors

  Right now my setup has a nice big 24" flatscreen in the center, and a 19" flatscreen to the left. And a big gaping hole on the right. I have a 3rd monitor to put there, but I'm not sure how to get the computer to recognize it. Do I need a graphics card with 3 ports? Or can I span the monitors over non SLI-Linked graphics cards? Is it possible to plug my 3rd monitor into the on-board VGA port and have it work?

  When I open the help (.chm) application, I could see table of contents. By default, the first entry in the file is selected, however I couldn't see the corresponding page data. Instead, I see "This program cannot display the web page" (the default error message that comes in IE7).The page is displayed only when I click on any of the contents on the left side. Is there a way of showing the page by default without clicking on the entry? The following code is the .hhp file. • Strange Google Maps v3 geocode behavior when a quote is in the address

  See my test page. When on the page, click the top left button "Geocode". If you are in Firefox, geocoder.geocode() will have it's status equal to ERROR (and pop an alert after a few seconds). In Internet Explorer (at least 7), everything is fine and the marker is added to the map. If you remove the quote from the address (l'Assomption -- lAssomption), everything execute fine in Firefox. Now with my question: how a quote can "crash" the Google Maps V3 API only in Firefox!?

  I'm looking to write a Truth Table Generator as a personal project. There are several web-based online ones here and here. (Example screenshot of an existing Truth Table Generator) I have the following questions: How should I go about parsing expressions like: ((P = Q) & (Q = R)) = (P = R) Should I use a parser generator like ANTLr or YACC, or use straight regular expressions? Once I have the expression parsed, how should I go about generating the truth table? Each section of the expression needs to be divided up into its smallest components and re-built from the left side of the table to the right. How would I evaluate something like that? Can anyone provide me with tips concerning the parsing of these arbitrary expressions and eventually evaluating the parsed expression?

• Why would a FaceBook application "work" on a profile, but not a page?

  I made a FaceBook application that works fine on profiles, but I can't figure out how to get it to show on a FaceBook page. For example, after I visit the application canvas URL, allow the application, then edit application settings and "add" to box and tab view... I cannot click the "plus" symbol to the left of the tabs in order to add a tab for the application. It does not appear in the list of available applications. Meanwhile, the application is working/showing up on profiles with no issues. I DID check the "Installable to Pages" checkbox on the application (authentication tab) settings. What could cause this? • IE6 HTML control wrapping

  Is there any way to prevent wrapping across controls in IE6? For example, I have a label and a single select box. The select box width is dynamic (depending on the content). I want the label to always be to the left of the select box. Right now the problem I am having is the select box drops below the label. I have tried using the <nobr> tag as well as CSS word-wrap rules, but because this isn't text the wrapping rules do not apply. The only way I have found for sure to make it work is to place them in a two-column table, but I do not like this solution. Is there any other way?

• bgiframe appears in front of jquery modal dialog's overlay in IE6

  When I look at jquery ui's demo modal dialog (http://jqueryui.com/demos/dialog/#modal) in IE6 the bgiframe is appearing on top of the background overlay. So instead of seeing a black/gray stripe pattern, there is just a white background covering the page with the word "false" in the upper left corner. Is bgiframe broken with the latest version of jqueryui? Is there a quick way to repair this problem with bgiframe? If not, is there a plugin that hides selects when a modal dialog is shown? The ie6 z-index issue with selects is the reason I was using bgiframe in the first place.

When I start looking at queries which our ERP sending to database I see a lot of totally needlessly subselect queries inside main queries. As I am not member of developers which is creator of program we using, they do not like much when I criticize they code and job. Let say they do not taking my review as serious statements. So I asking you few questions about subselect in SQL Does subselect is taking a lot of more time then left outer joins? Does exists any blog, article or anything where I subselect is recommended not to use ? How I can prove that if we avoid subselesct in query that query is going to be faster ? Our database server is MSSQL2005
