• What resources are best for staying current about information security?

  What types of sites do you visit, on a regular basis, to stay current on information security issues? Some examples from my list include: http://isc.sans.org/ http://www.kaspersky.com/viruswatch3 http://www.schneier.com/blog/ http://blog.fireeye.com/research/ As well as following the security heavyweights on twitter. I'm curious to hear what resources you recommend for daily monitoring. Anything specific to particular operating systems or other software. Are mailing lists still considered valuable. My goal would be to trim the cruft of all the things I'm currently subscribed to and focus on the essentials.

• Laptop and 2 screens: use screens but not monitor display

  Hi, I have 1 VGA socket on my laptop, and currently have that in use by a large screen. At some point in the future I would like to get another one of these screens and use both screens in dual screen mode but not use my laptop display (to be honest my laptop display is pretty rubbish as its like 2/3s the size of my screen - even if I had the choice to use all 3 I probably wouldn't want to). Is it possible to achieve this? If so, what do I need by way of hardware / software, and how much do you reckon it should cost me? Thanks in advance. Regards, Richard

• Intelligence as a vector quantity

  I am reading this wonderful book called "Coders at Work: Reflections on the Craft of Programming" by Peter Seibel and I am at part wherein the conversation is with Joshua Bloch and I found this answer which is an important point for a programmer. The paragraph, goes something like this. There's this problem, which is, programming is so much of an intellectual meritocracy and often these people are the smartest people in the organization; therefore they figure they should be allowed to make all the decisions. But merely the fact they are the smartest people in the organization does not mean that they should be making all the decisions, because intelligence is not a scalar quantity; it's a vector quantity. Here at the last sentence, I fail to get the insight which is he trying to share. Can someone explain it in a little further as what he means by a vector quantity, possibly trying to present the same insight. Further down, I get the point that he is not taking about having an organization where non-technical people (sometimes clueless) can be managers of the technical people for some reason that they can spend more time to write emails well, because the very next statement following the above paragraph was. And if you lack empathy or emotional intelligence, then you shouldn't be designing APIs or GUIs or languages. I understand that he is saying that in Software engineering, programmers should know how the users will see their product and design for them. I felt the above paragraph was very interesting.

• VLC package dependencies broken & cannot be resolved

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 32bit. Today, suddenly some updates had arrived but it wasn't normal update. It said me to partial update. When I have done this, update manager want to remove vlc. I did it. But when I want to install vlc from synaptic package manager, I found broken dependencies there. • Monitoring IIS with SNMP

  Hello, I'm trying to monitor IIS using the Windows integrated SNMP service (for versions 2000, 2003 ans 2008 of Windows Server, but i'm doing my experiments on a 2008 R2 box). So far I was able to install the SNMP service, and query mib-2 values without problems. Now, I'm having trouble to monitor IIS informations, as the SNMP service does not seem to know about the .iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises.microsoft.software.internetServer OIDs. Walking the entire SNMP tree only gets the mib-2 stuff as well as the names of some services, but that's it. I did't find anything interesting in the service configuration panel. So how do I configure this service to get IIS information, or other WMI data for that matter (I installed the SNMP WMI Provider) ? I can't find any documentation about that !

• Leadership does not see value in standard process for machine configuration and new developer orientation

  About 3 months ago our lead web developer and designer(same person) left the company, greener pastures was the reason for leaving. Good for them I say. My problem is that his department was completely undocumented. Things have been tough since the lead left, there is a lot of knowledge both theoretical knowledge we use to quote new projects and technical/implementation knowledge of our existing products that we have lost as a result of his departure. My normal role is as a product manager (for our products themselves) and as a business analyst for some of our project based consulting work. I've taught myself to code over the past year and in an effort to continue moving forward I've taken on the task of setting my laptop up as a development machine with hopes of implementing some of the easier feature requests and fixing some of the no brainer bugs that get submitted into our ticketing system. But, no one knows how to take a fresh Windows machine and configure it to work seamlessly with our production apps. I have requested my boss, who is still in contact with the developer who left, ask them to document and create a process to onboard a new developer, software installation, required packages, process to deploy to the productions application servers, etc. None of this exists, and I'm spinning my wheels trying to get my computer working as a functional development machine. But she does not seem to understand the need for such a process to exist. Apparently the new developer who replaced the one who left has been using a machine that was pre-configured for our environment, so even the new developer could not set up a new machine if we added another developer. My question is two part: Am I wrong in assuming a process to on-board and configure a new computer to be part of our development eco-system should exist? Am I being a whinny baby and should I figure the process out and create a document on my own?

• Why does TeamViewer launch a web server?

  Hello I just read this article which I find concerning: "After 90 minutes of troubleshooting, Nash traced the problem to TeamViewer, which he used to remotely administer the client's servers. It turns out the program had opened up its own webserver on the client's machine as soon as Apache went down and in the process made it impossible for the client, a large provider of business software, to restart its proper website." http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/24/teamviewer_snafu/ I started using TeamViewer recently because it's just much better than UltraVNC (runs on both XP and Vista, the server dials out instead of requiring the user to open a port on their router + better performance than UVNC)... but I thought that TeamViewer had both the server and client connect out to TV's web server for data to flow between the two hosts. Why does TV even need to open a web server on the server host? Thank you.

• Java 6.0 Virtual Machine re-caches application on every load

  I have a Java application which is loaded and cached by the JRE and for most users it only needs to cache once unless the application software has changed. However, I have one computer that caches the entire application every time they load it. It is not the version of the JRE, I have that running on other machines. It also works on this machine if logged in as a local admin, just not as a standard user. Does anybody have any ideas on what might be causing this?

• Who moved this PC here aka Locate which port on switch a PC is plugged into

  The catch is you have no SNMP access, not even public. The end vision is locate a PC in building easily even if PC's are moved around. The MAC address of the PC is known and the software would run as client on each desktop, reporting back which port the PC was plugged into. Well from a programmer perspective, my network skills are not the best. Yes I could use SNMP, download the MAC port table, load it into SQL, match it to the PC name. Seems alot of work. Lets say I ping a single point from the PC. Would the echo have some thing unique for each device on the same switch? All I need to identify some thing unique for each PC plugged into each port. If the PC was moved from location A to a different location then the unique response would change.

  How to create a customized version of an xp installation cd. I want a hand's off installation that will install all the themes, drivers , and applications I need without my intervention. How can I do that. I tried to make use of this software called Nlite. But when I tested the iso file using virtual box. The virtual box said that there's a certain file that cannot be copied. And by the way, before I customized the original iso image of windows xp sp3, it doesn't have the file copying problem that I mentioned above.

• Group Policy processing and autologon on Windows 7

  I'm trying to accomplish a few things via Group Policy on Windows 7. Software Installation, map drives, map printer, etc. I've got these computers set to autologon. The problem I'm running into is that the computers logon before DHCP has done its thing. Therefore, they don't apply any group policies properly. How do I fix this? I've already set a policy to "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon". I've read up a bit and this doesn't actually mean that it waits for DHCP. So it's a little pointless. Anything that would delay logon would work. Or if I can somehow make the computer wait for DHCP.

• Ubuntu 13.10 AMD/ATI proprietary driver slow boot time, black screen after logging in and lengthy login/logout delays

  Ubuntu 13.10 is causing me major headaches with my AMD/ATI HD 5770 GPU. Below is a list of problems I am currently encountering. 1) The boot time is extended by at least 25s after installing catalyst 13.4. Using open source radeon drivers, my boot time till the login screen is ~10s. With catalyst 13.4 installed, the boot time increases to ~35s. This was not the case in Ubuntu 13.04, 12.10 or 12.04. I have done the driver installation manually (instructions from wiki.cchtml.com) and using software center and there is no difference. I have not tried the catalyst 13.8 beta driver. 2) After manual installation of catalyst 13.4, I get stuck at a black screen after logging in. I have to purge fglrx to resolve the problem. I tried sudo amdconfig --initial -f but it didn't help. 3) The delay between logging in and unity being displayed is ~10-15s for BOTH open source and proprietary drivers. During the delay, it's just a black screen. Whenever I logout, there is again a ~10-15s delay with the login screen appearing stuck before lightdm allows me to enter my password again. This is ridiculous! Yes, I could stick with open source radeon drivers but I would like to install Steam and play my Valve collection on the machine. Is anybody else encountering similar issues?

  Java 7 update 45 (October 2013) changed the interactions between JavaScript and Java Applets made through LiveConnect. The 7u45 update is a critical patch update that has also raised the security baseline and users are strongly recommended to upgrade. Versions below the security baseline used to apply the Trusted-Library Manifest attribute to call between sandboxed code and higher-privileged code. The Trusted-Library value was a Boolean true or false. Security changes for the current security baseline (7u45) introduced a different Caller-Allowable-Codebase that indicates precisely where these LiveConnect calls can originate. For example, LiveConnect calls should not necessarily originate from 3rd party components of a web page or other DOM-based browser manipulations (pdf). This provides necessary protections (without warnings) for all users at or above the security baseline. Client installations automatically detect updates to the secure baseline and prompt users to upgrade. We are aware of the issue that modifying the Manifest to use the newer Caller-Allowable-Codebase causes warnings for users below the security baseline and that not doing it displays a warning for users above. Too many networking applications (VPN, Virtual computers) are installed on your machine and they are preventing NL3 from proper installation.   Our Microsoft volume licensing site was recently updated to include our Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 KMS keys. We have an existing KMS server running on Server 2008 (not R2). In an attempt to be proactive about supporting the new OSes in our environment, I unregistered the old KMS key with slmgr.vbs and tried registering the new key. The registration failed with Error 0xC004F050. The description for that error was "The Software Licensing Service reported that the product key is invalid." What's wrong? I've checked and double checked that for typos against what is listed on the Volume Licensing website.

• Is 12.10 ready from prime time?

  I recently installed 12.10 - dual boot using Wubi. I had numerous stability problems: many sporadic, unaccounted for system errors, software that was installed and then seemed to disappear from App Launcher, etc. Machine is new HP quad with 4 gig memory - wonderful piece of hardware - definitely no hardware problems there. I went back to 12.04 (installed from ISO image, not Wubi) and it's rock solid - never any issues at all. Is 12.10 not ready for prime time? Are there fixes-updates in the pipe? Should I get a DVD disc and install 12.10 from ISO instead of Wubi? New to Linux/Ubuntu after 20 years on MS/Windows and loving it - I develop in C++ and Python - maybe will try Lazarus since I know Delphi. Would like to use the latest and greatest Ubuntu but I will not sacrifice stabilty. Are there known problems with 12.10? Would using the standard install instead of Wubi help? Seems a lot of users are voting down this question - not sure why since other users have confirmed problems.

• How do I transition from WUBI to a native installation?

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid installed through wubi on my laptop (it came with Windows 7 preinstalled). This was my first foray into Linux, and I'm here to stay. I have no use for Windows, and yet I must manually choose not to boot into it! Should I shrink the Windows partition to something negligible and grow the Linux one using something like gparted or fdisk, and just be content that everything runs? In that case, I need to understand the filesystems. Which is which?   I know this is considered a bad question since there is no correct answer, but I need to decide on a database for embedded linux (DaVinci 368 based) hardware and I've never had to produce a design with a database before. Each record will probably contain less than 1000 images with associated alpha-numeric data and the mass storage will be some kind of flash drive. Only one user needs access to the data at a time. MySQL claims to be "The world's most popular open source database" but SQLite claims to be "the most widely deployed SQL database engine in the world." Perhaps there is another that is also the best in the world? Which is easiest to use for a database newbie? Should I just flip a coin? Does it really matter which one I pick? Do I even need to use a database software package or should I roll my own? I won't need bells and whistles like sorting, but I'll probably need to delete the oldest records to make room for new ones if the storage fills up.
