  My team and I are meeting tonight to come up with a business plan and some community input would be amazing. I've been mulling over this issue for the past few months and bouncing ideas off of others, and now I'd finally like some input from the community. I have come up with a fair selection of ideas, but most of those amount to either fun projects which could potentially be profitable, or otherwise solid business models that have one or two major hurdles (usually related to resources or legality). For our team meeting tonight, my idea is to take inventory of our available skills, resources, and compelling problems which interest us. The last is where I would greatly appreciate some community input. Hell, even entire business ideas/plans would be appreciated. No matter how big or small your thoughts, any input would be appreciated. We're a team of computer scientists, so our business will be primarily based around software/technology/Web solutions. Among my relevant available resources (entire Internet aside), I have the following: A pretty reliable connection to an SEO company a large production company. A stash of fairly powerful server hardware. A fast network with static IPs. The backend for Hackswipe, which includes credit card payment processing and a Google Voice-based SMS gateway. This work in progress design for something completely unrelated but which is backed by some fairly decent infrastructure. Direct access to the experts in just about any relevant field (on-campus Carnegie Mellon professors). A sexual relationship with the baron of a small nation. For further down the line, some investor relationships. Not likely to be so relevant, but a decent social media presence (Stack Overflow reputation, modship in some major reddits, various tech forums). The source code for Eugene fucking McCabe. Pooled with the other team members, the list of projects we can build off of would be longer (including an Android app). So, what are your thoughts? Crossposted to reddit

• Playing Age of Empires II multiplayer in VirtualBox Over wi fi network

  I installed Age of Empires II (Expansion) in VirtualBox (hosting Windows XP). It works great in single player mode. Unfortunately, I tried playing multiplayer via WI-FI which I created on my Ubuntu machine and can't seem to join games. But when I connected to my WI-FI router other able to connect to my system and we can play multiplayer mode This is what I've done so far to try to resolve the issue: I noticed that the IP address of my virtual machine was 10.0.x.x, While the local IP on Ubuntu is 192.168.x.x, which I figured was a Problem. So I changed from NAT networking to bridged networking in VirtualBox . I turned off the Windows firewall in the virtual machine and don't have any ports blocked by Ubuntu, so no software firewall should be at fault. However I'm still unable to play multiplayer games, and suspect that some kind of networking issue lies at the heart of the problem. I'm not sure what else I would need to change, however. So essentially I was wondering if anyone else here has managed to play AOE2, or any similar game, inside VirtualBox from Ubuntu, and if so what you needed to do to make it possible. Or if anyone has suggestions on where else to look to figure out the problem, I'd appreciate that as well. Unfortunately AOE2 itself doesn't provide any debugging information to troubleshoot the inability to connect to network games. • Ideas for home media server with Dell laptop?

  Hi guys, We have an old Dell Inspiron laptop we don't use anymore and would look to turn it onto a media/backup server for music/pictures - and maybe documents/code. The laptop only has 40Gb of HD space but we can hook to it a USB external HD with an additional 80Gb. This is a very general question: - What OS should I put on it (more like, what flavor of Linux)? - What media/backup server software should I install on top of that? - How would you go about backing up to it? I need to back up computers on the same LAN, some have Windows, some OS X, some Linux. If you could point me to an all-in-one solution with a nice tutorial for non-sysadmin folks it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

• SSH as root using public key still prompts for password on RHEL 6.1

  I've generated rsa keys with cygwin ssh-keygen and copied them to the server with ssh-copy-id -i id_rsa.pub [email protected] I've got the following settings in my /etc/ssh/sshd_config file RSAAuthentication yes PubkeyAuthentication yes AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys PermitRootLogin yes When I ssh [email protected] it still prompts for a password. The output below from /usr/sbin/sshd -d says that a matching keys was found in the .ssh/authorized_keys file, but it still requires a password from the client. I've read a bunch of web postings about permissions on files and directories, but nothing works. Is it possible to ssh with keys in RHEL 6.1 or is this forbidden? • What happens to a PDF file when you save it as a static PDF file?

  Does anyone know what happens to a PDF file when you save it as a static PDF file? I have a 17K PDF file that doesn’t work will with my software. But when I save it as a Static PDF using Adobe Live Cycle, the file works just fine. But it’s significantly larger (327K). Because these file will be download over the web, I really want to keep the size down. I have hundreds of files like this. If I knew what happens to the file when it’s converted I might be in better shape. Thanks

• Oracle SPARC SuperCluster and US DoD Security guidelines

  I've worked in the past to help our government customers understand how best to secure Solaris.  For my customer base that means complying with Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).  I recently worked with a team to apply both the Solaris and Oracle 11gR2 database STIGs to a SPARC SuperCluster.  The results have been published in an Oracle White paper. The SPARC SuperCluster is a highly available, high performance platform that incorporates: SPARC T4-4 servers Exadata Storage Servers and software ZFS Storage appliance InfiniBand interconnect Flash Cache  Oracle Solaris 11 Oracle VM for SPARC Oracle Database 11gR2 It is targeted towards large, mission critical database, middleware and general purpose workloads.  Using the Oracle Solution Center we configured a SSC applied DoD security guidance and confirmed functionality and performance of the system.  The white paper reviews our findings and includes a number of security recommendations.  In addition, customers can contact me for the itemized spreadsheets with our detailed STIG reports. Some notes: There is no DISA STIG  documentation for Solaris 11.  Oracle is working to help DISA create one using their new process. As a result, our report follows the Solaris 10 STIG document and applies it to Solaris 11 where applicable. In my conversations over the years with DISA Field Security Office they have repeatedly told me, "The absence of a DISA written STIG should not prevent a product from being used.  Customer may apply vendor or industry security recommendations to receive accreditation."   Novice question here, but how can I watch TV on my PC without using online sites? I have heard of tv tuners but is it just a matter of hooking a tv tuner to your computer and that's it? Do I have to just buy a tuner or pay for a service as well? If no service needs to be paid for, will I get just regular channels or cable/satellite channels as well? Will my PC need to be connected to the Internet when I want to watch TV? Do I need any type of software aside from the hardware tuner?

• How do we keep Active Directory resilient across multiple sites?

  I handle much of the IT for a company of around 100 people, spread across about five sites worldwide. We're using Active Directory for authentication, mostly served to Linux (CentOS 5) systems via LDAP. We've been suffering through a spate of events where the IP tunnel between the two major sites goes down and the secondary domain controller at one site can't contact the primary domain controller at the other. It seems that the secondary domain controller starts denying user authentication within minutes of losing connectivity to the primary. How do we make the secondary domain controller more resilient to downtime? Is there a way for it to cache the entire directory and/or at least keep enough information locally to survive a multi-hour disconnection? (We're all in a single organizational unit if that makes any difference.) (The servers here are Windows Server 2003; don't assume that we set this up correctly. I'm a software engineer, not an IT specialist.)

• IE8 on Win7 - file download results in "C:\ location not accessible."

  Ok, an odd problem. For one user on a Win7 x64 system, attempting to download a file with Internet Explorer 8 results in a error "C:\ location not accessible. Access is denied." even though the target location is not on the C:\ drive. No other users have the problem and no other browsers do. The user does not remember deleting any folders recently, and it looks liek no new software has been installed. A checkdisk comes up clean. Any ideas? Ken

• Just Another Web Service (JAWS) vs SOA

  Over the last few years SOA has been a hot topic lending it to be abused by many that have no understanding of the concept. In my opinion, one of the largest issues facing SOA is the lack of understanding and experience implementing SOA by business and IT alike. I just recently deployed a new web services that is called by multiple service clients. Would you call this SOA because it is a web service that can be called by any requesting client? In my opinion, this is not SOA; instead it is Just Another Web Service (JAWS).  Just because a company creates a web service does not mean that they are using SOA, in fact it only means that they are using a web service. SOA is an architectural style that focuses on the design of systems based on the consumer and providers thorough the use of contracts.  With this approach SOA needs to be applied for the top down in order for it to reach its full potential. In the case of the web service, the service is just a small part of the entire system that is reusable and has the flexibility to change. In order for a company in this case to move towards SOA then they need to define business processes that can be shared through the use of reusable software and loose coupling. Once the company’s thought and development process change to address changes in this manner they can start to become more SOA.

• Installation hangs at "Retrieving file 43 of 105" Virtualbox OS X 10.7 Host Ubuntu 12.04 x86 guest

  This is my second attempt at installing Ubuntu. In my first attempt, I selected "download updates" and "install third-party components"; in my second attempt, I deselected both. Still experiencing the same problem. In my first attempt at installing Ubuntu, after the installation stuck at "Retrieving file 43 of 105", I selected "skip" and the installation completed. After I started to run the OS, I received a notification that language support was incomplete. When I tried to update it, the Ubuntu Software Centre updating process hung on "waiting for jockey-backend to exit", seemingly indefinitely. At that point, I decided to reinstall the system (since the whole process is only supposed to take 45 minutes or less), but, as I mentioned above my results were the same. I'm new to Ubuntu. Any advice? Where are the files (including file 43) being retrieved from? Online or from the ubuntu installation iso? I have searched many forums for an answer to this problem, and have seen others with the same issue but I haven't found a solution. Thanks.

One of my friend told me that distributed computing is way faster than parallel computing, which is very true after reading a bit on the internet. However, I have never clustered before. Current workstation I own: Dell Precision T5400 2 x Intel Xeon 2.5 GHz 16 GB RAM (2GB x 8) 1 x Western Digital 1TB HDD 7200 rpm 1 x nVidia Quadro FX4600 768MB GPU 1 x 870W PSU OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit 2nd WS: I can buy another WS similar configuration to the one I own I am not bothered about OS, I am willing to cluster with either Windows or Linux. However, my software are compatible with windows 64-bit only. Please help me setup a cluster. Thank you.

  I have the following: MAC PRO (Model Number: A1186) (PCIe - SLOTS) At present I am using the software RAID however I wish to move to the hardware raid because of the following: Performance (4 x 300gb SATA II in RAID 5) Redundancy (Raid 5, 1 drive can fail and system will be online) I do not wish to use the Apple RAID card (very expensive), I would like to use an aftermarket one which is cheaper. • Vista Remote Desktop Mouse Drag Not Working

  I've been using Remote Desktop to connect from a Windows Vista machine to a Windows XP machine. Everything used to work fine, but a few weeks ago I found that I could not drag things with my mouse. I can click on things just fine, but I cannot move or resize windows or select text with the mouse. I did some experimenting, and it seems that the remote machine behaves as though it gets a mouse up event shortly after it gets the mouse down event, even though I am still holding the button down. On both machines, things work fine outside of Remote Desktop. I did reinstall the OS and software on my Windows Vista machine a couple of months ago, and that might have been about the same time that this problem appeared. I don't frequently use Remote Desktop, so I can't be sure. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  A simple Google search for "Time Machine for Windows" results in a flurry of different little apps. But instead of relying on forum anecdotes and advertisements, I call on the much wiser Super User beta community for some depth on this one. Having Time Machine running on Leopard is like a warm, fuzzy blanket of comfort that I never got with RAID, rsync, or SyncToy on Windows. I'm not asking the community what the "best" backup software for Windows is, but instead: Is there any true Time Machine clone for Windows, one that includes as many of the following as possible: Completely transparent, "set-it-and-forget-it" backup Incremental backups (changes only) for every hour for a day, every day for a month, and every week until the backup disk is full Ability to rebuild from this backup disk in case of main drive meltdown (the backup doesn't have to be bootable; neither are Time Machine disks) Extremely easy to use UI (target user == wife). • "Failed to create swap space" error during installation

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu for the past two days or so, but I've been running into a problem: every time I run the installation program on the LiveCD, I always get the same (or a very similar) error: "Failed to create Swap space The creation of swap space in partition #3 of SCSI5 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." So far, I've run DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) on my HDD once, to make absolutely sure that everything on it had been erased. Then, I simply put in the LiveCD, and let it run the automated install. I get the above error directly after I tell it to automatically partition the HDD (it will work for a second or so, then this will pop up), forcing me back to the screen that lets me choose whether I want to automatically or manually partition the HDD. Well, after failing to install the software manually, I did a little research and learned enough about partitioning Linux to use the 'Manual partitioning' option. I partitioned the HDD as follows (it's a 1TB drive): /home - (the rest)- ext2, / - 20GB - ext2, /boot - 100MB - ext2, /swap - 8GB /EFIboot - 40MB The only difference when I tried this method was that I got THIS message: "Failed to create Swap space The creation of swap space in partition #2 of SCSI5 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." Basically, the only difference was that there was now a '2' instead of a '3'. If I may ask, what exactly am I doing wrong? I've tried looking around the internet (that's basically all I've done for the last two days), but no one seems to have the same problem that I have, and I've tried most of the solutions for similar problems (DBAN, formatting partitions in ext2 format, etc). The only thing I haven't tried is using the terminal to manually partition the HDD...and I actually DID try to do this, but I wasn't able to get past 'su' 's password demand, so I wasn't able to use the terminal. An enterprising DBA-extraordinaire who was just happening to be presenting at the ODTUG KScope13 conference in New Orleans. He thought it would be a good idea to download the new software over a hotel WIFI, install and create a new multitenant database, watch a few OBEs, and then demo that live for his ‘SQL Developer for DBAs‘ session.
