• Windows 8.1 Ubuntu will not run after restart

  I have been searching the internet forever now, but I am using wubi on a windows 8.1 laptop. I have properly burned the newest version of Ubuntu, I have never done this before, so please put the answer in simple terms. When I open wubi it comes up with these options: -reboot now -manually reboot later I put reboot now, and it reboots with no changes or differences to my operating system. The installer does not pop up upon rebooting and I have no idea what to try. I am a totally newbie at this. Please help me. I am using an Asus computer.

• Why is my LAN not working properly ?

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 as my OS. Till yesterday, my LAN was working fine , but after that my LAN is not working properly. What I mean is that it shows that the LAN wire is connected properly, but when I try to open a website it gets stuck on resolving host. I am using the web browser as Google-chrome. Now, when I manually switch off the wired connection and turn it on again, the LAN works perfectly till I open one or two webpages. After that the same problem repeats again. Can anybody, help me with a solution to this problem.

  This question already has an answer here: How do I install Ubuntu? 4 answers I have partitioned the hard drive and formatted it fat 32 as it is only 16gig. I have just read that I should not partition the hard drive so I have deleted the partition, I noticed that if i re-partition it my options would be NTFS, Fat32 or exfat. I tried to install ubuntu 12.10 but it flashed up something along the lines of the partition is not bootable and it must be for ubuntu to install. I know my copy works as a friend installed it over his copy of windows and it works perfect, I have ubuntu on my flashdrive, I want to run it along side xp.

• Why can't I get into my repositories?

  Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 by mistake and am having problems with some of my programs. They either don't work or they disappear from view on the screen. The Repositories menu item in Synaptic Packages Manager is a case in point. The computer does nothing when I choose this item. I am locked out of unless I edit /etc/apt/sources.list. The rest of the application seems to work, however. Update Manager just flashes on screen then disappears without doing, as does Printing. How do I downgrade from a higher to a lower level repository? I need to downgrade from 10.10 to 10.04. Each time Ubuntu upgrades to 10.10 evil things happen and the operating system really gets messed up. I really do not want to have to erase and install my operating system all over again if I can help it.

• Disadvantages of a fake phpMyAdmin honeypot that causes ip blacklisting and robots.txt disallow/exclusion of the honeypot?

  I'm trying to figure out whether I should set up a honeypot system with a fake phpMyAdmin (site gets hits all the time with people spidering for insecurities with that app). My thought was to create a honeypot php script that would mimic a phpMyAdmin login, and then blacklist ips that hit that url (and aren't already whitelisted). I would then add the appropriate urls to the robots.txt so that spiders that actually respect my robots.txt wouldn't be caught by the blacklist. Are there disadvantages to this approach, do legit robots sometimes not respect robots.txt in certain circumstances, are there any problems with this that I should consider in advance?

  I'm very new to GIT/GitHub (as new as starting yesterday). I would like to know what is the best way to manage multiple people working on the same project with Github. Currently I'm managing one project with four developers. How do I go about the workflow and making sure everything is in sync? (Note: All developers will have one universal account.) Does each developer need to be on a different branch? Will I be able to handle 2 people working on the same file? Please post a detailed answer, I'm not a shy reader. I need to understand this well.

  Hi, an upstart question (I think I have read all relevant man pages but could not find the answer there): What is the sense of using a "stop on ..." stanza in the definition of a job which is a task? The manuals tell us that such a job, after being started, just waits until its script (or exec stanza) is executed completely, and then stops automatically. Given that, what is the point in using "stop on ..." stanzas in such job definitions? For example, this is the job definition for Upstart's (very important) rc job in Natty 11.04 (leaving out comments and empty lines): start on runlevel [0123456] stop on runlevel [!$RUNLEVEL] export RUNLEVEL export PREVLEVEL console output env INIT_VERBOSE task exec /etc/init.d/rc $RUNLEVEL IMHO, the job, after being started by a runlevel event, will be stopped automatically as soon as /etc/init.d/rc $RUNLEVEL has finished. • Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student? [closed]

  I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated. • Battery Power when running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in dual boot

  This is only a general question in order for me to get a better idea of my dual boot (windows 8 & Ubuntu) systems. I noticed that every time I run Ubuntu (which is becoming more often) the battery power gets consumed really fast. I am not performing any special tasks at the moment, just getting to know the system, for example, sound settings, watching videos, surfing the net and so on. When I do the same thing in Windows 8 the battery lives a considerable amount of time longer. Is this something to do with Ubuntu or is it because of the dual boot that I have going on? In other words, if I start running Ubuntu all by itself on my laptop, will it be more power consuming than Windows 8?

• How can I force new windows to open in background & without focus?

  I have Opera set as my default browser but it is the same for Firefox. When opening a link in Liferea, the link opens in an external browser and the browser gets focus. I would like to open the links in background (so that the browser does not get focus). The only solution is to set Focus prevention level to Normal in the Focus & Raise Behaviour tab of General options in CCSM. But this messes things for other things. DO you have any other idea how to prevent new windows to have focus? I am using Unity on 11.10.

• Futures/Monads vs Events

  So, the question is quite simple: in an application framework, when performance impact can be ignored (10-20 events per second at max), what is more maintainable and flexible to use as a preferred medium for communication between modules - Events or Futures/Promices/Monads ? Its often being said, that Events (pub/sub, mediator) allow loose-coupling and thus - more maintainable app... My experience deny this: once you have more that 20+ events - debugging becomes hard, and so is refactoring - because it is very hard to see: who, when and why uses what. Promices (i'm coding in javascript) are much uglier and dumber, than Events. But: you can clearly see connections between function calls, so application logic becomes more straight-forward. What i'm afraid. though, is that Promices will bring more hard-coupling with them... p.s: the answer does not have to be based on JS, experience from other functional languages is much welcome.

• Hosting a magnet link site which could possibly infringe copyrighted material?

  I have for the last 3 months built a crawler, indexer and alot of other things for what started out to be a home project for indexing magnet links on the internet. As my project grew I have thought about releasing my collected data (which at the minute is on a public domain but with no access) to the public. Whatever the crawler sucks in goes in, and whatever the indexer decides to index gets indexed as it is a fully automated process. My question is as follows; Considering that most of the data that is collected from what I have built points to illegal copyrighted material (as most magnet links do) where would it be best to host such a site. I notice all of the already public torrent sites are hosted in India is this because there laws are less strict on copyright infringement? Have any of you hosted such a site, and if so what problems have you ran into? And as always any advice on being a webmaster for this type website?

There are eight balls. One of them is defective. There are three incandescent light bulbs inside a room, but switches are placed outside. These are all he said.   I've got a great idea for an open source project. What should I do before starting, to make sure that I'm not duplicating anyone's efforts? Of course I've googled, but which keywords to use isn't obvious. Is there a site to discuss such ideas? To address a common answer: My goal is not to be the author of a successful project. It is to make sure that this product exists, and can be improved. (There's already a similar commercial venture, which is of low quality and not being developed.) Thus, it won't help me to have the only project that can be found in this niche. If there's a start out there, I'd like to find it and help.

• How to overwrite Ubuntu with Windows 7?

  So I have a Windows DVD and it works. But when it gets to the part when it says "Upgrade" or "Custom" I click on custom and at the bottom it says cannot install over it because Windows 7 can only be installed on an NTFS drive? I know that Ubuntu formatted my partitions into one big on that's an ext4. What can I do? I know that I can maybe create a 30-50 GB partition that's an ntfs then when I go into windows I can format the Ubuntu one and combine them but I don't know how to make a partition much less make a big partition in the "GParted" program? So any ideas would be very helpful. I know how to do anything with a hard drive using the default program that comes with Windows 7 but I feel like a mouse in a maze when I open GParted.

• SSH not working from outside network

  Ok.. First off my ISP does not block ports. I run web server just fine from another machine. I have port forwarded port 22. I can access within network but not out of.. I.E. my android. I get "The Operation Timed Out" on ConnectBot. Oh and I have allowed 22 on UFW. To answer what exactly happened was my ISP blocks port 22, even though a while back they told me they do not block any ports.. I changed it to port 27 and it worked without a problem.

• How do I return a purchase from the Ubuntu Software Centre?

  I purchased Amnesia (game) from the Ubuntu Software Centre. It crashes on startup every time and I therefore want to return it for a refund. I can't find a way of doing so through the USC and, strangely, I can't find any trace of this having been asked before (maybe bad googling on my part). So the question is: how do I return a purchase and get a refund through the USC? EDIT Installing proprietary driver for AMD catalyst fixed Amnesia, but I still think this is an important question because it's basic customer service for any purchase. I'd therefore appreciate any answers anyone can find and I will continue to look too. If I find the answer I'll post it here.

• Backtrack 5 R2 Dual-Boot w/Windows 7 No Longer Loads

  A while back, I installed Backtrack 5 R2 to Dual Boot on a Windows 7 PC. It worked fine for a while, but now when I try to load it, the screen gets all messed up (tried to get a picture with my phone, but it wasn't working too well). The last line before it freezes says: fb: conflicting fb hw usage: nouveaufb vs VESA VGA - removing generic driver Since it last worked, the only changes I can think of are that the computer is now connected via ethernet cable to the router, and I upgraded the graphics card (to nvidia). Because of the last line, I personally would put my money on the latter, but I still have no clue how to fix this. Can someone help me? Thanks!
