• SSD for Visual studio : Intel X25-m G2 or OCZ Vertex

  hi, looking for laptop upgrade, and thinking about SSD drive. Laptop would be Dell Studio XPS with T9400 as i can get one for a very good price. So i was thinking about replacing the built in 500 GB hdd with some kind of SDD Currently two choices: OCZ Vertex Series 60 GB vs. Intel X25-M G2 MLC 80 GB Price is almost the same. From anandtech Intel performs badly in sequential write, but scores very high numbers in random write and random read (good for visual studio?) and i get more space. What do you think? OCZ Vertex or Intel X25-M G2 ? Purely from Visual Studio 2008 and upcoming 2010 perspective?

  2010 május 20-án jelentettük be, hogy megvettük az adatbázis tuzfal megoldást fejleszto Secerno céget. Azóta viszonylag keveset lehetett hallani errol a termékrol, idehaza egyedül az oszi ITBN konferencián tartott róla eloadást Stuart Sharp szuk fél órában. Ráadásul a felvásárlás óta a terméket sem lehetett megvásárolni, hiszen a merge után folyó fejlesztések még nem voltak készen. Január 11. óta azonban letötlheto az Oracle Database Firewall 5.0 telepítoje az Oracle edelivery oldaláról az Oracle Database Product Pack-en belül Linux x86 platformra. A Database Firewall az adatbázis védelem elso vonalának tekintheto. Valós idoben monitorozza az adatbázis aktivitását a hálózaton. SQL nyelvi elemzojével rendkívül pontosan képes detektálni a külso és belso támadásokat, a jogosultatlanul, támadó szándékkal végrehajtott tranzakciókat. Az SQL nyelvi elemzojének kifinomultsága lehetové teszi a szurés közel 100%-os pontosságát és megbízhatóságát, ami azért rendkívül fontos, mert nem elég minden támadó tranzakciót kiszurni, de fontos hogy a normál üzletmenetnek megfelelo tranzakciók közül egyet se szurjön, hiszen az is komoly üzleti károkat okozhat. Az adatbázis tuzfalról több részletet tudhat meg mindenki, aki regisztrál és ellátogat a január 27-i Oracle Security Summit rendezvényünkre, ahol a tervek szerint ismét Stuart Sharp tart majd eloadást, viszont ezúttal 1 órában sokkal több részletet tud megosztani a magyar ügyfelekkel és partnerekkel. • High CPU from httpd process

  I am currently getting high CPU on a server that is just running a couple of sites with very low traffic. One of the sites is in still development going live soon. However, this site is very very slow...When browsing through its pages I can see that the CPU goes from 30% to 100% for httpd (see top output below). I have tuned httpd & MySQL, Apache Solr, Tomcat for high performance, and I am using APC. Not sure what to do from here or how to find the culprit as I have a bunch of messages on the httpd log and have been chasing dead ends for some time...any help is greatly appreciated. • Can I install Microsoft Visual Web Developer w/o a SQL Server Express installation?

  When I attempt to install Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express, it forces an installation of SQL Server 2008 Express, which is okay. However, it forces it to have the instance name SQLEXPRESS instead being the default instance. I tried installing SQL Server 2008 Express first, but the Web Platform Installer 3.0 still wants to download and install the named instance, which then I have to uninstall. I'm putting together a guide that several others in my group will follow, so I'd like to not have to tell them to "install, then uninstall". So, is there any reasonable way to either (1) install VWD w/o SS, or (2) install VWD but configure SS do use the default instance?

• mappoint 2013 randomly crashes on import

  We are sending routes to Mappoint 2013 from our application using an access database. It seems to happen with Mappoint 2010 and 2011 also. It doesn't happen on all of our clients either and it happens randomly on those who it does happen. • make IIS 7.5 cache static content files over diferent pages

  On a Windows 2008 R2, using DNS and IIS I've established my development test server; i.e. I'll have a web application that I can browse on http://test.dev I've moved all the static content files like images, js files and css files into another application which is visible on http://cdn.test.dev test.dev, uses cdn.test.dev urls like http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js to load js, css and images. When I first load "~/" of test.dev, all files will load with a response code of 200; when I press F5 in Firefox, all files, except the "~/default.aspx", will load with 304 response code; but pressing Ctrl+F5 loads them again with a 200 code; if I browse another url like "~/pages/" in test.dev, all of those static files will reload with a 200 code... Is this normal or I'm doing something wrong? Actually, I'm looking for a behavior like this: I want the client to load http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js, only once. I want the client's browser to use this jquery.js file, from cache, in all other pages of test.dev Is this possible?   During my session “Understanding the MVVM pattern” at MIX10 in Vegas, I showed some components of the MVVM Light toolkit V3, which gave me the occasion to announce the release of version 3. This version has been in alpha stage for a while, and has been tested by many users. it is very stable, and ready for a release. So here we go! What’s new What’s new in MVVM Light Toolkit V3 is the topic of the next post. Cleaning up I would recommend cleaning up older versions before installing V3. I prepared a page explaining how to do that manually. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to create an automatic cleaner/installer, this is very high on my list but with the book and the conferences going on, it will take a little more time. Cleaning up is recommended because I changed the name of some DLLs to avoid some confusion (between the WPF3.5 and WPF4 version, as well as between the SL3 and SL4 versions). More details in the section titled “Compatibility”. Installation Installing MVVM Light toolkit is the manual process of unzipping a few files. The installation page has been updated to reflect the newest information. • Add Properties Back to the Context Menu in Firefox

  Have you noticed that the Properties Command has been removed from the Context Menu in Firefox 3.6? If you have been missing it here is how to get it back. Before With the newest version of Firefox you may have noticed a very useful command missing from the “Context Menu”. Here you can see that when we right clicked on the article link we were unable to “access” the properties for it… Same article and the same problem when trying to “access” the properties for one of the images. After Once you have installed the extension you can once again “access” the properties for those links… And those images… Looking very good… Conclusion If you have been frustrated with the removal of the “Properties Command” from the “Context Menu” in Firefox 3.6, you can now add it back in just a few moments.   I get almost every week some e-mails where my dear readers ask for source code of my ASP.NET MVC and FullCalendar example. I have some great news, guys! I ported my sample application to Visual Studio 2010 and made it available at CodePlex. Feel free to visit the page of MVC Time Planner. NB! Current release of MVC Time Planner is initial one and it is basically conversion sfrom VS2008 example solution to VS2010. Current source code is not any study material but it gives you idea how to make calendars work together. Future releases will introduce many design and architectural improvements. I have planned also some new features. How MVC Time Planner looks? Image on right shows you how time planner looks like. It uses default design elements of ASP.NET MVC applications and jQueryUI. If I find some artist skills from myself I will improve design too, of course. :) Currently only day view of calendar is available, other views are coming in near future (I hope future will be week or two).   I’ve been brushing up on sparse columns and filtered indexes recently and two resources stood out for me as indispensable so I’d thought I’d share them. Those of you studying for Microsoft Certified Master: SQL Server will no doubt have found the Readiness Videos published on TechNet and Kimberley Tripp’s (Blog|Twitter) webcast in this series on Sparse columns provides an excellent resource showing different schema designs and specifically where sparse columns fit in. • Code Bubbles: Disruption comes to the IDE

  If you’re like me, you might see the open source Eclipse IDE as a copy or, more generously, a port of the Microsoft’s Visual Studio for the non-.NET world.  It’s not that Microsoft invented the IDE (I would credit Borland with that), but they really took the idea and ran with it for the first version of Visual Studio .NET in 2002.  The question is whether someone outside of Microsoft could take the modern IDE yet another major step forward in both principle and productivity. I think that has actually happened already, and I think the innovator in question is a second-year Computer Science PhD student at Brown, named Andrew Bragdon.  His project, which he calls Code Bubbles, is an IDE that allows for editing, debugging and exploration of code in “bubbles” which remind me a little bit of the discrete note tiles on OneNote…but they’re much more than that.  Bubbles actually allow for call stack traversal, saved debug sessions, sophisticated breakpoint and value watch behaviors and more.  And because bubbles, unlike windows, are borderless, and focus on code fragments rather than whole files, the de-cluttering effect is unbelievably liberating.  The best way to understand what Code Bubbles does is to watch the screencast video:     Code Bubbles is an IDE for Java development.  Why didn’t Microsoft come up with something like this for .NET devs?  Between the existing features in Visual Studio 2010, its WPF code editor, and the fact that OneNote’s UI bears some affinity to Code Bubbles’, it’s interesting that Microsoft still has not thought outside of its own “box” to get us something like this. Heck, that’s easy for me to say.  But it’s easy for you to say that you’d like something like this in Visual Studio sometime soon.  That’s because the ASP.NET site within UserVoice is taking votes on this very issue.  Just click this link and vote! • Platform Builder: PBWorkspaces CESysgen.bat Not Used?

  One of the things that I like about Windows CE is that I am always learning new things, but in this case it is a bit disturbing. We working with Multi UI (MUI) this week and discovered some problems with Windows CE 5.0 and Chinese language support. These problems don’t exist in CE 6.0. The problem was that in the batch files in Public\CEBASE\oak\misc, specifically weceshellfe.bat, some of the shell components needed are only included if certain LOCALs are selected. English is not one of them, I suppose this is because someone didn’t think that we would ever use them and English – doh. No problem, just work around this in PBWorkspaces\<workspace>\WINCE500\<BPS>\cesysgen.bat. But that didn’t work. After a lot of trial and error, what I determined is that this cesysgen.bat isn’t actually used by Platform Builder any more.  Instead, in that same folder is a <workspace>.bat file that is called by Public\CEBASE\oak\misc\cesysgen.bat. That leads to some new problems though, but solvable, in that what I really wanted to do was add a fix after the batch files in CEBASE run, but <workspace>.bat runs before the other batch files in CEBASE.   I am scheduled to share on NuGet (http://nuget.codeplex.com/) at the Deerfield Beach Coder’s Café on March 1st, 2011. My goal for this talk is to present demos and content covering how to leverage this new neat utility to easily “package” .Net-based binaries or tools and share them with others, who in-turn, can just as easy reference and readily use that same package in their Visual Studio 2010 .Net projects. Scott Hanselman has recently blogged in great detail on creating NuGet packages. For hosting a local NuGet package repository, Jon Galloway has a nice article update with a complete PowerShell script to simplify downloading the default feed packages which can be accessed here.
