    Due to a bug that was fixed in C# 4, the following program prints true. (Try it in LINQPad) void Main() { new Derived(); } class Base { public Base(Func<string> valueMaker) { Console.WriteLine(valueMaker()); } } class Derived : Base { string CheckNull() { return "Am I null? " + (this == null); } public Derived() : base(() => CheckNull()) { } } In VS2008 in Release mode, in throws an InvalidProgramException. (In Debug mode, it works fine) In VS2010 Beta 2, it doesn't compile (I didn't try Beta 1); I learned that the hard way Is there any other way to make this == null in pure C#?

  • Where do you manually insert assertions into an automated coded ui test's code in VS2010?

    I am currently automating smoke tests and I am trying to learn how to manually insert assertions with C# into the UImap.Designer.cs file. I am trying to learn how to do this manually but I have no direction on where to put the assertions and all the literature I am finding only covers how to add assertions with the CodedUI Test Builder tool that is included with VS2010. Can anyone direct me to where I need to insert the assertions?

  • How can I make VS2010 insert using statements in the order dictated by StyleCop rules.

    The related default StyleCop rules are: Place using statements inside namespace. Sort using statements alphabetically. But ... System using come first (still trying to figure out if that means just using System; or using System[.*];). So, my use case: I find a bug and decide that I need to at least add an intelligible Assert to make debugging less painful for the next guy. So I start typing Debug.Assert( and intellisense marks it in Red. I hover mouse over Debug and between using System.Diagnostics; and System.Diagnostics.Debug I choose the former. This inserts using System.Diagnostics; after all other using statements. It would be nice if VS2010 did not assist me in writing code that won't build due to warnings as errors. How can I make VS2010 smarter? Is there some sort of setting, or does this require a full-fledged add-in of some sort?

  • (Windows) How to lock all applications (explorer, task manager etc.) and make only the browser activ

    I'm trying to run only the browser in the system - locking access to everything else. Only the supervisor can resume the normal functioning of the system after giving a password. This kind of activity is usually done by virus. Disabling the registry for Task manager etc. Does anyone know of any source available that does this? I might be able to pull it off in Windows XP. But have anyone tried this in Windows 7 ? The aim is to to emulate the Chrome OS on Windows. Only the browser. Nothing else.

  • windows fails to allocate the amount of free physical memory returned by GlobalMemoryStatusEx

    hello! what i'm trying to do is get the free amount of physical memory allocate it and than manage it ( resizing it or delete it ) depending on what further calls to GlobalMemoryStatusEx return. and the problem : it works on 2 PCs with win 7 x64 one with 2G Ram ( on witch i was able to allocate like 1.3 GB) , the other has one 1GB RAM (max alloc was 630 MB). it fails on the third one with 3GB of ramm. I can't find the problem. !! i tried google!! any solution?

  • How can I switch off exception handling in MSVC?

    Does anybody know how to switch off exception handling option in MSVC? I tried to set the option 'Enable C++ exceptions' to 'NO' and I got warning: warning C4530: C++ exception handler used, but unwind semantics are not enabled. Specify /EHsc I would like to switch off the exception handler, too, but I don't know how. In my application I basically need more speer than stability, therefore I chose switching off the exception handling. I do not have any try/catch blocks, but I do use STL. When I switch the option 'Enable C++ exceptions' to 'NO' is there any way how to get rid of those warnings?

  • Saving results to a file in C++

    I have a problem with this code. What I am looking for in the code is to get the result of "first" and "second" randomly and put the result in a file. It works great if I run it without using the file and I get all the correct results, but when I try to save the result in the file, I get only the first node which contains (first, secnd).   • Why does VS2005 skip execution of lines when debugging managed C++ without optimizations?

    I ran into a rather odd behavior that I don't even know how to start describing. I wrote a piece of managed C++ code that makes calls to native methods. A (very) simplified version of the code would look like this (I know it looks like a full native function, just assume there is managed stuff being done all over the place): int somefunction(ptrHolder x) { // the accessptr method returns a native pointer if (x.accessptr() != nullptr) // I tried this with nullptr, NULL, 0) { try { x->doSomeNativeVeryImportantStuff(); // or whatever, doesn't matter } catch (SomeCustomExceptionClass &) { return 0; } } SomeOtherNativeClass::doStaticMagic(); return 1; } I compiled this code without optimizations using the /clr flag (VS.NET 2005, SP2) and when running it in the debugger I get to the if statement, since the pointer is actually null, I don't enter the if, but surprisingly, the cursor jumps directly to the return 1 statement, ignoring the doStaticMagic() method completely!!! When looking at the assembly code, I see that it really jumps directly to that line. If I force the debugger to enter the if block, I also jump to the return 1 statement after I press F10. Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks, Ariel

I'm asking this for a reason that I'm starting to use Boost libraries and I have to specify all those paths every time I'm creating project which is bit tedious.

  • VS2005 and VSS. Should .exes, .dlls, pdbs, .resource and generated .xml files go in VSS?

    It seems like the following type of files need to be writable to be able to compile a solution. .exe .dll .pdb (if debugging) .resource (?) .xml (at least the system generated ones. I'm not sure if they are just all XML documentationf iles) If they were checked in and could only be overwritten by the compiler by the person who had them checked out, then checking them into sourcesafe and requiring a checkout to modify them, which is attemtped by the compiler each time you run, would interfer with other developer's ability to debug and run. What is the best practice? It seems like VSS automatically adds everything.

  • DrawString only works in top-left part of form vb.net

My problem is that it will ONLY draw the string in the upper-left portion of the form, roughly 260x260 starting at 0,0. It literally cuts off the text if it goes beyond. Why is this? Shouldn't it work for the entire form?

  • NUnit - Multiple properties of the same name? Linking to requirements

    I'm linking all our our System Tests to test cases and to our Requirements. Every requirement has an ID. Every Test Case / System Tests tests a variety of requirements. Every module of code links to multiple requirements. I'm trying to find the best way to link every system test to its driving requirements. I was hoping to do something like: [NUnit.Framework.Property("Release", "6.0.0")] [NUnit.Framework.Property("Requirement", "FR50082")] [NUnit.Framework.Property("Requirement", "FR50084")] [NUnit.Framework.Property("Requirement", "FR50085")] [TestCase(....)] public void TestSomething(string a, string b...) However, that will break because Property is a Key-Value pair. The system will not allow me to have multiple Properties with the same key. The reason I'm wanting this is to be able to test specific requirements in our system if a module changes that touches these requirements. Rather than run over 1,000 system tests on every build, this would allow us to target what to test based on changes done to our code. Some system tests run upwards of 5 minutes (Enterprise healthcare system), so "Just run all of them" isn't a viable solution. We do that, but only before promoting through our environments. Thoughts?

  • In forms application, is there any Alternative to MsgBox?

    I like how MsgBox stops all further processing until it's clicked but I don't like how it pops that little msgbox in the middle of the screen, which I then have bring to the front if there is a window covering it. Is there a way to do something like a msgbox but keep it on my Form (which is always in view) so I can go ahead and click a button on the form instead of having to bring the little msgbox window on top of windows that may be covering it. I use the msgbox to inform me that a certain situation has happened, which I manually fix and when I'm done I click the MsgBox to continue processing. It'd be nice to have this button right on the form.

    I have a table in a fieldset that is not displayed properly (overflow) because of a long file name that I cannot wrap.     Hi there, I'm back to C/C++ after some break. I've a following problem: I've a solution where I've several projects (compilable and linkable). Now I need to add another project to this solution which depends on some sources from other projects. My new project compiles without any problems (I've added "existing sources" to my project). the error: 1>Linking... 1>LicenceManager.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "int __cdecl saveLic(char *,struct Auth *)" (?saveLic@@YAHPADPAUAuth@@@Z) referenced in function "public: void __thiscall LicenceManager::generateLicence(int,char *)" (?generateLicence@LicenceManager@@QAEXHPAD@Z) 1>LicenceManager.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "void __cdecl getSysInfo(struct Auth *)" (?getSysInfo@@YAXPAUAuth@@@Z) referenced in function "public: void __thiscall LicenceManager::generateLicence(int,char *)" (?generateLicence@LicenceManager@@QAEXHPAD@Z) Functions saveLic, and getSysInfo are defined in files which I've added to my new project from existing ones. There is object file created during compilation with those functions in target dir, but my LicenceManager class doesn't want to link. I use some extern "C" , and #pragma pack somewhere, but no more fancy stuff. I think every directory, lib and other necessary dependencies are visible in settings for this project. I don't want to have to create separate classes / modules for step1, step2, etc. Is there a way that I can accomplish namespace functionality from inside a class?
