  The search bar in Windows 7 is very convenient to quickly start applications by pressing the Win-key and then entering the name of the application. For applications with a Program Menu entry like Firefox, it is sufficient to type Fire and Firefox will be displayed in the Programs section of the search results. For other applications like regedit.exe, I have to type the full command regedit before the correct choice regedit.exe appears. Is there any way to have regedit.exe appear already when I have just entered a substring? Please note: I have seen Add my applications to Vista’s Start Search, but I don't want to add anything to the Start Menu manually. This question is about if there is some configuration that can be tuned to make the results appear. I have also seen Search behavior of Windows 7 start menu, but my problem is not that the exe appears under Files, regedit.exe correctly appears under Programs, but it should appear already for a substring match.

  I removed accounts that were hosted on a separate drive before upgrading to windows 8 from 7 yesterday. However, now I get the User profile service service failed the login. User Profile can not be loaded. error whenever I try to access any new account. I've attempted it: from safe mode (suggestions here ) net user test \ADD Editing the permissions on the %sysdrive%\Users\Default folder to ensure it is readable Every attempt is met with the same error. Additionally, I do not see any new entries created in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList registry entry. I'm not sure I understand why a failed user creation wouldn't trigger an error... but that seems to be what is happening here.

• How to install Windows on a laptop with no CDROM drive?

  I have an old Thinkpad X60 that I'd like to wipe clean and rebuild. Seeing as this machine doesn't have an optical drive, what's the easiest way of installing Windows XP? I have an external USB hard drive available. Would it be possible to run the install from that instead? Otherwise, what options do I have? Edit: assuming we're using a USB mass storage device... Is there a BIOS setting that I would need to change, or will it configure itself automatically? Would the USB drive need to be configured in any special manner, or would simply having a copy of the Windows CD files in a directory there be sufficient? Since the first couple answers that came in were basically "yes", I guess I didn't phrase my question correctly. I'm asking for detailed instructions on how to do this, not just a sanity check that I'm headed in the right direction. Thanks!

  I want to use RAID 1 on my workstation configuration at work, and I've been looking at using the build in mirror functionality in Windows 7. When you click on the add mirror option it presents you with the following warning. I've done some Google searching and the consensus seems to be that you cannot boot from a dynamic volume, but some forum posts seem to indicate that people have tried this with success (e.g. here). With Google searches producing contradictory information I thought I'd ask you guys for an authoritative answer. Can I use the inbuilt Windows 7 mirroring for my boot partition? Or as I suspect, will it make it unbootable due to it being converted to a dynamic disk?

  I need to find the flavor of Windows that is running using a batch file that will run on anything from Windows NT to Windows 7. I'm using a method based on this page with some minor changes. Systeminfo gives the flavor of Windows that is running. Is there any authoritative list of names that can be returned? If so where would I find the list? • WUBI restore using Windows system repair disc?

  Can I use a Windows 7 system restore disc and system image disc (of Windows drive C) to restore WUBI if my computer crashes? I use Deja Dup for backups, and have a CD of the WUBI .iso installation file? I don't want to run Ubuntu in a separate partition because I find it convenient to run Ubuntu as a WUBI because I can use Windows drivers etc. Thanks for any advice.   Specifically, I want Korean (link), but I hope this helps other people in general. According to this page, it is only possible for Ultimate and Enterprise. Specifically, I'd like to enable my keyboard to type in Korean, and I specified Korean as the input language (Start - type "Input Languages", only result). Under the General tab, I selected Add, and specified Korean.. but it doesn't work, because the language pack isn't installed I presume. Would anyone know how to add different language input / packs to Windows 7 Home Premium? Also, I tried following this tutorial on adding a language pack to HP, but the .cab keeps disappearing so it will not work. Note: Unlike the link in the tutorial as well, I do not have an option to change the display language of Windows, only the option to change input methods.

• What happened to QuickTime Pro for Windows editing features?

  I used to record screencasts in SnagIt and then edit them in QuickTime Pro on windows with no problem. I haven't done it in a few months and now when I try most of the editing features have gone whack-a-doodle. For instance, if I got to delete a few seconds of video, it actually ends up deleting 20 seconds of video. I have repeated this on various source files including the Sample.mov that comes with QT. Using Edit-Cut looks like it works, but it doesn't actually do anything. Trim still works but that appears to be it. I know at least one other person has confirmed this behaviour. Does anyone have any work arounds. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. QT Info QT Pro 7.7.1 (1680.42) QuickTime Version 7.6.8 (1675)

• Do you leave Windows Automatic Updates enabled on your production IIS server?

  If you were running a 24/7 website on Windows Server 2003 (IIS6). Would you leave the Windows automatic update feature enabled or would you turn it off? When enabled, you always get the latest security patches and bug fixes automatically as soon as they're available, which is the most secure choice. However, the machine will sometimes get automatically rebooted to apply the updates leading to a couple of minutes of downtime in the middle of the night. Also, I've seen rare occasions where the machine does not restart correctly resulting in further downtime. If auto updates are off, when do you apply the patches? I guess you have to use a load balancer with multiple web servers and rotate them out of the production site, apply patches manually, and put them back in. This can be logistically inconvenient when the load balancer is managed by a hosting company. You will also have machines in production that don't always have the latest security patches and you have to routinely spend time deciding which patches to apply and when.

  I'm trying to set up a machine here with UltraVNC on Windows Vista with UAC off. The problem is, in this configuration, I can't send Ctrl + Alt + Del (CAD) to the Windows Vista machine, and so I'm stuck at the login screen, which is waiting for the CAD sequence. I'm joined to a domain, so I don't think I can disable the CAD requirement. I can't re-enable UAC either. I also tried using the on-screen keyboard, but it didn't seem to work. Is there a workaround or a solution?

  I have Live Mesh beta installed on 64 bit Windows 7 but cannot connect to the computer remotely. The "Manage devices" page gives this information: This device is synchronizing but cannot be remotely accessed. Check the Live Mesh notifier on the device to see if Live Mesh remote desktop enhancements need to be installed. However, I cannot find instructions on how to use the "notifier" to "see" if Live Mesh remote desktop enhancements are installed or how I could install them. When I originally installed (both times) Mesh I did tell it to install "remote desktop enhancements". Does this just not work with Windows 7 and/or 64 bit?

  Hello, I have a server with two identical disks and I have installed Windows Server 2008 R2 on C, which is a 60GB volume on Disk 0. Using the disk manager, I have attempted to create both a Mirror and Stripe volume in Disk 1 but every time I get the same error "No extents found in the plex". This error occurs after Windows has converted both disks to Dynamic. The fact that the manager allows me to attempt to do this would point to the fact that this is possible. However I have been unable to find any solutions to this error. Any ideas on how to solve this? Thanks Georgios

  Yesterday I did a presentation about Windows CE at the University of Padua Even if the picture seems to suggest that I just showed and empty slide, I illustrated the new features of the OS and did a quick demo of Silverlight for Windows Embedded on Windows Embedded Compact 7 (I’ve to get used to this new name), showing the new tools that provide a better integration between Expression Blend and Visual Studio for the development of Silverlight applications (I hope to be able to write more on this topic soon!). The Operating System was running on some real hardware (TI OMAP3530 evaluation board) and many people had a chance to interact with the new customizable shell. Most of the 60 people attending were still awake at the end of the one hour and a half session, and some of them even asked questions! I would like to thank all the people attending and all the people of Arrow, Fortech Embedded Labs and the University of Padua that made this event possible and provide me the tool and the time to do this presentation.   I have two machines A and C mutually connected to NICs on a third machine, B, as follows: A-B-C B is a Windows 7 machine configured with a bridge containing the A-B and B-C NICs, so that A and C can communicate. So far, so good. I need frames from A destined for B to also arrive at C. Essentially, I would like Windows to behave like a hub rather than a switch. Is there any way to do this?   I use a USB key which is encrypted with BitLocker to store various data. I keep that key with me all the time. What happens all the time is that I send my home computer to hibernate without ejecting the USB key first. Then I unplug the key and take it with me to work. When I get home, I resume my Windows session and even though the key is not plugged in, the drive still appears as mounted on the system. I can also unmount the non-existing device with mountvol, but that only removes the drive letter. Windows will still think the device is plugged in. When I plug the key in, nothing happens. The device's class ID is listed in mountvol output, but the device is not listed in the Disk Management panel.

  It seems that Samba doesn't like at all. I've followed various tutorials and I can't get Windows 8 to work properly with a Ubuntu Server as domain controller. This week i've downloaded ubuntu 14.04 lts and set a fast domain configuration. As usual all other Windows version (XP and 7) work but the newest M$ nightmare doesn't. In this try it doesn't even join the domain, keeps saying the my username or password are wrong.
