    Related: Is there an alternative to iTunes? (for Windows or Mac) thats free? I'm looking for a free, lightweight iTunes replacement for my Windows XP Netbook. iTunes itself is slow and bloated. The software should be able to read the iTunes library, espeacially the ratings of the songs and the intelligent playlists. I don't need the sync to an iPod because I don't own one, I used iTunes only as a jukebox. I also don't need the store, the podcasts and all the other things iTunes provides. Does someone know a good alternative?

    I'm slowing and surely getting used to Windows 8.  It is no doubt a slow process since I still run daily on an XP machine, a Vista machine, and 3 windows 7 box. A new quirk I found regarding Windows 8.  I never thought it was important to learn how to close a "formerly known as Metro" app (what do we call those these days?).  Then I attached a portable drive to my laptop and opened up a PDF file, and I couldn't safely remove the hard drive afterwards because I did not know how to close the PDF reader app. I have since learned that if you want to close an app, you can try Alt + F4 mouse over the top left corner and swipe down, right-click to close you app Windows Key + TAB, right-click to close the app All these make me wonder, how do you do this in a phone or tablet?

While running the System Restore from the DVD, it showed there are no restore points. It shocked me. I created few restore points, where they disappeared. Is there a way to preserve these restore points from accidental deletion? Is there any other FREE tool to take snapshot of the image on other disk?

    Here's my problem: I've made a shortcut on my Desktop (Windows XP (sigh)) like this: C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /k "mysql -u root drupal-defaultadm < ^"C:\Documents and Settings\AAA\Mes documents\Downloads\01.drupal-defaultadm.sql^" && exit" When I double click on it, the DOS prompt is opened, but I get this error: File not found. C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.5.24\bin> So I'm trying to do the command "by hand" and only removing the ^: C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.5.24\bin>mysql -u root drupal-defaultadm < "C:\Documents and Settings\AAA\Mes documents\Downloads\01.drupal-defaultadm.sql" C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.5.24\bin> And gives no error. I'm pretty sure this has to do with the whitespaces enclosed with ". How shall I do to make it work?

    Not sure if this is bad style, but I'm asking this question here because I couldn't find the answer elsewhere, and then I worked out one solution on my own. I'd be interested to see other people's solutions, but after a few days I'll post my own. In my specific case, I'm running on Windows 7, but I'd be interested in answers for other/older versions of Windows. I realise that one answer is "install a version of Unix find, and then solve as for Unix", but I wanted a more "native" solution. EDIT 2012-07-17: Clarification: by "automatically" I ideally mean something I can run as part of a script, rather than a GUI tool which does all the work at the press of a button, because I'll want to do this unattended.

  • Problem with Using chntpw in Ubuntu to reset Windows 7 Password

    I tried resetting the password of windows 7 Using 'chntpw' command in Ubuntu . It showed success . But when I try to login from Windows it does not seem to be changed. I first used live USB of ubuntu 11.10 and did ''Try Ubuntu''. Then I did sudo apt-get install chntpw and then cd /media/Vista/Windows/System32/config sudo chntpw -u username sam . I did according to this link . http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntucat/resetwindowspasswordold/ and got success like this. Hives that have changed: Name 0 Write hive files? (y/n) [n] : y 0 – OK . But when I try to login to windows with blank password , I could not login. I also tried changing the password and showed success but I could not login with that password . Thank you . Any help is very much appreciated.

  • How small can/should I make my partitions?

    My machine is currently split into 3 user partitions (plus however many Windows and Linux have decided to slyly create) Which are C: Windows 7, D: Data, and E(?): Ubuntu. I'm considering wiping my Windows 7 Install (stupid Skyrim not installing) and restructuring the way my machine operates. I want the partitions for the Windows and Linux install to be as small as possible while still able to function well, and be able to install games on my Windows C: drive. I then want to link from both Win7 and Linux drives to the middle D drive so that the in built My Documents (and etc on windows) folder and my Home folder (linux) share a common location, rather than my current situation which is 3 separate file locations. Something like this: I have 1 TB to play with and I want to know the 'best' sizes to make these partitions when I reinstall Windows (which I need to do anyway) and re-jig everything.

  • How to find hidden/cloak files in Windows 2003?

    Here is the point. I set Windows to display all the hidden files and protected operating system files but even after that, my antivirus (Kaspersky) is still getting a ".dll" file on "c:\windows\system32" saying it's a riskware 'Hidden.Object'. I tried to find this file everytime but it's not there. So I asked one of the developers to create a service that verifies the folder each 5 seconds and, if it founds the file, copies to another place. After a lot of research I just found out that every file with this same name on this specific server gets cloak, doesn't matter the file extension. How can I found this kind of file? How can I "uncloak" it? How can I know what this file is doing?

  • PS/2 mouse works with Windows 7 32-bit but not recognised by 64-bit, What to do?

    Our USB mouse was stolen and a PS/2 OK_520 Mouse that works OK on my Medion PC, running Windows 7 32-bit, if plugged in before booting, is not recognised by Windows 7 64-bit on a Dell INSPIRONone_19T with a 19" Touch Screen. (It is a communal computer available to all residents.) A USB mouse works OK and the Update Driver option reports: 'driver is up to date'. Without the USB Mouse, Device Manager/Mice shows only the Touch Screen as a Mouse. The Add New Hardware option searches but shows nothing and the Troubleshooter says ' device possibly not recognised, alterations made to system, try again.' but it is still not recognised after repeated re-boots. The BIOS does not seem to have any option to enable a PS/2 Mouse. The Mouse is very old so maybe it is not 64-bit compatible, or there is no 64-bit driver for one, but how to get one if the device is not recognised?

  • Add a right click context menu in certain WIndows folders that will open a web browser URL?

    In a Windows Explorer window where you browse files in Windows 7, I would like to add a new context menu that will allow me to open a file on my local Dev Server. So it would have to open a browser like Google Crome and the URL would have to be the file path but slightly different removing part of it and prepending my localhost URL. For example if the file I am right clicking on, the path for that file might be... E:\Server\htdocs\labs\php\testProject\test.php I would need a button to click in the context menu Open in Browser and it would open my Web Browser with a URL like this... http://localhost/labs/php/testProject/test.php I would love to be able to do this, any ideas or help would greatly be appreciated! To go one step further, would to be able to somehow make the context menu item only show up on File that are under this folder.... ``E:\Server\htdocs` but this is far less important.

  • Can Windows 7 place a task bar on each monitor, which only shows applications running on that screen

    I would like to have a task bar on each of my monitors, but I only want applications that are currently on that monitor to be displayed on its taskbar. This can be accomplished using UltraMon, however the taskbar shown on the secondary and tertiary monitors is not the native Windows 7 taskbar, but rather made to try to simulate how it looks and feels. As good as it is, it is missing a ton of the features I find best about the taskbar, such as program grouping, "peeking" at applications and so forth. So I am wondering if there is a way to make Windows 7 actually display its native awesome taskbar on multiple monitors.

  • Adventures in Windows 8: Solving activation errors

    Note: I tagged this article with “MVVM” because I got a few support requests for MVVM Light regarding this exact issue. In fact it is a Windows 8 issue and has nothing to do with MVVM Light per se… Sometimes when you work on a Windows 8 app, you will get a very annoying issue when starting the app. In that case, the app doesn’t not even start past the Splash screen. Putting a breakpoint in App.xaml.cs doesn’t help because the app doesn’t even reach that point! So what exactly is happening? Well when a Windows 8 app starts, the system is performing a few check first. One of the checks, for instance, is to see if an app with the same package ID is already available. The package ID is a unique value set in the package manifest. In the Solution Explorer, double click on Package.appxmanifest. This opens the manifest in a special editor Click on the Packaging tab See the GUID under Package Name. This is the unique ID I am talking about. If there is a conflict (i.e. if an app is already installed with the exact same ID), Windows will warm the user that the app is already installed. However when you are in the process of developing an app, you install and uninstall the same app many many times (every time that you start in Visual Studio), and sometimes some issues arise, for instance failing to uninstall the app before starting the new instance of the same app. First step if you get such an error When the application fails to start past the splash screen, the first step is to identify what kind of error happened. In my experience the “already installed” is by far the most frequent (in fact I never had another such error), but it can be something else. An annoying thing is that the popup that shows the error is usually started below the Windows 8 app, and so you don’t even see it! This is especially true if you run this in the Simulator. In that case, do the following: Press on the Simulator’s home button, then press on the Desktop tile on the Start menu. The error popup should be shown on the desktop. If your applications runs on the Local machine, you also do the same and press the Windows button, and then from the Start menu press the Desktop tile. Deployment error in Studio Sometimes the same error causes Visual Studio to fail launching the application at all with a deployment error. This is a better case, because at least it is clear that there is an issue. In that case, write down the code that is shown in the Error window (for instance 0x80073D05 in the example below). Once you have the error code, go to the “Troubleshooting packaging, deployment, and query of Windows Store apps” page and look up the code in question. In my case, the error was “ERROR_DELETING_EXISTING_APPLICATIONDATA_STORE_FAILED”, “An error occurred while deleting the package's previously existing application data.” Solving the “ERROR_DELETING_EXISTING_APPLICATIONDATA_STORE_FAILED” issue Update: Before trying the below, you can also try the simple steps: Exit Visual Studio Go to the Start menu Locate your app’s tile. It should be visible in the Start menu directly, towards the far end on the right. Right click the tile and select Uninstall from the App Bar. Restart Visual Studio and try again. Sometimes it helps. If it doesn’t, then try the following: In order to solve the case where Windows, for any reason, fails to delete the existing application before starting the new instance, follow the steps: Open the Package.appxmanifest in Visual Studio Open the Packaging tab. Change the Package name. For tests you can just try to change the last character of the GUID, though I would recommend creating a brand new GUID. Press Start Type GUID Start the GUID Generator application Select Registry Format Press Copy. Paste the new GUID in place of the Package Name in Visual Studio Important: don’t forget to remove the curly brackets at the beginning and at the end of the newly pasted GUID.   • How do I remote desktop to my work's Windows box from my Mac at home through VPN?

    I would like to remote desktop from my Macbook to my Work's laptop from home. I connect to the work's network via Cisco VPN. My Cisco VPN clients connects fine in Mac OS X but I am unable to remote desktop. I am also unable to ping my work laptop. The laptop is powered on and not sleeping. I can access it via LogMeIn. If I were to actually pug into our network at the building. I can remote desktop to my work laptop from my Macbook. If I use a Windows virtual machine and connect using the Windows Cisco VPN client, I am able to RDP and ping my work laptop. What is wrong with my OS X VPN connection?

  • Windows 7 – Fun with VHD

    I’m teaching about TFS 2008 next week and I wanted to use TFS in a virtualized environment so I downloaded the TFS + Team Suite VPC image from Microsoft’s Website.  Working with Windows 7, I opened the VM with the built-in Windows Virtual PC.  The VM loads fine but the problems started when I tried to install the VM additions: I simply couldn’t get them to install properly. I then looked at VMware and found that they have a product called VMware Player that can load Virtual PC VMs.  Tried that but VMware Player failed in converting the VHD. I then looked at VirtualBox.  Created a new VM, attached the VHD and bingo!  Worked like a charm.  The only real caveat is that the guest Windows will ask for the OS CDs to install new drivers so you must have either the CD/DVD or the ISO file (sweet!) to proceed. OK, I got it working in VirtualBox but I’m curious why I couldn’t install the additions from Windows 7 Virtual PC onto a Windows Server 2003 VM.  Anyone has a clue? BTW, thanks to Rolly Perreaux who pointed my to his blog where he goes into great details explaining how to use VM images with VirtualBox.  Good stuff! var addthis_pub="guybarrette";
