  • How can I read/write data from a file?

    I'm writing a simple chrome extension. I need to create the ability to add sites URLs to a list, or read from the list. I use the list to open the sites in the new tabs. I'm looking for a way to have a data file I can write to, and read from. I was thinking on XML. I read there is a problem changing the content of files with Javascript. Is XML the right choice for this kinda thing? I should add that there is no web server, and the app will run locally, so maybe the problem websites are having are not same as this. Before I wrote this question, I tried one thing, and started to feel insecure because it didn't work.     Im writing a program that should read input via stdin, so I have the following contruct. FILE *fp=stdin; But this just hangs if the user hasn't piped anything into the program, how can I check if the user is actually piping data into my program like gunzip -c file.gz |./a.out #should work ./a.out #should exit program with nice msg. thanks

It could be "gamma delta" or something else. So I would like to skip all the lines that contain "alpha beta".

    Ok, I asked a question earlier about Flex and ADO.NET Data Services but didn't get much response so I thought I'd rephrase. Does anyone have any experience building Adobe Flex applications with a .NET back-end? If so, what architecture did you use and what third-party tools if any did you employ. I've read a little about doing Flex remoting with WebORB but it seems more complicated than it should be, are web services an adequate alternative?

    Say my program attempts a read of a byte in a file on a ZFS filesystem. ZFS can locate a copy of the necessary block, but cannot locate any copy with a valid checksum (they're all corrupted, or the only disks present have corrupted copies). What does my program see, in terms of the return value from the read, and the byte it tried to read? And is there a way to influence the behavior (under Solaris, or any other ZFS-implementing OS), that is, force failure, or force success, with potentially corrupt data?

I'd like to calculate averages and sums of the stored values for this activerecord model on a daily basis. All records are stored in UTC. What's the correct way to sum and average values for, e.g., the previous day from midnight to midnight EST? I can do this in sql but don't know the "rails way" to make this calculation.

    I'm looking for a quick way to log some data - I seem to remember a way to write to the access log, similar to System.Out.Println() but I can't seem to remember how to do it. I can't attach a debugger, nor can I add additional information to the web app via Response.Write(). Is there a simple way - a single statement with no configuration changes would be ideal - to write to either the error or access logs?

I could solve it by using code page UTF - 16 Encoding of Unicode Platform Endian, earlier i was using different code page UTF-8.
